I love how you brought up the dichotomy of gatekeeping what it means to be punk and how fucking with gatekeepers is, itself, a punk act. Punk is a lot of things, but a stickler for the rules is not one of them

You know, given that the zombies are drawn to music, you could probably set up a music player somewhere that zombies can't access, surround the nearby area zombies can access with spike traps, and then just leave until the battery runs out. It'll help draw out any dead in the area and kill them for you. Just an idea for a long-term plan.

The visceral disappointment of onion rings gone too soon in the Cataclysm. Sometimes it's the little things that get your survivor going and keeps them going.

Great series. About shift+V menu. If you press "TAB" in it, you will change it from creatures mode to items mode. It has filter search too, so you can stand in the middle of very big room and check all needed items, don't need to manually check every cell with "x".

The mall was getting really cozy! It's fun to settle into one specific place, I have a serious problem with jetting around several gigs of terrain in search of rare stuff. But can't stay put forever. Super enjoying this!

Changing inventory pocket priorities and settings is something I need to experiment more with. All I've done before is tweak so that certain items are whitelisted for certain boxes or bags, didn't even know there was a priority option until it was brought up in the video.

I just adore the mix of Rp, adorkable jokes which i like to imagine our stalwart survivor is making in a attempt to stay sane in such nightmare, and just the lecture on punk and the frankly really funny and insightful subtitles ya put! Really makes the time fly by ^^

Finally! I've been waiting for the archery mayhem from the episode #1! Using a bow without a quiver is a chore. Each arrow takes 350+ moves only to be loaded (because apart from quivers the only other containers long enough to accomodate an arrow are rucksack main compartments or a golf bag, not counting "loop of rope") this tanks rate of fire. Also, if I am not mistaken (and I am not sure), the "primitive" bow accessories (dampening kit, arrow rest) can only be installed on primitive bows (wooden/bone ones), so a compound hunting bow requires "modern" accessories. Luckily, "bow dampening kit" is craftable. Unluckily, the recipe is locked behind a manual ("Archery for Kids" or "Zen and the Art of Archery").

I never in my life expected to think to myself "Oh shit, the New Worm Girl Dropped" but, here we are. Looking forward to seeing how the Mall Arc concludes.

Thanks for the history of the punk term. It is always interesting to hear how words and usage evolve over time, especially as a non native speaker.

It feels like you're becoming more powerful now, I mean before it was all the strength you had , even with many guns, to simply kill a few zombies, but now you go bow-hunting for fun LOL I am very curious to see what this series has in store next

Archery is pretty powerfull at higher levels if your strength allows you to wield bigger bows. Great video as always!

Absolutely love the "shopping" spree and some window "shopping", combined with naming the non-descript stores of the dead mall. Bring a lot of character, to something otherwise a bit boring, the roleplay goes a long way and is always appreciated. Also, I never thought about using a tablet for recipe storage, that indeed saves a lot of space for books that outlive their practical knowledge. The thumbnail regenerator from classic Resident Evil 4 is a nice touch as well. :D

Another method of lightweight recipe storage is to scan the books with the e link tablet / smartphone and then send them to a USB drive if you find one and then activating the tablet / phone, going to "manage external storage" and selecting the USB drive so you will just to carry the usb instead of the tablet for recipes

Punk isn't just a movement, it's also an aesthetic. And genre punk is much more on the aesthetic. Solarpunk isn't very punk, but by saying that, an understanding that solar is referring to solar power, and not sailing on the surface of the sun, you can develop in your mind a sense of what that should look like. Sometimes people don't understand the meaning of the words they use, like stealth, but sometimes the meaning of words just change, or words have more than one meaning. Or sometimes longer words and phrases get shortened into the same word and people forget to differentiate what they mean.

I have played Cataclysm since it was made by WhalesDev and the only way to play was to compile it yourself on Linux, and I have also yet to find a RU-vidr that makes Cataclysm watchable - I have binged this playlist and am going to be sad when I have caught up. Good work on these videos, they are really engaging - especially for being stuck in the one location since the beginning!

I haven't played CDDA and this has been my only exposure to the game. I knew there were monsters other than zombies, but I kept myself unspoiled as to what so I could be surprised when they started showing up in the playthrough. The hunter easily looks like the most dangerous foe. Faster than you and it's got claws and fangs? Yikes!

I'm working on a hobo who will be whittling his way into cultivated archery skills. Its not easy without hunter start, or spawning near a hunting supply shop. Let me put my 5 cents into this "what punk means" debate. When Cyberpunk was introduced, early works in the ganre were focused on criminal life and "pushing back against the system" usually depicted by those big corporations. However then some works appeared being set in similar universes, but written from the perspective of those corporations. And not in a way Jhonny Mnemonic is, where the protagonist starts as being part of the corporations, but then gets caught in the crossfire and flips into being underground and resisting the system. In all fairness this should've been a new genre and called something like "Cybergothic". But in reality they got shoehorned into also being called cyberpunk, despite being very unpunk. And this caused the definition of "cyberpunk" to be stretched into more generic meaning closer to "cyber-themed". However Cyberpunk sounds way cooler so the word got stuck. And then another genres started appearing. Like ones set in fantasy victoriana times with heavy emphasis on steam power. But "steampunk" also sounds way cooler that "steam-themed" so it also got named this way. And this cemented the use of "something-punk" as equivalent to "something-themed and cool" Language is not rigid. It evolves. And sometimes changes where recognition takes effort.

Damn, those simple traps really did a number on the horde. Nice. The lack of running water/hygiene still perplexes me (I know nothing about the game)

You're right on with the punk thing, but solarpunk is a little bit different as it's used for a movement not some literary genre. I still find it extremely aggravating and Not Punk as it's generally just a bastardization of ecological anarchism, but I have seen it used as a descriptor for ecological activism by people like those who destroyed the Lafarge cement plant back in december. The book is about diy catalytic cracking, a method for refining petroleum. Saying it's "for solarpunks" is a great joke

I noticed the officer at 37:26 dropped a riot armor suit, which as far as I know is a really strong set of armor against most undead for relatively low encumbrance, even when damaged somewhat - is there a reason to avoid or not bother collecting items of armor like that?

I think in a game as bleak as this I think the word that keeps player morale is progress, and I’m quite terrible at thinking of goals of my own, and suffer from analysis paralysis. When you’ve made good progress to whatever goal you like, I would be glad to hear just how much this character has improved. 100+ zombie body count besides.

The archery now reminds me of Unreal World, difficult to pull off, but very worth the trouble. ^_^

Hey, I've been loving the content, you may or may not have caused me to start a CDDA run in a mall, I'm not as good at combat as you but I've become an expert in tactical cowardice. Anyway, I feel compelled to mention, and I hope I'm not telling you things that you already know, but solarpunk isn't a genre of fiction like steampunk, it's an anti-establishment, environmentalist, political thing. I'm no expert on the subject, I've seen like one or two videos on it, but it seems pretty punk to me, if you ignore the solarpunk aesthetic that is. Also means that book might have solar and wind power stuff in there, rather than fashion accessories and themed clothing, not too useful while stuck indoors, but maybe if you make it to that electric car?

Huhhhh, I'm a sex worker myself but I had no idea punk used to mean that, or had any ties to it at all. Very interesting. I love the myriad of different words for sex worker, all with their own different flavours and connotations. A harlot or strumpet feels very different to a courtesan. Whore feels much more rough. Language is cool. Thanks for the great videos wiggly girl.

Theres even been a shift in the cyberpunk genre over the last few years, shifting away from its punk roots and turning more to represent a specific kind of retro-future aesthetic. A lot of newer cyberpunk media puts focus on flashy outfits and streetwear to the point that it drowns out a lot of the original intent behind the genre. To some extent its driven by the commodification of everything, corporations stripping cyberpunk of its anticorporate sentiment, but I don't think that has truly succeeded. At least not yet. The genre is still very punk, just with a layer of commodification over it.
