I get that feeling. I used to be all in on digital when the Vita first came out, then I switched to physical. The space it takes can be overwhelming but it also helps me visualize how much crap I have and when I need to get rid of stuff. With digital stuff it's easy to lose track of how much money you spend. I also really like lending games to my friends, they usually can only afford a couple games so I like buying and lending them.

It’s definitely frustrating that a number of games technically aren’t actually fully on the cartridge/disk. It’s one of my biggest gripes with modern gaming. I’ve actually opening up a bit to digital myself as a result as well.

I don't usually have that problem mostly because I buy a lot older games, but I have been buying games digitally more often for different reasons and it sucks that newer games do those things because they know they can.

Physical all the way here! Just the idea that my Steam account could be locked or lost and wipe out hundreds or thousands of dollars of investment - not to mention save data - makes me sleep a little more uneasily at night. You raise interesting points about sales, updates, and generally give insight into why some folks might prefer digital. I suppose GOG is the best of both worlds though, since they do have 80%-90% like other digital stores if you are patient, but are also DRM-free so you can save the install files (for any version) so they're still safe if you ever lost the account. But at the end of the day I still feel most comfortable with physical. Not to mention the cool cover art, maps, and other stuff that especially older games have.

I am totally on-board with physical. I do buy digital when the price is right, or if there isn't a physical option. Over the last decade, I’ve been buying ONLY first party games that are a must have ie; Super Mario Odyssey, God of War, Spider-man, etc., Complete Editions like The Witcher 3, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Warhammer Chaos Slayer Edition, Mortal Kombat XL, etc., and Indie-retro type games that received a physical copy via companies like Limited Run Games.

arguing preferences is probably the most stupid thing someone could do. I love physical collecting but digital comes in handy for indie games that will never see the day of light physically because it costs too much for the developer. both come in handy and it's always great to have options to how you want to play your games. physical is better for preservation/overall room aesthetic , digital helps you save space if you lack it and you could get games for a cheaper price usually. at the end of the day everyone should just do whatever they want and not argue about it. opinions can't be wrong. Even for retro games im a die hard CD collector but also love flash carts, the idea of ODEs etc. #gameon

For me the issue with physical games is a collection can be easily destroyed quickly, accidents do happen. People like to think its uncommon, but disasters are more frequent than you might think. Some times you have no control of things, I had a collection as a kid and lost it all super fast(more than 100 games too, at the time the PS2 was the new console too). Digital you don't have to worry about it nearly as much, but with this DRM issue, definitely makes digital a tad frustrating. You don't really own the game when you purchase them digitally. Its almost more like a special way of borrowing the game. In my opinion both digital and physical have their draw backs. Also, I didn't really like the people out there making their points about why they were for digital or physical, when the Sony store was going to close. Because, whether digital or physical, the issue effected you regardless. Maybe not so much with some PS3 games, but apparently its an issue even for some PS3 physical or digital games. I'm not against digital, I'm on the side that I prefer digital, for the convenience. However, that is where the issue comes into play as well, its nice and readily there, but you technically don't own it. When people were saying jailbreaking or modding your console seems to be the only real feasible answer to keeping these games, it is kind of true. Also I've heard this subscription thing that people prefer. There is definitely pros and cons to subscriptions. They pick and choose the games you get to play. Sort of like Netflix there might be a show on there you like, but at any time they want to remove it they can and you can't really do anything about it. I know the show 'The Office' was on Netflix for a long time and I've heard its been recently removed, which is what happens to the stuff you want to see or play. Its sort of why some people are a tad critical of Nintendo's subscription service as well, they have a good range of NES and SNES games on there, but only what they choose to put on there. Granted Xbox with its Game Pass is pretty nice it isn't perfect either, but definitely one of the better options, I know not all Xbox games are available on that Pass, but I understand that can come across as nit picking. If there is a particular game that you wanted to play and its not up there then you either never get to play it or you are stuck waiting until they finally decide to put it up. However, in my opinion, much better option than Sony's PS Now in my opinion. Apparently PS Now, its only I think PS4 games that you don't have to worry about streaming the game you want to play, but that is the case with PS3, PS2, or PS1 games. Its always been an issue for me with the PS Now option. Its sort of how Sony did with the Playstation Classic thing, its the bare minimum. They put just enough to maybe keep some people interested, but its clear they could do way better. So far, I think Steam is the best when it comes to mostly digital stuff. From what I've heard even if a video game is delisted you are still able to download it even if you can no longer purchase that game. At least from what I've heard, Steam just sounds like the best when it comes to digital purchases.

This is exactly how I am with physical vs. digital now. I only get physical if it comes with something else tangible besides the game itself or if it's a franchise or niche genre that I'm really into. Your preferences and lifestyle changes a lot as you get older and other life circumstances change, and it often just means downsizing and being more picky about what physical stuff I buy (even outside of games) but it makes for a much more organized and manageable house/collection in the end.

While I do tend to lean more towards physical releases, I tend to go for a 70/30 mix of physical and digital, especially since a lot of games can have a huge price disparity due to 2021 basically being scalper hell. My biggest example off the top of my head being Drakengard 3, which is regularly $80+ for a physical copy... and $14.99 on PSN

For games that I love, I buy physical (usually collector’s edition) unless digital is the only option. For games that I don’t care, I don’t mind getting them digitally but I would buy the physical version if one is available at a good price. I just love looking at my game collection from time to time, especially the special/ collector’s edition games. Regardless of format, these days we don’t really “own” the games we bought. Developers can change the game with an update. Technically it’s not the same game when you paid for it and some people might not like what’s been changed. I think we have gone a full circle. In the beginning, there were no game consoles, just arcades where you insert a coin and rent the time to play the game. Then the game consoles came and we “owned” the games we bought. Now there are options to pay a monthly fee to play games that you do not “own”. That is not unlike the arcade of the old days. The only difference are you don’t have to go to the arcade anymore and you rent the games for much longer than the 5 to 20 minutes playing a game in arcade.

You nailed it on the head. 'Physical Media' really means something different these days. When you were buying cartridges back in the day, or even disc based games prior to true proliferation of internet and day one download patch mentality, a physical game meant something wholly different than having a digital game. Now, the distinction is less clear. For the most part, physical media is just a token to initiate the digital process. The only thing you gain from having physical media is you have something to put in your bookcase for display purposes.

I used to have a 10000$ games collection but i sold it 5 years ago, went digital, and i regret nothing. For retro gaming, emulation allow so much great options and undoubtedly enhance the whole gaming experience. And with services like Steam or the Microsoft Gamepass (the Netflix of gaming like i call it), it is so much more convenient this days than having a whole library taking space and dust. Maybe i can lose my games if the servers are gone, but it's the same if my house burn. Ngl, i sleep better since i went digital.

I have a lot of the same issues with physical games that you do except there are a couple of things that keep me from going digital only. Owning physical cartridges on switch can save so much memory compared to having the entire game downloaded from the market. I'll buy it physical in favor of having more space for games on my switch. I still buy games in the market though. Also I love to see cover art on the cases. Someone spent time to create it so I like to admire the art.

Digital is so underrated. I agree about switching games out all the time. I don't care if it's called lazy, it's annoying to do it. And people are always scared about digital games being removed. That is actually more rare than people think. People were crying about Scott Pilgrim being gone from the store for so long. I actually bought the game back then, and I was still able to recover it even though my PS3 broke and I had to buy another PS3. Had no issues. Physical media is taking up too much space, disc erosion is a thing. Surprise, both digital and physical have their ups and downs.

This was a interesting and great video! I would say I'm going through the same thing a little bit. Even now I prefer physical because I've always been a person to have something physical like games or books. Several years ago I only bought games digitally if they only existed digitally or if they were 100+ dollars physical, but now because there are more games I want I have to make sacrifices. Now I buy games digitally if it's a game that I'm not 100% it's going to be good and it's 50+ dollars physical like Grandia as an example or it's a series I want to play, but I don't even want to spend 25$ and would rather get it digitally on sale for 8$ because it's not good enough for me but I want to continue playing the series like monster hunter for example. Recently I bought etrian odyssey 4 digitally for 10$ because Ive wanted to try the series for years but most of the games are pricey around 50 to 80 dollars and I don't know if I'll like them, so I bought it digitally instead, which is painful but I save money in the long run for other things. Overall I still prefer buying physical, but one third of the games I get now are digital now which is fine. Great video overall, hope your enjoying your day!

The one time that physical purchasing was a detriment was, ironically, last year when Limited Run sold physical copies of Shantae (5) and the Seven Sirens. I paid Limited Run for it in May. It came out on PS4 at the end of May. I had to wait until October to actually get the game. And no, there's no bundle option to let you at least have the digital version to get through the wait. I would've been better off buying digital as I would've had the game in less than an hour, not 5 months later. I'd never bought from Limited Run before, so I didn't know that long waits to receive products were common even before COVID. I'm probably not ever buying from Limited Run again because of that.

I'm cool with digital PC games since I can easily back up my games on external drives. When it comes to consoles it's a bit more complicated. I can back up my digital Vita games to my PC thanks to Sony's content manager so at least for pricey physical games they make sense. With other consoles I'm not a big fan, after what Nintendo did to the Wii shop I don't trust these companies to continue to allow access to what I paid for. That being said going forward (9th gen onwards) I feel like I'm slowly being forced to move completely digital (with the exception of physical for Nintendo exclusives) simply due to how many games that came out in the latter half of the 8th gen are essentially broken without patches, which kinda defeats the purpose of owning a physical copy. :(

I think there's pros & cons for both. I think mainly for older games, especially from the 6th Generation of Consoles, PS2, Xbox & GameCube getting some of these games are still affordable. Also if said game isn't available through backwards compatibility or on a subscription, ala Gamepass, PS Plus ect. or even available with Gamefly, getting a physical game feels more necessary to me in that situation. Then you have digital games which really is what I mostly have on my PS4. Digital is definitely more convenient & you don't have to worry about potentially going to Gamestop or some other Game store to get your games. I will say though I think I prefer physical in case I want to sell or trade my games in for new game I want, or if a friend or my brother wants to borrow a game from me.

Used to be very much against digital until I realised there are exceptions that make digital a superior user experience. Not to mention some physical games do not hold their value because they’re tied to servers and communities (sequels kill older game communities usually) outside your control. Multiplayer or very frequently played games? Digital. Single player and doesn’t need tons of downloads to be playable? Physical or whatever is cheapest for you personally. That’s what I generally follow now. Im not factoring in Sony’s inbuilt CMOS bricking yet because holding out hope that they patch that out. No way they’ll be allowed to perma-brick 120 million consoles. If they don’t remove that, I’ll never trust them again.

I always tried going with physical media as much as I could, but I decided to go with PC gaming as my main focus moving forward, so I don't really have a choice anymore (outside of Switch and older games, obviously). All these small prints, games not being complete, until you update, and not giving you a manual or anything really has diminished my enjoyment of physical games though. I really find it unbelievable that there's PS4 and Switch games that already cost hundreds of dollars and people will willingly pay that just because you get a disc and a case. Personally, I'd go on GOG and buy The Pirate's Curse or something and burn my own disc before I'd ever think about paying the $500 or whatever dollars it's going for on Switch now. Then with the rest of the money I could grab it digitally for Switch too and buy like 15 other games. Physical is cool, but people are kinda crazy with it these days. I really just wanna play the games and enjoy myself. Not "collect them all" like it's fricking Megami Tensei or something :p

For me, if I really want a game and I can get it physically, I'll get it physically, if not, too bad, I'm getting it digital, problem is finding physical versions of Switch games in a 3rd world country where people only buy PlayStation and like the newest GTA, FIFA, and CoD can be extremely hard, cause the stores are gonna be getting like 6 copies of stuff that isn't FIFA, Mario, Zelda, or Crash Bandicoot, it's honestly just frustrating and depressing

I love my physical games collection I've acquired over the years but I also mostly game on PC (PC and the NSW) which has gone all digital for years now and it's never really bothered me on PC. Mainly because unlike consoles where the old is eventually abandoned for the new Steam for example is just constantly updated and there isn't a new version of Steam released every few years where the old is abandoned. On the Switch I buy physical if available. I like the way the Switch cases look and the Switch is the only modern console that provides the most authentic console experience imo. You buy physical game, you insert game and play, no install and no mandatory game fixing updates (for the most part). Out of the 76 physical Switch games I own the few updates that are available fix minor issues.

For me, it doesn't matter if it's physical or digital format, as long as it's accessible for me in terms of price and availability. Before buying a game, I always ask myself "will I play this game from start to finish?" If the answer is yes, then I will buy what's more accessible for me, whether it's physical or digital format. I like both digital and physical format. Yes, they have their own pros and cons. But in the end, what matters is whether I will play them, so I just don't waste money on them.

I also been buying most of my games digital since you get points on xbox then they give you a credit after a certain amount. Plus i share digital games so we buy games and share them its more convening. But most of the time we buy games in special rarely full price unless its a really really good game . Thanks again, and stay safe.

Makes perfect sense. If PlayStation Now would have a bigger library of games (seriously just get all your legacy titles on it and no one will complain about store closures) and would allow to actually download the games I would subscribe immediately. But as it is now I don't see any merit in it.

Lol my bf does the same thing all the time, he buys only very few physically games that he personally wants to collect and then buys they same exact game digitally just so he doesn't have to be swapping discs back and forth and putting them back in their cases and back in the shell where it belongs, so many steps you have to do just to play a different game. 😩 That's why there are so many people buying digital games right now because it is so inconvenient 😩. I buy more physical games than him but I need to save my money more thought. Love your video

That’s good reasoning about the situation of physical and digital games. PS3 will play discs just fine, but as far as we know PS4 won´t. Therefore, I don´t feel like buying any more PS4 disks (and I´m not getting PS5). In fact, I don´t feel like buying any more modern games at all. If I´m not sure I can play them 25 years from now it´s not worth it. I can play my 8-bit and 16-bit carts just fine. I might consider buying some games for the Switch but will focus fully on old systems from now on. As you say, subscription service could be a very good alternative to buying digital games. Since you don´t “own” digital games forever anyway you might as well just pay for the service.

Digital collections aren’t always reliable, especially when you’re not able to carry over your purchases to the newer console which a lot of people complained about when the PS4 came out. Especially when it came to past generation titles. People bought digital PS1/PS2/PS3 on their PS3, none of them could be re-downloaded onto the PS4, in fact some people had to rebuy their PS3 titles on the PS4 store despite the fact they've already purchased it on the PS3. Which is BS, if it’s already on my account I should not have to rebuy the game to play on my newer system.

Nothing last forever but one thing is a fact and that's physical media is always better then digital. Reason why is digital only means only one store front to buy from and that allows price control. I see a lot of PS4 games for way less brand new in physical format VS buying digital from the PS store. Going digital means giving away your rights of ownership and power as a consumer. Oh as for the whole PS4 Cmos battery BS, my PS4 has never been online till just 6 months ago and I've never once had a problem with playing any of my games. Also I never update a game or buy games that need online. I find that most western games tend to ship all busted up and have a bunch of day one patches.

Very good topic, Zuvi and I agree with all of your points. It's convenience and who wants all those game boxes lying around? Also like you said, they're not exactly putting whole games on the discs or carts and many you need internet to play anyway. Also I'm going to keep bugging you to play Risk of Rain 2, I think you'll like it based on what you said you've liked playing before 😃 have a great week!

I prefer physical games because I like looking at the pretty box art and displaying it haha So for years, physical games has always been my preference. However, once the pandemic started I really haven't had a choice! I tried buying my games in physical copies and they just weren't available. I bought a big SD card for my Switch and it was all downhill from there...most of the games I get now are digital. I'm always worried about it being unavailable someday, but I feel like it's okay to get digital games for the most part. I try to get the games I know I'm really going to love (like Shin Megami Tensei V) in physical so I'm not worried about it but also because I really want the collector's editions for them. ^^'

For me, my usual rule of thumb is "Physical or bust, unless digital is the ONLY option". A lot of Switch titles are digital exclusives (at least to my knowledge), but there are cases where physical copies exist yet are outside of my budget. One example is the English release of the original Fire Emblem, where the physical game was an expensive Collector's Edition package. In that case, as tempting as it was, I opted to go for the digital. However, at the end of the day, so long as I'm playing a game for enjoyment, I normally don't care if it's digital or physical. I just wanna play, lol!! Also, loving the new intro, Zuvi~!!

Digital cuz what happens when the disc drive stops working and needs to be fixed or repaired how u gonna play ur games? Digitally. Digital cuz u dont have to worry bout ur disc being lost or stolen or breaks or cant read the disc cuz it got alot of scratches so u have to buy a new one. U dont have to worry bout if the friend u lend the disc to will give it back to u. If u have a house fire or house flood all ur disc games might get ruined. U dont have to go from one walmart to the next or go to 5 best buys cuz they ran out or stopped carrying the game u wanted so u buy online like amazon or ebay and have to wait for it to arrive in the mail. If u sell ur ps5 disc console and games cuz u need the money and later on u decide to buy a new ps5 u dont to rebuy all those games again. With digital they are on ur account for u to reinstall or download. How many times u bought a disc console bundle and it came with a game like horizon, and notice the game wasnt a disc game but had a digital code for that game even though u bought a disc console

I have a decent amount of old disc games (no older than PS1) and I haven't experienced any disc rot in my collection. Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes on the Gamecube is one that gets blamed for disc rot a lot and I can say that my copy of it is in mint condition, and every other Gamecube game I own. I totally agree with not wanting to buy a game initially. I bought Dark Souls 2 on ps3 thinking that it was going to be as good as the trailers. Well, I do not think it is a bad game but I cannot recommend anyone who is a fan of the series get it without the DLC which makes it better by a huge margin. When I got ps4 I waited until I could buy both Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne with all the content so I didn't have to miss all the new stuff. One of the main reasons why I put off playing Nioh was the large amount of dlc it has, and also my controller has a bit of stick drift so I am not up for more hard games before I break my controller further. The real reason I don't want to try Nioh is that there is a 120 fps mode on ps5 and having to buy or download the game twice seems needlessly costly even if I can upgrade it for free.

Physical is your best bet and even if the game includes random DLC keeping the game physical you can still access 90% of its content. I used to be big on digital back in 2010 during the rise of the PSN but after seeing all the shit practices going on I practically went back again to grabbing physical media. Digital can go screw itself unless the game is free, 5 bucks or 10 bucks then I'll just grab it digitally but I'll always remain keeping a physical version for myself less wear on it if I get it digital.

Nothing lasts forever and a lot of people (like myself) honestly don't really replay games. That being said, I have a decent library of PS4, Vita, 3DS and old big box PC games. Learning about the PS4 discs being unplayable someday if Sony shuts off the servers or the CMOS can't be replaced to sync with it is really crappy. So with that being said, of all the platforms, PC probably stands the best chance for game preservation, what with emulation and the inherent continuity of PC hardware upgrades.

I'm currently really conflicted on getting Resident Evil 8 on Xbox for a physical copy, or on PC for better performance. CD keys sites have RE8 like $10+ off, so I might go for a PC copy and pick up an Xbox disc of RE8 in a couple years. Definitely getting Ys IX: Monstrum Nox on Switch as a physical copy, though. I adore my cartridges, far more than discs.

Most e-stores have crap refund policies. I'm not talking about Nintendo cause their refund policy is non-existent. If you want to try a game but no demo is available, you best bet is to try it for yourself with a physical copy and if you really don't like it, return it. (I'm not advocating returning all your games, which is definitely abusing the system. If you want to be less of a dick, get used copies. But it's still better to do thorough research before buying and return it only if it really didn't live up to your expectation.) And when you're done with a game and feel like you don't need it anymore, you can always sell it to gain some money back. Sure physical games don't last forever, but I don't think I'll be worrying about whether I'll be able to play this game in 30 years. Also, since value retainment is a big part of buying physical, I would usually only buy first-party or platform exclusive games. Even still some games can drastically lose value (what the hell Mario + Rabbids). These games however rarely goes on sale digitally, or at least in the case of Nintendo Switch, which is even more reason for going physical, since multiple sellers like Amazon sell theses physical games for cheaper. But it's also kinda weird how Amazon Japan always sell digital codes cheaper than their price on eShop...

Physical Games, make me happy, i am very unhappy with my digital games. Seeing/Touching/ your collection, gives me motivational/positive chemicals released in my head, that make me happy and feeling positive. Also just happy knowing, its their. Like honestly if games are $70+, it would be awesome if they gave us a digital copy. Make it a law games are not refundable back to retail only exchangeable if they defective, and you remove extra digital copy card from inside. Bult into the system safety, maybe instead, that you have to authenticate your digital copy with physical copy once every 2 weeks. So put disc in, you get the game for two weeks, and you can play it digitally. Make games not refundable.

Tl:dr I prefer physical but the country I live kinda invalidates that (South Africa) I'm aiming to buy a Nintendo Switch at the end of this year Many games I want are cheaper digitally and are either completely non-existent physically either in my country (meaning I'd have to pay for an overpriced import) or just doesn't have a physical version at all. However, I still naturally prefer physical games because of ownership and stuff like that and because of potential situations like this weird things with PS4s recently and also because I like physically having these covers and cases and artwork to look at and store and even borrow to anyone who happens to be my friend and has a Nintendo Switch

The dangerous thing here is, you don't own Digital games. You only own the rights to play them. In some cases you cant play a digital game you legally own. Say you bought a game online, you played it, some time later you wanted to clear space on your hard-drive, and you deleted it thinking you could just download it again later. Then you find out they took that game down, so you never owned that game to begin with despite paying money for it.

I prefer physical when I can get it. That being said I also know physical media is just about pointless these days. Even if you buy the physical version, it simply installs to the hdd same as your digit version, the game does not run or play off from the disc, the disc is simply used to unlock and gain access to the game that is installed on the hdd. Other than I guess nintendo switch those games might run off the cards. Also day 1 even if you buy the physical, most games require a digital update patch for the game to even run and they often get continued digital updates you must download for the game to run correctly and they will add new stuff that is not on the physical version you buy. The physical version will be also worthless in the future if your hardware dies. Even if you can find a replacement to your hardware that died, if at that time the servers are no longer up and running then the physical game will be worthless if you can't get those updates and patches. In 2021 physical media is pointless. Digital is great and I love it but your purchases are not guaranteed for the long term either. In genral modern gaming is not future proof or safe at all for anyone in it's current form. With there being 0 consumer protections in place for buying digital content nothing is guaranteed any longer for still being accessible long term into the future.

If Sony doesn't patch it "WHICH THEY SHOULD BECAUSE UTS AN EASY FIX" someone in the gaming community will fix the issue. They did it with PS3s that were not backwards compatible and/or multi region free, they did with absolutely hacking the Vita/PSP they'll do with the PS4 but ultimate all Sony needs to do is release a patch.
