Aus-10 is actually a high end budget to low mid grade steel , it holds a lot better edge than Aus-8 , probably a bit more than Sandvik 14c28n or Vg-10 , But that really all depends on how good the heat treat is and Cold Steel usually does a great job with it and obviously Schrades isn't that good although you did put some good pressure on that thinner tip before it broke . And as far as China , their heat treats are Always suspect , its night and day between them and Taiwan, Taiwan makes good knives period .....👍🖖
@Divine_Serpent_Geh
@Divine_Serpent_Geh Год назад
The Schrade most likely gave out because that tip was ground way much thinner than the others, it also looks like it’s made of the thinnest stock. Higher cutting/slicing ability, but weaker when doing such prying tip tests. People often jump to steel spec too soon. Thickness at the edge, and the angle of the primary and secondary bevels matter much more than people think.
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 Год назад
Watching the break compared to the GI Tanto break... The Schrade took WAY more given the stabby tip. I honestly thought the wood would give first. I pushed it too hard, too far. If it was heat treat it would no way have held up to the pressure that it did.
@JohnSmith-gs4lw
@JohnSmith-gs4lw Год назад
Agreed. I wouldn’t overthink it. Steel type, heat treat, AUS 8 vs. AUS 10, socialist vs. democratic, whatever. The Schrade Extreme Survival clearly had that swedge coming down from the spine by the tip. That tip was a diamond shape cross-section scalpel out on the end. That sheep’s foot is a brutish triangle cross-section. Now, to be fair, I think that SRK-C has a swedge by the tip as well. But I think the geometry on that ES was done solely for looks and not for function. To your point: don’t call it Extreme Survival. Tacticool BS.

As soon as you pulled that one Schrade out of the sheath, just looking at the geometry I figured that would be the one to snap. A knife can be indestructible, or it can be slicey and stabby, bit it's a rarity to be both.

Hey Chris, AUS 8 has a lower carbide volume than AUS 10, which generally makes it tougher. More carbide volume increases wear resistance but lowers toughness. #2- I noticed a big difference in heat treatment of those bushman line of knives from Cold Steel. They used to have a spring temper but now they just harden it done. It is cheaper so that is probably why they do it poorly. Greed sucks.

I have a pair of Schrades 1182512 just like that one that broke the tip. I love the design, but it has a major fatal flaw: They're made of too thin of a stock. One is made from 3.8mm stock and the other from 4mm stock. A knife like that, and marketed as an extreme survival knife, should be made from stock of at least 5mm, possibly even 5.5 or 6mm.
@claypoole702

In my experience AUS-8 and AUS-10 is perfectly fine steel. Heat treats with it are important but so is blade stock or geometry. My experience... AUS-8 is more stout and can take abuse better, AUS-10 holds a better edge for a little longer. Kizyler Supreme uses these steels a bunch and their knives have always been caliber... in my experience. But TBH, I haven't purchased a knife with those steels in probably a decade now.

I am not sure I understand why people do this. I have seen many videos of others "testing" knife tips. Hardened steel ground to a point will be brittle. Two decades ago I pulled a brand new benchmade folder from my pocket to show a coworker and dropped it on a concrete floor. Lost about a quarter inch of the tip when it hit. I reground it and still use to this day. The point is i would expect most to break under that type of stress. Just my humble opinion...

It stems from the last two Cold Steel Videos where old knives that USED TO BE indestructible are now snapping like twigs. That's why.

Idk, I make small 01 knives sometimes as a hobby and smacking the edge against concrete few times to see if they chip is how I normally test to see that they're even tempered right. I'd ask for a refund/replacement. Maybe it's me being a city boy but I don't understand delicate fixed blades, why not just use a large folder at that point?

Solid vid Chris, this just reminds us to do our research before buying, especially on budget Chinese knives. Although you are not the only creator that performs torture tests (SMH) on blades, in general I have not observed a focus on safety. Schrade needs to quit with the hollow grinds on their “Survival knives” and pay attention to their heat treatment processes. About 5-6 years ago I tested the Schf2 in 1070, Schf3 in 8cr13mov and there Schf37 & 38 in 1095 steel. I also did Cold Steels SRK in SK5 and Aus-8. Also Steel Will’s Druid 200 in 9cr18mov and multiple others really not applicable here. I did edge and tip toughness... Almost all the Hollow Ground knives failed including SK5 SRK. Survivors were the Schf38, the Aus-8 SRK and the Druid 200. Also noticed big difference in edge stability between the Schf37 & Schf38. The 37’s edge damaged badly while the 38 was one of the best I tested.
