For this video we are going back to Plant City, Florida to talk to Chris Meckley of ACI Aquaculture to learn about one of my favorite type of coral family. Family of Faviidae.
This is a big family of corals that has been recently reclassified. Unfortunately we don't have all the breakdowns on the corals at the moment but we are going to tell you about what we know about the corals, how to care for them while sharing the experiences and perspective of master aquaculturist that is on top of his craft on how to create a thriving environment for this specific type of coral.
Enjoy the content and let us know which type of favia is your favorite type on the comment below!

Great video. I have a 6 yr old colony the size of a soft ball. It was the size of three golf balls when purchased. It frags itself. The side that doesn’t get as much flow the tissue will bulge and drop to the sand. I leave it until the underneath begins to harden. Once that happens i glue to a rock or plug. It grows fast for me and does have some amazing sweepers.

You're good, Chris! YES, those turbid waters are low nutrient waters, but they have suspended particles! People misunderstand that part and that is the key for so many corals found around inner reefs, including zoanthids in this hobby!!!! Zoanthids hate some of the nutrients (organic and inorganic) people think they like. Once for all: dissolved nutrients are very different than suspended particles!!! AND.. in some cases, those waters, just like in the outer reefs, COULD be washed with some terrestrial nutrient output due to currents, human pollution and rainfalls. Not to be confused! To tolerate is different than thrive! After those temporary nutrients are gone the normal situation comes back and that is the time when corals thrive. Plus... some of the nutrients in the water are not necessarily affecting the corals, if the currents keep them close to the surface, for example. That's why some people measure the water when it's the raining season and label that specific geographic area as " high nutrient". Anyways... You feed them the best of the best there!! Serious lights, particles and liquid food are the 3 ways to offer optimal nutrition for them! We can tell by the colors and colony formation! You know that "Gello thing" you noticed? It's because they are receiving the right amount of water motion and that is the key for optimal calcification rate under those lights too, along with the key rate of alkalinity available. Great job! Your work isn't in vain, my friend!!! The most important... you do all with love and share with the public! Gotta love Faviidae, after Acroporidae! :) I need to visit you one day!!!!!! Cheers!

Brother you are preaching on this reef system the truth is the truth when it comes to scientists and other people working together to figure out corals. me and my wife feel the passion that you have about coral. Thanks for the advice cuz we have a 225 reef tank doing great

@@williamgoodman2037 that's what it's all about in this hobby! We are all in this together. If you have a minute, please watch the interview video that I have done with Charlie Veron (Godfather of the corals). Person that is an inspiration to David Attenborough has said the same thing that you are saying now. We are on the same thought wave length with an remarkable man who dedicated his life for the oceans.

As much as i want to, it's hard to be quiet honest. 8 hrs of driving in one day for me is rough. Plus hours of shoot will often have me home at 1 or 2 am. But i will do my best!
