I think in the Penguin Popular Classic Jane is probably trying to mend her wedding veil that Bertha shredded. Love Claudia's takes on cover art.

Just the George Richmond portrait of Charlotte Bronte herself would be perfect. Most of these covers aren't nearly gloomy enough.

Ah I think author portraits on the cover are a bit of a cop out, though that one is a beautiful drawing.

Jane Eyee is my favourite novel, and Fritz Eichenberg cover is my favourite. I would love to own a copy, but I think it’s quite rare and rather expensive. I just loved this video, Claudia!

As soon as I saw it, I had a little look around the online shops as well, but it's something like 300€ for an original copy, so sadly not something I'll ever own

That’s my edition! The blue German one. It was not a cover buy for sure. I wanted Jane Eyre and that’s the one that was available.

I LOVE these cover videos ❤. What about one for "Dracula"? We need it, LOL! Wordsworth Classics's contribution is hilariously awful as always. The same for George Eliot's novels. 😂 Wordsworth Classics, we love you.

I have the Norton critical edition featuring a portrait from 1866 depicting what's basically a sad Jane and a 1963 Airmont edition which depicts Jane in a splendid hooded cloak with Rochester on horse in the background. Speaking of Wordsworth classics have you seen The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame cover?😂

@@SpinstersLibrary Astonishingly, it's not! It is absolutely the same concept, though: a young sultry slightly Spanish-looking Dorian next to his portrait. There's even a bit of his top hat sticking out of the frame, just like that painting! Tragically, it didn't make an appearance in your video

An interesting, fun video. In my opinion, the 1970s were the absolute nadir of ugly photographed paperback covers - in every genre! So I don't disdain the generic oil painting cover art as much as you. I was pleased to see the Deans & Sons cover. I collected those as a child in the 1970s - they were about 15p each for a hardback book, which was good value then. Some were abridged, and some were not. That's how I discovered Pride and Prejudice and even Barchester Towers! I'm always pleased to see them pop up, and I'm even a wee bit tempted to start collecting them. My mum threw mine out - she took the view that "paper causes fleas"
@SpinstersLibrary
@SpinstersLibrary 7 месяцев назад
Oh no, that's a shame! I think my mum gave away at least some of my childhood books as well over the years. Maybe you should see how hard it is to get hold of these Deans & Sons editions.

The Arabic one seems to show the man on top as Mason perhaps, Bertha's brother. The bottom man, lord knows? The Greek one gave me a laugh...she looks 10+ years married 🤣🤣 she's had enough of his sh*t 21:32 my favourite ❤

Thank you for not raving about the Chiltern edition. I feel like I’m the only one who thinks the Chiltern editions are aweful and tacky (because of the golden edges). I also think the Marjolein Bastion (or something like that) editions have nothing to do with the story.

Hello - random question, do you still have tinnitus and how do you cope with reading? Its been getting me down recently :(
@SpinstersLibrary
@SpinstersLibrary 6 месяцев назад
I do still have tinnitus, though I only really notice it when there's no other noises around. I've not found it distracting when reading, because there's always some background noise (I live in an old house in the countryside, so if it isn't the neighbours' chickens, it's the pipes creaking or something along those lines). It sounds like your tinnitus is a lot more severe, maybe there are strategies that make it easier to ignore or reduce the impact it has?
