I had the darndest problem with skipped stitches until I shortened my stitch length and width. I found that 6.0 width and 1.5 length did not skip. I also found that the walking foot sometimes caused issues so used the zigzag foot. It fed through the machine fine. I have an Elna EF72 machine. Also agree 21/4 inch batting is best, found on Amazon in 50 ft length, just enough for a jelly roll. And I found the Clover Fabric Tube maker is a game changer, it folds the batting and jelly roll twice, once in the middle and then in half and all you need to do is sew. No more wonder clipping! Not to dis Wonder Clips, I love them as well. Thanks for the great tutorial.

So glad I saw this tutorial. I made an oval rug & used the zig zag stitch, and had one heck of a time with skipping stitches ! I was pulling my hair out ! Tried different kinds of needles, different stitch widths, changed the tension. Nothing really worked. Struggled to finish the rug. I did go back and went over all the area that had the skipped stitches on it. I said this is my 1st & last rug ! Now I will try it again, using this other zig zag stitch ! Thank you so very much ! 😊

Thank you for sharing with us, I just made my first rug using all your tips and I used fat quarters and I cut into 2.5 inch strips and love the outcome. I couldn’t find the Bosal batting that many artist use and suggested in any of the local quilt shops or Joann’s in person so I used felt that I had in my supplies and cut the pieces into 1 1/4 in seeing this is my first rug and it worked, as far as a learning process. I made one of these and found that using at least a 30 wt thread (I ended up using an industrial thread that is used for outdoor purposes) and a size 20 needle on my Sailrite LSZ which is a walking foot machine that will sew through bone for clean, even stitches when sewing through bulk like this. I used my Baby Lock Crescendo to piece it and also the sasher tool (Pauline from Australia is the maker of the tool and I can’t remember her last name at the moment but the sasher tool eliminates the need for the clips because you just pull it down the length of your strip as you go). I don’t use my Sailrite very much because I don’t do a lot of sewing that requires such a heavy duty machine so, if you belong to a sewing group you might ask around to see if anyone has one they’d let you use to make your rug. They’re portable but are built like tanks, no frills or fancy stitches and were invented to repair sails and marine vinyl tears on boats. I use mine for outdoor cushion covers, marine vinyl grill cover, and rugs like this. Otherwise she’s idle which makes me think someone might be happy to have you bring your prepared strip and sew it in their studio. Just a thought.

I think these rugs are so cute! I was at a fabric shop over the weekend and they were having a class on how to make these rugs. But they were using a little plastic “thing” to feed the fabric through. I think I would like to make an oval rug, but I am still learning to sew. I guess the farther you get putting the strips together, the easier it gets? Thank you for sharing this process.

One comment to add. Make sure you clean the fluff out of your machine before abd after sewing the tube. My bobbin got hung up and it was due to the amount of fluff in the bobbin case. I was using hand cut batting. Will use bosal next time and hopefully will not have as much fluff. I'm goiing to use Christmas fabric and sew candle mats. Thanks for posting this excellant tutoeial

@ISeeStarsQuilting
@ISeeStarsQuilting 6 месяцев назад
This is a lot to answer in a short comment 🙌 Yes, you want to make your very firs strip shorter because it will help create the shifting of your following strips and help the overall random look of your jelly roll quilt. As for the yardage that you asked about.... there is a lot that factors into that, but I wrote a blog article on it to explain the formula - iseestarsquilting.com/jelly-roll-quilt-size-guide/ Let me know if you have any questions!

Would it not be better to use a Walking foot when stitching this project? Including the Zig-Zag stitch?
@ISeeStarsQuilting
@ISeeStarsQuilting 7 месяцев назад
you definitely could give it a try and see if it works better for you. I found that it made things harder to see what I was doing. I have had people tell me that it was best to go nice and slow through all of the stitching for the best result. 🙌❤

What size needle do I need for the thickness?
@ISeeStarsQuilting
@ISeeStarsQuilting 10 месяцев назад
I would recommend a jean strength needle - either a 90/14 needle for light- and medium-weight denim and a 100/16 for heavyweight denim
@pjd2709
@pjd2709 2 года назад
Skipped stitches are a sign of a new needle, as you may have a burr on the needle you are using, you can tell if a new needle is needed as the sound of stitching will be different! (It sounded to me while you were stitching the length of the strip, that I could hear the burr on the needle).

I appreciate your experienced advice. I have switched my needle since then. Thank you 🥰🥰

Nice video! How big of a rug did it make?
@ISeeStarsQuilting

It came out to be right at about 29" in diameter. 🥰

Should there be some kind of non slip back on it,?
@ISeeStarsQuilting
@ISeeStarsQuilting 2 года назад
I would say that it depends on where your rug is going to be. I've had one in my bathroom for a long time now and there is no non slip on the back.... not no one really goes flying through the bathroom running over it either 😂 It's pretty safe there.

I did the same thing. Ran out of clips. So I sewed, then started clipping again.😅

Hi! I tried to find the scissors on your Amazon, for less than $20? I'm not finding them. Did they go up in price? Thanks. I really enjoy your tutorials!
@ISeeStarsQuilting
@ISeeStarsQuilting Год назад
amzn.to/3B4W3SS These are the scissors - Right now they show $26, but that could be after all the holiday sales? You can add them to your cart and then leave them in there. Amazon will let you know when a price in your cart drops in price and you can snag them when they are at their lowest 😘😘

Can you use a walking foot? Or is that not recommended for this type of work?

A walking foot is a great idea. I see no reason why it wouldn't be a good idea to try! 😘 IF you make one and try it out, let me know please?

You do need two packages of the batting, unless you use the new larger ones

Yes! just the 1 package made a smaller rug but it worked out for this project! Thank you for watching🤩🤩
