@@vermillionvrI agree! I love your app! I do wish, however, you’d give a little credit to Bill Alexander… I know everyone knows Bob Ross, but Bill not only “created” this style, but was Bob’s mentor (and eventually they became bitter competition for each other, sadly). Perhaps you already know all this given the depth of your app; if you haven’t, check out the original “happy little trees” Mr. Mighty brush himself on Bill Alexander’s “Magic of Oil Painting”… I like both guys, but imo Bill is the master, his skill and breadth of subject matter has yet to be surpassed by Bob.
And keep in mind: never worry, there are just happy accidents! 😊 Vermillion got me into painting, although I never had anything to do with it. Great tutorial, thanks!
After 3 years of VR this is hands down the best app on the Oculus store. I use it every single day. I’m on painting #352 in Vermillion and have made a ton of RU-vid videos
Excellent work on this guys. It is so realistic with the brush strokes. Also genius to put in a browser, so you can watch videos like Bob Ross. May you have a happy little tree day.
Great tutorial. Got it yesterday, still has a lot to learn, but enjoying it a lot already. The way he rolls his eyes sometimes I feel like he is judging my painting skill 🤣
This is awesome. I always liked bob ross tutorials but never tried them because i didnt have the tools. Now i can do whatever i want in this game. Thanks for this showcase
I tried this last night for the first time and I couldn’t stop it was so much fun. I always wanted to paint a bob ross painting. I can’t wait to paint more on Vermillion.
This is really an accomplishment. To create this tool and then to be able to show it off like this. What's remarkable is how non-technical it is. It works like a real setup.
As both a developer and a hobby painter, this is so cool from both ends! I also enjoy that the painting you chose to do was based on the first Bob Ross I ever tried to emulate on the Procreate app on my iPad, and your program makes it look way easier; gone are the extra hours of trial and error trying to emulate Bob with digital brushes not suited for oil style paintings. The thing that impressed me most, was how you've achieved making the higher thickness paint look like it's actually coming off the canvas the same way it would on a real canvas. It's tiny details like that, that really up how immersive the program is. If you ever decide to release add-ons the emulate other painting mediums, I will definitely purchase all of them :) But no need to rush as there's like 30 Seasons of Bob Ross on RU-vid that I'll need to get through first haha.
Just bought Vermillion for quest 2. Absolutely incredible app. I've never painted in real life but love watching Bob Ross videos. Looking forward so much to trying this out. What a great tutorial. Fantastic painting, thankyou for sharing
I've never painted before!! I've always loved watching Bob Ross. This is such a great program. I absolutely love it and thank you so much for developing this!! I can't wait to use it every day!!
I'm really enjoying vermillion and tried some bob ross tutorials, but it would be nice to have more vermillion specific tutorials like this one as some of the brushes don't work exactly as physically brushes.
Hey Richard. I have started posting step-by-step tutorials on Vermillion as well. Here is a link to my first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kBoq_qCt9ss.html
This dear man is absolutely phenomenal!! I've actually given up all my other apps and spend my days painting now! I actually have both the Steam and Meta versions and I love them both for different reasons. Thank you Thomas for your fantastic app and your wonderful tutorial!❤
I love this app on the quest3 love it with the color pass through and the ability to hang the paintings the wall after. It so cool when you move the Edsel and other items across your real floor.
This is amazing. I might have to watch the mountain snow part another 5 or 6 times though. I always wanted beautiful mountains but can never pull it off
What? What?! You loaded an updated version?! Oh I can't wait to throw this one on. The first version of this turned out so amazing so I can't wait to give this one a go. Thank you so much for creating not only this paint along, but Vermillion. I had never used oil paintings before, but thanks to you and your paint along I have my own landscape as my desktop background. Imagine how inspiring that is. Keep on inspiring, there aren't enough muses in the world these days.
That's great! Yeah, I had to do an updated version because some functionality changed, mainly the palette knife stipple pattern is now based on the angle of the knife, rather than the pressure.
@@Lhorkan Oh, marvelous! That pallet knife is the only thing that gave me a headache, mild a headache as it was. Though mostly I figure it had to do with me having only the slightest idea what I was doing. Given I came out with a landscape, victory!
I've always wanted to try painting, but have never felt strongly enough about it to invest in all the materials needed to do it. I have VR though, so this app was an excellent way to test the waters to see if it's something I'd like to pursue.
Wow i bought this for a close friend and a few weeks later she bought it for me to , I was painting this evening and its a great expiernce , i really like the pass through option where you can still see your enviroment , would be cool to have a beach hut inviroment as well Could you also make the brushes flex and bend better when your pressing down on the pallet and canvas please For the peeps that are wondering to buy this , i woulld say 100 percent its just amazing and well done for the team who put this together I will be recomending this to people to friends and family
I happened to stumble upon this game on Steam's recommended games; best purchase I've made. I can see myself spending a lot more time in this than VR games. This is coming from a non-painter, but I find so much solace and relief even as I was doing my first painting ever. Finished this piece in like 3 hours LOL, and it still doesn't look as good; but I'm proud of it.
@@vermillionvr yup, already posted a positive steam review. Kinda wished I had known there was an oculus quest version, but I wouldn't mind buying it twice.
I have started to post tutorials on my channel as well if you want to check them out. Here is a link to the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kBoq_qCt9ss.html
Hey Bella, I have started posting tutorials on my channel if you want to check them out. Here is a link to the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kBoq_qCt9ss.html
This would be so so helpful for me because my mom is a painter and I want to get as good as her at it, but I want to somewhat know what I’m doing before I start spending a ton of money on good paints and brushes :D It’s also (personally) much more preferable than the painting app made by google because that one is 3d
In my life, i always drawn very simple drawings using a pen in school or some crayons and such. Then i moved out to Paint and Photoshop, as painting in real life gives you a lot of work and the creativity process is lost, at least for me. As i'm a person that can make a lot of mistakes and has to always press CTRL+Z to undo things. It's a thing i never read anyone else saying. Maybe in VR this could change my life and i could know if i can paint ''manually''. I'm literally dying by inside dreaming with a Quest 2 and programs like these will be a life changer if everything works fine for me. This is amazing!
I am starting to post full step-by-step tutorials on my channel too if you want to check them out! Here is a link to the first one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kBoq_qCt9ss.html
Thanks from Germany, what you create is amazing. The first really impressive step to paint in VR. Beste hopes to you and many more Ideas. Kind regards, Jogi Kossi
Thank you and huge congratulations for this amazing app. Just bought it and followed your instructions, that helped a lot. I did not see the 3 hours spent since but absolutely love it. This is extremely brilliant, a gem. Cheers
Hello Thomas Thank you for making this vr expirence Please please please please make this multiplayer it would be super creative , it would make a lot of people happy , multiplayer is the way forward , and would be a treat to see this happen , also important to have choice of a few nature inviroments to paint in 😁😁
Yeah, I definitely do want multiplayer! It's a big challenge though. The first step will be a gallery where you can mount your paintings, and invite friends over in VR to come look at them with a free demo of Vermillion. I'll see what I can do for a nature environment!
Me and my wife both have Quest so we both painted the Robin at the same time last night. VR date night. We had a good time. However I had an issue with mine. It said to press X to erase a mistake. It wouldn't work and I spent most of my date night in the tutorial. I finally got it to work and get past that part by changing to a left handed painter then switching back to right hand after the tutorial but on mine the X doesn't work at all when your right handed but when you switch hands that becomes A works great that way. Can you please fix that in a patch for us right handed players?
Can you use this to make super colorful, cartoony paintings as well or is it just for like realistic stuff? I like realistic stuff, but I like colorful eye bleeding stuff too. Like rainbow gore for example.
I love this game 🤩🎯. Just got it and can't stop painting 🎨. Great job 👍🤓. Now you need to be able to display your paintings in the room where you paint. Or make a gallery where you can visit in VR
@@lindamaynard4275 You can export your paintings, and send them to a print service of your choice. Note that the PC version has a higher painting resolution than the Quest version. You get it for free on the Rift store, so if you have a PC capable of running VR, this would be the preferable option for print.

Amazing App, I recommend it to all my artist friends. By the way, how do you record these avatar videos in Third person?
I know this is an old video, but I would just like to ask, if an artist wants to sell their paintings from Vermilion (say, by taking a picture of the VR painting then making digital art prints), would they be legally allowed to do so? Hope you can answer this question. Vermilion is great for artists who don't want the mess of a traditional painting but still want the tactile experience of doing one. Cheers!
you should add a water option.. so you could mix the actual colors to water... and I'm thinking about how you could reach Sketchbook team so you could sell this app to them..
Hello Thomas. Full of anticipation, I bought your great development Vermillion and then found that it doesn't work on my Occulus 1. Will this be possible at some point. I would love to paint with Vermillion. Please let me know. Thank you and best regards, Ines
If you have it on Steam, you already have access to more studios, including a lakeside cabin. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2822067360
Thanks! There's a floppy icon on the screen where you can save & load your paintings. There's a big "Save & Load" label next to it until you visit the tab. Your paintings are autosaved every five minutes as well.
The Vermilion VR saves to Facebook as 72DPI. This is a low resolution. How do I save to a higher resolution, let's say 150DPI? There is also a link to export to a file, but that goes automatically to a file I do Not know the name of. Perhaps the resolution is higher on the file option, if you can tell me how to access it.
Great video! I am going to have to buy Vermillion now. I have brushworks and its very cool but new and vermillion has features that brushworks doesn't and vise versa. I love the resizing option to do detail that is awesome! The brushes explanation was great in this vid as well. I have a question though, someone commented about 'straight line' and 'wrist control' below, what are they referring to? Does this app actually allow you to hold the brush without holding the controller? That is the biggest thing I find awkward, but then I am very very new to the VR world, but its especially awkward when trying to paint, even if you adjust your grip. I noticed in your video that the brush followed your hand (wo controller) but IDK if that is just a product of the recording?
Hi! Thanks for your interest in Vermillion. You're still painting while holding the controllers, as the controllers give you pinpoint accuracy over the brush with no latency, which is not currently possible with hand tracking. The straight line and wrist support options are two of the stabilizer options in Vermillion, where you lock the brush movement to a line of your choice, or where you lock your wrist to an axis. The latter simulates a "mahlstick", a virtual stick onto which you rest your wrist while painting.
@@vermillionvr Thank you so much for your quick response. I have been watching vermillion tutorials for a few hours and I love it. I have learned so much!
@@vermillionvr I purchased the app and spent the rest of my battery doing the wonderful tutorial and getting acquainted...I LOVE this app! I am soo bummed about my battery. Need to look into options for that lol. I love that you can hold the brushes soo much better, in here, I don't feel awkward at all even though I'm holding a controller...I LOVE that! There are soo many great features about this app, I could post for days on this. Thank you for a great rewarding and fun app and experience! And I've only just begun! (I hope I can still see the painting that I did during the tutorial, but since my battery died, I haven't checked it yet.) Oh, can we hang the paintings on the wall?
@@chirlsaylor6351 Glad to hear you're having such a good time! Your painting is auto-saved every five minutes, so it'll still be there when your Quest is charged. 😅 There's an official Meta as well as third party battery straps for Quest, you can check those out if you want to extend your time at the easel. And yes, you can also hang your paintings on the wall, both in the virtual studios as well as in your house when you're in passthrough! You can change which studio you're in, and switch to passthrough, from the Settings panel on the floating screen. Approach a wall and point your controller at it, you'll see a preview of where the painting can go. Click the + icon with the trigger and you'll be able to choose which painting to hang. You can move them around on the wall by grabbing them with the grab button on the controller. It's always highly appreciated if you leave a review on the store, that helps other people know what to expect!
In answer to my own question now that I own Vermillion, the feel of the brushes are so much more realistic than they are in Brushworks, I do not mean to dis a new startup, but this app is the bomb. I have both and you can clearly see which one has been around longer. One thing that is cool in brushworks is you can hang your art on your studio wall...IDK if this option is avail in Vermillion, but if not, maybe that should be next? That being said, I would say that for a few bucks you should own both and play around. It is soo much fun to play in these apps...I just wish theyd make a battery that literally lasted 8 hours, not a purported 8hrs, which I have yet to see. I think you get a full 2-3 max hour on the quest 2. But out of all of my downloads, this one is my favorite hands down! Well done!
The painting resolution on Quest is lower than on PC, but that is the only difference. I've worked hard to give it full feature parity with PC - it even has more features actually: passthrough!
my issue is the paint never comes off correct or runs out fast, sometimes blending reflection works well and other times it acts like it has no paint and dise snall strokes. always imsoires getting real paint supply as itll be easier to mimic Bob's techniques still love the game even if I can't master its quriks
Just start with a clean fan brush, and then blend the clouds on the canvas. The brush picks up small amounts of paint from the canvas, but that's the very thing that allows it to blend.
Not in this video of course as it's 2 years old and the MX Ink just released, but otherwise yes, I do prefer it for painting in Vermillion over controllers!
Can i play this multiplayer with a friend, so that we can see each other while we paint, he paints his own and i paint my own near each other in the same vr room?
With paint on the knife, hold it with the sharp side against the canvas and scrape it alongside it. That's all! Play with the canvas mixing sensitivity setting under Settings > Painting to get the snow to mix less or more with the mountain underneath.
