I cry every time I watch this film. Despite all the gore and horror there’s a real tenderness and hopelessness to this film. For me, the heart of the film is him taking her hand in his own when he goes back in to perform the rest of the exorcism alone. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, but it means so much. The part where they’re on the landing taking a break and he says that the devil chose Regan to make them believe that they’re base creatures unworthy of love, I just - wow. It gets me every time. This film is such a beautiful meditation on despair and how it can make people feel so alone. But in reality you’re never alone - it’s infinitely possible to love and be loved in return. Again - him taking her hand. Knowing that one or both of them might not make it, but being willing to try any way. I’ve never felt this was a horror film - just a film about people trying their best to be there for one another.

The ending where Karas takes the demon and kills himself seems to be taken from the Bible story Mark 5:9 where Jesus performs an exorcism by sending the demons into some pigs and sends the pigs into a lake to drown. Blatty called the sequel "Legion" from that because when Jesus asked the demon his name, he tells Jesus, "My name is Legion for we are many".

In my opinion (only mine) it's a matter of how you see the story. I read the book before the film came out. I tend to see it as a love story. A mothers love for her daughter, Karras's love for his mother and Merin, a priest he had just met.. No one left, the the grounds keeper stayed, her personal assistant stayed, even the housekeeper. Karras giving his own life for a girl (and her mother) that he barely knew. Regan kissing the priest at the end, a show of affection for being saved, although it was stated that she had no recollection of the events. As powerful as the evil was the love and willing self-sacrifice was greater. Again.. just an opinion.

@@nightfall902 In its own way maybe also an exploration of losing faith and regaining it. On the one hand, the demon wins, if you consider that it may never have been after the girl, but just after Merrin and Karras. It still loses, though, because in becoming the demon, Damian fully regains his faith at the last second. ... I *did* read the book, but in one night, and under the influence. So it doesn't count. I don't remember a thing. But I do know that the whole thing is really Blatty's story about his own religious thoughts.
@nightfall902

@@ianrastall As with any decent work, different people will focus on different aspects. I totally agree with your take. I see it as him getting back his lost love of God and faith. Even receiving absolution, by the way of last rights from the other priest at the end.

I agree this is a very important scene, added for The Version You've Never Seen in the '90s. I also think the last scene with the detective and the priest is important, as it gives us the impression that good has triumphed over evil, and it was again business as usual. The priest having the same sarcastic remarks as Damien tells us this, and we get a sense of closure. The original kinda just left us hanging imo🤷‍♂

When Father Merrin and Father Karras give their lives to save Regan at the end of this movie it makes me cry everytime. Karras is such a sad and tragic character. The dream he has of his mother is so haunting. This is much much more than a horror movie to me now that im older.

So far, Liala keeps expecting what would happen in modern horror movies. She says she thinks it is going to be a slow build up, but she is so used to every possibility for a scare to actually have a scare ... the crude way modern horror films are made. In older days, movie makers knew their audience was not so impatient and crafted a movie vs just trying to scare people ever chance they could work in.

Example of this would be the original "IT" film, which was a very well made scary movie except for the ending. Compared to the remake which is scary but FULL of constant cgi special effects and jumpscares. The remake actually gets tiresome with its continuous jumpscares in nearly every scene .

They need constant stimulation. I can't believe she's not getting the seriousness of this. But worse, she's not appreciating the art of it. It's so sad too. Now it's near the end and she's still talking jumpscares. And making light of it. Twice she really felt it. Those few moments were worthy of this film. And I really enjoyed her there.

Horror movies have different psychological effects. You have jump scare movies backed by a musical score to build the tension, but with the exorcist, a whole different animal from any other horror movie, in history. It reaches deeper than any other. A fear that has nothing to do with impulsive crappy jump scare movies. Also, watching it in a dark theatre without the spoofs on tv to give todays generation a more conditioning of what to expect loses its effect as well. No younger generations experienced what we did in 1974.

The shock at the end is what is most remembered. However as I’ve aged, the story itself is so mesmerizing and engaging that I now watch it for that reason. Sometimes I don’t even watch the exorcism part. But also at the end, when the Mom and detective come into the room, Reagan is crying for her mother but there is a fraction of a second where her Mom hesitates, with fear on her face, before ultimately going to comfort Reagan. Brilliant acting.

A fascinating bit of The Exorcist lore surrounds the bearded medical technician who gets Regan from the gurney to the table, holds down her head with the blue drape and puts the tape across her chin (11:27). He was an actual technician at New York University Medical Center, named Paul Bateson. He would also go on to become a convicted killer for the murder 4 years later of theater critic Addison Verrill, and the only suspect in a series of murders dubbed "the bag murders" (a.k.a. "the fag in a bag murders"), which involved a series of homosexual victims whose remains were found in trash bags. Director William Friedkin had a doctor friend who worked at NYUMC, and when he asked for a medical procedure that was really visually disturbing, the doctor replied he had just the thing. He invited Friedkin to observe, and the director immediately knew he had his scene. Actual nurses and technicians were cast as extras, including Bateson, who scored a speaking part. And the rest, as they say, is cinematic (and criminal) history....

@Po Oh my goodness, you're right! Thank you for that correction, I'll edit the original post with it! I always thought I'd read it was the mustache/glasses guy who spoke and inserted the needle, but I just went back and reviewed the scene again, after googling Paul Bateson's face. Paul _was_ the other guy, with the beard, who got her moved from the gurney to the table, telling her to move over, then moves her down on the table, then holds her head with the blue drape during the insertion, and puts the tape across her chin. In some ways, that's even creepier, since he not only spoke, but handled her more than the needle guy. It's almost like you can hear Friedkin's direction. "Now Linda, Regan's really afraid in this scene. Try and imagine you're lying there and a serial killer is holding your head down with both hands. Action!" You can't write this stuff....

This is a true story. My mom and my 2 elder sisters used to bring my brother and I to watch The Exorcist when I was only 5 years old in first year of kindergarten. Most of the time I felt a bit bored and bothered my mom for snacks/drink or just to gain her attention. Only 3 scenes made me stop and watch: the opening desert archaeology scene with the red blood movie title; the crucifix masturbation scene; the final exorcism scene. My sisters were annoyed and complained to mom that I don’t know how to watch a movie in a cinema. Almost 2 decades later, I gained respect for this vintage classic as a young adult who is also a movie buff. So when it was playing on tv for its 25th anniversary close to midnight, I recorded it on vhs tape but since there were commercial ads the original duration is inflated. I let the tape continue recording the show In Living Color after the Exorcist ended until the tape ran out. One fine day, my parents were out sleeping over at my sister’s house leaving me all alone at home at night. I am not insane enough to watch The Exorcist in such situation but I needed to reel the tape fast forward in order to access and watch In Living Color. I remember of fast forwarding only about 2 hours and 7 minutes then press play on the remote control. Imagine my horror and shock when the scene that exploded on tv at cranked up volume was that of Regan roaring and sticking her tongue at the 2 priests. That completely freaked me out; I turned off the tv and turned on all the lights that night while sleeping. It’s ok if I watched it from start to finish but not smack right in the middle of a scene from this movie.

When I first saw this movie, there was something that messed with my mind for a long time. When Damian first showed up at the house. Karl was moving a chair away from the door and said, "it wants no straps." Then the door opens to see a very sick looking Reagan tied down to her bed. Why would they need to block the door if she was tied to her bed? Then, in another scene, Lt. Kinderman is looking up at her window and sees her shadow moving around. My imagination went wild thinking about what this thing would do to everyone in that house, knowing that it had killed Burke. Can you see yourself waking up in the middle of the night to that thing staring at you from the foot of your bed or on your ceiling? You would be waking up from a restless sleep just to be attacked by a monster. Everyone has to sleep sometime.

When they found the head of Pazuzu at the dig site a gush of wind blew out of the hole , Pazuzu was the king demon of the wind and when they say Evil vs Evil they are referencing when Pazuzu would intervene against other demons on humans behalf , people still wear apotropaic amulets with his supposed likeness. William Friedkin the director of the movie did a intriguing interview where he talks about faith and the presence of good and evil in our lives , the case has become an American folkloric legend with many diverse stories with different locations - States , the actual case occurred in 1949 in Cottage City Maryland and there's a factual article about the Exorcism called The Haunted Boy of Cottage City . You nailed the part about the movie being a slow start as the characters backgrounds are being developed and the suspense slowly building Friedekin admits there are parts definitely given the Hollywood treatment but there a few telling scenes that ring true one being the Ouija board a lot of people blow this off as a sort of superstitious novelty knickknack it is Not ! In fact it is still sold in the Board Game section right along with Candyland and Monopoly . The other part was the medical examinations in order for the Rituala Romanum Exorcismus to begin the person must exhibit certain changes in their personality which Regan did in the movie. Most Doctors diagnose this condition as a mental illness that can be treated with medications . . . can it really ? There are many people out there who hear voices telling them to harm themselves and others and sadly they listen to the voices . Some of the most haunted places around the world are old abandoned Medical asylums where they treated and sometimes mistreated and abused patients. The Ghost hunters that go into these places run into entities which they say give off evil vibes. William Friedkin was given permission by the Vatican to film the ninth part of an actual Exorcism and it's in his documentary The Devil and Father Amorth , it's nothing like the Exorcist movie , no spinning heads or regurgitating Pea Green soup. My favorite Bits are when little Chucky is laying in bed and you can see the fear in his eyes as knows Father Merrick is coming whom he had battled before . . . and was cast out. The other Bit was when the demon showed itself near the end, wings and all . Liala the tears are the product of your kind , compassionate and empathetic nature let them flow other be damned . Fun fact Max von Sydow ( Father Merrick ) Portrayed Jesus Christ in the movie " The Greatest Story ever Told " just eight years before the Exorcist. The difference in appearance is striking , Brilliant makeup in the Exorcist he was only 44. And yes it is more than a horror Movie There Are More Things in Heaven and Earth than that are Dreamt of in our Philosophies . Sorry for writing a book . Peace 🪶🪶 two times .

Tom Bermingham has sadly passed away. The Figurine Merrin found was the image of the Demon he had exorcised before, so he knew the Demon was back. The Demon's Goal all along was to settle his beef with Merrin and collect Karras's soul, so in the End the Demon won. After seeing this in the Theater, My Aunt threw up in the theater and was violently ill for days afterward, needing alot of hugs from me and the Family, and she would break down crying.

The best horror movies are the ones that grab you by the throat, build up a lot of suspense, and hit you hard when the time comes for violence, gore or just gross stuff; but what they ALSO have is great characters that you feel for, and involve you in the story on an emotional level. I don't care too much about many modern horror movies because they most of it is easy jump scares and characters that i don't really care all that much about anyway because they feel like they've just been written for a script. In the Exorcist, we see really people with ordinary lives and circle of friends and then just bad shit happens to them.

Cool reaction , great movie. I've seen The Exorcist hundreds of times over the years and I feel perhaps it's greatest virtue is not really the "horror" aspect..but it's believability (through great filmmaking, character development, great acting, and great storytelling). The movie does take it's time with the storytelling, thus allowing character development.. If it didn't, an audience wouldn't have cared as much for the the girl, the mom, the priest, etc.. and it wouldn't have as much emotional impact. It's also one of those rare films that you can watch many times and have a different experience. When I first saw it (late 70's, HBO) I seen it as any other horror film, then for a while I really appreciated the aesthetic and beauty of the cinematography. Years later, as a parent, I see the movie through the eyes of the mother, and now with reaction vids, etc... It really stands the test of time.

----- @edgarcia4794 ----- - That's not entirely true... Yes, the demonic possession aspect of a 'Ouija Board' really took off after the release of 'The Exorcist'. But that's not to say that it wasn't popular before this... In fact, the 'Ouija Board' outsold 'Monopoly' in 1967. The 'Ouija Board' has been around since the late 1800s. So it has a very long history... -----

The novel by William Peter Blatty was based on an actual exorcism of a 14 year old boy from Maryland which took place in St. Louis, Missouri in 1948. It took several weeks, the last few took place in the old Alexian Brothers hospital in south St. Louis, which as since been torn down. According to the priests journals, the events were similar to those in the movie but a bit toned down, no spinning heads or floating beds. Also, the part of Father Dyer, the younger priest who gave last rites at the end, was played by Fr. William J. O'Malley, a Jesuit priest who was brought onto the film originally as a consultant, but then given a small part. Father O'Malley, until his recent passing, taught at Fordham Prep School in the Bronx, NY.

People rewatch The Exorcist year after year not because they will ever experience a real exorcism, but they will experience the death of one or both of their parents. The Karras side of the story is what people relate to and why they'll watch the Exorcist over and over again like "The Seventh Seal". The exorcism is just a metaphor for the guilt that Karras, and most people, experience from the death of a parent. That makes The Exorcist more than just a horror movie, it's also one of the few outstanding existential films in the history of cinema.

The Exorcist is a very emotional film because it deals with children and parenting. Regan and her mother and Karras and his mother. Very real. very emotional. very scary.

Pazuzu wins at the end. He accomplished killing merrin and father Karis. The small relic that the detective finds at the bottom of the stairs is a turtle Regan made from clay. There were many by the window. I don't know if you noticed. That's he asked who's the artist. Also. When father Karis first enters the room . The butler told kriss macneal . It wants no straps. Meaning Regan isn't there anymore. There many more Easter eggs if you see the message of it. Also you should see . The version you never seen. Or it think it's the director's cut. But wow. That was a good movie and set the bar on demonic possession movies to follow. None have came close with exception of a few. But kudos. Mate

I actually got back home a week ago from Central Florida to attend Halloween horror nights at Universal Studios, and one of the haunted houses I went through was called The Exorcist: Believer and it's based on the new movie that came out. I haven't watched the new movie yet, but I do plan on seeing it as soon as it's available for rent.

An all-out film making effort. To the point of refrigerating the whole bedroom. Very shocking at the time. Some members of the sneak preview audience ran from the theater. Blair had a stand-in for the crucifix scene, the last scene of her being beaten and some other particularly violent scenes. The Church became involved in intense discussions and criticism of the film, relapsed Catholics recontacted the Church. people called wanting exorcisms. Theaters reported almost having to keep plumber on site to deal with massive vomiting in their restrooms, but it would have been a much bloodier film, but they needed an R rating. Blair, today 64 years old, received death threats and lived a somewhat unconventional life, doing drugs and dating Rick James for a while, supposedly aborting his baby. There is a large body of writing about the film, it's making and it's aftermath. Watching the film requires some dedicated attention. Shallow members of younger generations who tend to stay on their phones during it, almost take it as a comedy, because the tempo of the cuts are lost on them.

I saw this film when it was first released in 1973. It was quite an experience, waited in line for tickets, people leaving the theater looking like a wreck, no banter it seemed that everyone was quiet. During the film people were screaming and getting sick especially during the vomiting scene. I have never experienced such a spectacle before. I just had to read the book which was also unsettling. Love your reaction especially in the beginning when you were speculating on whT you thought would happen. The only thing close to a jump scare was when the phone rang.

That's not how the movie ends. The director thought it wold be cool to bring up dread and suspense by cutting off the last couple of minutes. The writer was incensed that he did that. It was like those cheaply made horror flicks in the 1950s where "the end" would scroll up on the screen followed by a question mark "?" scrolling up right afterwards. Many people say the original release is the one you have to see and that the later release only has a worthless extra scare scene that detracts. I obviously disagree with that. It's too bad you didn't pick the release of which the writer approved. It has an ending that's not pretentious, an ending that's the period at the end of the sentence.

In the version that Blatty prefers we see Father Dyer and Kinderman strike up a friendship discussing classic films. That scene allows a smoother transition to Blatty's film Legion.

A lot of people say that the movie isn't scary because it doesn't have much in the way of jump scares. But that sort of fear is simply a reaction. True horror is more of an emotion - and this movie excels at being so unsettling that even after multiple viewings, it still gives a knot of tension at the base of the neck

The shocks and horrors of this movie give it its fame, no doubt. But beyond that, this is s deeply spiritual movie, and you hit upon it perfectly at the end with Father Karras's death scene. In your reaction, you called back to the moment earlier in the film when Karras confesses, "I think I've lost my faith." He is hit very hard by the death of his mother, and he is tested in other ways too. The movie forces us to ask, "How much does your faith need to be tested before you will believe?" In Karras's case, he ultimately goes so far as to sacrifice himself, a very Christ-like thing to do, so that others may live. I think that even a person who is not religious can't help but respond to this movie on some spiritual level. And this is why the movie holds up after 5 decades. It's not just shocks and horrors, it's the questions the film makes us ask ourselves. A person may be a believer, a person may not be a believer, but whatever - there's that human need to question, to seek answers, and to ultimately believe in something.

I saw this movie when I was 12 years old in the theatre. There were people standing around outside with signs protesting the movies language and graphic violence. You must understand there was nothing like this before. During the show people got up, screamed and ran out. One guy got up and vomited in the isle. It did scare me. These incidents occurred all over and many towns banned the movie. Same thing in UK. Ouja boards took a big down hill. We use to play with them all the time. U can make your own draw the diagram and get a light glass. The spirts do answer questions that you cannot know the answer to. The main thing is to tell them in a firm voice "GO" when done playing. We never had trouble This movie is based on a true possession but the victim was a 14 year old boy. the Vatican has sealed the record so not much more is known. Yes crying is a bit unusual. Most utube reactors say it was ""Disturbing". I think its the most scary movie of all time. The second is ALIEN '79. If you havent seen it check it out

So many pro tips on this...look up in here, any shorts or documentary on it. It still sets the standard for horror! To put movies up with this I would say first 3 evil dead, drag me to hell( same director 😮) the descent, barbarian, the nun, woman in black, the shining, and as good or better than this, hereditary! The old priest was only 42, makeup job. He had some trouble getting roles after this because directors thought he was older! The green puke hit him in the face, it wasn't supposed to but the director had it happen for a more surprised look on his face! Sometimes the director fired gunshots next to an actor, for A very surprised look on their faces! He kept the room at 40 degrees! The mom was permanently hurt during her fight scene with Reagan! The woman who does the voice was originally uncredited, she didn't want it known it was her! Orson Welles called her the greatest voice actress of all time! She smoked cigs and drank whiskey daily her whole life! Linda had to have 24/7 security for almost a year, people were convinced she was possessed! Basically this movie is a second rematch. Marron found the idol, and the Catholic pendant, in the beginning. I'm guessing the pendant was with the idol, to keep it contained. Likely it was this demon, Pazuzu or Paimon. Then his exorcism that lasted 6 months in Africa, it was this demon again. Somehow, the pendant made it's way to the younger priest who wore it for protection and a piece of the idol, made it to this house.

And now...read the book. The point of the possession is to instil despair into the loved ones - Regan is not affected by it. This is so far removed from modern "horror" films, which rely on jump scares and gore, whereas this is largely psychological. The only film I can think of which compares with this in the lasting effect it had on me is The VVitch.

I really enjoyed your expressive reaction yo the Exorcist. I had read the book and daw it in Pittsburgh, the 2nd wk. it came out. Lovsl TV news was covering the lines waiting to enter or grt tickets. EMTs were assisting patrons who fainted/ became hysterical. It was crazy. I was a Soph. @ Duwuesne and daw theovie w 2 friends. Blew our minds. A week later, I swear this is true, my griend eas deeply affected by the movie + jumped out his 4yh floor dorm window. Put under pysch evaluation for 60 days. But did tecover and went back and graduated. Anyway the point of this comment is I highly recommend uour tead the book. The depth of the characters, the plot twists and suspense will keep you up late since you can't stop reading. It is in my view a deeply religious novel and well worth your time. Keep up you good work.😊

20:54 "I can't even take this seriously." What Reagan was doing wasn't the point. At all. It was about the fathers. And it was very serious. Esp didn't warrant an eyeroll. That wasn't about what the demon was saying through her... it was about those two godly men trying to battle this demon and save this child. You concentrate on minor things. That was sad there. But it was beautiful because the priests were using all their knowledge and strength before that kid was dead. Max Von Sydow and Ellen Burnstyn were chosen to head this cast because they were outstanding actors. Max was huge. So this was no "horror flick". This was cinema.

That was a fantastic reaction.....to a movie with a hell of a lot of reactions! You're right, it is more than a horror movie and in fact William Friedkin (the director) talked about approaching it not as a horror movie but simply as a realistic imagining of a supernatural event. The 70s were the height of realism and naturalism in movies (before Star Wars ended it all!). Most movies had endings that were sad, disturbing, haunting or just simply leaving you with a wtf feeling. And that extended even into the first batch of those late 70s escapist movies. If you think about it, "Jaws" is a the same kind of thing, a realistic imagining of a rogue shark. "Close Encounters" is a realistic imagining of UFO sightings. "Alien" is a realistic imagining of a futuristic encounter with a hostile life force. etc. Anyway, LOVED the reaction and please do movies from the 70s (and before!) as much as possible, there have been great, great movies every year that transcend time, going back to the earliest silent movies. Seriously!!!!
