Lets Change 14.9 x 28 R1 Tire By Hand- Case 430

If you are thinking of changing a 55 year old tractor tire by hand, this is the video for you. Or if you just want to see an old man fighting an inanimate opponent like an aging wrestler in the ring, this is the video for you. If you think spending $50.00 or more on a repair you are capable of doing yourself is too much to spend, this is the video for you.
There's just something about guys like me that refuse to pay for something they can do themselves...call it being a cheapskate, that's ok. Call it frugal, that's even better. Call it what you want but it's nice to not rely on others unless all other options are exhausted. So...today we get ready to fix the tire that's not been off the rim since the day it was assembled in 1968.
So today the age old technique of breaking down a tire by use of a ramp and truck is implemented, followed by the use of standard tire changing tools to remove the tire and tube from the rim. The follow-up video will reveal the damage sustained to the rim by the leaking fluid over the years as well as the steps to stop the deterioration and protect its interior surface prior to reassembly.
There are those that may say....'my time is worth more'....then drop it off at a tire shop then spend the next two hours watching a ball game or a NASCAR race or sit on a barstool and suck up a few beers with a buddy. But I've always wondered just who paid them for that 'wasted' time... remember, 'time is money'.... at least when you engage in this activity of changing your own tire there is a realized savings of what is NOT spent in time and money for the two trips to the tire shop plus the repair costs.
Now all you ball fans or racecar fans and even beer drinkers, don't get your feathers all fluffed up...I think it's good to enjoy relaxing stuff like that. I ain't picking on you, that comparison was just to make a point. Heck I even watched a ball game or two, but its been at least 30 or 40 years ago...maybe more. Bob Gibson was the Cardinals pitcher at the time....Curt Flood was centerfield....Tim McCarver was the rookie catcher....but I digress. But one thing I have never done was watch a single NASCAR race. But I HAVE changed dozens of car, truck, implement and tractor tires by hand over the years.....and never drank a single beer doing it. So the underlying message (if there is one) is for you to do you and I will do me. LOL Enjoy and as always take the written commentary lightly....my thoughts and a buck fifty will get you a cheap coffee. #Case, #tires, #tractorrepair

Wendell, you are a clever rascal! Driving a truck up a ramp leaning on the tire to break the bead. I never would have thought of that! You had quite the wrestling match with that inner tube getting it out. I always learn something useful from your videos. Thanks for sharing!

Wendell, I have done the same thing countless times in the field, while we were working the tractors. My father-n-law and I changed 3 rears on 3 different tractors one hot july day. I KNOW the feeling of " I'm kinda tired", haha. I carry with me a cut bias ply tire to pull the tubes out. I just cut two larger holes on each end and cut the sidewalls off. I made it about 3ft long and flat, and just wrap it around the tube, hook to loader and off and out of the tire it goes. It saves your back, ALOT. A couple of buckets and a "converted old time tire pump" will refill the fluid in the tires, but it takes a while. Field repairs, gotta luv em'. Great Vid! I wonder how many young people know how to break down a tire by hand, ie...tractor, truck, car or whatever? haha. Great lesson to know.
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 Год назад
Great comment Michael. Now you taught me something with the trick of using the loader to remove the tube. What a good idea !! Thank you for that. I will implement that idea on the next one. Now I gotta tell ya, I have never done three in one day !! Wow, what a string of bad luck for you guys. Especially on a hot day with no shade !! We always used one of the heavier row crop tractors front end to break 'em down. A short 2x8 for a ramp, use the row crop to easily turn to follow the contour of the rim to break 'em down. I am lucky enough to have an old tire changer for 17's on down, but the bigger ones are all by hand yet. I thought it'd be kinda cool to show some of the younger guys or maybe some city guys how we do it. Thanks for the awesome comment again.

A couple years ago I helped the Much Older Brother mount two 15.5 x 38 radial rears on his Farmall 400 LP. Now those were a treat for us both. Yep, a bit of a struggle, but we won out in the end !! I think he was at least 79 at the time. LOL He's ALMOST as tight as me !! We've never used the bumper jack like you describe, but what we usually did was use a short 2x8 and run the front tires of one of the Massey Harris 44 tricycle tractors up and onto the tire, then follow the contour of the rim a foot or two.... I still did that here with ALL my tires until I come up with an FMC pneumatic tire machine for the 17'' tires on down. Thorns are a KILLER. They will break off in the tire and after you fix it, still work their way back in to poke another hole !! Not all the time, but enough of the time to be real aggravating. Take care my friend.....btw, I changed a 15'' tire on the wood splitter just yesterday. Dang thing blew out the sidewall.

It's not that hard. The larger 38's seem to be a bit easier than the smaller 28's because the radius to stretch over is bigger. I've done many, many of them both over the years. The longer tire spoons you have the better. You'll need the leverage at different points. Good ones are expensive, but they don't bend or break. I broke the tip off of one of the cheap ones doing this tire here. Good luck, and remember you can always stop and take it in to a shop if necessary.

Yes, I've done that in the past and I've also reinstalled them back on the rim while on the tractor as well. Most of the time though I do them laying on the ground, preferably concrete.
