THE 4.6L 3V MOTORS ALWAYS GOT A BAD RAP! THE 3-VALVE VERSION OF THE 4.6L (AND 5.4L) WERE BETTER THAN THE 4V COBRA MOTORS! I SAID WHAT I SAID! THEY HAD AS MUCH FLOW AND VVT-MAKING MORE AVERAGE POWER THAN AN NA 4V COBRA MOTOR.

I had a 05 Mustang GT. I installed a Magnuson supercharger and shorty headers on an otherwise stock engine. Even with mild boost (about 7 psig) the performance increase was amazing. I put 100K miles on it with the supercharger, drove it every day to work. Never had a problem.

I personally think the 03 04 cobra motor that’s 4 valve supercharged forged with an iron block was awesome. Now if they made it a 5.0 from the start it would be perfect. Instead they made the coyote aluminum block thanks to sleeve tech they live somewhat. People care too much about weight vs strength. If you drag race then the 2 valve has always been king for tq production. If you race any longer than that 4 valve is king. If you want high rpm power then 4v is the way to go but that comes at a sacrifice of tq. Interesting enough what ford did with the new gen 4 with the dual tb intake added hp with and a loss of tq then added dual carbon traps for the epa 🤣.

This is why I'm a huge fan of junkyard Navi 4V motors. If you're going to open an Termi engine and replace parts to go fast, just start with the really similar engine with an extra 0.8L of displacement!

The way the 3v roller followers are stamped is probably the biggest weakness vs the 4 valve motor. It seems like many of the more successful 3v guys have backed off to milder cam specs and just turned up the boost.

Ford fixed the 3 valve heads mid year 2008, they went back to the regular one piece spark plug. The way you can tell the heads are the updated ones are by the coil boots. The heads with the one piece plug have brown boots and the two piece plugs have black coil boots.

I have far too much contempt for the 3V to consider it. Good info for those who don't hate them.

You are so correct it’s a balancing act the oem can make the goals. But at the end of the day it’s drive ability which is the goal.

I have 2. I think a simple performance gain would be to unshroud the valves ( really needs it) and raise the compression from 9.5 to 1 to a modern compression.

3 valve narrower for swaps Sad news my 45 year friend, the one I built his 454 street motor and trans Chevelle Died so there goes the Kenne Bell for his 3 valve Mustang project

Richard the ford falcon had two 5.4 engines one a 220-230kw 5.4 3v engine that had a unique alloy long runner intake manifold, plenum was in the vally and throttle body was on top like a carburettor. Otherwise a same as the triton 5.43v And a boss 5.4 4v engine that came in 260kw all the way to 315kw A few all Australian parts in those engines I own a BA falcon 5.4 3v factory 5speed car they had VVT the truck engine performed good in the sedan

Did our 5.4 3Vs have the spark plug issues that are always brought up in the US? Cam phasers? These are big items that cause everyone to shudder and call these the worst Ford engines ever made, etc when you just don't hear about them in Oz.
@MrJak427
@MrJak427 6 месяцев назад
@@gergatron7000 yep we had the spark plug separation issue but not the thread issue Easily over come if you use BP 98 fuel for awhile and use a rattle gun to remove them when engine is hot The phaser/phaser solenoid & chain tensioner issues are on all 3v engines and can be fixed with updated parts I fixed my car before it had the issues and I’m not a mechanic I think most people are just to lazy and butt hurt to figure out how to do it as they are used to push rod v8s 😂

Hi Richard, Was hoping you would get back to the Dodge 2.2 Turbo testing this month. Not much out there in RU-vid land, not even a Camshaft comparison. Cindy (Fwd Performance) has a couple of camshafts but no dyno data. Also, looking forward to seeing the results from the David Vizard ported head.

Speaking of the turbo 2.2 and VVT, I always wondered what Richard might think of the diy VVT that a guy built for his 2m2 several years ago. He did a couple videos about it and a bunch of forum posts. I have a non vvt mazda V6 that I want to do something similar with, especially after I do the cams. One of the cooler effects he noted was that fully advanced the car started super easy and idled smoother than stock.

problem with oiling and sludge great oil and frequent changes. 0-40 works unless VVT then use 0w-what the manual says for the top number Oil has changed since factory speced Motor did not like deferred maintenance You would have think FORD would have learned from the Y block...

4 and 2 valve seems to be a bit more reliable then the 3 valve however that just been my experience. I do like the 3 valve when it runs well. Depends on the use one plans

Awesome videos, I’m a 3v diehard!! I’m building a teksid, already had the short block, and heads done. What kind of head gaskets should I get. I have comp phase 2 blower cams, ported heads. I’m running a 2.3 TVs supercharger on e85nothing crazy, I still have stock size valves. All Manley, forged crank . What kind of head gaskets would you recommend? Width/ brand? Thank you sir.👍

Is there anything to do with the performance aspects of the 5.7 TIP. should you use better heads and a cam swap ? what about the transmission and the rear gearing.
@joshreynolds729
@joshreynolds729 6 месяцев назад
You should start with brand first. Chevy or dodge? The reason being each part is different. Also what year? And make? And lastly what are your goals vs your exceptions based on your wallet?

@joshreynolds729
@joshreynolds729 6 месяцев назад
@@darrylmonroe802 well those motors were really restricted for what they were. Had an 82 Camaro with the 305 when I was in high school. You can basically do anything mods that you would do to any old school Chevy small block -Heads cam intake carb headers full exhaust if it’s not fuel injected but I’m pretty sure it is so add to fuel system and injectors. Trans probably don’t last either so built trans and a shift kit/ rear posi gears dep bring on the type of race helped. Pretty sure nothings forged internally making boost out. 305 is a small engine, typically you want more cubes having 2 valves. This isn’t to say you can’t spin it faster under boost to make it up but you’re building it. So again I ask what are your goals? My advice if you want a faster car to race is to buy an ls motor or an older big block and build that. For a fun little street car to commute with the 305 will do. 5.7l translates to 350 ish cubic inches. 5.0l translates closer to 300-305 cubic inches.
