In this tutorial, I take you through making log bunkers, a common Japanese defensive position found throughout the pacific theatre and in other theatre's around the whole.
I cover the tricks and tip for creating the earth embankment out of polystyrene along with a few different materials and build techniques for the inter log walls. Finally wrapping up with a few ways of making the scatter and clump foliage work for you.

I think that it looks natural for what would happen if you were in a war with a short time to build a new bunker . What others don't understand is that you can't get a hold of all straight wood to build your bunker .
@Elderos5
@Elderos5 6 лет назад
Hey Mel, if you split your sticks/logs in half, lengthwise with this application, you can double the quantity of your materials, or half the needed quantity, however you want to see it. This would also help it to adhere to the sides as there would be more surface area.

Fabulous techniques! Thank you for this tutorial. The thing that occurred to me insofar as the logs themselves are concerned would be bamboo or palm tree type materials. As such, I think your garden plant material was perfect as is in its natural state. I would not have painted the logs at all. Leave them natural. Perhaps a tiny bit of painted highlights with dry brushing only? An American patrol of Marines a generation apart -- Pacific Theatre island in WWII with the bunker manned by Japanese troops or a scene from the jungles of Vietnam with the bunker providing a safe haven for NVA or VC troops. THANKS AGAIN!
@jordibcn5772

I aggree, I would not have painted the logs (that requires to paint the walls in advance) Maybe a light varnish would be enough for the logs. THanks for sharing your mastering skills Greetings from BCN

I wouldve left the logs alone and not paint them. But rather take a small culinary propane torch and lightly scorch the logs a little bit. Then using your Elmer's PVA glue brush on a coat to seal them like a varnish or even brush on a matte wood varnish to seal them. That way if you get any drywall spackle on it you can easily wipe it off. That way you keep the natural look of the logs, etc. And to add a little extra detail to your log bunker. Think of like the trenches of WWI or other earthen bunkers and such. When it rains, and since the ground inside the bunker is just dirt. If you paint it a light color brown to show the ground is dry is good. But if you paint the dirt a dark brown then I would also dig out a small little puddle and then pour a small amount of EZ Water resin to show that there is still mud and water inside the bunker after a recent rain storm. Since many of those type of bunkers were common to have puddles of water in them giving the real battle conditions soldiers had to endure in combat living in those bunkers. Its amazing what just a little bit of detail can really bring it to life. Use your imagination when your building one of your dioramas. And most importantly have fun with it.

Great tutorial (as usual) only thing I'm wondering about is if anyone has done it with raw wood? As in, instead of painting the 'logs' just maybe putting a wash over them to tie it all together? I'd say you'd have to get as far as painting the whole thing first and then add the logs then wash it and flock it.

well, the rest of the world is using the metric system, but it's easy to remember that one inch is about 2.5 centimeters (2.54), also helps having a direct comparison to the common GW model measurement.
@GB-yt9sn
@GB-yt9sn 4 года назад
The UK is not like Europe we still mix imperial and metric. Easy example, all motorway signs are in miles, but all liquids are in litres. So you'd drive a mile for 30ltrs of petrol.

Will you be making a bunker/buildings set on Star Wars worlds like Endor or other overgrown lands? Some bunkers could be like this one, but more than likely would be metal in design. You have a vid for making Pillboxes, but i dont think these would be correct. If you hurry i could make something for when the new Star Wars Legion game comes out in February. :) :)

Really great job creating this bunker. The logs really are nice & TY for explaining hovv to prepare them as I've made the mistake of not "sterilizing" them & gotten bugs running around. Most of the materials can be gotten through recycleing except for spackle, glue, tape paint & flock/foliage ( except the lichen, ty for the idea but should that be "sterilized" as vvell & using the same technique ? ) so cost is much lovver than a store bought piece. One question, have you used sculpey ( lovv temp oven baked clay that turns to plastic & can be further sculped after baking) in any of your models ? I've found it to be relatively lovv cost & capable of being turned into anything needed including miniature figures ( depending on our sculpting ability ) & I'd ike your opinion of it & vvhat you find are its best uses . TY again for sharing your creativity .

I was wondering, is there anything you might suggest mixing with filler/spackle to get some different effects? I've been experimenting with using Future Polish in any situation where normally you would use water (thinning paints, most obviously), and I was wondering what that might come out looking like if I used it to thin down some filler. Likewise, what are your thoughts on mixing filler/spackle with ink, paint, or grit?

Better grass quality and it’d be much better, it needs to look wild. It looks like fake football field grass when it’s supposed to be old. Old is grown out and wild, not what you have in the build. Just a quick tip :D
