Here are some suggestions to overcome dinoflagellates in your tank. Lots of good points were made after the initial discussion, so stick around for the Q&A section too.

Hi Marc, I just subscribed to your channel and I’m new to the hobby I bought a used 55 gal tank that has been up and running since February 1st. I started with 15lbs of live rock and live sand and it’s been a journey. I’m running a Marineland 360 and a SCA302 protein skimmer. I’ve learned so much from videos like yours and so far have only had diatoms that is the norm for a new tank. I appreciate your knowledge and I’m taking it in like a sponge, keep up the great work. Thanks

marc is great in knowledge, if ive had my 55 gallon tank for just over a year now with no problems for the most part, he inspired me to start up my own reef page as well. i did have over 90 videos but something happened to where everything got deleted including subscribers so needless to say im starting over again sadly. but id like to extend the offer of checking out my page as well. i have a basic set up as i call it with slightly more pricey equipment. i just would like to say also you should have about 2" of sand in your tank so i hope you have more that 15lbs of sand in there, i have about 45 lbs of live rock in my tank. but between me and marc you should be able to learn a lot quickly, also have you joined club meleves reef on facebook? if you havent you should as well. we are here as a reefing community to help each other out, like i always say happy reefing happy life!

Hi Marc, causes as you said at 16:35, spot on low nutrients can be a major cause. When it is this cause it goes straight to your intro that dont do a water change. When this is the cause the number one solution is kn03. Come up to 2ppm+ and fixed in 24 to 48 hours. The thought is the lack of nutrients makes them turn into aggressive scavengers as they fight to survive in the low nutrient water.

Chemi Clean does have some effect in Dino. I have used it (in conjunction with other methods) to fight it for years. It seams to push it back about 75%. I would follow that up with manual cleaning and daily dosing with Pohls Coral Snow and bacteria. Do the Chemi Clean recommended water change and keep up with the daily manual cleaning and dosing for about 2 weeks. This method has worked on my DT every time I have tried it. But it has failed on my fishroom tanks. I am guessing it is because out of site out of mind and this you tend not to keep up with the required maintenance.

I have dino in the smaller of my two reefs. I call it my junk tank. The nitrates have always been high in that one. My filtration doesn’t keep up and I rarely ever do wc’s. The dino didn’t come until I added more live rock and a really intense LED light.

I actually left the hobby about a year ago and went to freshwater because a of dinos. I completely agree with I the fact that they come up due to a lack of bio diversity in our enclosed ecosystem. Another instance is that come up when there are no nitrates and phosphates. I got them in my system when I added and algae scrubber, phosphate rx, and flucanzole to battle algae that broke out. Well dinos came with it. The tank was also started with dry rock and dry sand. I believe that there is correlation

Six months ago Marc you could've seen mine it was everywhere. I'm not over selling it killed almost all my coral except my palys and zoas they wouldn't open. I tried everything. I put a huge dent in it by vacuuming the sandbed thru my uv that helped move it along. I'm still fighting it but it's manageable I'm dosing dino x now for that last punch.

How do you syphon it out when it is growing on rocks? I thought I had diatoms until I watched a you tube about this. Its green and I think it just appeared after my waterchange or got real bad anyway.
@marcelrodriguez2067

I dont suggest you do water changes atleast for a couple of months after dinos as it will bring them back like it happened with me.

Some say up carbon dosing and others say up nitrates! Wow! It really came on hard when I quit carbon dosing. I am going to try daily cleaning to get under control then small amount of peroxide at first I guess!. Should I up alk from 7.8 and what would happen if I used Vibrant? If it i s GHA I hear its great for that!

My Reef Flux was also a pill. Is there a different version you can buy? Not hoping to need it again but the pills were a pain in the butt.

Lucky for you, you got the type that goes into the water column at night, sadly mines always stays on the sand and the uv is doing nothing.

Dinoflagellates are the worst of the three. I got rid of dinoflagellates for ever by taking out all the sand and replacing with small gravel or you could go bare-bottom. IT'S THE SAND!

I killed dinos by turning out the lights and dosing Vibrant at double or triple strength. I had tried everything prior with no success. My tank was crystal clean and dinos gone in 5 days.
@marcelrodriguez2067
@marcelrodriguez2067 4 года назад
I added vibrant and it just made my dinos worse, the best thing to beat it is to keep nutrients high.

@@marcelrodriguez2067 it solved my problem all together on multiple occasions. But I've read some mixed results. There are some theories why it works differently in different systems. Some people have even claimed losses from it. I personally have used nearly ten times the dose per week at times with amazing results. I would use caution i guess, but I wont go without it.

Siphoning the water through a 1 micron sock will trap all the dino cells since they cant get through it.
@melevsreef
@melevsreef 4 года назад
That's great, but where can you get a 1 micron sock? The finest I'm aware of is a 5 micron sock, and those literally came to market 2 weeks ago.

@@melevsreef amazon always has them for sale, has worked great so far. Only thing is dont put it in the sump just use it to siphon the sand and then add the water back since it will get clogged fast lol

I don’t understand this. You admittedly state in this video that you have little to no experience with dinos, yet you give advice on how to treat it??? How is that? Please don’t post a video on a topic you admit to have little experience in.
