This was a really good video. I’ve seen others where they’ve talked about filing IFR flight plans using ForeFlight, and using past app approved routes. But this is the first time I ever saw somebody do it in real time. Plus, it was cool to see the actual flight planning, filing, and then subsequent flight using Syd flight plan. this is great Contant for those of us who are beginning to embark upon our own training. Excellent narration, this really helps us learn real world IFR or at least is a good refresher for best methods. It’s all about the building blocks. No need to excuse it. Loved this preflight detail! Great video! Curious about the beginning when you said you’d be leaving at 10:10. Is that when ATC should expect you to take off? And what happens if that time is incorrect? (I noticed we went past that with all the explanations) Great landing! I kept thinking you were already on the ground. 😂

I got lost somewhere over pudje since it is in the opposite direction you wanted to fly, looks like you were using it as a shortcut to fiddle with tech as a way to auto-load all the waypoints from vdubb? On the taxi, you got clearance for g f and e cross 14 but then what? Looks like you stayed on e and then must have had to take d to the beginning of 05? k
@@miketaylor3947 correct, VDUBB is an intermediate fix. I load PUDJE as the initial then select VDUBB in the flight and select direct to. Also correct 05 at delta.

Great video. My brother and I bought an old Cessna 170 and used to hop around Michigan. All VFR. Your IFR equipment is mind boggling. How would you do it without that plotter? Just file direct and let ATC tell you as you said you normally do? Or is there a decent manual procedure?
@@daleyurk4369 sure, I would look at all of the arrivals available for the airport and pick what I thought was the correct one. Then it’s a matter of seeing what ATC assigns.
It is best to be established on the inbound course before reaching the final approach fix. It is to avoid having to align the course and the glideslope at the same time. The controller was giving me the option to turn into the inbound segment of the approach course line in order to do that. Given I was in visual conditions, and I could clearly see my intercept on the GPS, I opted not to capture that far out.
I noticed that ForeFlight was not totally updated for charts as you were loading the plan. I assume you update the Aspen every 28 days. More on that next time perhaps. Good videos. Thanks 9:25

As an IFR student pilot, could you have simply “Bluetooth’ed” the flight plan (and subsequently any changes en route) from your iPad in ForeFlight to the GTN750? This would ensure to limit possible input mistakes during mechanical transport of the electronic flight plan. I use a GNX175, which appears to be very similar to the 750 (just a smaller screen), and it allows me to do that. Also, my iPad screen is bigger, so it is easier for me to use and see. What are your thoughts? Do you have an email address? Maybe list it in your bio section.

Great video, really like the flight planning process and using some of Foreflight's told. New to your channel, and I like what I see! May I suggest not saying "for" before your tail number, can be confused with "four." I teach all my students to avoid ambiguity. However, the law of primacy says it will be a difficult change if you were to want to change your radio call structure.

If you liked the more direct route to the north, why not ask for it? FF showed requested route and expected route, does that mean you can put in a desired route and acceptable/expected alternate route, in case your primary choice isn’t available? Also, does FF show when a flight plan is approved? If not, how do you know how long to wait before calling for IFR clearance? Almost landed on the 2000-ft/ers 😉
I filed the REEKO3 because all of the others had only been approved 1 time. My hypothesis was I was not going to get what I filed and I did not want to skew the test by picking an obviously obscure route. I did not ask for alternate routing to see how this played out. I do not normally ask for big changes to assigned routes. I will ask to skip a waypoint just to shorten the flight a little bit. FF gives you and “acknowledgement” that it was filed. Flight plans are not approved until they are assigned by arc. Flight plans are active and waiting on you 15 min prior to departure and 2 hours after.
If I’m heading towards buildup, I usually ask the controller to vector me a little bit around the weather before I get into unknown turbulence. One other thing, flying with flaps is drag. If you don’t need them, don’t use them. Fuel is expensive enough without having to impose more drag on the aircraft.
This was fantastic, I haven’t been up in about a month which is a lot for me since I’ve graduated to private, and with now getting on instrument your input and precision with checks and departure/approach was on point. I use flaps as speed brakes in descent because to slow from descent speeds to flap speed then gear speed takes a big power or reduction or too long to bleed off the speed. Once I was in the terminal area, I left the flaps up to avoid configuration changes. It’s not a big deal VMC but IMC I avoid it and I was practicing as though I was IMC.

Edit after finishing the video. I really liked how you emphasized the “cleared to cross” the runway as instructed. I do the same when reading back *MONITOR* or *CONTACT* ground, when landing. Subscribed.
I have looked into this, "PACK" will give you the latest info but so will "Briefing". "Briefing" is what more accurately meets the requirement in 91.103 for "all information" pertaining to the flight.
@@TheFlyingSalesman I’m just south of Houston at Pearland Regional KLVJ. I liked when you displayed the Nearest Airport list in the GPS in case of an unexpected need to deviate . I shared your video with a few other IFR students. Actually you did a better job explaining the process than some CFII I’ve seen. lol
@@TheFlyingSalesman I run duel 750’s in my bird with the bottom unit displaying the flight plan. That way when ATC gives me a change it’s quickly accessible. With the glide ring as well as the nearest airport being pointed at on the top unit it’s the best of both worlds. My missions are on the west coast so I am over mountains a lot it’s good piece of mind having that situational awareness. Thanks for the video, the 210 is without a doubt one of the best IFR machines out there. I do agree having the airplane set up and configured early is the secret to a stable and successful approach. Are you on any of the 210 FB groups?

I'm just getting recurrent after years of airline flying. This DIY type IFR is completely different in that almost all the planning was done by the company dispatch. We just flew the plan as filed. Also, using Foreflight in new to me, so this video was quite helpful. I followed along with your planning on my iPad. i sure wish they'd find a better way of locating and deciphering NOTAMS that might affect a flight. The current system is really lacking. Thanks for the very informative video and step-by-step process.
You are welcome and thanks for the feedback. There are two convenient places to find Notams- one is from the map page, on the FPL or flightplan function, when connected to the internet there will be an exclamation point next to each airport if it has notams. The other is to send the flight plan to “flights”and on the top right there is a “messages” button that will detail notams. Hope this helps and blue skies! -TFS

Nicely done. I do the same as you and file direct usually and expect a STAR into any one of those airports in the DFW airspace. I will also choose a suggested route too from time to time. It’s nice that Foreflight will give you an updated route expected so you’re ready to copy form clearance. I am in a pre-buy with a T210N - will have to touch base, maybe at OSH.
I’m about to start the IFR training and just finished reading the Instrument Handbook. This IFR flying video helps me understand the full flow. What a timing! 👏 👍

This was absolutely excellent. Love this, again absolute excellent example of real world planning, preparing and flying IFR. You should do another when you have actual weather to give another example in the soup.
I've got my IR ride coming up soon and have been scrounging the internet for as many IFR flight videos I can find so I can absorb as much real world IFR information as possible and this video was a perfect example of that! Love the content!
