Sukkari is my favorite. It's so soft and gooey and sweet and goes perfectly with a cup of bitter Arabic coffee. The sweetness of the date and the bitterness of the coffee balance each other out perfectly
@@mordecaibloodwings Can't speak for everyone, but when I was in Umrah at the beginning of this Ramadan, the hotels were providing Sukkaris dates. They're super gooey, caramel-like, and extremely sweet. Paired with the Arabic coffee and it's an amazing way to open your fast. I'm missing Mecca/Medina already. As for "bringing back", most people try to bring back Ajwa dates from Medina (which is what I did), since they're expensive everywhere else.
Iam from Panjgoor, a city in South Western Balochistan neighbouring Iran. Mentioned below are some of the dates that we grow and each of them has their own unique taste and textures. 1. Kaarubah ( a little grape like date filled with honey like juice when it ripens, not much to chew but one could eat ton of them). 2. Aabdandan ( Aab meaning water and dandan meaning teeth, actually its very soft even if it's not ripe. Dissolves instantly in your mouth and super sweet) 3. Mozzati ( A near cousin of Muzafati from your video) 4. Sabzo ( consumed well before ripening because it's way more crunchy and Juicy when it halfway through and gets its green/bluish colour) 5. Redag ( when ripe, it's texture is a little bit hard like a refrigerated Mars chocolate and way less sweet from other dates of our town, my personal favourite. A bit rare too.) 6. Alina ( A round yellow and medium sweet date it ripens too late, well near winters so it's a fresh date when there is none other.) 7. Rabai ( creamy and sweet flavour) Others 8.begum Jungi 9. Sor 10. Shakar. 11. Dundairy 12. Zard .
@@retrogamer2503 haha since gully is a Pakistani (like me )and my comment was directed towards him , I didnt felt i needed to mention Pakistan also. Plus, anyone with little geography knowledge would know from where I am :-)
@@Mir.Hammal.Baluch Believe me, some people are really bad at geography, but I guess that does mean that you comment only gets across to the more educated ones here. :)
Wow, I was about to comment about Panjgoori dates, but I never thought I'd see someone else do it. I'm from Pangjoor myself, but I haven't heard of all of these since I grew up in Karachi. Thank you for sharing this information!
For those wondering, different species of dates can be grown in different parts of the world. It's not like, for example, medjool can only be grown in cali. Additionally, if you're gonna try it for the first time, make sure to split them in half with your fingers to check for bugs(usually about 1/25 has bugs). Finally, i think the best way to describe the flavor of a date is; a rich, mature thick honey, slightly simmered with a bit of molasses and smoked flavor, occasionally dabbled with a floral accent. However this can change depending on the date you chose, however i find that this description is best applicable when enjoying a medjool. :)
They definitely are not native to California. They came from the middle east. Mexicans come up and pick those during harvest season during the month of August. And it's scorching hot 115 degrees probably more right on the border of Arizona, California and Mexico. I don't know how they do it. I've seen them at work. Mind blowing.
Not true, medjool or as we call it in Morocco Mejhoul, are actually originated in Morocco, exactly in Tafilalet oasis valleys. The Mejhoul date variety was introduced to the US in 1927 by an American farmer who had traveled across Morocco in search of the best date palm to import to California.
Sukkari any day of the week! I keep the dates in the fridge until they are hard and cold. There's just this feeling that I get whenever I bite into a hard cold date. Having them for Iftar after a hot day is an experience that never gets old. The dates quickly quench the thirst and that sweetness is second to none. I don't find the other dates that sweet. I randomly crave something sweet and Sukkari is my go-to. It is healthy and you only need to eat 1 or 2. Amazing dates
In Egypt there's 2 types of fresh dates that I love one is deep red and sweet, it's called Zaghloul dates (بلح زغلول) it also kinda dries your mouth, but you get used to it 😅 and the other is brown and even sweeter, it's called Amhary dates (بلح أمهري) and it's not crunchy, it has a thin strong peel and super gooey on the inside
It's so funny to me how you always manage to eat the fruit when it's not ripe 😂 The fresh dates from what I remember in my childhood look very different when ripe. The skin can almost be peeled like it's not sticking to the date and the inside turns to this brown carmel translucent color and it gets really soft it immediately melts in your mouth and is super sweet . It used to be one of my favorite dates when I was a kid easily the softest dates ever

I never liked khajoor (dates) growing up, but until I went to Madina & Makkah in 2021 to do my Umrah I started to enjoy eating them. The dates fresh in Saudia Arabia - particularly Ajwah dates hit so different. Ajwah is definitely my favourite there. We went to a date farm and had Ajwah fresh and it was insane how soft and melt-y they were in your mouth. Climate really does impact dates. Eating them in their heritage climates is truly important to get the full date experience.
When describing the flavor of a date, you can use words such as sweet, caramel-like, rich, and earthy. You may also describe the texture as chewy and soft, with a slight nuttiness. Additionally, you can mention any notes of honey, molasses, or vanilla that you taste. The flavor can vary depending on the type of date, so it's important to specify which variety you're describing.
ive only had mazafati and medjool dates honestly (although i prefer mejdool tbh) but ive heard from my parents that before they left iraq, they used to have multiple birhi date trees and that these dates were better than any variety they've had since coming to the west. the fresh date you had looks a lot like the fresh birhi dates they described to me ^-^
@@GoldenGully pov: your me whos only eating medjool dates MANNN I WANNA KNOW WHAT THEY TASTE LIKE anyways waiting till 8pm be like: (if you know you know)
Medjoul or as we call it in morocco majhoul is originally from tafilalt a region in central east morocco It's customary here to welcome guest with majhoul dates and milk 😊
Thank you for this contribution i was searching for it ! Really sometimes we fool people throughout wrong information. Majhoul is a purely moroccan dates verity
Broo deglets are amazing. The one you tried didn't look like premium quality :) when you take a ripe deglet from its branch, they're so soft the pit literally stays behind on the branch and you end up with a pitless date Edit : good thing you got the madjool from California. In Europe most of these dates are imported from a country we prefer to boycott in solidarity to our brothers who "live" there.
I fell in love with Sukkari dates when I went for Umrah. The hotels give them to you with some strong, bitter tea. When they're "fresh", soft, gooey, and super sweet I can eat a dozen easily. Before trying Sukkari dates, I was indifferent to dates my entire life.
@@bassam_salim thanks for the info. Never knew much about Qasim province. I've been to a date market in Madeenah and they brought out the Sukkari that just came in and I'm pleasantly surprised by the sweetness, and I'm not a sweet tooth either. It's hard to find that good quality of Sukkari after probably that due to longer time it takes for shipments.
If the fresh dates are making your mouth dry, then they aren't ripe enough. Fresh ripe dates are lovely, with a gentle juicy sweetness to them and the crunch makes it very satisfying to eat.
I grew up in Saudi before moving to Toronto as a kid. I used to go back every year though to visit up until a few years ago. So I’d say I’ve had some of the best dates around Alhamdulillah. You got Ajwa absolutely right. It is incredibly rich and sweet Subhanallah. Dark honey/molasses is spot on. I will say this .. the quality over there in Saudi Is on a different level. You won’t find them to be as hard as you found this one. They’re quite soft and chewy with a bite. For me personally, good quality Sukkari is on another level. I can almost bet if you tried that, It would be your favourite. It’s hands down the most delicious. Subhanallah. I describe the taste as an intense caramel, with notes of honey and nuts. Beautiful. And the texture is perfect as well. It’s not hard but has just the right amount of bite. The sukkari we get here in the GTA, is just not on the same level unfortunately. I hope that helps :)
Here in albania 🇦🇱 deglet dates are the most popular ones and almost everyone eats those. Recently also sukari and mazafati dates have been brought and now we get mazafati (in my family) and i just love them. I have also tried sukari and they are soooo good ❤
I am Algerian and yes our dates have the taste of caramel, i am always very careful eating them because they're sweet and addictive lol my second favorite is saudian dates they're really good
Medjool dates are now grown in various parts of the world, but they were originally cultivated in Morocco 🇲🇦, where they have been an important part of our local cuisine for centuries.
Whenever I was deployed to Jordan, I was introduced to dates. Nothing I’ve found since being back to the states can replicate the sweetness of the dates over there. Same goes for the deliciousness of the food. One of the most beautiful countries of all time, undoubtedly
@@GoldenGully it's sweet and has a very soft texture to it (almost like date paste). We used to freeze them and then just before iftari time defrost them enough so it was still very cold but soft too. It tastes best when it's cold for iftari in my opinion, especially after a long hot and sunny day.
@@GoldenGully In Iraq they’re called Ruttab, رطب and as the comments said. When they ripen enough that they become brown soft and quite mushy. Make them cold but not frozen and they’ll taste like heaven.

As much as I love Ajwa, since I grew up with Medjool always being served, that will always be the baseline that I compare other dates to. Medjool dates are also much softer than the other dates that I've tried.
There are dates from Algerian desert that are quite big, really soft and super sweet. I've had them only once because i had a neighbor from the desert who gave me one
there are two ways to eat the fresh dates. some like to eat it the way you did for us and others like myself prefer to eat it when it's a bit more riped meaning the fresh dates become softer almost like the feel of a very riped peach. not too riped cause if you leave the fresh dates to ripe for too long, it will spoil very quickly. fresh dates will take about three to seven days to ripen, depending on temperature and desired ripeness. i prefer to eat fresh dates after the medjool. i'll eat medjool for ramadan and fresh dates whenever. ajwa dates are mostly used for arabic sweets especially in the sweets called mammoul. you should try them! they're like soft cookies stuffed with dates inside of them.
Grass is one of the most common and abundant types of plants on Earth, and it plays a vital role in the ecosystem. It is a member of the Poaceae family, which includes many different species that vary in size, shape, and color. Some grasses grow to be several meters tall, while others are small and inconspicuous. They can be found in a wide range of habitats, from forests and meadows to deserts and wetlands. One of the most important functions of grass is that it serves as a primary source of food for many herbivorous animals, such as cattle, sheep, and deer. In fact, grass is so essential to many grazing animals that they have evolved specialized teeth and digestive systems to help them efficiently extract nutrients from this tough and fibrous plant. Grass also plays a crucial role in preventing soil erosion, especially in areas where there is little vegetation. The dense network of roots that grass develops helps to anchor the soil in place and prevents it from being washed away by rainfall or blown away by wind. Moreover, grass is effective at absorbing and storing water, which can help to prevent flooding and erosion during heavy rainfall. Another benefit of grass is that it contributes to the oxygen cycle by producing oxygen through photosynthesis. This is important for maintaining a healthy atmosphere, as oxygen is necessary for the survival of many different types of organisms, including humans.Additionally, grass provides a habitat for many different species of insects, birds, and small mammals. The tall grasses of meadows and prairies offer shelter and nesting sites for many species of birds, while the underground burrows created by small mammals such as rabbits and groundhogs provide homes for other animals. In conclusion, grass is an essential and often underappreciated component of the natural world. It provides food, shelter, and oxygen for countless organisms, and helps to prevent soil erosion and flooding. The importance of grass in the ecosystem cannot be overstated, and it is essential that we take steps to preserve and protect this vital resource.
My favorite is “khalas” its sweet and sticky, it’s always packaged tightly in bag We sometimes fry it with a bit of butter (NOT OIL) then dip it in fresh creme, so good 😋
Chatgpt says: Date flavor is sweet, rich, and caramel-like with a hint of honey. The texture is chewy and slightly sticky. When fresh, dates have a more tender, slightly juicy texture, while dried dates are firmer and have a more concentrated sweetness. Some varieties may have a nutty undertone, while others may exhibit more complex flavors with hints of cinnamon or toffee.
Deglet if one of my favourite, it is so sweet it taste like honey and when you drink it with milk on the end of a day of ramadan what a amazing experience! The sugar of the date get mixed with the milk incredible
Dates have a rich, sweet flavor with notes of caramel, honey, and brown sugar. They often have a slight nuttiness and a subtle, fruity undertone. The texture is soft and chewy, which complements their deep, syrupy taste. Some varieties may also have a hint of spiciness or a molasses-like undertone
Medjoul dates are one of the best things I tasted. It's so delicious, addictive and that bite is irresistible, how chewy it is! I'm always eager to dig in right away whenever I buy them. I'm happy I got introduced to them, wish that I could buy them more often but they are so worth it, when you think about the whole process behind them. Keeping them in the fridge makes it even better I think. People that haven't tasted Medjoul dates and say they dislike the date taste have just missed something really incredible. Ooh I can't have enough of them, really love them!!
If i HAD to describe it, dates are quite mellow and rich due to their blunt and subtle taste and gooey texture. This is accompanied by an all-round light sweetness. Not something one tends to binge, but rather a pallete cleanser and initial starter. This opinion may be due to the wide usage of dates for initially breaking the fast.
Sukkari and the "traditonal date" are my favorites. Idk maybe the traditional are called the khudri, but sometime the ones we get are a lot smoother and juicer. Pretty sure they have a process to make them better or something. Also, why eat a fresh date?? We eat the fresh dates as half and half. Half fresh and half date to cut down the sweetness. Beautiful food.
I love this. I had no idea how many different types there are and probably more right? Dates are so amazing. I have to limit myself to a few a day but could eat way more.
Nothing beats fresh dates fron Bahrain, they're not eaten liken that. They're usually left in the sun for a week or 2 which enables them to ripen into really sweet dates
So like how dates taste like are that they have a distinct sweetness flavor and slight hints of the taste of caramel. And also, notes of butterscotch, toffee and cinnamon.
people back in the day use to cross the desert, eating nothing but dates and surviving the long journeys because dates are so plentiful and nutritious, A little date goes a long way,, they pack a nutritional punch, I’m from America and I never go without medjool dates. I get the ones from Arizona From my local grocery store in another state and they are super sweet, juicy gooey soft unless they aren’t fresh, then they’ll dry out, I’m very athletic. Have been for a long time and they’ve been giving me what I need as a recovery snack and or pre-snack for energy. Lotta fiber very medicinal, a lot of potassium lotta nutrients in general,, dates are super nutritious.
Usually when I eat fresh dates, I let them ripped much more. The color will change a bit and they’ll get more sweet and juicy? Not that juicy but not drying etc. They’re really good when they’re ripe
@goldengully Madjool or Majhool as we call it in Morocco is a Moroccan type of date Not Californian ... They just grow it there because we have the same climate
My favorite is Ajwa then Sukkari. Medjool is the classic because it is the most common and easily grown around the world. Fun Fact about Ajwa is that they are grown is Madinah and were loved by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
My father used to know each of which in details and he used to enjoy shopping dates! May ALLAH rest his soul in heaven 💔 Btw Sukari dates name comes from (Sukar) which means Sugar in Arabic thats because its really taste sweet
For me personally i get some oreos , take out the cream , smash em then roll a ball of what i think is called date paste (معجون تمر) on the oreos and its done
for me ajwa has a bit of bitter, smoky(?) flavor to it.. i think it's because im grown and i don't really enjoy sweeter dates like i used to.. ajwa is the choice.. but it's pricey because people say it's the date that rasulullah love the most.. yea it's a bit expensive for me.. sukari is the cheapest one, but sukari in my country is darker, jammy-er almost too soft and sticky and not brown like that you have, i think it needs a lil more drying
The fresh dates is the best one if you watied for it to ribe a little bit its gonna be half soft half crispy Or you can wait a little longer for it its going to taste the sweetest We grow them at home and they are my favorite
that fresh one looks like the dates we have here in iraq called barhi but in its khilal phase , we also have multiple varieties of dates like khistawi and zahdi and khidrawi
I remember when I did the Umra years ago in Mecca and Medina I bought a bunch of these Note : the black and hard one is to say to have « Allah » writing on it and my favorite was Sukkari, I miss it so much would love to get them from the internet watching this video Also I’m in France so I guess we’re eating mostly Algerian dates, it looks a lot like the American one you prefer
Sukari are my fave. If you find them fresh (usually in the fridge or freezer section), they are golden bites of Caramel decadence! Try scooping dates with labneh, cream or even tahini!
"As an AI language model, I don't have the ability to taste or experience flavors myself. However, if we're speaking metaphorically, the taste of a date might be described as sweet, rich, and complex. Dates are known for their natural sweetness and have a caramel-like flavor with hints of honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg. They can also have a slightly chewy texture and a subtle earthy undertone. Ultimately, the taste of a date can vary depending on factors such as the variety of date, the ripeness of the fruit, and any additional flavors or ingredients that may be paired with it." -ChatGpt
My top 3 is 1. Sukkari cuz they taste like glazed donuts, 2. Ajwa cuz they dark, rich, and taste like blueberries, 3. Medjool cuz they classic jammy and I always eat them frozen
As a Saudi my life with dates has been sagai sukari ajwa (barely) and a new type not sure though called jalaxy which I think is closely related to sukkari and about medjool I think it’s a date that can be grown in multiple regions not like the others and there is also ilkhlas like the sura which i think is a method since you always see it covered in some molasses like syrup though I’ve never seen the last 2
The ones in California aren't native to the USA they were brought there and were cultivated. Most of them grow in Winter Haven, California. The people who cultivate and harvest the dates are Mexicans that are brought in during August when they are harvested. I've eaten them straight from the date palms after they were picked. They are delicious and high in sugar 😋😋😋😋
I love sukari but i bought a lot of sugai from saudi because i just loved them for some reason they felt balanced to me.. I got medjool too, since everyones favourite is medjool i prefer sugai and sukari.Sukari being when i am in mood of sweet and sugai when i want balance. My cousin got a box of Jumbo Medjool few weeks ago and it was pretty expensive 15$/500 grams and had only 17 dates.Usually you can buy medjool at 5 and 10$ per 500g but these 15$ ones were insanely big and they had huge amount of wetness inside and they were very sweet than 7$ medjool i had bought and they were too mushy and didnt even needed a bite and the skin was amazing and black. All in all of you love sugai/ sukari : Your sweet and have more of artistic brain. If you love ajwa : Your Normal and you love work. If you love medjool: Your the balanced person.
Ajwa is my favourite type of date because to me it has a balanced honey like flavour. As for what dates taste like, they taste like dark chocolate filled with honey and then dehydrated and given a melt-in-your-mouth but hard shell texture.
it's pretty difficult to explain the flavour but if i wanted to explain it to someone i would say it has few components that can help like it's a bit sweet and earthy and also it's texture helps in the flavour but i think it has similar taste to a food most of the people had so it's similar to date.
The last one is the shape of any type of dates before they are ripe. Its taste defrent according to the type. For example, the sukary fresh diet is dry and not sweet. But anthor type called Barhi is very tasty, sweet and not dry at all.
Ajwa, Medjool, and ripe fresh dates are my fav (I've been eating medjool since I was kid so ajwa is a nice change). The fresh dates you ate weren't ripe! You should wait for them to brown a little (mushy but no overly mushy) and they taste the best refrigerated!!!
I once bought fresh dates from a vendor in saudi where they store it in sort of an ice box, which i assumed they froze it first, and its super refreshing, like it almost had a texture of a grape, and it doesnt dried your mouth like a freshly picked ones (but i coud be wrong about the type of the dates they're selling tho)
if you ever go to Madinah, the ajwa in the date stores are so soft and moist. They dry out over time, that is why you had the hard outer layer and soft inside. If you get the right ones, the entire date is soft.
My favourite is called Talees. It is Libyan dates. It is my typical description of taste of dates. We have many other types of dates different from what you have shown in your video. Next favourite is Deglet which is common in Magherb countries.
Medjoul is from Morocco and it's called Mejhoul which means in arabic (the unknown) , it's originally from Tafilalet region in Morocco it was taken by Americans and cultivated in California.
I was given a box of dates from Morocco and they're quite different from the medjool kind I'd normally buy in Ireland. A lot dryer and light colour to them & not so sweet and sticky. Still they're very nice. I think they are sagai from your video but the box doesn't appear to say.
I grew up eating sukkari and I love how sweet it is and when I was younger I used to live in saudi so every time we would go to macca in Ramadan and we would always buy some there and go back to my grandparents house which was in macca and sometimes we would make a date cake i recommend it its nice
@GoldenGully, My brother, you should've tried the last one i.e. the fresh/unripe one first 😂 I'm feeling a bit offended that there’s no Mabroom and Maryam dates here, two of the best. However, Ajwa is my favourite and I will always consider it as the king of all dates. No wonder it’s mentioned in the hadith too. Because of it being dry on the outside and juicy on the inside, it's super easy to store anywhere you like.
my mother loves ajwa but you should totally try ruthob! It's another form of fresh date but more ripe and not sundried. It has the light sweetness of sundried date and the crunchiness of unripe fresh date
Deglet nour is the best date for me (i tried many other dates around the world including yours) : seems that the deglet noor you choosed is the super low quality one . By the way Medjoul is originated from Morrocco eventhough it has been reproduced in the middle east and other parts of the world
