That's the original voice actress for Athena from the first two games. They replaced her in God of War 3, but brought her back for this little cameo. It shows a great level of respect from Santa Monica that they didn't hire just anyone to do those lines. That whole sequence is made for the fans, and having the original voice actress reprise her role as Athena is something the developers knew the fans would highly appreciate.
CasualShinji "Shows a great level of respect from Santa Monica that they didn't hire just anyone to do those lines." T.C. Carson: "...uh-huh, right...meanwhile, I'm 'too short'".
poobumbutt No offense to T.C. Carson, but I don't think he could've pulled off a lot of these scenes, short or not. This is also just a very different Kratos. It's not like they booted Carson for the sake of getting a big name actor *cough* Hideo Kojima *cough*, they just wanted someone who could really act and who'd also be a closer physical embodiment of the character. And heck, Carson has like six GoW games under his belt already. Point being, they made the change for the sake of the game, and it was the right one.
In many ways, Carson represents pure anger and violent emotion. Judge represents tired and weary years of anger. So I don't think Carson could have really worked for this version of Kratos.
CasualShinji I disagree that an actor - any actor - should be shrugged off of the opportunity to play their legacy character because they "probably couldn't pull it off this time". However, I respect the honesty of the opinion. It's tiring to hear "shut up, Chris Judge is awesome" (which I'm not disputing) again and again, so a logical argument is refreshing. Now, for all I know, maybe Carson did an audition for this GoW and was rejected based on his performance. I don't know. But on its face, the story of "he was too short for motion capture" leaves a bad taste in my mouth. But then, I also get why both a business which employs voice actors and TC Carson himself wouldn't want the reason to be "dude couldn't be emotional to save his life". I don't know, its a weird situation. But deciding to ditch an actor because your story "grew up" but you're going to continue using the same character specifically because of his legacy in past games seems VERY much to me like the Hayter-Sutherland replacement thing. Kojima says exactly this in interviews about Kiefer. There's still the mixed messaging around "why?" There's still the "real actor" argument, either from Kojima himself in MGS or from the public in GoW's case. There's still the "surprise, you're replaced!" aspect from the actor's perspective - I wonder if Santa Monica bought him lunch at least, like Hayter...? The only difference seems to be the rather insulting assumption that Carson "probably" couldn't act well enough. Again, unless there was an audition I don't know about.
poobumbutt The difference between this and Hayter I think is that Hayter was always kinda treated like shit by Konami and Kojima. The dude had to addition for every new installment despite being the one to give the character his iconic voice. Kojima apparently tried to get Kurt Russel instead of Hayter for MGS3, but eventually "settled" for Hayter. You could definitely tell him getting Sutherland was just to show off star power, similar to what he's doing now with Death Stranding. That's not the impression I'm getting from God of War. T.C. Carson is still the iconic Kratos voice, but the dude isn't that versatile a voice actor, or mo-cap performer judging from GoW: Ascension. It worked well for the previous Kratos, because that character was rather one-note and usually screaming. But here they obviously wanted to go for something different. Apparently it was also a case of chemistry with the actor they got to play Atreus, who was cast before Kratos and based off of the chemestry between him and Christopher Judge they decided to pick him for Kratos.
As this is your first exposure to the God of War franchise, Kratos seeing Athena is a pretty big deal as she played a major role in the early games of the series which lead to the genocide of the entire Greek Gods as a whole. So you're seeing some rather important backstory information unfold. Also as a bonus from God of War I & II it felt good to hear Carole Ruggier reprise the role of Athena again. What's really chilling though about that scene of Athena's spirit talking to Kratos it really did remind us of the kind of man Kratos was back in the day. Wonderful video Kat.
Hey Kat! Idk if anyone has said this but Corey Barlog (game director) said that Kratos stays in rage mode until he picks Atreus up. Atreus is what calms him down.
ali dahab pretty sure that's not true, I remember kratos having a blood brother, but never a sister? Do you mean the time when kratos replaced ares as God of war?
Miscat, I'm so sad that you gave up on playing this series. You had some incredibly human and thoughtful reactions on the early episodes, to the point where even the makers of the game tweeted about it. This game has an amazing story that is worth experiencing, not just casually watching with what feels like 'fake enthusiasm' when you don't play it yourself. I understand if the game is too difficult or too much work, but if you reconsider.. your playthrough and your real and personal reactions to the rest of the game would make this series something that would really stand out in this genre.
Badaboop Badabeep bro, spoilers. I mean you I get it, the game is great and it's fun to talk about end game plot points, but control yourself man. Wait until she is done with the story
@@futabafanclub he did forgive himself, but it doesn't mean he'll forget what he did, his hands shaking before he puts on the chains show that the memories will always haunt him
Seeing how far Kratos has grown as a loving father and husband breaks my heart to have to see him return to his old ways. But this is like his redemption, he isn't returning to his ways because of selfishness, he's doing it to save his son, someone he loves and will do whatever it takes to protect him. This is such a powerful scene that represents so, so much. What did you guys think of it? - Kat
While I agree having Kratos going back to his old ways for the sake of his son is powerful, it's worth remembering that Kratos was bound by a prophecy. He was destined to live a life of torment until he finally killed the Greek Gods. That's why the final game had Pandora talk to Kratos about hope. This is the result of that hope. Kratos is no longer bound by prophecy to kill people or gods, he doesn't need to be a monster anymore. And it's important to remember that Kratos never truly learned about his own prophecy. But Zeus did, and in Zeus's paranoia, he caused his own demise. Kratos is an anti-hero, Zeus was the villan
the thing is, Kratos didn't just kill people, he literally caused the end of the world by killing all of the Greek pantheon, murdered entire nations and betrayed countless people. Kratos is correct when he calls himself a monster, there is no redemption for him, the best he can do is teach his son not to become him and try not to cause as much damage to this relm.
MiscatSquad This video should help a bit with kratos backstory. Hope it does, great video as well👍 Watch "God Of War - The Story Behind Kratos - (Greek Mythology)" on RU-vid ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hQw2_jssAmk.html
The very instrument that bound Kratos to slavery of Ares the very instrument that caused him to take the life of his first wife his first child Coliapie and his own mother and father. The weapons that brought so much death will now carve a path to save the life of his son Atreus. Just WOW THAT'S POWERFUL.
TheMonsterTrio Clearly you haven't played the game, there are a lot of important dialogue that builds the lore and world of the game, watching cutscenes won't cover that there are a lot of layers to this game for example ( SPOILERS: you only know that freya was the queen Valkyrie by beating the queen and not through the story, mimir also mentions that freya came to visit him while kratos and Atreus were spreading the ashes to ask where odin hid her wings which will surely impact the next game ) so yeah i rest my case.
Jack johnson totally agree, to see the hard work the developers put in to this game and she’s just decided not to play it through to the end. It’s a shame really...
I don't understand why she isn't playing because the experience is so much better when playing it yourself especially a very pivotal part of the story like this one but oh well still a great video at least
Gabriel Betancourt well if she was playing the game she would more than likely miss a peice if the story cause she will be focused on Commentary and playing as so many people have done with games like this one its hard to kinda put in game play and commentary cause you kinda have to focus on the story also she actually is playing the game on twitch so yeah this is just to get through the story
@@Jorozco3708 no dude that's just lazy literally everyone else can listen and play at the same time either way she still talks almost the same amount over her reaction as she does when playing
20:07 Here's the lyrics Útlægr Guð (Exiled God) Smán föður (Father's shame) Von móður (Mother's hope) Und svíður (Wounds remain) Ger fortíð upp (Confront the past)
@@Darkmaknetar no. The director confirmed that its the world reacting to Atreus being on his death bed. Atreus is Loki. A big figure in norse mithology. His death would create a time paradox with major events surrounding him not happening. The entire prophecy of Ragnarök and what happens during it, even the victor. Without Loki there won't be Fenrir, Jormungandr, Hel, Sleipnir, Skol and Haati.
I'm so glad you appreciated the story elements of such an impactful scene. With the metaphorical storm representing the rage in Kratos mind as he sits in the boat. Such a brilliant element of story telling through game design. This scene should be taught in game colleges
Hey Kat, I just saw your update video and then came back here--can I add my 2 cents? Simply put, gameplay itself is essential to the experience, so I worry that you won't get the full experience by watching and reacting to cutscenes alone. You could, perhaps, play only the story bits on the videos you upload here and do the other open-world stuff off camera. Well, this is just my opinion, because I truly want you to connect with the characters and be utterly immersed--something that can only happen with a game--instead of essentially watching a 'movie'. :)
princessthyemis She actually is Playing the Game just not for these videos cause its hard to commentate and play at the same time cause your mind is focusing on one thing at a time so actually this way everyone that is watching is getting a better experience in terms of commentary
John Orozco don’t try to defend it mate. deny it all you want but there is nothing intriguing about watching someone react to video game cutscenes. And no she most likely hasn’t played the game at this point or else she’s faking her reactions or is spoiling the plot as she continues watching these vids.
bandito_x 9 Considering Theres Reactors with millions of Subscribers there is something intresting about it considering theres an audience for and when watching a play through what most people want is to see their reaction to the game and the reason shes doing this is so she can focus on the story and take in all the story and then on twitch she plays through the part she just watch so she can Get a feel for the game and also its story it may not be your cup of tea but theres a point to it im not defending it or going against im explaining why shes doing it
I was a bit surprised to see the change in format. I came across your channel a few days ago and I've been following this series ever since. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I think if this was what you were most comfortable with, it's worth the change to make sure you experience the story in some fashion. Sure, little details might get missed, but whatever you're using for a reference video was cut together very well. I like the transitions, and it keeps in enough of the random banter to get a feel for the time frame between the shots. In all honesty, I found myself skipping some of the gameplay in earlier episodes since I was mainly in it to see your reactions to the plot anyway. I've always felt it was a shame that so many good stories are locked away in a medium that a lot of people never take the time to experience, and I've thought of doing something like this for my dad so I could share some of my experiences with him. Glad you did you, and I can't wait to get to the finale. ^_^
For me is awesome that i have nv gave a dang about game reaction till i found this girl. She literally makes any one feel everything about the game!! This is a RU-vidr i love to follow!
Well Kat He killd woman and children too the burden he wears is really heavy he basically did genocide. He will probably never fogive himself complety he tries his best.
I’ve played this game all the way through twice now and watched countless youtubers reactions but that scene with Athena on the boat gives me chills every single time.
Vampire Matter He may not have INTENDED to do good things with them, but he actually inadvertently DID. He killed most of the Greek Pantheon, thereby giving power to the Mortals. He killed the Sisters of Fate, which in turn gave everyone free will. And he killed himself at the end of God Of War 3, thus releasing the power of Hope from being trapped inside him and giving it to the humans when they needed it most.
He didn't have a choice in the matter. The gods put a curse on the blades. Every time Kratos would try to get rid of them they would get back to him. He threw them from a mountain, a strong wind brought them back at his feet. He threw them in the sea but the sea rejected them, destroyed his boat, and when he recovered the blades were back.
Apparently Kratos had tried many times, up to 50 attempts trying to rid himself of the Blades of Chaos only for them to return back to him. From throwing them off a cliff to tossing the chains to the sea, he eventually gave up to store them in his house as a last ditch effort to conceal the blades. They have claimed more lives of every living thing from both Innocent to horrendous atrocities. Plus, Atreus and the Weather may have something to do with his heritage but nothing to dive into unless more information is given. Basically, whenever a Greek God dies, their aspect of nature fades with them in a violent manner.
The hype in the sequence( from the moment he says that he have to dig a past he swore not to get back to get those freaking glorious blades of chaos and hit those hel walkers) was something I have never experienced in a video game till date. Only the people who played whole franchise can feel the true hype this whole scene has.
Some people think when you hear the horn blow that it was Modni challenging The World Serpent and he losses, and is why looks beat up and it wasn't Thor who did it. But who knows?
Is it me or i just don't see your last reaction on GOW (ep 15)? Btw i see lot of people complain about this react stuff, but i think it's so clever! I allways get so annoyed when streamers just miss some parts of the story or ignore it because of the chat :( But this is a really great idea, and i appreciate the effort that you put in to these just to make the Story more enjoyable for you and the fans, while streaming ! :) It's so awesome and i can't wait to see your streams of GOW, even though i'm not a big stream watcher myself :)
HiManツ Honestly, that's what makes single-player narrative driven games the worst games to live stream. It's inevitable that the streamer will miss some piece of the story while reading the chat, and then people in the chat will complain about them missing stuff - it's a vicious circle.
@@bretbret8293 Perhaps, but by watching an edited video instead of just playing the game, she actually is missing a huge chunk of gameplay, dialogue, and impact as opposed to losing the occasional string of dialogue every once in a while.
Philosophical question about punishment: Say Bob murdered someone and the next day woke up with overwhelming guilt. Then dedicated his life to helping others and saving lives. Should Bob still be punished?
7:42 wow i have never realized that the tower that he was talking about you can kinda see it , i guess because atreus is part giant he can’t see it but kratos can’t .
That awkward moment when you haven't played the other God of War games so you have no idea how hugely significant it is seeing Athena and using the Blades of Chaos. Maybe someone needs to play through the old games?
Ragnell GoW at leasr she knew what the Blades were or look like, including the meaning behind Kratos getting them back, unlike other people who's reactions are pretty bland
It's so cool seeing how far kratos will go for his son, and yet is afraid of the fact that he is a god since he himself is one and he hates gods, not meaning that he hates his son, but more of the fact that gods eventually get to greedy and egotistical with thier power, and he doesn't want that for his son at all. Also, that little line where kratos confirms that he will remain a monster but says "but I am your monster no longer" what does that tell you kat? Also, kat, I gotta ask. Out of all of the video game dads, from Joel to lee to kratos, who would be dad of the year?
True you may think this is a way to redeem himself tell that to kratos in his eyes he is beyond redemption wiping out the pantheon is one thing that can be redeemed but killing his own wife and child that's an unforgivable act an act that can never be redeemed and he knows it
He always was a loving father..... even when the death of his first wife and child was cut down by his own hands..... i dont understand how people don't see that
A “loving father” should not let his anger and rage manifest itself into mass slaughter and violence. Even his own daughter and first wife were afraid of his anger, but he was a younger demi-god then.
@@Kaikaifilu1994 ya he was a general of the spartan army and his wife and kid was safe, he fought the barbarians to the death and when he prayed to Aires and the god listened.... that was beginning of the man everyone feared but he was controlled by the god of war and that's what led to the ultimate destruction of Olympus, Aires forces him to kill his wife and child.... he loved them soo much he destroyed Olympus
Good to see a newcomer into the franchise that did her homework!! Most of newcomer's reactions I've seen are pretty emotionless or don't know what's happening. The buildup of the entire scene was perfect, up to the Blades' big reveal... Something that older fans were worried about but in the end they were releaved when this happened. Pd, if you will react to Kratos' past, I'd suggest you to react to the games' cutscenes and a bit from the gameplay... And also regarding GOW VR, it happened for a bit in GOW III
MiscatSquad in the second round it is not the same anymore , the reaction playing, was the most realistic, complete and satisfying for us. but you are so cool and really important for us , so doesn't matter what you wanna do, don't worried and do not press , we will follow you , Your reactions are the best for me.
Not going to lie..seeing kratos, one of the most hardcore characters make a weak sounding voice in desperation for his son punched me right in the feels .
play the game!!!! you're missing soo much dialogue with the boy and mimir!!!! but if you're playing the game on livestream then.. i guess its okayyyy >_
Yup GOW will be for livestreams only now. We want to get through the story first so we don't get distracted by the chat and so we can appreciate it as a cinematic experience for both the writing and the directing. The game will be played through as a livestream on Twitch so we can focus on more technical aspects and also so I can improve on the controls and take advice from the squad. - Kat
Yep! Whenever we play longer games we want to appreciate the story first so we don't miss anything at all during streams. It's aggravating when people get distracted by the chat so much so this way for streams we can just focus on having fun, while also appreciating the story from a different perspective! And THANK YOU SO MUUUUCH! *hugs* - Kat
*I hope Kat will see this.* I still think this is a big mistake. To not play and instead react to God Of War. Since is your first interaction with this game. Instead you still play The Walking Dead, Uncharted which are also great games but not as special as God Of War. You are missing lots of interactions and great dialogues for not going thru the game by yourself. Its still a long way till the end and from this point it will get even better. Maybe you can go back to ''Let's Play'' for this series so you and us, the viewers, will get the full experience of God Of War. I don't think im the only one who thinks like this. While is just my opinion i think others will agree with me and maybe you will do the right thing with this game. Please don't take it as an insult or something, it's just a constructive o.pinion, i don't i can call it criticism. You are special, i will tell you that, thats why you will grow really fast. Everybody loved so much you playing God Of War, including me and i think you need to get back on playing it because like i said before, its a even more special experience that you can't regret doing it. Much love from me!
Chris there were still haters that disliked her way of playing, for example: not having upgraded any of her stats: (health or rage), throwing the axe during bosses, not exploring, adquiring any habilities (parries or runic attacks included), to say she was (unbeknownst to her) doing a NUR... Haters gonna hate. I don't mind the change that much, since I already beat the game, so why watch someone else do what I just did already? At least that's how I see it... I respect her choice
She can still be emotionally affected by the game due to the story, characters, music, or any number of things she connects with. Actually playing a game will enhance the experience, but you can still get emotionally invested with directly playing it yourself. I just played a visual novel game where I got pretty sad at a dramatic moment even though I was only reading the text, just due to the writing and music. Plus, Katya is an emotional person and she really connects with the characters, even if she’s not actually playing
It seems like Kratos is frightened by the fact that he killed his father. Not Zeus, father. He afraid that Atreus gonna do this in his future, it's like a curse. Sorry for mistakes, I'm from Russia, but love your channel very much.
Kratos May have done bad but it’s not entirely his fault look up his entire backstory and you’ll understand that when it comes to kratos...revenge was truly the only way
You know all geeks TV incase u dnt know what's Goin on with that thunder n lightning.... It was like this in all nine realms... That was thors anger....

Yes God of War is more amazing , especially with NOLAN FREAKIN NORTH. The story of GOW is so awesome and I’m excited what happens next on the journey of Kratos and Atreus, but I hope Atreus will be okay. Coughing blood is not a good sign at all😕. Anyway I will have a lot of fun watching your videos 😊👊🏻
