It's interesting when you talk about spending 20 to 40 hours on this piece and having to take reference photos of yourself in the same outfit, you're basically just describing the process of that a traditional painter would use for a finished piece. You may not have hit all of you goals (isn't that how it bees usually) but I think you accomplished a lot of what you were going for. Looks dope to me, would love to see more of these display pieces.

Scott, loved this video. I think you really nailed one of the most important aspects of mini painting, that many of us forget. We do it, because we love it. Its so easy to get caught up in competition painting, and commission painting, and getting the amount of views and likes and (well even more so when its your business), but its absolutely worth the time just to paint a miniature sometimes and enjoy the process.

I love this illustrators approach! I think it's really important to find joy in all the processes of art making too. taking reference photos, finding the right lighting, getting a fold just right in a hoodie can all be an absolute blast. I have illustration friends who love to post all their silly self shot reference, weird faces. There's no reason it has to feel like extra work if you can change your mindset a bit and think of it as part of the fun! thank you for all that you do.

hey scott, i can't tell you how much I enjoy your content! I love how you show your whole process and evaluate what was worth it and what was maybe too much. along the way there are so much tips and tricks I learn from every video! the editing and videography is top notch. the picture in picture shots for example are not for flexing editing skills but they are adding so tons of value. I also love how you give your honest opinion on stuff and not fall back to well-meant platitudes that doesn't offend anyone. besides that i think you are hilarious without trying hard like some other content creators in this genre! thanks for great content! I am very glad you are doing well! can't wait for next video!

esgetit Awesome work on the figure by the way. I really loved the comic style you were able to execute. And to echo your sentiment, I've also been trying to remind myself to focus on the joy of what it is I love doing. I've spent these past years drowning myself in the negativity of feeling less than perfect, and always feeling like I'm failing for not attaining what it is I want to see out of my painting. Paint because you love to, just because 1 figure or 1 thing you might have tried didn't turn out to be perfect, that doesn't mean that it has the be the last time you ever try. Just remember to enjoy it. Thanks, Scott.

Looks great dude, the stylised approach is so much more intersting to look at and pairs really well with the style of the sculpt. Mike Mignola is a comic artist that has had a big impact on me (in terms of drawing). I love how dynamic his use of light and dark is, it pushed me to be more experimental in how I approached adding flat black shadows and it really suprised me how much of a drawing can be hidden in shadow yet still appear be interseting and detailed, especially when the lighting effect is done right and the small elements of releif from the black imply shape through the lighting. The way it changes the mood and allows for the art to not be a distraction from the story by simplifying it to a level where what is needed is conveyed without adding superfluous detail is bordeline scientific in it's delivery . I guess that can be applied to mini painting, we are basically telling a story with each paint job and the style in which it's painted is part of that story, it can affect the interation and change the context and impact of a piece dramatically.

One thing to help sell shading is cross hatching, lines of black spaced or close together to shade rather than just dark areas. You can then add perpendicular lines to deepen the tone even more. Can do this over cell shading or just one tone. 80s comics and older are really good examples of this. Awesome attempt and way to just go for it.
