Anyone who looks down on someone who bought their costumes in a shop needs to re-think what cosplay is about. It's about having fun, meeting new people with same interests and spend the whole time there with a big smile. People who bring toxicity by saying something negative about others costumes shouldn't attend these events. I bought my Kylo Ren costume! Modified it a bit and made my own neck seal, but it is a shop costume from XCoser. Cheers and greetings from Poland ^^

Thanks for the positive attitude as always Zonbi. People need to get off their high horse with looking down on others for buying costumes. I mean at the end of the day we are all dressing as fictional characters and it should be fun for all.

Haru Glory , I agree. Making it yourself should only matter if you are entering a costume makers' contest. Otherwise, cosplay is about _fandom_. So, when snobs put others down, that's like saying, "You're not allowed to be a Marvel fan because you don't know how to sew." Believe me, Marvel would never support a stance like that, which reduces the number of fans, abd thereby reduces the number of people buying their merchandise and movie tix. When I sew my own for a non-contest event, I just happen to he showing my fandom for both the character AND for sewing. :)

This is a great video and it was interesting to hear someone who knows how to sew talk about quality. Personally for the rest of us cosplayers that can't sew these sites are helpful. My biggest gripe about these sites though is sometimes the product shown for sale is not the same as the product you receive or they look pretty inaccurate. They hit or miss the mark, but I still really enjoy these sites for the very fact that I can't sew and I'm an armor cosplayer.

I normally make/modify my own simple costumes (still fairly new and not great at sewing) but I think it's fine to buy cosplays. For example, last con I went to I bought a Pennywise costume from ebay. The quality wasn't amazing but it still looked really good - I added a couple accessories and did my own hair and makeup. The end result got a really great reception and I actually came second in the masquerade!

I have bought several costumes for charity work from Procosplay and Cosplaysky and have been happy with the quality for the price. The fit isnt perfect but I also didnt opt for custom sizing. The one downfall with most of these sites are the accessories arent as good as the suits themselves. Which is fine as I dont mind upgrading stuff like belts, straps versus trying to sew a complicated suit like Captain America. There is no harm in anyone buying a costume to wear and it is a great intro to start with and perhaps improve upon as you go. I make my own costumes as well but dont have the sewing skills for overly complicated outfits. My only word of advice for people is just be honest about it, dont enter a contest and claim you made everything when you bought it.
@GraceWillow
@GraceWillow 6 лет назад
Awesome! Thank you for your advice!
@VixanneDarkfairy
@VixanneDarkfairy 6 лет назад
TheGame2K5 Absolutely on the honesty! Some cosplay contests DO allow an all-store-bought costume, if only for the lowest prize category, so it's ok to enter those, but NEVER lie and claim someone else's work!

Sorry for this little rant but LET ME EXPLODE ON TWO DIFFERENT TOPICS 1) is about store bought Cosplayers 2) store not to buy from 1) I don’t have a issue with people who buy store bought costumes. Some people aren’t skilled enough to sew. Cosplay is about having fun not about who is better. But when people are like “you did sew/make that right.” While they have store bought costume gets me so annoyed. Like you don’t know the struggle about sewing , Putting it together, fixing it, and etc. Not everyone can make their cosplay. 2) Dont buy from MicoCostumes. They are known for being racist and rude to plus size buyers. They’ve been exposed many times but deny any of it.

It was nice to see IW Widow with red hair, just because they gave reasons for that change doesn't mean I have to like it lol I've only lightly dabbled in making cosplays, I did Travis Touchdown, making the beam katana and tiger print jacket was pretty fun. i don't mind store brought cosplays, but they never seem to make ones of characters i wanna cosplay as, or the quality of what's shown in the images isn't all that good XD

The first con I went to, I went with my 6 yr old nephew. I went as old school April and I made his Shredder costume out of an old purple dress I had (his cape), his ninja Halloween costume and all the spikes he had were made out of duct tape covered cardboard Lol We had a blast! Cosplay is all about having fun, meeting new people, and good vibes. :)

I put together a "Wash" (from Firefly) costume for a sci-fi Halloween a few years back, I bought a jump-suit (which ended up being too small) and found a Hawaiian shirt with the exact same print on it (albeit a bit large). Technically store-bought but I rocked it with some plastic dinosaurs :)

Hey I just want to say I really appreciate your clarity and honesty in the reviews ! So many times I see reviews of online cosplays and they don’t ever seem to point out the bad parts of the cosplay, only the good which makes it really difficult if you are actually trying to buy that cosplay if you should trust the review to be honest about the quality.

Store bought cosplays are such a great way to get into the hobby! It’s less overwhelming than taking on a huge project with lots of details, especially if you have limited energy due to chronic illness or if you are just busy and pressed for time. I’m buying parts to my own cosplay at the moment and it’s just so much easier to worry about, between my job and assisting my mom, who works from home.

I love to see these reviews before buying as you can get an idea what your getting. As far as store bought or make your own for those who look down on those who buy that's an issue they need to work on, for myself I will make if I can but 90% of mine are store bought. My first official display costume was a Rebel Fleet Trooper at that convention is where I met member's of the 501st and am now a member. My profile photo is of myself and one of the 501st member's I first met and is now a good friend :).

I don’t know why, but as much as I kind of hate the process of making a cosplay, I can’t bring myself to buy one! I was introduced to the hobby at a young age and always got them made by my mom until I could sew for myself and I guess it would just feel wrong to not make the costume. It’s cool that you can get good quality costumes though and that the options are there for others!! That Black Widow costume looks fantastic!!

I think this kind of vid is very helpful, because I often get fans asking me where they can just buy a decent quality costume -- especially if they are going (to a con) in costume for the first time. I'm Disabled now, so retired from custom costume sewing, so I can't just say, "I'll make it for you" anymore.

Great vid. On time I bought a genuine leather reverse flash jacket for $95 I did it on impulse because it looked great. While it was on its way I took time to do more research. I found out it was coming from Canada and the store is from pakastan. I also found out that the picture that the used was not there picture. I started to get super sketched out so I was planning to return it once I get it but then it came and it was a super nice reverse flash jacket for the fraction of the price of other leather reverse flash jackets.

Hi! I bought my gamora costume from CosplaySky and it was so much better than the Kylo Ren seems to be. I had to remake all the belts and leather accessoiries in general, but the pants and the coat were of amazing quality. im a beginner cosplayer and have only done 3 cosplays so far. two of them were just stuff i found at the thrift store. i recently bought a hideri kanazaki cosplay on ebay and i was kinda scared that i wasted $40, but it was all good. at the same time i was looking down on myself for buying a cosplay instead of making one. when i saw this video, it made me not doubt myself! i personally think i wouldnt have been able to make a frilly maid costume with school and not owning a sewing machine or anything (haha 8th grade sucks). so, thanks for making this video! :)

EZcosplay also does custom sizing. I don't know if that would make a difference, but at least on their instagram it seems like a lot of the viral cosplayers tend to shop from them. I might consider it for my first cosplay since I can't sew (I tried taking sewing class in high school and it was a disaster!)

I'm always amazed how different the communities are between Germany and other countries. I think the same about bought costumes. I have an OC cosplay from Warhammer 40k Space Wolves. I actually wanted to build it all by myself. but because of my pregnancy and later the new born baby, I decided to buy the armor. That was more comfortable for me and allowed me to handle my little one. A sipmle EVA armor without any blingbling and LARP-conform. I made a dress to wear under the armor and a few props by myself. But we've seen that there are many (like most) in the german cosplay community that lookdown upon you for buying even parts of your costume. All my work and my individual designs are worth nothing, because I didn't build the armor myself. And the worst part is: They will never admit it. They're all like "it's ok if you don't have the time/tools/etc." but you can always see that "look down upon you" in their faces.
@anarchyantz1564

I remember when I could kick my leg up that high (without falling over)............damn when did i get old lol On to other points for those getting cosplay costumes online, be aware of size differences in other countries and what they consider to be small, medium, large etc. For example i am heavy set and broad across the shoulders. Tried on some I was helping my nephew get and the so called "Extra large" wasnt even big enough for me to get my head through the hole to slip it on! On the plus side it fitted my nephew great with some added foam padding to emulate muscles.
@VixanneDarkfairy
@VixanneDarkfairy 6 лет назад
Anarchy Antz Country of origin is indeed important. Oriental countries, plus India and Pakistan all use a smaller sizing system than America. It's best to take actual body measurements and match to the company's size chart.
@anarchyantz1564
@anarchyantz1564 6 лет назад
Exactly Vixanne. plus even UK and Europe are different to one another as well as America. I try to use a world clothing size chart for a guide reference as a 6 in America is 6/8 in UK, 7-9 in Japan, 36 in France, spain and Portugal, 34 in Germany and Scandinavia, 40 in Italy and an 8 in Australia and New Zealand. Talk about confusing and that was just for the WOMEN! Men have their own one it seems. It gets worse when they simply say Small, Medium, Large, XL and so on. There has even been controversy recently in the UK where even different stores in the UK claim to be one size, yet when you lay similar garment over another they are vastly different! It certainly is frustrating.
@VixanneDarkfairy

Anarchy Antz Wow. I didn't know about the inconsistent sizes in England. That definitely makes things complicated.

I buy and modify store bought costumes because I can’t afford a sewing machine/fabrics. I took a Belle costume and improved it by adding small roses to it. I bought a cheap Rapunzel wig and made flower bobby-pins to put in it. It’s just easier to modify costumes that to try and make them when you really don’t know what you’re doing.

I never got EZ cosplay before because their pics made it look sketchy. but maybe I'll check them out some time. I don't have as much time and energy as I used to for making my cosplays from scratch anymore. I still do (My newest cosplay, Sheeta from Castle in the Sky, was completely from scratch because her outfit is pretty simple and quick to make), but not as much as I used to when I was younger and living with my parents. Now I normally "cheat" by buying a premade as a base and then editing it up to my personal standards.

I don't have a problem with store bought costumes at all, but coming off a weekend of being at a con in the biggest cosplay project I've ever tried, I have to admit that it can be frustrating to walk around with a friend in a store bought costume when you worked so hard on your own. I spent sleepless nights and slaved over armor painting and foam molding only to feel completely upstaged by my friend who bought her costume online and then got it tailored. I would never discourage someone from buying a costume, but I have to say that from a creator standpoint, I've got to give extra props and respect to people who put in the work to really make their own stuff. To me, that's the real hobby of cosplay for me- the creation of the costume just as much as the wearing it.

Pretty great video! Personally I don't do store-bought cosplay, I'm no elitist or snob, but I've been making my cosplays from scratch since I properly started around 4 or 5 years ago, it's what I'm used to and can be really therepeutic when life gets hectic, as well as being cheaper and allowing me to do less mainstream characters. The closest things that I have which come to store-bought are my Vader, Kylo and Luke/Rey/Anakin sabers and Vader helmet, and even then they've been modded.

The CYAN spartan I'd be lying if I said I actually saved money sewing my own. LOL I really get into my fabrics and embellishments. Only when I sew big Shakespearean costumes can I claim to save cash. But at 5'2", I have to shorten even pants sold in the Petites department, so I figure it is easier to fit from scratch than unpick stitching for alterations and still having to live with the fact a clasp is not right, or the skirt's fullness is lacking.

I dig that Widow suit, but I really wish the best was green like in the film.. I usually craft everything, but I have bought costumes from time to time and from personal experience WhiteSheep Leather have never failed me. Their selection is excellent, their quality for the price is unparalleled, and they do custom costumes and tailoring. It’s so good. Sure it’s a bit pricier than CosplaySky and such at 300-400 dollars a suit but it’s so good! I don’t think I ever want to take my White Sheep Leather Daredevil Suit off now. It is interesting to see all these brands compared tho. I’m curious how many re use/share the costumes... or, in general, just how many of those freakin’ websites are just the same website repackaged..

Can you make a video on how you take clothing items in to fit your size? Thanks!

Once upon a time I bought a costume online via HelloCosplay (don't buy from there it takes forever and everything is disproportionately sized) ... and it came with the longest skirt in existence, and a top that was much too small. Is it still technically a store-bought-cosplay if you tear it apart and only use one component of it? Probably not, anyways with my mom's help (because I can sew buttons... but not seams by hand), I created the most awesome --and probably overdone-- Queen Elsa costume ever. All it took was dismantling a poorly made cosplay down to it's sparkly blue tube top and around $100 canadian. Never doing that again. Thanks for the resources! I'm planning to do a Pidge/Katie (Voltron: Legendary Defender) cosplay in the fall. Subscribed~

I've never done a full technical cosplay even though teach how to fight and choreography lightsaber fights and have a full custom performance outfit for an original character. However, this year I'm doing an Infinity War Captain / Applejack My Little Pony mashup. I got an outfit from moviescostumes.com and effing Love it. Super well made especially for the pricey cost. But I've had the pants altered for size. I'm having a lot of fun learning how to do all the accessories to improve the outfit. Especially from your tutorials. I think the accessories gives someone new, like me, a great area to practice and learn as well as a way to enter into the cosplay world. I'm super excited for the convention at the end of July. I'll share pictures too.

I make my costumes but every now and than there is a costume that I really want and it's too difficult to make. The only store bought costume I have is a spiderman suit because it is insanely hard to make those!

Can anyone point me to a store I can get a pleather Batman cape for a good price? All I can find are custom ones in Etsy stores but they're $140 upwards (which I cant really spare) or ones that are a part of a full costume but those either have no scallops or they're too short and cost even more because its a full suit.

I almost bought a Vampire Knight school uniform just for the metal decorations. At the time I didn’t have the ability to fabricate those pieces, but I knew I could tailor a better uniform. Ultimately the project idea was shelved as my interest in the manga waned, so I’m not unhappy I saved that $150 plus shipping. Re: the fit of store bought costumes. I’ve done some alterations for friends when they bring me their eBay cosplays. You just never know what you’re going to get from overseas vendors, even if you carefully compare measurements and communicate explicitly with the vendor. I practically remade an Evangelion girl’s uniform for a cross playing friend, and my sister’s Selene costume (from the Underworld movies) fell off her, it was so oversized. That said, I can fix “too big” more easily than “I can’t breath and my butt is on display,”

I don’t understand why there is hatred in buying cosplay since a lot people (including myself) aren’t good at building costumes and sewing them together! See, as a cosplayer, I don’t really have enough time to build cosplays straight from scratch so it’s amazing when it’s already made for you and you can add your own adjustments.

If you haven't finished seeing the rest of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series yet, Funimation has already released 3 out of the 4 Rebuild of Evangelion films. They are basically a retelling of the story of Evangelion.
