I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

As a single woman age 62, I’ve traveled to 40 countries since 1990, first as a global corporate expat and then post-retirement 7 years ago. I spend at least a month in each country, stay in Airbnb’s and budget the same as if I live in one place. Logistics are harder when traveling alone but I make an effort to meet new people via local tours, activity meetups and classes wherever I go. Everyone tells me I should start a RU-vid channel, but it seems like a lot of work and extra expense. I do enjoy 2GoRoam and other channels though!

I think there are quite a lot of single people who would like to retire early and travel the world, but are uncertain, because doing it all alone is only half of the fun. I am single myself and managed to build up a decent budget. If I had a partner, I would be more brave to do it. But then I asked myself, why I should wait for retirement? I decided to start doing more trips on my own now while I am still working. The experience will show me how much I will enjoy it doing all on my own. My next trip will be a week in Den Hague an I am really looking forward to it. Also because I will combine it with visiting friends on the way. If I feel that‘s for me, I still can shift to part time and do more trips like these until I decide to retire completely.

I am a contract pilot. On the road 20 years. Sold my house to pay for licences. Made a lot of money. But you can't come home! House prices are nuts. You won't get a mortgage. Too old. Can't rent. Too old. No job. You are unfortunately out. No NHS until you are back for at least 6 months. If you have a stroke in a TW country......😢. Must have savings !

I have a suggestion to Cat Obie, something my mum used to do. She would do a short tour of a country or region, just 10-12 days. Then she would see what she liked and then go back on her own, get a hotel or apartment and stay there for 2-3 weeks. As she already had a taste of it, she felt more confident and navigating around. Sometimes she would meet one or 2 others from the tour, and they would meet later.

I love love love your videos - just hopefully a helpful hint: I’m from Wales and also used to cook rice with a colander, but since I’ve lived in Spain I have learnt how to cook rice with zero excess water and therefore no colander required. Put a little olive oil in the pot with just one garlic clove if you like and heat up. Then add one cup of rice and stir around. Quickly add two cups of water and a pinch of salt and bring to the boil. Then cover with lid and turn the electric down to 2. When the water is all absorbed, the rice is perfect and served straight from the pot. (Around 10-12 minutes). Hope this helps! 😘

I'm glad you don't give financial advice or tell people how much or little money you have. Full respect! We rent out 1 property and use an agent. I live 2 miles from it & have nothing to do with it. It makes money & pays off the mortgage. When we set off next year, we'll rent out our main residence through an agent. If we want to come back to the UK, we have the house to live in or sell. Tut tut about the rice, 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water, lid on and perfect rice every time, ask Jamie Oliver🤣Surely it's cheaper to buy some kitchen things & leave in the airbnb if it saves £'s. Loving your work as usual!

As an aside, I bought my 3 year old narrowboat in 2019 for 65k. It's currently worth around 110k. I suspect that kind of increase won't occur again. If you buy an older boat, in more stable times, they tend to hold their value. ( A friend bought his 1989 in 2019 for 30k, now worth 50k, but covid increase again). I never worried about an expected depreciation because I had the experiences.

Neil and Sarah, thanks for the helpful videos and information. I'm 18-30 months away from retiring (due to family commitments) and the information that you provide gives me confidence that I can retire early. One question/or suggestion - in addition to your monthly budget, can you indicate how many meals you cooked at home versus at restaurants? I follow a couple on another channel (Our Freedom Years) who seem to splurge on nicer accommodations than you but have a lower overall budget. I think the difference is they cook most of their meals at home. When I retire, I'm not planning to cook most of my meals and will probably eat out as much or more than the two you do. Can you give me some sense of how many meals you eat out? This will greatly assist in budgeting.
@stavokg
@stavokg Год назад
Great question, I hope Neal and Sarah answer you. One consideration, it’s harder to eat healthfully while dining out. Eating at home can prolong your life, which also means more $ needed to live! 😁
@Donovan_Williams
@Donovan_Williams Год назад
@@stavokg I agree that cooking is usually healthier. I'm thinking that in my first several years of retirement, I'll be in more of an exploration phase. I'll probably visit lots of places and stay 2 weeks instead of 4. After a few years, I'll visit fewer places and stay 4-8 weeks at a time, and will probably have more time to cook. Eventually I'll buy apartments in 3-4 cities and live in each for part of the year, renting them out the remainder of the year. I want to do that because I want to be able to afford the places I like. A place like KL or Medellin could easily double or triple in price in a few years; I'd hate to get priced out of the places I like.

Great stuff. Love your vids. We are travellers as well but still grounded a bit by a job, but that is coming to and end soon as we retire early. On the question about bear markets. Just know that since the start of the market in the US, the longest bear market was 2.9 years. So 3 years was the worst with avg being just over a year. So we have 4 years of cash on hand to ride out market downturns while we will still be getting a little income off mixed bond funds that sit there earning 3 to 3.5% and then with upswings in the funds, we would take profits and live/backfill the cash bucket. Just one plan. There are plenty of ways to do it. Cheers !

Since retirement two years ago we leave the frozen north (Canada) for 5 months or so to travel in a warm climate somewhere. Each year we have had our credit card compromised in one way or another, once stolen, another time cancelled due to an internet purchase problem. I’m sure you have back ups as we do too but ultimately we need to acquire and activate a new credit card. In our case it simply means waiting until we get home again but in your case how would you deal with having to replace a lost, stolen, compromised or even expired credit/debit card?

Another RU-vidr shared this: If you need to have a credit card (or other sensitive material) mailed to you in a foreign country, have it sent to the local DHL or Mail Boxes Etc. office marked "hold for customer pickup" with your name and phone number. The office will call you when it arrives and you will need to show your passport and tracking number (provided by the sender) to obtain your mail. I've had this done with bank cards, tax forms, real estate documents and remote voting ballots many times with no problems!

The funny thing about this video is you should STILL invest in Tesla because the upside is going to continue to grow. That 1K will look nice invested in it 5 years from now....

Can you recommend any books that helped you on your path to financial literacy?

Hi Sonja, absolutely we can. Highly recommend "A Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins. It is simple, straightforward and contains everything anyone would need. There is a bias to US markets but it is easy to translate that to wherever you are based.

Thanks Geoff. I understand that VWRL is a Vanguard fund but was just wondering if the fund was being managed using the Vanguard platform or one of the other platforms.

I'm curious. Why do you travel from one country to another country rather than explore just one country fully before moving on to another country?

Lots of countries you can only stay a month.
@carolinacadabra8278
@carolinacadabra8278 Год назад
Yes it all comes down to how long you can stay on a tourist visa. Otherwise you have to go through the hassle and expense of getting a residence visa to stay long term.

For us personally, if doing say Vietnam, after the month, we'd go to Cambodia, then back to Vietnam. Surely that cuts down on costs?
@DD2015_FreshStart

@@1965stockport that’s what I thought. If you left for a weekend or week, you could still take advantage of cheaper living expenses using a long term Airbnb rental. That’s what my husband and I are considering. I love the idea of traveling everywhere, but I’m definitely a slow travel-type of person, like a month or so before moving onward. Lots to consider.
