Scott, I have a cabinet that looks very much like your bookcase that was built by a great grandfather, I think. Mine doesn't have glass; it has wooden doors, and the two drawers are at the top. It was called a safe by my mother's family. At one time I think it was painted, but my mother had it refinished; it has different pulls.

Sweet! I'll bet those side panels are more of that old crate! I wonder if there are faint hints on the inside walls? I have a side table my grandpa built to hold my mom's dollhouse. He built it from piano parts. The front curves down from the front door cause he used the key cover😊. They were so thrifty back in the day. Today things get tossed and we have become a nation of consumers instead of producers. A sad state of affairs. Love to see these old pieces saved and cared for. TFS!

Wonderful vid! Oh how I miss those Philadelphia thrift stores (and fleas), which I haunted back in the 80s and 90s when I lived there. Here in NYC, such finds at those prices are few and far between. Guess it’s just as well since we New Yorkers are space compromised. But your vids take me back to those lush years: finding neat old things, and for cheap, in West Philly, the Northeast, Kensington and Germantown. So many treasures, so much fun! Thanks, as usual, for the charming vid.

More more more on furniture of the 20's and 30's. I loved each item. I loved that chair, too. I have a walnut table that sits 12 with legs that are like your library table. It has 4-5 leaves and the way the two sides slip apart, massive wooden mechanisms, is genius. I also have a chest of drawers from the same period. Thank you! I’ve been trying to find ANY info on the finish of one of my dressers that’s been in my bedroom for decades. And I was so curious about the bumpy texture wondering what is it, can I clean it? Condition it? It kind of rips up the cloth I wipe it down with so it’s only been dusted since idk what to do. No one really lived in this house since the 80’s, and my great grandfather and grandpa built this house around the 30’s so when I moved in and started cleaning out the desk in my bedroom, I found children’s homework from the 30’s & 40’s with names of great aunts I never got to meet. I’ve been trying to identify and find more info on several furniture pieces in my home since I’m pretty sure nothing has been bought after the late 70’s. I just know this house was built in the 30’s, they were poor, but built this house out of materials they were able to salvage from houses/buildings they’ve demolished. Learned a lot about porcelain door knobs and the lock mechanism being on the outside of the door, so some of the materials are older than others. Mixed materials/hardware, etc. from their modern to their version of outdated and fancy luxury pieces to home made bespoke pieces. It’s quite a mix. So anyway I have no idea if someone made the dresser and desk, if someone found it, bought it? Everything in my home is a constant antique I’m trying to identify it seems haha. Fun, but it drives me nuts when I can’t find answers.

awwww to bad they didn't cut from the bottom of the crate.. what a awesome find, I love little histories to a piece, makes them that much more special.. I don't mind the old shellac, but I have a 1892 gothic revival armoire, I'm restoring, that sat in a cat infested continual damp basement and smells like a bona fide corpse, I had to remove it from my shop to the garage it stunk up the whole place.. I have to restore it, it smells so horribly bad I don't have a choice but to strip and redo the shellac, after a good dose of odor reducing clear primer on its unstained bits. I have tried every other option from spraying with vodka, vinegar, charcoal, baking soda, cedar oil, and sunshine for weeks to no avail.. I don't want to paint it and have spent countless hours sanding details by hand.. but If I cant get the smell out? paint might be my only option..sadly!

I’m guessing that VV 8-30 Victrola was “upgraded” circa 1947 with the tube amp and a Webster Chicago changer back when the original acoustic parts were seen as “outdated junk” this was commonly done during the 1930s-1960s before this stuff was seen as collectible. Even with vintage console radio phonograph combos were upgraded to 3 speed changers when they came out. I have a Magnavox radio from 1946 that had the changer upgraded circa 1950. But at least it still looks like it belongs with the radio. it’s kinda jarring when you find a radio phono console from the 1940s and the original 78 rpm only record changer is replaced is a BSR turntable from the 1970s it looks so out of place!
