it’s seriously too bad what she did. I’m italian and that symbol for my nation is illegal and it portate terrible memory. It’s a famous symbol she use it two times and if you bought a t-shirt you have to make sure what it symbolise. her excuses were not enough, idols get cancelled for very less. An idol if they say the n-word excuses are not enough for their ignorance but hers are ok? too many people died and suffered even how. In my school in two days i have to meet a man that survived the olocausto, if you don’t know the olocausto is the deportation of Jewish, homosexuals, politicians, criminals, and others in camps where they were treated horribly, and then killed/died. I have to forget what she did just because she said that she didn’t knew what she was wearing, y’all have to remember that idols are normal people that have political opinions, maybe that’s her. A lot of people, even now, consider themself nazi or fascist. Tzuyu had to take an apology video just because she show the flag of her country, chaeyoung did practically nothing. I’m sorry i’m not here to bully her, i’m not like this, i’m here because too many people forgot what happened because of nazi and fascism, and that was the symbol. Comparing Tzuyu to Chaeyoung is honestly so unfair. TZUYU having to apologize for unknowingly making a stance on an ongoing geopolitical issue ( which is still at the threat of war) by waving thr flag of her home country is very different from what Chaeyoung is going through. Considering she wore this in NYC, which has a huge Jewish population, and all the antisemitism happening in general, what she wore was in poor taste. I think it's very doubtful that Chaeyoung is antisemitic herself or was wearing the shirt with malicious intent. It's probably going a bit far for people to say she is a bigot. Chaeyoung has been praised for years for her edgier sense of style, getting tattoos, etc. Chaeyoung wore an edgy shirt because she likes having an edgy sense of style without understanding how harmful that symbol is. As someone who grew up in an Asian country, yes, we did learn about WW2 and it should be expected that we know what the symbol is. However, the perspective of the war was different and the cultural memory of the nazis actions is almost zero in those countries as opposed to imperial Japan. What we weren't taught is just how important it is and how much it affects people to this day. In a similar vein, when I transferred to an American high school we learned passing knowledge of Japan's actions in WW2 but we were in no way taught the extent to which their actions during the war are still very fresh in the cultural memory of countries like China and Korea today. This doesn't excuse Chaeyoung, but can serve as an explanation for why she did something dumb. Idols work very hard, yes, and their lives are probably very difficult. But events like this serve to remind us that many of them are still wealthy celebrities divorced from a lot of normal people and are prone to doing stupid rich girl shit like wearing an edgy shirt thinking it'd be cool.
@CharlotteMayJane
@CharlotteMayJane Год назад
Agreed!! I live in an Asian country aswell and we were also taught about the Wars but we never really went in detail about the Nazis or what their symbol or men looked like. We never really studied it with that much depth. We only studied the main events like the countries who were responsible for the Wars. Plus many idols sacrifice or freeze their studies to become a kpop idol at a young age which also might be the case but this is not directed towards chae or any other idols. But its quite common as idols have to live that hectic routine of training and managing their studies at the same time would be close to impossible so it makes alot more sense. I also agree about chae's style though , that's totally her style and it's pretty obvious she has that shirt cause it looks edgy. But I'm not defending her in any way, these are just some of the possibilities and I think some of the criticism is deserved (only so it teaches her a lesson to be more aware for the sake of herself and her fans).

@@CharlotteMayJane Education of one’s self it just as important as an academic education. Even if you weren’t really taught the explicit details of war in school, surely you posses the basic media literacy/ critical thinking skills to understand that Nazi’s were bad and their actions were deplorable. Like surely you have the skills to comprehend why a hate group is inherently a bad thing? Plus, there is SO much media regarding WW2. Movies, tv shows, books etc like surely at some point in your life you have stumbled across WW2 related media? Every year at the Oscar’s there’s at least one film regarding the war, like it’s everywhere. Self education is perfectly accessible and as a human being on this earth there is no excuse for being ignorant of something that affected the entire world and still does to this day, sorry. 🤷🏼‍♀️
@unmessable12
@unmessable12 Год назад
@@MB-ic3ou yeah see this is why what I said isn’t an excuse but just a possible explanation. Chaeyoung is 23 years old and an internationally promoting idol. There’s a responsibility inherent there. That said, I don’t think we should be pointing to movies and media as a reason why Chaeyoung should have an understanding of how important the nazis are to cultural memory. Dramas and movies about ww2 are extremely common in China and Korea. How many have you seen? More than that how many has the average American who doesn’t watch kdramas seen? The average westerner has no idea how much the crimes of imperial Japanese are still embedded in Koreas cultural memory despite all this media about it. And movies and TV don’t really paint an accurate picture either. It’s also been pretty well documented that a lot of media about ww2 has a concerning tendency to portray the nazis as evil badasses with strong organization and cool shiny uniforms even in films where they’re the bad guys. Our media about the nazis is often tainted by the Nazis own propaganda. Movies and TV about the war does not universally capture the evil of the reich and how it affects people today.
@MB-ic3ou
@MB-ic3ou Год назад
@@unmessable12 That’s not my point. My argument is that there is copious amounts of WW2 related media, and as you’re suggesting, there is plenty of WW2 media in Easy Asia. Hence, there is no excuse to be ignorant of it. I read the “Boy in stripped pyjamas” when I was in primary school ffs. It is a major world event that is taught to everyone no matter where you grow up. Critical thinking and media literacy skills are where you develop an understanding of the media you’re consuming and the knowledge you are taught. So even if the media is portraying the Nazi’s as “badass” (which i’m sorry but what WW2 media has ever done that bff) surely your media literacy skills make you go “well they’re murdering all these people and are a symbol of discrimination”. And yes you are making excuses for her bc you’re suggesting that just bc she grew up with a Korean education (where WW2 was taught in school btw), this somehow explains her ignorance and stupidity. Sometimes people are just dumb and ignorant of the world around them, and that’s ok!
@unmessable12
@unmessable12 Год назад
@@MB-ic3ou you seem to think that all WW2 related media is equal when that’s not true. As I said before, there is copious amounts of ww2 media in Korea but very few if any of them primarily concern Nazi germany. I’m a similar sense, very little of the ww2 related media in the west centers the crimes of imperial Japan. I can speak from very personal experience that the average American is pretty ignorant of imperial japans crimes during ww2 and I was just explaining that the reverse is true in Korea. Chaeyoung and most Koreans do have a passing knowledge of Nazi Germany, but their cultural memories of ww2 are very different from yours. They were likely not reading the boy in the striped pajamas. And if you don’t see how the Nazis image has been inaccurately represented by media the best example I’d give you is that shown in say, Inglorious Basterds. Hans Landa in that film is evil, diabolical, and clearly shown to be a bad person. Yet he is also charming, cool, deadly, and fondly remembered as one of the best parts of the film. This is not a problem of media literacy because how a film presents their antagonists matters. I’m not stating my opinion. This is how the film is remembered. Despite Nazis universally being portrayed as evil, our media has undeniably taken influence from Nazi propaganda. Deadly, well organized, and scary is how they wanted to be seen. Regarding Chaeyoung, I was merely pointing out that just watching media about ww2 does not paint an accurate picture of its cultural memory in the west. And as for your statement that I’m making excuses for Chaeyoung: there’s a pretty fine line between justifying someone’s actions and seeking to understand them in my book. I know that’s pretty rare on the modern internet but that’s just how I see things. My view as I stated pretty clearly is that Chaeyoung did a stupid thing because she is a rich girl out of touch with common culture, and likely thought herself above it. That’s a lot harsher than I think her fans are willing to be. I don’t think that’s an excuse, but the distinction between that and the other accusations being thrown around is important which is why I shared my thoughts on it.

some things to consider about the chaeyoung scandal (from a Korean’s perspective) 1. yes, she SHOULD have known. anyone and esp a celebrity w/ huge impact is responsible for knowing what that symbol stands for. she was fucking ignorant. 2. that doesn’t mean she “knew” and is a n@zi supporter because there’s a genuine possibility that she might not have known. is it ignorant? yes. very. but that’s different from being intentionally n@zi yet people are claiming she knew and intentionally did it. If she knew then why would she delete right away/apologize/& risk her & her group’s career in the west? And she mentions that she doesn’t recognize the “tilted” swastika because the non-tilted one all over Korea is a Buddhist swastika and they look similar so if people don’t pay attention and are careless, unfortunately they can get confused. still her fault for being careless though. 3. ppl think it’s “not possible” for any human being to not know the Nazi symbol while plenty in the west do not know about the rising red flag which is “associated with Japan's wartime atrocities, and is comparable to the Nazi swastika” & use it for aesthetics 4. people say “it’s rare to find the tshirt so she went out of her way to find it” LOL there’s 300m copies of it in Japan where twice often goes to. 5. people tying this to the q-anon shirt are idiotic. 1. people in sk don’t know wtf qanon is? it’s a maga cult in the states but sk has its own political & cult problems to worry about 2. People in the west don’t know about taegeuki crowd which is Korea’s equivalent of qanon so how would Koreans know qanon??? 2. even some of my friends in America don’t know about the sign. 3. yet ppl this use as “proof”she’s a white supremacist neonazi alt-right member 6. focus on holding her accountable for not knowing instead of claiming She definitely knew about both the nazi symbol and q-anon. You aren’t mind readers. I bet a lot of you on stan twt didn’t know qanon or “we go all” tshirt until this issue.

I hate Nazis, fascists, and conspiracy theories more than anything in the world. I spend an unhealthy amount of time battling them. I have an anti-Nazi song on my channel. I get called a "sheep" regularly. But that said, I've been around long enough to think before jumping to conclusions. I'm inclined to give Chaeyoung the benefit of the doubt and accept her apology at face value. This debacle says more about how commonplace these symbols are than it says anything about Chaeyoung specifically. In the west we automatically associate the swastika with the Nazis because that's the only context we regularly see it in. That's simply not the same in the east. The swastika is a Buddhist symbol and is seen frequently. With that context, the "tilted swastika" explanation is perfectly reasonable. Regardless of her education on World War II, she probably doesn’t have the same automatic association that we have with the swastika in the west. It's a Sid Vicious shirt. It's far more likely that she associated the shirt with a punk aesthetic. For all I know, she might actually be familiar with the Sex Pistols. As far as the Q shirt goes, that's on the stylist, and while the Trump crazies are known all over, how well known is QAnon specifically outside of the west? If she starts talking about "globalists" or "bankers" or "deloused clothing" or "wooden doors" or "cultural Marxism" or a "fourth reich" or the Rothschilds and George Soros or starts posting the numbers 14 and 88 everywhere, I'll be worried. I study these fascist pieces of shit and I know their dogwhistles, which are far more common and and alarming than outright displays of Nazi insignia. As for now, there are too many actual neo-Nazis and QAnon believers for me to want to waste time and energy on what was in all likelihood an unfortunate mistake.

Second swatika is a Hindu symbol but it has a visual difference with hakenkreuz (the one chaeyoung wore, hakenkreuz is tilted but swastika is placed horizontally and in red colour) Third swastika is commonly used in Hinduism, Buddhism maybe Jainism too(sister faiths of Hinduism) so seeing swastika is common on temples and monasteries, don't think we are advocating hakenkreuz by it. Stylist should know better when buying merch having swastika on a tshirt will land you in hot soup too as it may offend too and hakenkreuz was too horrible to land on a dress wore by idol. If people expect her to educate herself about the swastika symbol, then would it be fair if they also educate themselves about the swastika symbol? The swastika symbol did not originated from the Nazi. It has been used by Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism for thousand of years and it is a symbol divinity and spirituality. And this fact is widely known and the symbol is widely used in many Hindu and Buddhist temples in Asia. Furthermore, if anyone say that the Nazi ruined the swastika symbol, then explain to me when the KKK used the cross symbol of Christianity to commit despicable acts, why didnt people associate the cross symbol or criticized people for using it as negatively as the swastika symbol? Is it just because that Westerners dont even bother to learn or care about other cultures but their own?

It's no wonder that prepubescent fans are such enablers when it comes to stuff like this. Even if we're talking about atrocities, they all lose interest when things become "political" (ironically, everything is political). They'd rather use their energy and time to hyperfocus in things that they understand in their limited worldview; the way idols dress, the way they physically look, their dating life, the way they eat, policing if they act "cringy" or not, etc. I'm not trying to be demeaning towards those children. In fact, we know they're capable of understanding those things and genuinely care. But the way society and media is built, history and politics have never been a priority. After all, the lack of education, or more specifically, teaching them to not to care about certain topics, is a useful weapon to keep the status quo. The world is not like the book "1984", where information is constantly restricted and censored. It's more like "Brand New World", where information is readily available but no one cares. And personally in the American school systems I did not learn about the rising sun symbol. I went to an IB high school that had AP and college level classes. The one time we ever learned about the Japanese occupation in Asia was in history class where it was like two slides long, and it was just that they were pretty horrifying, but I do not recall learning the flag at all. On the other hand, I believe if they want to promote in other countries where they have a lot of fans, it is important especially for the company to START LEARNING THEIR HISTORIES NOW IF THEY HADNT ALREADY YET FOR SOME REASON so they can at least prevent basic mistakes such as these. Companies should have the resources to educate their idols about the most basic shit or at least control them enough where they don't lose fans and therefore money

Here some story: Swastika wasn't invented by Hitler, in some religion (I think it's in Hinduism but I'm not 100% sure) the swastika symbolises lightning bolts, representing the thunder god and the king of the gods or Zeus in the ancient Greek religion, Jupiter in the ancient Roman religion, and Thor in the ancient Germanic religion.During WWI it was a symbol of auspiciousness and good luck for most of the Western world. It became a 'evil' sign only after Hitler. She could wore it for all the reason that iìI said before. Like some building of the start of 19th have Swastika but that doesn't mean they are Nazi. But even if she were Nazist, we all talk about how we all should be free of saying our own idea and then when someone actually do (it's not the case of Chaeyoung) they get hate. Now I don't support Nazism, I don't like it but that doesn't mean nobody can like it. The reality that we like the possibility of saying our idea only when it's our OWN PERSONAL idea and not when it's different.

This is so disappointing but it made me realize something I’m not shocked she didn’t know the symbol. History is taught different in many countries usually based around what events played a big role in the country being taught (or sometimes what history doesn’t make the country look bad) for example you ask most Americans about the raising sun flag and I’m going to be honest as a person who is in highschool now they won’t know what it means or represents I have the privilege to take an ap history class and also in the IB program so we purposefully go in depth with that topic but a low minority take ap and or IB classes in most schools. But looking at the standard ciriculum in America (I live in Florida so I’m going based off of that lol) you will only be taught about the holocaust Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima and Nagasaki and that’s it. This is also Florida where history is being censored constantly but i seriously doubt Florida is the only state like this. In a lot of other countries specifically the east the holocaust is taught like how americans are taught about slavery and or the Korean War a nice paragraph and maybe a page if you are lucky. This just made me realized how biased history is taught in almost everywhere and I really hope chae takes this lesson to learn more about the holocaust and other tragic important events in history I’m happy if people are able to read through this

Obviously a history book is different than clothes but it might be confusing for a person born in a asian country because its obviously OK to show the nazi symbol in many different places (history book covers, educational websites, wikipedia, movies, films) so they think its not totally taboo. I guess it could just be common sense but its not drilled to your head like it is if you grow up in a western country. Also ppl are acting like she just wore a shirt with a giant swastika on it. Want to know what's sad? Now that Chaeyoung wore the shirt, people on Etsy and similar sites are now selling replicas of it... and they are selling out fast. That's taking being a fan to a whole new level and shows just how much influence idols can have on their fans. This is why when an idol does slip up, it isn't just something that can be brushed under the rug with a simple apology anymore. Part of being famous is understanding that you do have influence over other people whether you like it or want it or not. Not anymore when K-Pop is having such a big cultural relevance. And, yes, the authentic version of this shirt is incredibly rare and does cost upwards of $500 for an authentic one, which I assume hers is because the authentic/original one is cropped.. newer versions tend to replace the swastika with a heart and are printed on a full size shirt. The shirt is absolutely something you have to search for. It could just be Chaeyoung likes the Sex Pistols and didn't understand the relevance of the rest of the shirt, but this really doesn't seem like something the stylist did (if it was the stylist, JYP would have said so since it would take the heat off Chaeyoung herself) and it's verrrryyy unlikely for it to be a total coincidence. But it's up to every K-Pop fan and consumer to make their own judgement call on it. I just think it's even more heartbreaking that people are buying replicas of this just because Chaeyoung wore it even though they know all now definitely know the significance of it now.

1. The swastika symbol has existed WAYY before h1tler hijacked it, and it’s called “hakenkreuz.” The fact that the terms are being used interchangeably is a problem. 2. You can’t say that there’s no excuse to being ignorant of the symbol and saying that everyone knows about it because I’m sure that there are countless people who don’t even know the symbol or even the event itself. It is not basic knowledge so don’t make it seem like it is. It’s completely possible that she doesn’t know the meaning behind the symbol. 3. If you say she deserves the backlash that she’s getting, does that also include people calling her a n@zi cuz if so then that is fked up. 4. Also, I’ve seen more onces holding her accountable than sweeping this issue under the rug. We have been vocal about how this was a stupid mistake that she has done but where we draw the line is when people call her all sorts of names and spread misinformation about the situation. Regarding the shirt? people have been saying that it is a very rare shirt so they’ve speculated that she intently digged up that shirt online or whatever but that’s a lie. One google search of the shirts name and there are a lot of results selling it, I can even buy one on etsy for about 20 bucks so no, she isn’t some psycho who wishes hate upon the jews by digging up that “rare” shirt and wear it on public to piss people off. She is simply an ignorant person who made a stupid mistake just like the normal human being. Overall, pretty bad take but I respect some effort made I guess.

Just cause everyone is crying, I hope she would double down and wear those clothes again and again. Yall really some sensitive people. "I'm really disappointed" hahaha you don't matter. You know the swastika has 2000+ years of history and is still used in countries with dharmic influence. Why should parts of other cultures be tarnished cause of what a western man did?

I mean I think she is quite irresponsible for the shirt incident because of how N@zis have a big part of WW2 and there’d many media about such as American war movies, video games etc about it, and honestly it’s so big of a deal a lot of people know about it even if the world history part in their country was brief. But Im not so sure if Chaeyoung had proper schooling in general, kpop trainees and idols tend to miss out on school and not attend it most of the time because of their busy schedules, so I assume Chaeyoung might’ve missed a good chunk or just did the bare minimum requirements considering how famous twice is, and the fact they go to a performing arts school that might’ve even used their daily idol activities as credits in a way

3:30 in the contrary the rising sun symbol (flag of imperial japanese army) actually got popular at some point in 2010s and was used for aesthetic, that was why koreans were enraged when they saw bella poarch having a tattoo of it which she claimed she didn't know was offensive as she didn't know the full history having lived in the other side of the world far longer than her time here in the philippines (which was another country affected by the japanese colonization, this time during ww2 so much more recent than the annexation of korea which started during the last years of the joseon dynasty).

The swastika is not exclusively a Nazi symbol. It is a Hindu tantric symbol in India and in Asia it is only tilted and considered Nazi in the West. The symbols history is thousands of years old and stolen by the Germans, it does not belong to Nazis who stole it. It is a Hindu symbol not a Nazi one. Ignorant people from the west need to grow the fuck up. Everything is not about you or your misuses of other people's ancient symbols. The Swastika is Indian not German. The swastika is used by Hindus and Buddhist for thousands of years, the Nazis do not own our culture just because they abused and misused it. The Nazis also used Crosses and Eagles and no one flips out when those symbols are still in use. Grow the fuck up and stop trying to demonize our sacred symbols because the Nazis wrongfully stole and used it. Or start applying the same cancel culture rules to crosses and eagles symbols which they used just as much as the Hindu tantric swastika. it is not evil in India and Asia so she would not automatically associate it with white western Nazis. It is an East Indian symbol, not a Nazi one. The thieves do not get to own it. It is Indian and Asian for thousands of years and that outweighs any Nazi use of it for five years. Stop hating on an Asian lady for not knowing that a Asian and Indian symbol that is still in wide usage in India and Asia, is shunned by some ignorant fools in the west who do not know it's true history or meaning or origins. it is not a Nazi symbol at all. Grow up haters!

I seriously don't get the argument of "oh she didn't know what it meant" like how do you not know what the swastika is?! like yes I was taught of it in school because my country made us do that for half a freaking year- but world war 2 is a globally known thing.. like even before I had an entire history class for half a year about world war 2 and nazi Germany and everything like that I knew what the swastika was... I was not stupid or ignorant cause it's a world known thing.... For me I feel like Chaeyoung was ignorant... sure maybe she didn't see that it was on there but that just shows she didn't even think to look at the symbol that was on... cause like that symbol is pretty well known if you see it you know what it means I don't think there are any symbols that is allowed to be even remotely similar to it... now I am not someone who's family was not affected much by world war 2 cause I live in Sweden and I don't have any German roots as far as I know and I am not jewish... but it still irritated me that someone was so ignorant to put on the most obvious shirt of the swastika on it.. it wasn't even small like that thing was clear- and I am someone with poor eye vision so... yeah she should damn have seen it..

I feel like it's always easy to blame the team around her or her stylist, when she is indeed a grown adult that can consciously make decisions concerning her wardrobe in public. I just feel like as a celebrity it is even more important to be careful about things like this and especially think through wearing certain outfits in other countries, because you never know what could be offensive or not. So of course, I don't think she did it on purpose but it's on her for not being more aware and educated on this issue, especially since she wore this is in a jewish-owned restaurant. I'm from Austria and wearing a shirt like this in public would not only be highly offensive towards others but it could get you into serious trouble with the police, so I hope idols do better in the future and actually educate themselves before having to release half-assed apologies, sorry but also not sorry if that is harsh.
