TIP: When sewing your jelly roll rug, be sure to iron every 3-4 rows to prevent waving and rippling of the rug.
Jenny demonstrates how to make a beautiful jelly roll rug using 2.5-inch strips of precut fabric (jelly rolls). For the smaller oval rug, she chose a "Kisses" Rolie Polie by Doodlebug Designs for Riley Blake. The larger circle rug was made with Kaffe Classics - Peacock Design Roll by Kaffe Fassett for FreeSpirit Fabrics. This project also requires strips of batting. Jenny used Bosal Katahdin 100% Organic Cotton Precut 2 1/2" Batting.

Those rugs were done by braiding three stripes of fabric together. They were done completely by hand and many of them used left over scraps and good parts of old clothing. I made a small one when I was young and have thought about making one from old jeans for my kitchen. They were comfortable to stand on.

I've been working on one of these since early January. I'm still not finished with it for a couple of reasons. First of all it's the project I work on when I need a break from the regular sewing job I do every year for a friend. I work on his project for about 2 hours at a time, then I need to stand up and walk around and that's when I work on my rug. Also, I do all my sewing up on the 2nd floor our barn which is heated with kerosene heaters. It's been way too cold to even try to get the barn up to a comfortable temperature for me to work. And now I have the cat that showed up in our garage and had at least 5 kittens before I even knew she was there! If I didn't have all the other things going on, I probably could have made 3 rugs! I love them!

Thank you for the tutorial Jenny. Something that can be important for those who don't have a set in machine or perhaps even if you do is to take out from under the needle and iron after 2 or 3 rounds. Set your iron to the highest setting your fabric will take and iron the heck out of it. This will avoid any rolling in that can and did happen to me. If you think you have ironed too much iron a bit more. Because the pattern is protected you should support the pattern designer and purchase, there are specific starting measurements and more tips included. I LOVE mine and will make more. It is mindless and relaxing sewing that is welcomed.

Especially because the pattern is not very clear with the steps on how to fold and start the long strips with the batting. The way I did it worked, but so many of these tutorials are unable to show clear steps because of the pattern copyright, I think. I wish I lived closer to my mother or grandmother so they could show me clear steps for free! They never needed a pattern 🥰

@@vickyls8132 It's a plastic tool a bit like a belt buckle that you slide the strip through. It folds in the two sides and holds them so you fold the strip in half again and hold that part as you stitch it. You slide it down the long, long strip about 6 inches at a time at the machine as sew.

My class made this rug and there were a lot of problems keeping it flat. Lots ended up piling books and magazines so the rug wasn't 'falling' but kept flat. You can even do half a jelly roll and sew it straight (meaning instead of going around just join it in lengths of straight strips) and turn it into a bag!
@ellenhofer3343
@ellenhofer3343 4 года назад
I've seen other videos where they actually tell viewers to get out all their sewing boojs and stack them aroubd their machines. I've tried twice to make ine of these, used the 'steam till cery damp' methid but have not been successful. I'm not wasting my fabrics to try another oval or round one. Instead, I'm making rectangular ones out of strips and putting binding around the rectangles on all sides.

For those who are complaining about what she didn’t show how to do this pattern is proprietary and she can’t show everything or no one would buy the pattern. I have made several and the pattern does have a few things you need to know.

Tip: To make, sewing the Fabric and the Batting together easier on your self get a dry cleaning hang with the cardboard bar slip one end of the bar out slide your roll of Rug batting an your sewn together fabric roll on to the card board roll then put the cardboard end backbone the hanger hook the hander on something. Then you can sew without stop because both the batting and rug fabric rolls will roll as you sew them together. Easy peezy.

@@racheng77 thanks ! how do you keep them flat while stitching it together when it gets huge?
@racheng77
@racheng77 3 года назад
@@ah5721 A large work surface helps. If you're sewing in the right direction, all of your 'work' should end up on the outside, not bunched up under your machine. That should help. Make sure you've pressed/ironed your strips out, too, prior to sewing in the batting, so that they lay as flat and seamless as possible. It's not a beginner's sewing project, because you have to be comfortable enough to kind of free hand sew those strips with the batting inside, without pinning (I do this with bias tape when finishing a quilt because it's honestly easier than trying to pin it). And then again, holding it together with one hand and guiding it under the pressure foot, while sewing the strips together.

People actually used to put batting on their walls and cover it with fabrics for warmth. Warm & natural came about as a drapery lining prior to double & triple pane windiws. I believe you can still get liners you can attach behind drapes, grommet top draoes and gathered top drapes/curtains.

WOW So much easier than by hand. These would be great for in front of the sink, the bath tub or shower, and beside the bed. But ... just for fun ... and while it is good and clean ... drape it over the top bed on a bunk bed, a desk or sturdy table and let the kids use it as a tent. If you have a dog that is house broken and does not like to dig in the dirt ... it would make a great bed for them. (So now you know I love kids and animals.) Oh, be sure to send it out to be cleaned ... to much for home washers. ;)

I love the purple rug so much! Can you wash it in the clothes washer?
@towinbuddy
@towinbuddy 4 года назад
Nanna Liz you would need to take it to a laundromat where the machine are larger. It will not fit in a large home washer

This might be a daft question but what length do you make the first sewn strip before you turn it? Or does it not matter?

It probably has it listed in the pattern, but I would do what I liked.

I'm pretty sure Jenny said to complete the end-to-end sewing of the jelly roll, then lay on the batting. The batting was 25 yards and I think the jelly roll was the same.

No daft question at all Wendy - you're right Jenny said to first complete the jelly roll sewing and lay the batting into the strip and sew and sew and sew....have fun !

I just completed a jelly roll rug. Has anyone put anything on the bottom of their rugs to keep them from sliding around on a tile floor?

I can see one of these made out of one of those cute ME AND MY SISTER dotted or striped jelly rolls. It would be great right in front of the crib on top of wall-to-wall carpet in a baby's room,

Question for you all. I need a long, narrow rug for my camper. Could I do that with a Jelly Roll Rug? It would need to be 4 feet long and only 1 1/2 feet wide.

Hi, Linda! It could be done, if you deliberately elongate it like that. Might require some fiddling to figure out though. Good luck!

This is something I worked out once for a crochet granny rectangle - but the same principle applies broadly for an oval so you might find it a good place to start... "Every round from Round 2 onwards adds just as much length as it does width. So, however much longer you want your finished rectangle to be than it is wide is the length you need added to the width of your starting strip." For my crochet rectangle if I wanted my finished granny rectangle to be 1.5 metres long x 1 metre wide, excluding borders, and my starting strip was 3cm wide then I would make my starting strip 3 + 50 = 53cm long (megan.cc/GrannyRectangle/). That 50cm was the difference between the length of 1.5 metres and the width of 1 metre. The difference for you is 2 1/2 feet and the width of the strip is inconsequential on this scale so that would be the length I'd try. But if, say, my strip was 1 inch wide and I was trying to be as accurate as I could possibly work out I would make it 2 feet and 5 inches long. Now - as to how many strips you need, that is something you'd have to do a bit more maths for. (Compare the area that 1 roll makes and the area of the rug you want. Whatever the difference is will be what you need. Lets say you wanted a rug that was twice the area of the rug that uses 1 roll, then you'd need 2 rolls, twice as much batting, etc.) I hope that was helpful. :-D

That rug is so pretty. I didn’t see how you started the first row as you already had it in the machine. I am a little confused as how to start it. Do you have another tutorial that shows it?

Linda Drew there are lots of jelly roll rug tutorials but the pattern is proprietary so they can’t tell everything. I have made several and took a class at my quilt shop. Basically it’s how you want it shaped but I folded mine about 7” for the first turn.

Has anyone made the round rug yet? I'm having a hard time near the outer edges. Mine is all wavy and steam ironing it did nothing much to settle the waves down. It's like a floppy sun hat!

Try using a walking foot and turning your machine speed down while doing the zig-zag stitch and don't push your fabric through the foot
