Here we are! SSN! In this first mission, we are completing our transit from San Diego to Hawaii en route to the Spratly Islands. Light resistance with two Chinese Hans.
I had this game back in the days.... a long time ago. I bought for small money. Never finished it though..... Was really hard. After "Hunt for Red October" and "Crimson Tide" this was the next logical follow-up. R.I.P Mr. Clancy.
Check out the book "Big Red" by Douglas Waller. It is a terrific book that follows the crew of and Ohio Class Sub during a three month voyage in the Atlantic.
Ohmigawd, the 90's nostalgia!!! I remember playing the hell out of it because of its ambient sound, but gameplay got old quickly. I've lost my old CD's but found an abandonware iso. I just haven't figured out how to play it on my 64 bit system (ironic, given that I can play way-older DOS games); I remember picking this up with the original Silent Hunter from the bargain rack.
Yes indeed, my first submarine game. To run it on a 64 bit operating system, you'll need to either install a 32 bit OS on a separate partition or do a 32 bit virtual machine. SSN is a 16 bit game (it's actually not DOS) so it just won't work on 64 bit, as it's only backwards compatible with 32 bit.
Played this game and read the book a long long time ago enjoyed it very much just like Jane, s Fleet Command a game of the same Era. Reading the book again after some 20 years but the scenario becomes more realistic by the year. The only difference is that the quality of the PLA navy made a quantum leap.
i'm reading hunt for red october again right now! so good. although it seems much more dated after playing a lot of dangerous waters. I really liked Without Remorse and Executive Orders. Teeth of the Tiger and Bear and the Dragon were really good too. I pretty much like all of them, I'm just thinking of the ones i particularly liked.
I remember playing this game a long time ago with my dad. He would put me on his lap and we would play this game together. A really fond memory of mine growing up. Like you I had a lot of issues installing this game and running it, and am sort of sad it seems the only way to really play this is to find an old XP box and run the game in 95 mode. Anyway, thanks for the upload, have been looking for it for a long time.
archivian i'm glad you enjoyed it! the problem isn't necessarily the fact that windows 7 or something like that is new, i believe, it's just that this game is 16-bit and windows dropped support for 16-bit stuff in the 64-bit operating systems. so, don't quote me on this, but if you had windows 7 32-bit, this probably has a high chance of running on that. buttttt the caveat to that is why would you have windows 7 32-bit lol. either way, i know it works on XP, so it's best to just use that instead of potentially spending a lot of money on 7 32-bit.
@@MrMoorkey awesome! yeah it seems variable pitch props are better for gas or diesel type engines that have an optimal power or fuel consumption throttle position. so the engine can always spin at the same speed but the ship can go fast or slow - nuke boats don't have that kind of thing like gas engines
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?!!?!!?!!?!!!?!!!?!!! This is literally one of my favorite books of all time, I read this shit in 4th grade in the pre 9/11 times. WTF theres a game?????
I watched this video back when I was younger… now I’m an actual submariner and understand everything the game is trying to portray… too bad the CIA killed Tom Clancy for knowing too much.
Will be glad to watch that too, I have my copy right by me still, speaking of which, how can one find this game here? I had all the Jane's/Sonalysts games introduced to me by my dad back then, but I wasn't aware of this.

It has its moments but it definitely is one of his lesser works. On the topic of Clancy books you have a favorite one? Mine would have to be the "Hunt for Red October".
yeah sorry about that, i talked really quickly when I first started. You will need a 32-bit version of an operating system to run this game. I used Windows XP installed in a virtual machine to play it.
Hey, was good seeing this game again. I've just got it to work on Virtual Box, and installed the file. I can't find a file with a list of what keys do what. I don't suppose you have the list of keys for the controls ? Thanks
@@FPSchazly not on google.. The back up plan is to use the practice area and test each key and make a note of what it does !! Thanks for getting back to me
Any time! I'm trying to remember keys but I think im just going to inadvertently list the keys for the 2017 submarine game Cold Waters haha (you should check it out if you havent, it's like a modern SSN)
Funny how that game was turned down when it came out and how it was turned down again by the Command modern air naval operations crew. To have this game working flawlessly play it from a DOS BOX
me too! i dont know what it would be like to reread it after reading the rest of clancy's stuff, though. ssn has a ton of a potential to be a great clancy book, but its written like a bunch of scenarios slapped together. i havent read it in forever, but the reviews ive read make it out to be really not that enjoyable of a read, at least compared to other clancy books. also, ssn wasn't even written by tom clancy, i don't think.
in terms of game play, yeah sure. cold waters has a South CHina Sea SSN-like scenario now. but i feel the ramifications of Cold Water's europe war (Red Storm Rising) could be much more severe. but China does have nukes. beside the nukes, at the times of both hypothetical conflicts, the US was much more advanced than the Chinese and not as advanced over the Soviets.
It's funny because it's the same thing that is happening in the book Code SSN from Tom Clancy. At the beginning of the mission the Cheyenne is ahead for Pearl Harbor to get some more weapons because in time of peace submarines are running with a minimum amount of weapons. During the transit near the west coast of the USA they spot a Chinese Han sub which is pinging and attack them. They then blew up the Han using a Mark 48 ADCAP.
I don't know but I also have the audio book of it.It's really awesome. I just searched online but cannot find it. It's rare. If you want give me your email and I'll be glad to send you. It's 4 small .rar files.
***** Yeah I have the book. It's very good but what I like in the audio book is all the background sounds and the music. We can hear the crew members talking while the narrator is telling the story. If you change your mind just tell me. I don't think we can find it in store anymore. For the book I had to ask the store to order it for me. Hunt for the Red OCTBR is really amazing also. It's funny cuz the Russian crew are ridiculously patriotic to the communist regime. I remember a part where someone is saying: The communist regime is pretending to pay us so we pretend to work lol.
+Dharhan OneNineFive i installed this on a windows XP virtual machine using oracle virtualbox, that's probably your best bet. i have a how-to guide on how to set it up if you search my channel for virtualbox
once you have the virtual machine set up, it's just installing games to it at that point. sub command you should be able to install on windows 10 using the dangerous waters windows 10 fix. not sure if anyone has tried that but it would be easier to try first.
