Talk about your "cancel culture." Funny how this holiday is viewed with such negativity; as if instead of adding to the concept of freedom America is founded on (really "making America great" versus "making America racist"), it is taking some freedom away? What freedom is being removed from anyone by adding this holiday? What liberty is being compromised? Christmas is a far more anti-liberty and anti-freedom holiday since it celebrates a single religion in the face of many others - in a country where religion is supposed to be separate from the state. But if we tried to balance those scales, there would be the cry of "cancel culture," right?

How can someone call Juneteenth of all days a holiday only for people of color. That's awful. It's a holiday for us all to think of what happened to good, honest hard working people and to remember that what happened was a tragedy. I It's an ignorant comment to say it's a holiday for just one race or two. Frankly, I don't even understand such thinking. I don't think of MLK's holiday like that. Nor do I think such ridiculous thoughts about other holidays named for people. Wow. Have we grown so little that people can't acknowledge what happened and want to honor those that were hurt, killed, or their livelihoods ruined and more? If that is the case, we are in even bigger trouble than we thought. No one blames a given religious group for 9/11 so why are we going to limit Juneteenth to a holiday that is only for POC. Not only was it a horrific series of egregious and inhumane acts committed that day, but it hurt everyone in the long run. I like the sentiment of this, but is commemorating the citizenship act more of a kick in the teeth to Indians? As I learned it in school a lot of them at the time were pretty resentful of US rule and didn't want citizenship, they rather would have had independence or at least autonomy. Giving them citizenship was the government stopping them from being "wards of the state" more or less to make them pay taxes or stop receiving benefits like they had been. Maybe there's a big cultural significance to Indians of the Indian citizenship act like juneteenth is to Blacks that I just don't know about but if not then it might be considered tone deaf. Perhaps something like Oneida v Oneida, New York (if I remember that right) would be better since I believe that was the first time the government gave stole land and self rule back to the Indians or whatever act overturned Termination or perhaps the date of the Indian New Deal would be better?

@@joewilson3575 There is no one Indigenous point of view in central North America (just like it would be ridiculous to expect all the countries in Europe to agree on something) and opinions have changed over time in regards to citizenship. The Act isn't a moment for most Indigenous communities that I know of, and certainly not like Juneteenth is. In that, I think you're correct. (The "benefits" recieved either presently or historically are no such thing. You don't pay benefits to your landlord, you pay them rent. When someone steals something from someone, pay the person they stole from "benefits" they pay them restitution. Indigenous Americans receive no benefits from the United States, or any state agency. It is impossible to benefit from those who have colonized your land.) So yes, it's a very different thing for Indigenous folks than it is for Black Americans. My only suggestion is that you remain aware that there's a WIDE range of political opinions in Indigenous spaces. Just because whites and everyone else treats them like a monolithic block, did not suddenly make 256+ separate countries, cultures and communities start thinking like one. And thank you for being more aware of actual events (like Oneida v Oneida). Appreciate that. 👍🏽

This might be a metaphor for what people are actually scared of - white people are scared of losing their white privilege and having someone to feel "superior" over. Deep systemic change is absolutely necessary. I feel hopeful that there is progress being made. If an old white ("I'm not a racist") lady can gain more understanding, hopefully even more of the younger generation will carry it forward.

Melissa, I LOVE this idea! I think workers deserve more federal holidays, and November's election day is another that needs to be a paid holiday. Most civilized European countries give workers long paid holidays, at least 2 weeks worth. Our country could give a paid day off once a month, there are always historical events throughout the year to commemorate. One day off won't kill any companies, but it sure would help the workers that the companies rely on to make them rich.

@@kathryncasey4114 Comedian Paul Mooney died recently. Have you ever heard his thoughts on slavery or the last time white people were really happy? Edit: There’s a clip called White Folks Are Mad We Got Away. I think there’s a whole bunch of truth behind what Mooney joked about, especially for the United Daughters of the Confederacy and our confederate states who have worked tirelessly to change the narrative about the Civil War and claim it had nothing to do with slavery. They spread the lie that it was about states rights and put up all the statues and monuments celebrating confederate “heroes.” They have championed this “lost cause” idea that it was a war of northern aggression slaves were like part of the family and they have a great deal of political power.and funding still today along with preapproval of textbooks in the south and now all across America. These ladies have quietly been working since the end of the Civil War and are still at it. They’ve been very successful indoctrinating Americans with this false narrative. We have the actual history written by the governors and leaders of each confederate state with the reason they chose to go to war, but these ladies just pretended this info didn’t exist and rewrote history and they’ve gotten away with it. Anyway, Mooney’s very funny, but unfortunately, there’s more than a little truth behind it.

A comment I see concerning Juneteenth is that there still were slaves that didn't go free until later when the 13th amendment was put in place, so therefore it wasn't the day slavery was ended. Please be sure to remark that July 4th is our independence day, however the vote for independence took place on July 2nd, the Declaration of Independence being approved on July 4th, publicly reiterating the fact. But noone whines about that, because we understand the spirit of that event, it is a day chosen to commemorate our independence. Consider also that technically we declared ourselves free, but we still were fighting the Revolutionary War for several years afterwards, arguably not free yet in practice. Juneteenth is a great day to celebrate, whether it's celebrating slaves in Texas finally getting their freedom, or generally marking a moment in time to celebrate the abolishing of slavery... ...Although the 13th amendment would give a loophole for convicts to be enslaved, and convicts today are most definitely being used for dirt cheap labor, and an entire ecosystem formed around incarceration to feed into this cheap labor pool... but that's a story for another time. We got a lot of work to do but enjoy the little moments.

Manchin is holding up the voting rights bill, but he counter offered a bill which includes making election day a holiday. So hopefully it passes and we'll get that too. This world needs a lot more holidays to just sit down and decompress. Seems like tensions are running so high. Plus we need to stop commuting for global warming sake.

It is symbolic, and an attempt to wash hands, but it’s still a net win for us. The US government has declared emancipation as worthy of celebration. That makes it a hell of a lot harder to defend slavery.

I'm really proud of these parts of America's history. Those who overcame the many struggles imposed upon them. Stay strong brothers and sisters. We are all one family, whether the racists like it or not. Whoever you may be who reads this: you are my sibling and that means something to me. We can *all* have peace and prosperity, only bigotry is stopping us. The sooner we all start acting like a team, the sooner *all* of our lives will be enriched in multitudes of ways. This includes bigots. It's in their own best interest to stop being bigoted.

Indisputable facts. Classism is the original form of bigotry. And once there were different classes, the elite needed a way to control everyone, so they invented racism and monotheism, followed closely by misogyny and homophobia, and on and on until bigots all across the world would even die to keep the wealthy elite rich in their positions of power and wealth. And here we are thousands of years later. But we *are* winning over time.

Yes, Juneteenth is important, but as a black woman, making Juneteenth a national holiday was not a priority. Black people didn't ask for this. Our "betters" are throwing political crumbs to the black community. Black people have asked for an antilynching bill, police reform, Healthcare, student loan forgiveness, reparations, etc. Those things will actually help us. Making Juneteenth a national holiday doesn't help the Black community and just gives corporations another reason to have a special "sale".

I couldn't agree more. I'm a little conflicted because sure, it's nice that it's been made a federal holiday and I do think it's important to recognize it's significance but also it kinda feels like a wasted opportunity to do something actually meaningful. Ultimately this new holiday will become like many others, a day where some people get a paid day off of work and others don't

It won’t hurt them to acknowledge Juneteenth and enjoy the day off because they actively ignore the actions and conditions over a 300+ year period that led to enslaved people being notified of their “freedom” 2+ years late (when it could have happened sooner, please) and the subsequent and current years of terror and exclusion ☺️ anyways.......
