"This isn’t incoherent. It reflects a clear principle: Only Trump and his allies, his supporters, and their anointed are entitled to the rights and protections of the law, and if necessary, immunity from it. The rest of us are entitled only to cruelty, by their whim. This is how the powerful have ever kept the powerless divided and in their place, and enriched themselves in the process." "It is not just that the perpetrators of this cruelty enjoy it; it is that they enjoy it with one another. Their shared laughter at the suffering of others is an adhesive that binds them to one another, and to Trump." "The president and his advisers have sought to enrich themselves at taxpayer expense; they have attempted to corrupt federal law-enforcement agencies to protect themselves and their cohorts, and they have exploited the nation’s darkest impulses in the pursuit of profit. But their ability to get away with this fraud is tied to cruelty." "Trump’s only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty. It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, blackVoters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright. The president’s ability to execute that cruelty through word and deed makes them euphoric. It makes them feel good, it makes them feel proud, it makes them feel happy, it makes them feel united. And as long as he makes them feel that way, they will let him get away with anything, no matter what it costs them." --Adam Serwer, The Atlantic December 2019 "All cruelty springs from weakness." --Seneca

Years ago our chief of police mandated that all sworn members of the agency had to tour the Holocaust Museum in DC. I went and unfortunately missed the bigger picture because I was so mad that we were forced to go. Then after the tour we had a round table with a few of the staff members and a survivor. I was now throughly pissed off because they made it sound like we, current law enforcement, could be manipulated and fall into the same trap the police and military of that regime did. I’m losing my mind, refused to participate in the discussion, no way could that happen. Can’t happen here. Actually look much further back to the Goldwater campaign in the sixties. Reagan was the culmination of nearly two decades of ground work to make it so. Most of it started as a back lash to the civil rights act and the voting rights act but not the passage but the proposals. A lot of the founding work has been going on since the constitution was signed as a reaction from those in the prior Aristocracy to stop the grand experiment of self governance that America represents. The top dogs did not want to give up their power and have fought us from the very beginnings. PS Clinton was the transition of the Democrats to join in the Reagan Revolution and unify the ideology on both sides of the aisle. The class war of the "new Aristocrats" against the workers. The real class war that they started and will never surrender on.

Woah there, we don't want to get all communist and stuff, lol. But seriously, yes, it's time to go back to that rate or something closer to it. The other thing I think makes sense is to raise the cap on social security taxes. Right now if you make over some ridiculously low amount per year, like 185,000, you pay no more social security tax. So anyone making 500,000 a year is only paying ss taxes on 185,000 of that money. I don't mean to suggest making 185,000 is peanuts, just that if you are making 300,000, there is no reason to pay ss on only 185,000 other than when the laws were written the 185 was astronomical and mostly everyone but the robber barons would pay on most of what they earned. So if we were to raise the tax rates to 70-90% as you suggest, we would have more than enough money to fund all sorts of things we really need in this country. Then if we raise the cap on social security, people will not have to worry about the fund going broke, which is something RWers are always screaming about, and their solution is to kick people off or privatize it, and that would be disastrous.

Side note for Umberto Eco's list: something don't even have to meet all of the characteristics to be fascist. It's even common for a fascist regime to not quite hit all of them, yet "Trumpism" hits all of them, and hard.
@PaulBijenhof
@PaulBijenhof 2 года назад
Yep. Eco's list is not a definition, it's a list of common signs most fascist movements share. One thing that has changed since Eco wrote his list is the opposition to "modernism", which nowadays more often manifests as an opposition to "postmodernism", which often isn't even really postmodernism. In conjunction, these fascists will promote a defense of "modernism", by which they mean a historically distorted version of the Enlightenment (which gets presented primarily as a tradition in their cult of tradition). It's the fear of new ideas and of the changes in social relations those new ideas entail that is central to understanding this sign of fascism, not the opposition to "modernism" specifically.

Pity then that he is suggesting that Mussolini's or Franco's parties were opposed to modernism - that is, if he means modernism in the vernacular sense of "futurism." (Don't get me started on toxic 20th Century futurism.) The appeal of those movements, as well as that of similar in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and elsewhere, was precisely in their blending of pseudo-modernist pseudoscience, futuristic aesthetics, and reactionary wishful thinking. Mussolini spoke of creating a whole new kind of citizen, the Italian Fascist, and promised a bold new Third Way, a new form of economic organisation (national syndicalism) that was an alternative to both Communism and the "corrupt" kind of capitalism - collaboration between the classes would be the solution. His new Italian Empire would rival those of Northern Europe and would complete the Risorgimento, the unification (reunification, he would claim) of Italy that began around 1870. This bewildering contradiction between reactionary traditionalism, and hope, change and salvation in a "scientific" (big quotes) and modern imperial state, with a supposedly radical economic programme that did absolutely nothing to challenge the wealthy, was what drew so many supporters. Hope and familiar comfort in a time of crisis.

No single person can stop a political movement, but there is a pro-democracy, pro-change counter-movement. Each time you do anything to support that movement, you’re making a difference. Each of us can contribute. Even single moms working 3 jobs while living in poverty can talk to family and coworkers. Most of us in better circumstances. A couple hours helping a voter rights group file papers away, or making sure there’s hot drinks for people going door to door in cold weather, or writing letters to papers or posts to socials - every bit is part of the effort, and it’s only by knowing we’re not alone and continuing to do our part that we all succeed.

The goals of both groups are the same. By 2010 they'd taken over the GOP and began converting it into today's monster. It took Hitler only 3 years to kill the German democracy. Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” ••so if you are judging women on abortion rights or the gay community because this is a “Christian” nation - you are going against both the Bible AND the constitution, but your pastor wouldn’t tell you that, would he? > 2 ) if you are against wearing a mask and social distancing - they KNEW that was the right thing to do over 3,500 years ago: Leviticus 13:45-46 “Anyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp. > 3 ) if you think it’s OK to bow out of the Paris Agreement on climate change - the Bible says it’s not: Revelation 11:18 The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your people who revere your name, both great and small - and for destroying those who destroy the earth.” > 4 ) if your pastor insists that you pay tithes because if you don’t - as John Hagee has stated, “if you are not tithing you’re stealing from God!” ..to that, i say give me God’s bank account number so i can deposit direct and the pertinent verse to counter Hagee: 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. ••the tithe was to support the Jewish Priesthood and the Temple - and the Temple is no longer there > 5 ) the NATION that God blesses is a “collective” nation from all of mankind: Psalms 33:12-14 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth- 6 ) Christian warfare: 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. > 7 ) to be sure your pastors are telling you the truth: Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. > 8 ) God is not partial to the US because the embassy was moved to Jerusalem: Acts 10:34-35 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 9 ) i’ve read the Bible and figured much of this this out for myself (rather than be fed cherry-picked verses) so you can rest assured that i can INDEED think for myself: … and finally: Galatians 4:16 Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?

This is a phase of capitalism. Capitalism enables an ever-growing accumulation of wealth, and thus an accumulation of political power. When the inequality has skyrocketed, many people become disenfranchised and angry (especially after an economic crisis). That's when the siren song of fascism becomes attractive to many. And the wealthy like facism, because it only talks about national pride, not about equal distribution of wealth. Fascism does not endanger their wealth. When the rich befriend the fascists, you'd better watch out.

We have similar, though not as extreme, neo-fascist movements in Sweden. They're not as militaristic, because gun culture and hypermasculine culture of violence isn't as much a part of Sweden's history or cultural makeup. But most of the characteristics still match. In fact, it doesn't much matter which definition of fascism you use; a party currently claiming 20% of votes here, and which several other parties ally themselves with, matches them all pretty well. I usually say this: I'm not calling them fascist just because I don't like them. (Which is, of course, what they claim whenever they're called out.) Rather, I don't like them because they're fascists. They match the criteria, the definitions.

@@dwi2921 I see it as the difference between having a gun culture and just… having guns. Guns and ownership of guns is not something most swedes consider part of their identity. There are absolutely gun hobbyists in sweden, but it's not like a national pasttime. We have no Open Carry nuts. No "gun shows". No second amendment. The people who own guns here own them primarily because they need them to do something else - usually hunting. The guns aren't "the thing" in themselves, if you understand me. That's what I mean by "no gun culture".

@@dwi2921 Well, the ones who owns gun here (legally), do it because they are hunters, or shoot guns as sport and are members of gun-shooting clubs. Ownership and storage of guns though are heavily regulated. As in they track not only that you have a gun, but the exact model, and specific gun. And then it is is up to the police to determine if you are eligble or not. For example: We had a guy that competed and was very successful (as in top tier in Sweden) in two types of pistols. He applied for a license for a third type of pistol, and got denied for that, as they thought he did not shoot that type enough to warrant that he would be allowed to own one.. We do not have open-carry (and no concealed carry either). Used to be also that members of the "homeguard" (voluntary reserve for the military) could have guns at home. That is no longer allowed as far as I know.

Conservatism is providing a stability to the social framework, by being a reactionary force that tries to hold onto the status quo that seems to have worked so far. The older you get the more often you will encounter this phenomenon in your day to day life yourself.. like 'why did this change? didn't this work before? I was fine how it worked. Why change it? It worked better before! I don't like this new version of it.' I have had these kind of encounters first with my grandma.. then with my dad.. and these days I encounter myself from time to time experiencing this very same thing. You have to look at society as a meta organism, a social organism, just made up of individuals like a multicellular organism is made up of single cells. It does behave in 'similar' ways.. So in a sense it is a stability thing that helps to keep the framework working, resisting against too much change that might not work out as intended and destroy things in the process of being applied. It's a risk aversion strategy of sorts. There are costs (known and unknown) involved in (re)learning how things function. Adoption to new/changed processes. It costs time and effort, sometimes removes efficiency for some time or even forever that the former version had..

Here you go Beau - 14 Characteristics of Fascism (Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco, 1995) 1. The cult of tradition. “One has only to look at the syllabus of every fascist movement to find the major traditionalist thinkers. The Nazi gnosis was nourished by traditionalist, syncretistic, occult elements.” 2. The rejection of modernism. “The Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, is seen as the beginning of modern depravity. In this sense Ur-Fascism can be defined as irrationalism.” 3. The cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.” 4. Disagreement is treason. “The critical spirit makes distinctions, and to distinguish is a sign of modernism. In modern culture the scientific community praises disagreement as a way to improve knowledge.” 5. Fear of difference. “The first appeal of a fascist or prematurely fascist movement is an appeal against the intruders. Thus Ur-Fascism is racist by definition.” 6. Appeal to social frustration. “One of the most typical features of the historical fascism was the appeal to a frustrated middle class, a class suffering from an economic crisis or feelings of political humiliation, and frightened by the pressure of lower social groups. 7. The obsession with a plot. “The followers must feel besieged. The easiest way to solve the plot is the appeal to xenophobia.” 8. The enemy is both strong and weak. “By a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak.” 9. Pacifism is trafficking with the enemy. “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life but, rather, life is lived for struggle.” 10. Contempt for the weak. “Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology.” 11. Everybody is educated to become a hero. “In Ur-Fascist ideology, heroism is the norm. This cult of heroism is strictly linked with the cult of death.” 12. Machismo and weaponry. “Machismo implies both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality.” 13. Selective populism. “There is in our future a TV or Internet populism, in which the emotional response of a selected group of citizens can be presented and accepted as the Voice of the People.” 14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak. “All the Nazi or Fascist schoolbooks made use of an impoverished vocabulary, and an elementary syntax, in order to limit the instruments for complex and critical reasoning.” List source: www.openculture.com/2016/11/umberto-eco-makes-a-list-of-the-14-common-features-of-fascism.html About Italian Author Umberto Eco (Foucault’s Pendulum, The Name of the Rose): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umberto_Eco Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco (1995) www.pegc.us/archive/Articles/eco_ur-fascism.pdf

@joansparky4439
@joansparky4439 2 года назад
@@dalstein3708 Imho the way to stop them is to analyze what the root cause is that allows their movement to get so much buy-in and then try to change/alleviate/eliminate this root cause. What is the common theme through history that gives raise to this? What state are societies in, what developments do they have run through to fall victim to this? Per my logic it's economic stress caused by something that Adam Smith described 250 years ago (he described one way of how this works for one aspect of society) and which is much older than that even, it goes like this: _"The interest of the dealers [referring to stock owners, manufacturers, and merchants.. anyone really], however, in any particular branch of trade or manufacture, is always in some respects different from, and even opposite to, that of the public. To widen the market and to narrow the competition, is always the interest of the dealers. To widen the market may frequently be agreeable enough to the interest of the public; but to narrow the competition must always be against it, and can serve only to enable the dealers, by raising their profits above what they naturally would be, to levy, for their own benefit, an absurd tax upon the rest of their fellow-citizens."_ & _"The proposal of any new law or regulation of commerce which comes from this order, ought always to be listened to with great precaution, and ought never to be adopted till after having been long and carefully examined, not only with the most scrupulous, but with the most suspicious attention. It comes from an order of men, whose interest is never exactly the same with that of the public, who have generally an interest to deceive and even to oppress the public, and who accordingly have, upon many occasions, both deceived and oppressed it."_ Do you recognize what he describes? Imho he describes how monopolies/oligopolies are being created with the help of societal rules (which are being enforced by the monopoly force of a society - government). This is why I call the end goal of this development Monopolism - a societal system, where a few benefit at the cost of the rest. Monopolisms come in many different shapes and forms. But their common theme is clear. And for a big part of the society they cause economic stress, as a few benefit at the cost of the rest. An opportunistic rag-tag cabal of xenophobes, nutters, power hungry types, etc. then use this environment to establish themselves by telling the disenfranchised masses what is to blame (always simple solutions to very complex problems based on a tribal reflex of groups, some 'them' is at fault) and off she goes. This is how fascism comes to be. So again, to stop this you'd have to solve the issue of monopolism which is the reason for the widespread economic stress that enables fascisms and others like it. And to stop monopolism.. well, humanity is battling that thing for since we form societies. Major milestones in progress were religions (couple thousand years old), democracy (2500 years ago) and free markets (250 years ago). Still plenty of niches within our societal frameworks that create monopolism, which feeds fascism.. And the root cause of monopolism itself, the why individuals trying to achieve a better outcome for themselves at the cost of the rest? Simple - nature 'does it like that' for billions of years. It's natural. It works. It's these newfangled things called societies (at best a couple hundred thousand years old) that have a problem with this. And it's easy to see why - if ruthless individuals are successful to benefit at the cost of the rest - the rest will have nothing to go on as the most fittest are the most ruthless, which means they have no red lines they will not cross - this is the cause of the economic stress for the masses. Just like a cancerous cell in a multicellular organism will if successful in its quest to acquire ever more resources for it's own growth, ultimately kill the system its embedded in. So it's our individual nature that clashes with societies principles of sustainability of the whole that is the root problem. And the only counter to that I can make out is to never ever prohibit or undermine competition for any aspect of our societies, unless it runs counter to individual freedoms/existence, the habitats existence and the societies existence. But we do exactly that. Plenty of it. Which means we create many niches for the ruthless among us to exploit and cause economic stress for the rest which then gives raise to fascism.

Glad this video popped up today so I could watch it again and then share it with some people in my life that need to hear it. Thanks RU-vid and Beau ❤

Yes, I totally see what yoy are seeing there in the U.S. But I can see this happening all over the world. I can see this exact same thing going on in the U.K. with their Brexit situation, just as another example.

Also movements in France, and other Euro block nations. Our disgusting law breaker Bannon is over there assisting in the movements all the time. This is a global movement by the elites to undermine democracy everywhere. Anyone know the whereabouts of Roger Stone today???

The questions I ask conservatives who deny the party is moving toward fascism are: "Why were neo-Nazis in Germany celebrating and waving the American flag when Trump got elected? Why did Trump get endorsed by The American Nazi Party and the KKK? Why do fascist around the world love Trump?" #14 on the list is "Newspeak" an impoverished language which limits complex thought. Sad.
