Question is, why can't they break out of the egg themselves? Why are they being forced out?
@rowinso
@rowinso 11 месяцев назад
Nah but why would you keep that in the video 😫😫
@Spidrid
@Spidrid 11 месяцев назад
@@JoeyBlogs007 Sometimes the egg is a little too hard, so they pip but cant get the rest out. He doesn’t ‘force’ them out. He helps crack the egg a bit more, and you can see in the video where one is still attached to the membrane so he stops cracking the egg. He never pulls a bird out of the egg.
@Nemrai
@Nemrai 11 месяцев назад
That warning should be in the video itself though. Since one might not scroll down to see this before watching.
@analog56x
@analog56x 11 месяцев назад
@@JoeyBlogs007 they arent being forced out. sometimes the eggs are a bit too thick, and the chick runs out of energy before it can escape the egg. also, if the humidity is too low, it can cause the membrane to shrink and constrict the chick. you want them to do MOST of the work themselves, as that's how they get strong. if you were to do all the work for them, they probably wouldnt make it. i dont know if you paid attention, but when Morgan noticed the chick still attached to the egg, he stopped assisting. if he were to have forced that one out, it would have died. you cannot tear the egg off the chick before its ready because it still has blood vessels attached to the membrane that is attached to the egg, and they will bleed out. Morgan did what the best thing for them, which is to assist in weakening the egg, in the cases that they are too weak to do it themselves.

Morgan I don’t know if it will help but a channel called A Chick Called Albert has many examples of how to best help chicks hatch. He's a very gentle individual and I learn a lot from him.

For those intrested in statistics: 2 times 12 = 24 eggs were incubated. 13 + 3= 16 live goslings. 16/24=2/3 That gives success rate of 67%. Better than previous 40-50%.
@qynoi42

Was it last year or the year before when he had a horrible hatch rate with a new incubator - barely over 50% if I recall - so it's good to see 3 extra goslings this year.
@yvonnetruelove2270
@yvonnetruelove2270 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for the statistics! Now for a statistic joke: According to statistics, 80% of all fatal plane crashes happen in the first 3 or last 8 minutes of the flight. But according to even more precise statistics, 100% of all fatal plane crashes happen within the last 0.1 seconds of the fight.

we had 3 out of the 4 chicks that we hatched so far this year get stuck in the egg. we think the humidity was a bit too low, so we just kept moistening the membrane so it wouldnt shrink wrap the chicks. had to assist all 4 in hatching though, and 3 out of 4 made it and are doing very well. we have a mouse problem where we are, and the mice like to pick the chicks off at the watering station when they are tiny, so this year i built a broody box that is completely mouse proof. we stick the mom and the chicks in the box with water and feed until they are about 2 weeks old, and we have a 100% survival rate with it so far. i used a plywood topped pallet (cut in half), screwed 2x2's to each corner for the walls, wrapped the floor and sides in 1/4" hardware cloth, and have a snug fitting top on it. a little bit of wood shavings, and you're ready to grow up some chicks! i gotta build probably 2 more of them now though, as we have 4 more broody chickens and we gave the 2 most consistent ones a bunch of eggs each haha! we also had 2 of our ducks go broody a few weeks ago, and -should- be getting ducklings within the next week. super excited haha!

I look forward to the goslings hatching video every year and every year you get more and more confident with the assisted hatching. Being such a great lover of our feathered friends I am sure you have watched A Chick Called Albert, this man helps so many different breeds of birds from the tiniest to quite large birds and unlike most bird specialists he thinks assisted hatching is the way forward, when the egg is under the mother bird her lying and moving around on the eggs assists any of her babies who may need a bit of help, his chosen tool with assisted hatching is a pair of tweezers as it gives him much more control in helping the baby hatch. However saying all of this I think you did a fantastic job at knowing exactly when to stop - and yes I do remember you and Alison trying so hard to save that first assisted hatch and my heart broke for you both when it all went wrong, I do not see it as a failure though because although it didn't work for you that time you learnt from it and look at you now - great job - great video - thank you Morgan for sharing the newest members of Gold Shaw Farm. Love to you Alison and all the animals on the farm with special hugs for Toby - please tell him he is still my number guardian life stock dog ❤xxxx

I’m not sure how much work you’re willing to put into the abides that have trouble hatching on their own.. but I’ve had amazing success with peeling the shell with my fingers before placing the baby in an “ICU” unit (for us that is a box of some sort with a towel and heat lamp. Ones that are still attaches to them membrane we only take the top half of the shell away from where it is still connected. We keep an eye on them and put hen healer on any wounds. For example one of ours had an injury to its head and another had skin that didn’t close on the abdomen fully, that baby also had some flesh protruding from the abdomen so I applied sugar to help it shrink down. All of our assisted hatch babies have been doing wonderfully with this routine :)

'Those mother geese can be quite protective...' I am still surprised every time I see a goose how small they are, because it will be forever ingrained in my memory that time I was chased by a goose that was taller than I was. In her defense, I was chasing her goslings. In my defense, I was five years old and they were f*king adorable.

Does the pipping cause the other chicks to start hatching? I am wondering if that's why the last three you assisted look so runty. There weren't as developed (a couple days later) but the pipping surrounding them caused them to start hatching anyway. Of course, they all started incubation at the same time and my knowledge of bird incubation is based almost entirely on watching videos by a guy homesteading in vermont and making videos about it 8)

Great job Morgan on the assisted hatching!! When I lived in the country side by the peach & pecan orchards (I live south) I raised an entire little duck farm and had about 50 ducks + some geese at one time. I had a blast hatching them. My hatching success rates were high, and I did assist a few each time, in my assisted hatching, normally only 1 in every 10 ducklings didn't make it, which proves this is worth practicing. And all the ducks grew to be healthy and able. There is so shame in helping a domestic animal, that's their propose if for us to intervene. So I got pretty good at it. Just break the shell on the fat side (where the head should be.) help the head come out, and leave them in the incubator to absorb the yolk and maintain the moisture in the incubator to soften the shell and membrane. Then they manage to kick out of the shell when they gained the energy from their yolk. -If their belly is ever bleeding from their cord ripping from the yolk, pack the bleeding with corn starch until it stops bleeding. Then leave them in the incubator and reduce the humidity to help scab over the cord. You can put a dry towel under them to help keep them dry too. You can save an extra life this way, and I saved every bleeder! -Hope this helps. Good luck on the rest of your hatching Morgan! I really miss doing this, but now I live in the city. I miss all them quackers and my beautiful buff goose Peach.
