Hey Glamfam!
In this video, we are going to discuss protective styles, and what protective styling really is. Honestly there are a lot of common misconceptions about what styles are actually protective. Many styles have the potential to be protective styles, but when done incorrectly, all aspects of protective styling go out the window. My hope with this video is to get my viewers to see protective styling more holistically, rather than having a shallow understanding of the term. This way you can retain as much length as possible. As always, thanks so much for watching, you know I love you boo!
Stay Glam,
Linwood

Hello, I am so happy that I found someone who has got the information and also mentioned sth. for military ladies and gens. I have to wear quite tight caps and after years I still can't figure out what protective style I can really wear. The hairstyles must be really flat and right now I manipulate my hair daily. No heat involved, but a lot of pulling, pinning and so on, to cover my thinning edges and somehow create a low bun. I just want that elegant looking protective hairstyle that I can count on, on a daily basis. I need that lenght retention. Any ideas? Thank you so much. (I have akward short neck lenght hair, fine strands, low porosity)

Thank you so much for addressing the military bun! I’m in the Navy and chile… the first 2 years of my career was a hair struggle! I keep my hair in two braids now, secured by a little bun in the back. I had to keep it simple, especially when I’m deployed, because it’s easy to end up bald and sad 😂

I wish I had saw this before I got 26 in box braids..I thought I was doing a good thing protecting my natural hair..Not..My first week I lost a braid in front on both sides of my head..when I looked my hair was attached to the braids and I had bald spots...The hair has never grown back. Luckily I have enough hair to cover it but it is traumatic to see your edges just disappear from a so called protective style..I did the most right after I got my braids so most of the hair loss was my fault..Glad I saw this video..Thanks Glam Fam❤

Can you speak on protein in a lot of hair products for natural hair.... and how some hair types (low porosity) may be protein sensitive causing extreme dryness, stiffness, tangling and breaking .... such was my experience with 10 year old causing tears and tangles for months ... I had no idea she’s moisture I was using for years was slowly overloading her hair with proteins...

So I am going on a 1 year protective style journey to retain length by wearing kinky twists. These twists always prove to be very light weight on my hair and I wear my twists mostly down. In between this protective style I am making sure my ends will be trimmed on time. My only thing is, I don't want to blow dry my hair just to clip my ends because I am also on a no heat journey for the next year too. Can you provide any advice and/or suggestions I can take with me alongside my journey? I have a lot of respect for everything you have to say about hair!
@pilstonkhh3801

I've noticed that if I wear 2 strand twists I'll get even more single strand knots and more shedding. But if I flat twist my hair it's just fine. I have a lot of hair and that's all I can do now is flat twists because my hair gets so dry and tangled in other styles. Why is that? Also I tried the finger detangling method and I had shedding bigger than a baseball😩 Most moisturizers and brushes that people have recommended don't even work for me at all. I don't even know what to do anymore lol it takes me a minimum of 4 hrs to do my hair and nothing works the longer it gets

@GetGlamFam

Deep condition with moisture and see if they are still rough. If so they were probably using dull shears, in which case, yes you would need to trim again. If the deep conditioning seems to fix it then your ends were just dry 😊👍🏼

Hey Linwood, What does ACV do to hair's ability to absorb moisture and how can it be reversed? My hair used to drink water. I left ACV a little longer than 2minutes and my hair started having water beads sit on it. It's been months. I'm afraid I might have to cut it. #asklinwood

How do I know I cut off enough hair when getting rid of split ends? I cut my hair last night cuz its been stuck at bra length for a little over 2 years. But I found a much shorter strand that was split a lot. Does this mean I need a professional cut instead of doing it at home? Or do I need to cut off all my hair?

@Sheriece Shelton-yarber, I'm an avid hair-doer and unlicensed. I've had a love for hair since being able to sit starring in complete fasanation at anyone getting there hair done for whatever reason. I was a willing participant within the burgeoning of this industry. There was a first time braiding boutique in my area and I MUST state they were culprits of ALL Linwood stated in the video. My hair was cornrowed incredibly tight and then sewn INTO and PULLED even tighter. In the middle of this unbearable protective hair-do I couldn't bare the pressure and began holding my head and shifting my feet, and they offered me over the counter pain medicine which could've been anything really, now that I think back. I recall that it took me three days to feel releaf enough to be able to lay my head down. With all of this going on inflaming my scalp, there actual service conduct was terrible with them talking and carrying on unprofessionally over my head. There should be more confident persons such as this young man to teach on these issue that cause breakage, damage, keeping our hair dry, and dare I state Traction Alopecia. 💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓💓

There's no perfect way of moisturising hair while in braid except to loosen it because some part will not be moisturised. Moreover, if your hair has been sealed while conditioning before installing your braid, nothing will penetrate unless you raise your cuticle and to do that, you need to shampoo.

I’m leaving this here hoping it helps. My hair is a very very dry type 3 in humid weather and for a long time I was stuck at collar bone length and I just thought that would never change. Until I discovered protective styling. My mom had long, thick type 2/3 hair and never knew what to do with my hair. Hers just grew, my sisters just grew, I was left out in the cold with my shoulder length, just sweeping the bottom of my neck strands. I actually didn’t mind it so much until a medication reaction caused me to lose my hair in clumps and chunks. So I decided to pack my hair up for a season or 10 under half wigs and head bands. I recovered and learned so much that now I have the thickest, longest hair. It’s a lions mane that is about to hit my waist. Here is what I did. I wear wigs with no glue and during the day I will move the combs around so they don’t sit in one spot and destroy my edges. The inversion method does work in mysterious ways. It’s not always a length thing, sometimes I do it and I see how thick my hair looks or how shiny it is and while I have uneven growth, I rarely ever get split ends. Because I don’t get massive split ends I can examine my strands and use proper shears to nip them before they travel up the shaft. I drink tons of water and add collagen to it. My hair and skin loves it and it’s not too pricey. You can get collagen for about $10 a month. Try it and thank me later. Now the protective styles that got me from sad to glad! I braid my hair at the beginning of the month. Do a good deep deep conditioning and I do two cornrows at my hairline to “anchor” the wig then I box braid the rest. No heat, no heavy manipulation. I keep those braids for a month and wear a smaller satin bonnet so the my length is protected by the satin when I slap my hair hat on. And when I get home I take it off and let my scalp breath. Before bed put my homemade oils on and put on my sleep bonnet. And if the bonnet slips, I sleep on satin pillowcases. And they are pretty cheap. Tj maxx has them for a good price. Like under $10. And because my hair is so dry, I will coat my hair in a good leave in about every 3 days with the focus on my ends. The best oils to add IMO are cinnamon and peppermint to stimulate the scalp. And last tip. Keep your hair journey to yourself or maybe just one or two people that really rock for you. You won’t believe how many haters are out there that don’t want to see you grow and glow. I have secrets hair and skin tips I only share with one person because we are about empowering each other and women that share our melanin and positive vibes. So be careful who you share your success with. For the springy, beautiful type 4 ladies out there, these tips do work, but you have to remember, shrinkage is disrespectful and section your hair off. Also never degrade your curl pattern. Your curls can hear you and they need nurturing words too. Type 4 princesses have the most expansive and versatile texture that can literally do anything with a simple shift in products. I hope this makes sense and I hope it helps! ❤️

@@keepingupwithtristan why do so many of us have moms that can’t do hair? 😂 I’m so glad you are on your natural journey and learning more! That is a beautiful thing. My mom use to keep a fro. She would just wash and condition it and that’s it. Her hair was “kinky” but so soft. My mother was Muslim so she just put her hijab over her fro when she went out in public. When I tell you, when you stretched my mom hair, it went past her butt. Her hair was so healthy that she rarely had any tangling. From my observation, brushing, combing, braiding, manipulating, etc. your hair, will have your hair growing slow, cause breakage and hair loss. I love different styles, so I’m dealing with breakage.

And this is exactly why I don't wear braids, wings, weaves, etc and other styles that are considered protective. I have seen too many women with missing edges, bald patches, dry and damaged hair from them. My hair texture is fine and these styles will rip my hair out. I prefer to protect my hair by taking vitamins, drinking alot of water, leaving the cut, color and chemicals to professionals, clean and condition at home, limit the heat and sleep on a satin pillow case.

I've been following for a while and have a question about split ends. I notice split ends in the front middle of my head and they are splitting halfway up the hair shaft. What would you recommend? I'm thinking about cutting my hair to restart, but this would be the second time Ive done this in the past 3 years. I use Giovanni Ultra Moist shampoo and conditioner and Mizani 25 Miracle cream leave in. I love how it feels in my hair but I think I may need more? Cost isn't an issue when it comes to products. So I am looking for what you recommend? (I have natural hair with 2 different hair types, coils in the back and kinky in the front. (Sidenote: wish there was a blog where we could pose questions and have others interact with you!)

I have about 1/2 to 1 inch of hair but J wanted to get box braids. I plan to do them myself so I’m not worried about tension and I won’t use rubber bands. However, the braids will have to be really skinny since I can’t grip larger sections of my short hair. Should I go through with it?

I just took my protective style out and had damage slightly....you must of felt my spirit. I swear you have me wanting to travel to you! My hair is similar to your texture but softer and thinner. I can't hold any style for long without damage! I swear your videos are a godsend for me! As a person who was loc'ed for 10 years, your videos seriously help me (I took my locs down in January)

What about with toddlers? If I left her hair loose for a week I’d be brushing out food every day if not every meal.

It can still got in ponytails, 2 strand twists, etc, I would just let it rest from tighter styles like braids and cornrows, etc.

@@GetGlamFam how do I let the little fly always not be so fly away? She is almost three and since I’m not Black it would look bad for me if I don’t have her hair always looking good.

I wear wigs but I keep my hair shampooed & conditioned & oil my scalp and ends & I detangled but it’s thin and my hair gets so tangled with knots & tries to lockup . I’ve become so frustrated I ripped out my hair many times causing it to break and I’ve lost Hands full of hair that is frustrating.I remove my wig when I get home & give my hair time to breath as well as get sunshine outside . We have hard water here so I had a water filter installed to help me as well . What else can I do when my hair is determine to lockup on its own & it look a mess. Please tell me what to do I need help . Frustrated in Texas

Is there a wrong way to do a braid or bun that would make it cause damage rather than be protective (besides making it too tight and pulling at the roots)? I braid and use buns a lot (and take them out to change the positioning daily), but hair keeps breaking off. It doesn't even feel that dry but it's behaving like it is
