Monitor switchers are a critical component of the studio listening environment. I've just changed my monitor switcher and the difference was impressive. In this video I talk about the switcher I chose.

I'm glad the Presonus works for you. When I was Edwin Coppard's engineer up in Saanichton way back in 2009 I believe, we got the first 16ch mixer in Canada from L&M Victoria and we got rid of it the same day. Wasn't really that impressed overall but it had a dead channel off the hop so back she went. I loved the egonomics of the Big Knob but it was simply *way* too coloured for my liking - and I only got it b/c one of my mentor's, Paul Baker of Bakerstreet Studios, used one when I did some work there so I thought it must be great. Spent hundreds of hours with Dave Hill's Avocet at a friends studio in San Diego and loved it, save for the noisy relays where were pretty annoying. Fast forward to 2012, where I bought a used D-Box from Gearslutz Classifieds and have stuck with it ever since. Fantastic and sonically not missing anything the Avocet had other than the great remote.

Cool. Apparently the Monitor ST is quite a step up from the D-Box, but I have heard neither. That's my buddy Ian talking.

+1 on Drawmer, I had an older Drawmer DL251 2 channel VCA compressor, with incredible features at the time (and price). It had a really subtle but nice box tone...not something you expect on a VCA compressor...subtle but real pleasant to the ear. Other brand that is a no brainer for quality and support is RME (Germany). The fastest and cleanest converters out there iic, quite the opposite of a Burl probably. RME interfaces and drivers are the best out there it seems. Somewhat in the pricerange of UA and Apogee.

Cool. I've looked at RME but have no experience with them. So glad I got the Drawmer now and am considering some of their other gear. The Burl DAC adds a very pleasing colouration to my ear, but it is much more subtle than other Burl gear I've worked with (B1 pre and B32 Vancouver).

@@EdgetoneStudios had the Drawmer multiband FET compressor (stereo) years ago, but didn't like it that much. Their basic 2 channel compressors or mic/pre's are very nice though. Good luck/have fun :) Greetings from Europe

nothing wrong with that Drawmer FET multiband though, but I would choose Drawmer if I needed hardware mic/pre's fe.

I am a big fan of the Drawmer gear, I have 7 racks of them and have 2 on my next year’s wishlist. Amazing stuff, really great quality musical gear, highly recommended 👌🏼 By the way the SPL monitor switchers are amazing too, an other great brand that I really appreciate like their vitalizer and their transient designer are really great in my opinion 😊 The Dangerous stuff is absolutely fantastic but just like the Manley gear unfortunately above my budget. Who knows if I get better at mixing and earn some money back I will definitely be glad to upgrade but for now Drawmer, DBX and SPL are my go to’s

Do you have a Drawmer 1977? If so, I'd be interested to hear about it from real world use.
@Studio22mix
@Studio22mix 6 месяцев назад
@@EdgetoneStudios Nope sorry, I don’t do tracking only mixing so 1974, 1978, some DL241’s 441 and DS241’s. But I can guarantee that the 1977 is a great channel strip, their pre-amps are pristine, the Drawmer compressors work really great and their parametric eq’s are known for being affordable and competitive with more expensive high-end brands like SSL and Manley. Definitely worth checking them out if you can at a local dealer.

@@Studio22mix No local dealers carry such cool gear, so I am left to the mercy of online ordering. ;-)
@Studio22mix
@Studio22mix 6 месяцев назад
@@EdgetoneStudios Hmm okay, don’t you have stores that send it to you with 30 days money back if you don’t like it? We have some in Europe who do that. Nevertheless I think it’s a great piece of gear, you can’t go wrong with. But it also depends on your personal preference too of course.
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 6 месяцев назад
@@Studio22mix Some do that. But in Canada, most don't stock European products like Heritage Audio, Palmer or Drawmer. So when you order it's usually considered a "special order" with no returns.

Interesting. I use a Mackie Big Knob passive, because literally all I need to do is have a volume control for one set of speakers.
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 6 месяцев назад
It would be interesting if you connected your monitors directly and compared it to using the Big Knob. If you do, let me know if it makes a difference. Of course the room you are in and your monitors, etc. all add to whether or not you hear a distinct difference.
@SeanKerns
@SeanKerns 6 месяцев назад
@@EdgetoneStudios Ha! I actually did, right after I watched your video. If there's a difference, I can't hear it. But this one is purely passive, so unless they had some badly designed electronics, I would hope it's not doing much except attenuating the volume.
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 6 месяцев назад
@@SeanKerns Well that's good. No reason to switch then.
@SeanKerns

@@EdgetoneStudios None of it is what I originally intended. I had to switch controllers because Pro Tools stopped recognizing the one I was using, and the new one did everything except monitors, so I found this. Not expensive, and it works for me.

Active vs passive. I will never have anything passive again. This is also true in the Hifi world. Ive tried multiple sources direct to power amps and such. Doesnt have the same punch as an active preamp and it always seem to rob something of the signal. Although the quality of the Coleman is probably great. Ive also got the Drawmer. Different schools of thought in the hifi world about active vs passive too, some people tout passive and neutrality over everything else but I want some vibe and the Drawmer seems plenty neutral for me, but it has smack and doesnt sound completely flat like passive can do.
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 6 месяцев назад
Yeah. I would say the Drawmer is clear and clean and I will never go back to a passive switcher. I'll save that for my bass guitars.

So then...the coleman was okay...you just preferred the drawmer instead or is the drawmer better because of the options of checking your phase and customizing. I have coleman cmc4...should i swap that out? Thanks....
@EdgetoneStudios
@EdgetoneStudios 6 месяцев назад
I think the Coleman was fine, but the Drawmer was incrementally better. There was another ergonomic issue. The Coleman's volume knob was on the left, and a little bit more of a stretch due to where my rack is located. The Drawmer had a larger knob that was on the right and much easier to reach. That helped with the decision. But then again the Coleman had a stepped knob for precise increments and the Drawmer had a continuous knob so there are always tradeoffs. I've no experience with the CMC4, but to me the Coleman stuff is top knotch.

@@EdgetoneStudios thanks so much for the reply. You have me thinking now because I totally believe in making improvements even in a small increment. I like the improvements you pointed out in the drawmer. Thanks for the video. Great job and valuable info.
