Since I live in Johnstown, I thought I might shed some light on what happened after the video lets off. We lost the Chiefs in 2009 due to poor ownership. Now we have a junior team in the North American Hockey League named the Johnstown Tomahawks. They are preparing to be in their 2nd year of competition after losing in the first round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs.

Ben Mical That's right. They moved to Greenville, South Carolina and became the Road Warriors but then changed their name to the Swamp Rabbits a few years later. The Wheeling Nailers, the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, played half their home games of the 2009-2010 season in Johnstown. After that the Cambria County War Memorial Arena, the former home of the Chiefs, won the first Kraft Hockeyville USA contest and hosted the Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game last season, which by the way started the Penguins run to their 4th Stanley Cup in 25 years.

Me and my mom got to see Paul Newman filming in Central Park. I was a kid when the 77 flood happened. Bethlehem and US Steel and many businesses never reopened. It was devastating and the reason I left for the Air Force as soon as I graduated high school.

Dave Hanson also played for Herb Brooks at the U of M. But got into so many fights because of Herb's "fancy dance" European hockey style versus the dump n' chase North American Style.

I can't help but draw parallels, at least somewhat, between this story and The Broad Street Bullies.. Both such great stories from a magnificent time that no longer exists..

EXCELLENT!!! Question: I heard many years ago, from several people, that both Buffalo and Kenmore, New York were scouted as possible locations for the movie Slap Shot (including sightings of Paul Newman). I can't dig up any accounts of this. Can you assist? Thanks for great video!

Interesting. I had never heard that those areas were scouted as possible filming locations. I’ll see if I can find any written accounts of that. Glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers, my friend!

You could do a series of short docs on how many of the scenes in Slap Shot! were based on actual events. Also, the "Binghamton Dusters" Were named for the New York county they played in: The Broome Dusters.

Yes, they became the Binghamton Dusters after they joined the AHL.
@patrickhull9231
@patrickhull9231 4 года назад
@@emt5330 Incorrect. They were always the Broome Dusters. They weren't known as "Binghamton until the Hartford Whalers became their parent club (Binghamton Whalers). I'm from Binghamton and was a regular fan.

They were the Broome Dusters from 1973-77. When they came into the AHL in 77 until 1980 they were the Binghamton Dusters. They became the Binghamton Whalers in 1980. BTW, I'm from Vestal, so I was at the games too.
@patrickhull9231

@@emt5330 This is easily resolved: Please find a picture of a Dusters program, the cover of which says "Binghamton Dusters".You won't be able to because they were never the Binghamton Dusters.

I also have to wonder if the movie character " Tommy Hanrahan" was based on the player Alf Handrahan who played 14 games for the Cincinnati Stingers and was brought in for the sole purpose of fighting the goon squad of the Birmingham Bulls.

What about the "jaros de la Beauce" with Gilles Bilodeau, Wally Weir and cie, who played in the same league for two years, that really inspired, The movie. What you see in the movie Is more the history of the "jaros" than the "jets."
@peachman1970
@peachman1970 3 года назад
That is completely absurd. The movie was written by Nancy Dowd...sister of Ned Dowd who played for Johnstown Jets in 73-74 and 74-75. She wrote the movie based on tape recorded stories that happened with Johnstown Jets. She actually lived a year in Johnstown. The Hansons were based on the real life Carlsons...who also played for the Jets. The movie was filmed in Johnstown...and the Chiefs uniforms were patterned after the Jets. To say this movie was based on Beauce Jaros is completely absurd. Try again...LOL.

I agree especially the scenes in the stands and with the police; and I was There, Beauce # 14.
@peachman1970
@peachman1970 3 года назад
@@williambyers6731 LOL...the movie is entirely based on stories Ned Down (Johnstown Jets player) told his sister Nancy Dowd...who wrote the story based on events that happened during the 1974-75 season of Johnstown Jets. Who did Jack, Jeff, and Steve Carlson (the Hansons) play for? Jets or Jaros? Who did Dave Hanson, Guido Tenesi, Jean Tetrault, Ron Docken play for...Jets or Jaros? Was the movie shot in Johnstown, PA or in Quebec? Charleston Chiefs are the fictional representation of the Johnstown Jets. Beauce Jaros did not even exist during the 74-75 NAHL season. If anything...the Beause Jaros are loosely fictionalized as the Syracuse Bulldogs in the movie...as evidenced by the orange sweaters worn...same as Beauce Jaros.
