Sean, the horticulture guru at The Gardener's Center in Darien, CT, talks about which pots can take the winter elements and which pots need to be brought in or protected. He also has advice on HOW to protect them.
He puts plant pots into four groups: terracotta, cast stone/concrete, fiber glass/lichen fiber and finally, plastic.
Essentially, it's not the cold temperatures that can damage your pots; it's the precipitation they absorb or contain, followed by freeze/thaw cycles. Beware!
All Sean's advice can be applied to garden statuary and bird baths. Note what they're made of and where they're placed in your garden.
Pro tip: Be sure to keep the drain holes in your pots clear!

This is a criminally undersubscribed channel. Such useful information. Any gardener in the northeast should be subscribed to this channel. Thanks for all your efforts

This was fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I am in zone 5A and use a lot of pots in my garden. Usually, I either empty them or put them under cover over winter, but have lost a few through trial and error. Your explanation was so clear about the vulnerability of the different types of pots and how best to handle them in winter, and it will serve me well in the future. I also agree with the earlier comment, that gardeners are truly missing out, and I hope you continue to share with us and your channel grows quickly. I found you through your Agastache video, which was also incredibly informative and useful. It is my favorite perennial, also. Thank you, again!!
