I've been meaning to do this video for awhile. In my recent video I discussed that a couple of my pens got scuffed from being in the case so I wanted to share the cases I have used. Hopefully it can help you to decide which kind of cases are right for you! :) Perhaps you have a favourite case already, please share below!
Thanks for watching and please don't forget to subscribe.

Thank you for your honest review of these cases. I constantly see the Galen Leather as an option for fountain pen storage, but it was not mentioned how you would need to put pressure to close the cases. Like you said, that could cause the caps or parts of the pen to crack over time! I never thought about that. I am glad I came across your video before I decided to purchase a pen case. I am now interested in the two you mentioned, the Hurlestone 3 pen case and Girologio 24 pen case. Thank you for your recommendations about what to look out for in a pen case!

Thanks so much! I'm glad it helped. I really tried to make the Galen case work but just couldn't. I like their other products though. The hurlestone is a safe bet! If only I can get my inked pens down to 3! But they have rolls too.

I have the Galen Leather cases that I keep my vintage pens in. I never zip it closed because I was worried about putting pressure on my vintage pens, but they are only used at home and not carried around. The cases are stored in a drawer, so it doesn't matter that they're not closed. My modern pens actually hang out in decorative jars most of the time. There's an inked-up jar and a couple of not-inked-up jars. I have a Rickshaw pen sleeve for when I want to carry a pen in my purse and the inside is very soft and cushy.

Glad I wasn't the only one that was worried about the case putting pressure on the pens! I just see many people forcing it to zip shut and can't imagine doing that for long periods of time. I think I'll use it to store lower end pens. Sounds like your stuff is so organized! I think I'll try the pen jar, might be easier than opening and closing a case (first world problems lol).

@@toxmot My vintage pens are all between 100 and 80 years old, and none of them were bought in mint condition. Most are celluloid or ebonite and have little cracks, dings or fleabite chips in them. I don't mind a bit of cosmetic damage because they have all been repaired and work beautifully, and besides, if I make it to 80 or 100 years old I expect that I'll have a few scuffs myself! I just didn't want to put undue pressure on them by trying to close the cases and put the already delicate old material under strain. This way they are not rattling around in the drawer because the case holds them in place, but they aren't being squished either. Jars are useful to me, because then I can really see what I have and am not tempted to buy more modern pens when I really shouldn't!
@toxmot
@toxmot 2 года назад
@@jennieeveleighlamond oh boy, fleabite chips?! I've never heard of that before in a fountain pen. I eventually will dive into vintage pens and it'll be a whole new world!😅 Those gold flex nibs look so stunning. Btw, I have put my inked pens in a small jar now. I love seeing them on my desk all the time! Reminds me to use it and write more 😊 Hope you had a lovely Sunday.
@jennieeveleighlamond
@jennieeveleighlamond 2 года назад
@@toxmot Fleabite chips aren't actually caused by fleas they're just called that, you can see the same type of little chips in vintage glassware. It's tiny round chips that you find in older, fragile materials. On some of my pens you can see it around the edge or top of the caps, or around the filling lever where there was some stress on the pen at some point and a little chunk of material popped out and was lost. They don't bother me, since the pen is still stable. I hope that the jar will work for you! I feel like it keeps me honest with myself about what I actually own and should use instead of wanting something new! I hope that your week is starting off great!

Thanks, this is very useful and good to know. I have a Rickshaw pen koozie (sp?) case with a 3-pen sleeve insert. I like it. It's good for travel. I've been wanting a big storage case, though. That Girologio looks amazing.
@toxmot
@toxmot 2 года назад
Thanks for checking out my video. I've looked at Rickshaw too and have had my eye on their pen rolls but I just couldn't settle on a design (they have so much). I really liked their Japanese print design but they sold out of those. I recommend Girologio, it's not premium leather quality but still good and decent.

Another thing I would take into account regarding storing pens long time is to not keep them in cases with tight elastic bands, because after years of continuous pressure the pens might deform. For example the Parker 45 has this problem with the cap putting pressure on the section of the pen, so you find vintage pens new in box with deformed sections. Inexpensive pens I would not mind, but pens over 2-300$ that I cherish a lot I always store in cardboard boxes with cotton material, because even leather itself can with time affect some pens due to the tanning chemicals. That being said the pen cases do look cool. I only have a Pelikan leather one for 2 pens and another roll pen case made of fabric for 4-5 pens.
@toxmot
@toxmot 8 месяцев назад
That totally makes sense - thanks for sharing your suggestion! I took my pens out of the elastics which was inside a leather case. It is probably much safer to store it in a pen drawer with felt lining or a cloth wrap. I purchased a small Toyooka case and so far my small collection of expensive pens go in there.
@kimtownsend838
@kimtownsend838 Год назад
Hi, not a fountain pen collector, but I am a crafter. A simple solution to me would be to either make some pen pouches from soft cloth or to simply wrap each pen in a soft cloth or peice of felt, before placing inside the cases without a section, surely more cost effective than another large purchase. When as you say you are not even traveling, and you have already slurged on that large storage case for all your pens. Just a suggestion 🙂

I’ve had the Wonderpens case for a while now and am really happy with it for my extra special fountain pens. To afford it, I sold my tool pen case and my zip pen case by TSL but honestly I don’t miss them much. What use is a case when you are unable to use it? Had the same experience as you where I couldn’t store as many pens as I wanted. I think in the end they are meant for smaller pens not fountain pens, unfortunately. Thanks for sharing your pen cases with us, really educational! Been thinking about a multi-pen case that’s sturdy like your large one for a while now but need to wait for my next paycheck first 😂
@toxmot
@toxmot 2 года назад
I totally get what you mean! ☺️ I think it's hard for me to sell any of my TSL cases. I think I'll think some more and if I am still not using it I will sell it too. Also need to make funds to purchase next case. And if I'm not using it then it needs a better owner. Glad to hear that you are loving your wonderpens case!

The leather pen case with the belt looks like a watch roll or watch strap roll. Straps can be steel or titanium and we hate scratches too. You'll bring 1 extra watch and 2 straps usually. The compartment on the left is for your tools for spring bar, its usually also just a thin pen shape. I can see why they sell it as a pen case. So if you like that design you can look at watch rolls with belt. That one you have looks pretty good itself

Glad I was of some help. If I use the superior labor zip case again it will only hold 3 pens not 5. You should be fine if you do not pack it full. I think lower end fountains will have no problem like lamy safari, kaweco, or brass pens, etc.

@@toxmot I definitely changed my mind on the zip case. I was looking at the cute soft fabric case you loved and would rather get something that cradles the small few higher end pens I have. I’m not too careful with my Kawecos I just toss them in my stationery drawer, but my fancy pens need protection 😓

I got a tsl wallet pencase from wonderpens to use as a card case. Somehow find myself start putting pens in it because it has three separated pen slots inside, and it's just too tempting to not use them😅 I've seen people using the other side (from the inside) to store pens, in which case the pens will scratch against each other because it's a wide pocket. But I'm using the other side only for cards, and there's no problem so far. It's a happy surprise for me. I didn't expect to use it as a pencase at all, but here I am. Really love the leather btw.

What colour did you get? I'm so on the fence about getting that tsl wallet. I would use it as a wallet and to store some pens. Still thinking about it... I wouldn't know which colour to go for.
@DL-idk
@DL-idk Год назад
I have the brown one (I think it's the same color as your tsl pencase). I've seen other people's nude version and they look good on screen too. Nude leather could be a little bit sensitive, so if you don't like uneven look probably don't go with it (I know I'm not the type to use them for example. I tend to either baby them too much to actually enjoy them or being bothered by the uneven patinas because of rough use😅). I was on the fence between the brown and the black. Chose the brown in the end mostly because I didn't have any dark brown leather in my collection and wanted to try it out.
@toxmot
@toxmot Год назад
@@DL-idk I probably would have gone for the light brown. It's sold out now but I would have passed probably anyway since I really have my eye on the yuruliku small pen case which is sold out everywhere. I used to love nude a lot more but I have a nude cover for my 5yr Hobonichi and kinda got too used to it. Been attracted to all Browns more these past few months.

@xxflipchick22xx
@xxflipchick22xx 2 года назад
@@toxmot I think I will really love the E95S, but you and another RU-vidr I follow talk about when your fingers move too close to the nib area, you can get ink all over your fingers. And sometimes when I write, my fingers start to slip down the grip section and I tend to hold my pens close to the nib for more control, so I think this might bother me. So that’s the only thing stopping me from buying it. But besides that, I think the pen is gorgeous and so classy looking.
@toxmot
@toxmot 2 года назад
@@xxflipchick22xx oh, yes that does happen but not frequently enough for me. But it hasn't been my main pen for a long time because I love it so much that I don't want to use it all the time. Only this pen does that to me. The cap is very easily scratched so that's why. If you're hand easily falls to the nib then I don't recommend it because it is easy to do that without thinking. If you spend long sessions writing then may not be good.

And wow, I’m so mad at myself for not buying it sooner! The writing experience is so different from the Vanishing Point/Decimo. It has its own writing character, and I absolutely love it. It has become my #1 journaling pen. Although my hand does slip sometimes while I’m writing, I think the pen is so light that it doesn’t happen often enough. I love how the nib writes, and the pen is so pretty. I really wish I had bought it sooner because I feel like I wouldn’t have felt the need to buy some of the other pens that I bought before it. And the other was an all leather pen case I got from Etsy. It dyed my whole TWSBI mini rose gold with yellow patches, as the inside suede lining and the leather pen loop part were a camel colour. That really made me sad. I used these two pens regularly. But I have been wondering if it was just my bad luck as I don’t seem to come across many having this kind of issues.
