I'm not the person who asked for the book reviews, but I really enjoyed this. Now, I have many things that I can put on my wish list so my children don't have to guess when they buy me presents. Yes, a book look on the pattern writing book sounds great.

I'm bistitchual so I tend to collect Japanese pattern books and surprisingly Russian magazines which are also charted. I learned crochet charting way back in the 80s and haven't looked back yet. Recently, I've joined some FB crochet groups and am surprised at how many cannot (will not?) read crochet charts. Perhaps Knitters have an easier time as charts are, for the most part, de rigueur.

One more comment love your collection & your enthusiasm is contagious I’ll tell you there are millions of people who are visual learners in other words tutorial style is a wealth of good for people like me who barely know much about different stitches so I visit RU-vid often to learn these things. I also have some pattern books & basic how to knit & crochet but I find myself searching RU-vid frequently one book that really caught my eye is the one on how to incorporate the stitch pattern into a pattern piece all those books are Awesome I feel a bit like the character from ice age movie called Scrat looking everywhere at so many patterns & yarn & I’ve bought so much yarn & 6 projects on the go so little time so much to do haha 😂 how about you. I think your amazing to be able to write patterns it’s truly a gift 😊

Thank you so much for the book reviews! I am such a book hoarder---erm, collector. I like to read light, frivolous books on the Kindle App, but for cookbooks, spinning, crochet, knitting, gardening, health---give me good ole analog! Nothing beats the feel of a book in the hands while cozied up for a good read. Not to mention, tech gets outdated. Reading a physical book will never go out of style or need updating.

Very helpful video. As a plus size knitter, i was surprised you didn’t address size inclusivity. Clara Parke;s books are my faves. Also, cast on/bind off.

This video is from 2019 and the discussion on size inclusiveness is a relatively new conversation being had in the knitting community. Especially for third party publications like books, it is an ongoing fight to push for the extra room needed to include extended sizing. When working with a publisher, designers rarely have the final say on these sorts of issues. The only reason it has become a discussion in the last couple of years is push-back from consumers and it is great. If you look at any of my book reviews from the last couple of years you will see that I do include information on the sizes available.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but there's an english version of the 1000 Japanese Stitches book. It's called "1000 Japanese Knitting and Crochet Stitches the Ultimate Bible for Needlecraft Enthusiasts.

Thank you, I've been wanting to pick up some knitting books (I do have yours), but it's tough to wade through them all, once I start looking the day seems to just disappear. I really enjoy your videos, your enthusiasm is contagious. I do hope that you do another mkal, I did your In the Library With the Candlestick and loved it (it still needs blocking). I recently acquired the Vogue knitting book. It is great. I highly recommend it. I agree with you that it is best used as a reference book. My go to book for years was the Reader's Digest book of needlework. I don't think it is still in print, but it has everything from knitting to lacemaking. It is available as a used book.

Fabulous episode! I've been looking for knitting books and reviews on RU-vid. A book I recently purchased is from a video about essential tools for knitters. It's called The Knitters Dictionary by Kate Atherly It's a hard cover book by interweave and it's a bit bigger than a paperback novel in dimensions. It would fit in a project bag pretty well. I've just started to read it, but this set up as an a-z so if you're looking for a specific thing it's easy to look up. I'll be adding several of your suggestions to my yarnbrary this year!

Interesting, I have watched several videos on knitting libraries. All recommended Principles of Knitting. I like my copy (older version) and I seem to like it more since I have been knitting longer. It goes the distance.

I didn't ask the question but I thoroughly enjoyed this pod. I also like the addition of your friend modeling that beautiful shawl ;) seriously, cannot tell you how enjoyable the set up is for someone who has an attention span of a nat this really helps me focus on the subject at hand. I didn't notice the audio suffering, seems clear to me but I couldn't hear the squeaky chair lol. Take care!

Thank you! I was not happy with how my first attempt with the backdrop looked but I think this is better. I am still bugged by the big blank space above my visually right (actual left) shoulder. Would hanging something small and colorful there be too distracting?

I just went and checked and I don't have what I would consider a comprehensive guide to colorwork. There are multiple different types of colorwork and all of the techniques are wildly different. I will do some research and see what I can find.

Barbara, I have ordered a book from Amazon and think you should checkout. "Custom Shawls for the Curious and Creative Knitter" by Atherley and Evans". 190 pages full of assumption stuff. Explains shapes and recipes, techniques, yarns and fabric.

you can always plug in an auxiliary mic........you may have to mute the built in...or not....just plug in your old mic (if you had one) and test both ways.

I actually have a fairly high end mic, a Blue Snowball. The issue is with the audio software interface with the newest version of Windows. I've done a lot of research and a lot of RU-vidrs with both Yetis and Blue mics are having problems.

I don't have the Vogue Knitting one so I'd have to take a look at it. I already had Principles of Knitting when the Vogue update came out and I really didn't see the need to have 2 giant books like that LOL.

Thanks so much for another great video! I always learn so much! I am newish to knitting, if you don't count basics like dish cloths and scarfs. I would like to try a sweater but I have a question about positive ease.If I know a pattern has 4 inches of positive ease do I add those inches to the size I make it do you just go by actual measurements?

I'm going to be honest with you, I don't know enough about garment design to answer your question. I understand what ease is, but in regard to how it is communicated in patterns, I would just be best guessing.

That totally depends on how the pattern is written. Usually you will see a chart of sizes listed to fit bust size xx. In that case your blocked garment should be xx + 4. Sometimes the actual garment size is listed. It usually takes some careful reading to figure out which way is used. A good clue is to look at the pattern where the main bodice part is knitted and find out how many stitches are in that area and use the suggested gauge to figure out what the actual dimension of that area of the garment is. Don't use the cast on figures as a lot of garments have a change in stitch count when the edging is finished. There is usually a change in needle size there as well. Also realize that if the garment has an overall pattern that is not stockinette it will measure differently. Cables will be narrower, lace will be wider. I hope this helps you a bit.

I was quite surprised to learn what "stitch dictionary" means. It's a weird name, I think. I've always called them open work patterns. K2tog and SSK are stitches, for me what you showed are already patterns. :)

Stitch is one of those multipurpose words in knitting. There are individual stitches like k, p, ssk and the like. Then there is stitch being used as a verb as in to stitch something. And then there are stitch patterns - which is what you find in stitch dictionaries. I guess they would be more properly be called Stitch Pattern Dictionaries, but in the knitting world they are simply called Stitch Dictionaries. Or even Stitch Dics LOL!

Could you recommend anything with a left-handed focus? I am just starting to knit and want to learn correctly from the beginning, but it is getting a bit tedious having to reverse everything. I have purchased a couple of little newbie books with basic starter projects and have completed several things successfully. However, I had to go through and strike out every reference to "right" and change it to "left" and vice versa and in addition had to take a picture of the image in the book and reverse it on my phone...I do think eventually I will be able to watch and read right-handed people and mentally do the switch in my head, but I'm not there yet. Any suggestions?

I really don't have any experience with what you are referring to. But what I can suggest is a different search term. What you are doing is typically called "Mirror Knitting". Since knitting involves both hands regardless of your "handedness" the vast majority of lefties I know simply learn how to knit in the traditional way, which is moving the stitches from the LH needle to the RH needle. Reversing everything ie: mirror knitting, is less common and requires a completely different set of skills and a very detailed understanding of stitch engineering. My number one suggestion to left handed knitters is to try and learn to knit in the traditional way. Now, one thing that you might find easier is continental knitting - which involves tensioning your yarn in the left hand as opposed to handling the yarn with your right hand. I am right handed but I handle the yarn in my left hand because it works better for me that way.

I have been able to find more information by searching for "Mirror Knitting" so that was a great suggestion. I did try in the beginning (just a few weeks ago) to knit from left to right and it was fairly messy. Going right to left went much better, so I am going to soldier on with that because it makes more sense to my brain that way for some reason. I can process and visualize what is happening with the yarn when I do it right to left and get confused with the traditional direction, I don't know why. I have been sewing for years (decades, actually!) and I adapted to sewing machines which are all set up for right handed people so I can figure this out as well. It's very good exercise for my 50-something year old brain, haha!! By the way, I'm in Georgia, too. I live in Savannah, born n' bred.

I haven't spent any time investigating books on plus sized knitting so I don't have any wisdom on the subject. I specialize in accessories and technique. One of the things I love about accessories is that they pretty much fit all bodies.

I am keen to know how to undo my knitting from the bottom I’m making a wrap & almost finished but I’m now not so happy with the beginning of the project it is just plain on one side purl the other so really simple I’d love your thoughts thanks 🙏😁

So are you wanting to undo starting at the cast-on? I don't think that there is an easy way to do that. Frogging from the bind off is pretty simple but from the other end would involve a lot of tedious picking out.

If you know how much of it you want to take out, you can pick out the row before where you want to end the restart and then work backwards from there on the picked up stitches (kind of like having a provisional cast on). Or you could knit the new start and then use a kitchener stitch graft to attach to the shortened shawl.
