well l got a bit of snow to move and thought great, an excuse to buy a massive machine that wont fit on any of my trailers, well lets see what l got myself into,
This has been a very VERY difficult video for me to watch. Just simply because I want to help! I grew up in a Case 580 series backhoe. My dad was "the guy" that people called for dangerous and intricate digging in my area. He literally has tens of thousands of hours in the seat of a Case 580 series backhoe. All the way from his first 580B up to the last 580 super K he still owns that runs awesome yet. I too can run it but my dad is a true artist with that machine. Always made the difficult jobs look like a kid playing in a sandbox. I love fixing these backhoes up, rebuilding the cylinders and replacing worn pins and bushings. Even at 6600 hours I believe this super L will be a great machine for you!
My dad started with an Ford 801 Powermaster backhoe back in the early 60’s. Sold the Ford and bought an International Harvester backhoe in 1975. He sold the IH and bought a Ford 555 backhoe in the late 90’s. He was an awesome backhoe operator and made digging with his backhoes look easy.
@@edwardkane3237 it's an amazing thing to watch for sure!! Especially for a kiddo that looks up to his dad so much. I remember hours of watching him run that thing until I was old enough to get in the trench and run the manual backhoe(shovel). Heck to this very day if I'm digging something that's kicking my butt I'm not above giving the old man a ring and have him run the machine and me run the shovel. At 73 he's not as smooth as he once was but I'd still put him up against any of the other operators in our area. If your dad has worn out as many backhoes as my dad has, which it appears he has, then I can assume that your father's story is much the same as my dad's.
Instead of clipping a hot lead to the probe of your 12v test light, disconnect the ground from the testlight and put the 12v on the ground side of the test light, this will effectively put the light bulb in the circuit and "current limit" what you are doing. The way you are doing it is basically bypassing the fuse and amps can jump to infinity. But, if instead, you are running the hot through the test light, that bulb will always provide enough resistance that you will not cause your connectors to glow like you did in this video. The way you are doing it (putting a hot on the probe side) allows the current to jump to infinity. The way I am saying will always current-limit you to that of the lightbulb. A dead short cannot happen through a light bulb. At worst, the bulb will blow.
I really liked the red alligator clip in parallel to provide 12 volts all he had to do was connect the alligator clip of the test light to bat pos and provide current limited voltage to the circuit under test. Scary electrical troubleshooting.
Sorry, but this is a "shake hands with danger" moment. This is not light duty suburban stuff, this is industrial earth moving/construction equipment and he doesn't even have a manual. What he was doing with the electric is insane. What he SHOULD have done was connect the 12v to the ground (and disconnect the ground side of the trouble light from the battery) and then used the probe end to put power to those wires. By doing it that way, the bulb becomes a current limit device and a fuse. Bypassing fuses is a horrible idea. At one point when Mustie was putting power to the connector, the connector started glowing.
He's not a snow flake. He obviously has knowledge. No reason to make fun of knowledge... unless you are a fool and a moron. Learn from those with experience. Isnt that why you watch mustie1??? Darren is not a God. He can learn, too.
WHEN cylinder RODS ARE BADLY MARKED THE CHROME IS REMOVED AND SPRAY WELDED AND POLISHED AND RE-CHROMED,, IF THE Rod is really bad we make a new rod or barrow, the seal kit for them out rigger cylinder are $180 CND dont get them from the dealer, metric seal kits are in the thousands witch are found on a lot of off shore truck booms the folding boom type, them blue splice connectors should never be used, more cars an trucks have burned up from shops using them to install remote start kits, the blade cuts many copper strand and it heat up until it starts burning the blue blastic, then sets the wwhole wire harness a flame and spreads really fast, for years my 5 ton dump truck would shut off driving down the road out of the blue and start back up on its own as the transmission would keep turning the engine over, i could never ind the problem until one day smoke came pouring out from around the steering column, i stopped disconnected the battery, dropped the column down to find one of them connectors all burnt up and about 6" of the harness, my ex wifes car burnt to the ground at 5am one 40 below winter morning after she used her after market car starter witch had them connectors on it,, just wish she was in it
Hey Mustie, the bottom left button on the rhs guage panel (6 switches) operates the front axle engage or disengage. Recommend to only use 4 wheel drive in first or second gear and 2 wheel drive on hard surfaces at speed. The interior dome light switch is the top switch to the left of the steering wheel. Good luck with your project, i'm enjoying the ride along.
I hope he reads your comment. I thought when he powered up the 4 wheel drive switch right before he took the camera off, it lit up. That would indicate a servo is working. Get knowledge. I hope it helps him. 👍
Watching electrical diagnostics is always cool. It also always seems like when there are a bunch of random electrical problems on a machine it can usually be one small issue. Like a shorted wire, a wire hooked up wrong, or a bad ground.
Quite an ambitious project there Darren, I know where you can get an early Vietnam era Hughes helicopter real cheap, if you think that backhoe is a nightmare crack into a chopper...insane! Good luck buddy and Merry Christmas.
Hey Mustie1, thanks for the videos! I thought I would share an experience that I had with a Honda Hippo (Japanese Domestic Market) Generator. I tried the usual, carb clean, ultrasonic cleaner, low oil cut off switch bypass.... would run for about 5 seconds and die.... Was driving me mad, I couldn't figure it out... one last RU-vid check before it goes in the heap... I found a video of a generator with a clogged exhaust and thought that this couldn't be my problem... So i went through the carb again..... same trouble.... then figured it was worth the time to remove the muffler just by some chance (very small I thought) and it ran like a champ. for some reason I have never seen this happen in your videos and you are the GURU in my eyes. Just thought you could add the exhaust in one of your trouble shooting vids, Im sure the masses would find it useful. Thanks again for your time and dedication to all of us. Scott in Japan.
When I was a kid I spent my summers in Italy, up in the hills of Tuscany. One of the house staff was a funny Swiss chap who drove an old Renault R4. Sometimes he wouldn't drive it all the way up the farm track to the house but park just off the track a few hundred metres below. One evening he walked off to the car to go home, only to return ten or 15 minutes later, asking for help because the car was acting up. A bunch of people walked to the car and there it sat, almost perpendicular to the track where he'd backed out of his parking spot. He tried to start the engine but it made the weirdest noises and died immediately. Took us a few minutes to realise what was going on but someone noticed that he'd backed too far and buried the tail pipe in the soft dirt bank on the other side of the road, completely clogging the exhaust 😀 Pushing the car forward just a few cms and clearing the tail pipe fixed everything.
Great video D. looks like you will have content well in to 2022. You know, there are enough people with 580 out there, I'm sure one of them might be willing to put a copy of the 580 service manual under the tree for you. Thank you for what you do, you have taught me alot! My wife on the other hand ..... isnt so keen on your channel. I keep getting the WHAT about my kitchen remodel? question. Merry Christmas to you and all in the Mustie1 nation.
Abom79 has done a few videos on spray welding cylinders and refurbing the seals/rings. Might be worth looking into a local shop that does spray welding or give Adam a shout and see if he knows people in your area.
That beast was top of the line in its day, and still even today with all the features. Extendahoe, 4x4, those are expensive options. Such an awesome machine.
👍👌👏 This seems to be a really good machine, looks really well built too. Congrats for purchasing it. I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas time and a happy new year. Best regards, luck and health.
Thanks for adding the footage of the CORGI. My daughter and I watch regularly and were pleased to see our favorite dog breed on this episode. No better way to learn the big stuff other than just going for it. Enjoy the 580!
Given how that wiring looked, I'd be pretty tempting to change out all of those bulbs for much brighter LEDs and drop the fuse ratings down by 50% even if you get it straightened out. _Something_ melted it down the first time, but there's no need to run that much power with better technology available. 100W of LED (10A) will burn your eyes out of your skull.
No need to drop the fuse ratings even if one opted for LEDs. The rating of the fuse does not determine how many amps flow through a circuit, only at what amp draw the fuse will open/fail. And the size of fuse in any application is based on the ampacity of the circuit conductors so that if amp draw is too great, the fuse will fail and protect the wiring.
@Larry Walker Except the very clear evidence that the fuses didn't protect the wiring. The wiring is all fried. The entire point I'm making here is that we don't know what caused the original failure. It could be poor design, poor maintenance, or just a ghost in the machine. You could spend years chasing down the true root cause, while it melts down over and over, even after you repair all of the obvious failures. Or, you could just cut the load on the circuits in half, as well as the fuse ratings so the fuses actually do protect the wiring, and probably not worry about it again. Upgrading to LED is an upgrade regardless. @@BigBaddaBoom Everything being equal, it wouldn't hurt. I don't think 12v direct replacement LEDs are particularly prone to fail in a ways in which they burst into flames or anything, but..? There's no particular reason to have a fuse in the circuit that is twice the value that it requires, so, there wouldn't be any harm in it even ignoring my original point.
@@TheBrokenLife Fuses didn't protect the wiring because... they're not in circuit. He shows the back of them at 1:16:40 - there's no wire coming out of either of the fuses, someone bodged it, completely bypassing the fuse box.
Awesome buy. I love watching videos of work on larger machines( camarata, diesel creek etc). I look forward to a few more episodes on this machine, can’t wait!
The 3rd wire on the switches is the ground for the bulb in the switch (black w/yel IIRC.). Yes, those Scotchlock IDC connectors helped pay for my EE degree. Worked at a shop we repaired them almost daily. They were bad back in the '70s when they came out now we have the cheap Chinese copies. The rear wiper is right next to the front one. that is the 3-pos rotary switch on the side controls that did nothing. The one next it did the front
Buddy, I know exactly what you mean about those darn connectors. I was working in a foreign car shop in the late 70s and if a car had an electrical problem nine times out of ten it was one of those. Volvo was particularly bad about it. And a Merry Christmas to all Mustie fans from North Carolina farm country!
My very first encounter with those @&%!!* connectors was on my first car in '73 when I installed Marshal driving lamps on it. Instant drama. Never, ever used them. They should be made illegal.
Hi Musti, The button on the bucket control is a transmission cut out switch. Used when loading a truck, you can disengage the transmission when dumping and shift your shuttle in reverse. This way you can throttle up while dumping to speed up the process. If that makes any sense. The button on the gear shifter is to disengage transmission just so you can shift on the fly. Love you videos...been watching for quite awhile. I have been operating Case backhoes since the early 70's. Can't wait to see the improvements on this one!
Just be aware that on some loaders that button is to change from bucket tilt to added implement operation at the front like a bale grip or claw. So it varies a bit, but given what you says it makes sense for this one.
Good morning , Wishing everybody a Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays as to what ever it is that you celebrate. Just everybody please be Happy and be Safe !
Way to go man you deserve 💯% of respect for your channel awesome content you Rock! My favorite channel ever and I hope you continue doing amazing work for this amazing channel musty! I love you so very much your very talented and funny keep up the good work thanks buddy!!!😊😊😊❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Hello Mustie. You really have my attention on this one. I retired from a National Cemetery and this was one of the Backhoes we had. We used the Case 580's, 590's Super E, Super L. You probably know by now but when you are going to lock the boom, you pull the lever toward you and when the boom gets near the cab you push the lever the oppisite way, away from you and the boom will lock. These are easy to maintain and work on. Thanks for the video.
It is really hard to sit here and watch when you know how to get the boom to come back. We had this feature on a CAT I operated in the oil fields. The old timers had a laugh sitting back watching me struggle my first time trying to get it latched. Lol
@@markallen200 I agree Mark. It’s driving me crazy watching Mustie struggle. I want to be there so bad to show him how to operate it. I ran those for 24 years.
The front tires are still somewhat useful even when worn out in the center because the lugs on the shoulders will still give some, though less, traction. Any advice on what type, or brands, of oil are best for old rubber seals and hoses? hopefully not too expensive to replace when it leaks? I have trouble working on my cylinder seals because the cylinders are too heavy to lift with the machine disabled. It can fix another one but has no way to fix itself.
The button on the bucket control is a momentary switch for neutral so you can Rev the engine while lifting load the one on the gear selection is like a clutch to disengage so you can shift while in motion
couldn't have been sitting not use very long or every wiper seal on the cylinders valves would be weeping oil, witch will stop in time once it been used s few hours, so many people buy new tractors and they dont have much use for one and it sits a few months an they go to use it and every thing has dryed up so oils seps from every thing and they dont know why and they have a dealer rebuild everything when it is not needed, it just needs use, but the dealers love them kind of people as there back a few times a year do to lack of use, some times you can get away with it sitting an not have it seep oil but not often.. to set the travel lock you have to snap the boom up fast and retract fast,, i bought a 580B that wouldn't go forward or back at all but i knew what the problem was but the township maniac said it needed a new transition, witch i knew was not the case, i picked it up for 3000 cnd with a fairly new set of construction back tires as they had terf tires on it, they just wanted scrap value for it, the backhoe bucket needed all new pins an bushings an the heater fixed but as a life long welder the pins a pin bosses were a walk in the park for me, i have it home after a 400 mile trip and fully working in a month in my spare time with a cost in parts and floating of 700.00. IT CAME WITH THE SERVICE MANUAL THAT COVER ALL 580 MODELS, THE BOOK IS LIKE 7 INCHS THICK..
Nice backhoe probably a early 2000s model. 4x4 extenda hoe with a Cummins 4bt. Around here they still sell for $20,000 or more with that low of hours. Great find after you fix a few things on it
thats a nice machine. You should get stuff like that when you can. The new stuff today is computer dependant and federally fucked. No good once the lease is up.
We had a older case backhoe gave to us because it wouldn't pull itself and doing research everyone said spinning the tires in mud kills the case transmissions. I guess it makes everything spin faster than it was designed to internally. Couldn't drove the backhoe home? The company that did our local water system work drove theirs everywhere 30-40 miles for 30+ years.
That thing is perfect. As a kid I believe every kid had the metal toy of this backhoe. It would be worth a fortune where I’m at. Watch as soon as you fix the outrigger cylinders the hydraulics will start to break down the line till you’ve changed every seal and changed every hose. That’s the curse of hydraulic systems in my experience.
Had one of these. Excellent machines many used parts around. Cummins/ Case motors simple to service. Hoses and cylinder packings typical issues. Buy some big wrenches and torches.. You will need them.
Everyone's going bigger. I just watched a Marty T vid where he went from a mini tractor to a big bulldozer inside a week and now Mustie's on a similar track with the Backhoe. Interesting project - lot of electrical and hydraulics challenges. Not one that will be fixed overnight but I'm looking forward to seeing what you can make of it.
Boom cylinder stow position works (over Center) pull cylinder into back position and as soon as it’s bottomed out throw lever forward quickly to extend the boom! It will scare you as you think it’s going to come into the cab!! Some speed helps as momentum in what carry’s it over center!!
Looks about like my 580 SL (mine is a series 2) except yours has much better paint and I dont have the thumb on the hoe. That extend a hoe is a nice feature. Only 5 minutes in and cant wait to see how many attempts it takes to relock the hoe in to place. Took me a little while to get the hang of it. Edit: Im sure you may have figured this out, but to get the hoe locked. Bring it all the way back and just before it stops push the stick forward. This relieves enough pressure to allow it to come back the few extra inches to allow the lock the catch. I know it seems counter intuitive but that's how it's done. Bad design by Case in my opinion. It does need a little bit of momentum to get it up but not too crazy and make sure the boom is fully curled in as well. 4 wheel drive is a toggle switch on the panel to the right. Along with front and rear lights. There might be a switch for "comfort ride". It automatically adjusts the loader bucket while driving to minimize jarring. Just be sure to have it off while using the loader. Bottom left toggle near the lights is the 4 wheel drive. Pretty sure that weight is stock. Ours has it too. Might be part of the hoe option.
Near the end of the video.. that one orange wire is a main feed wire to the fuse block you're working on. That's why there is only one wire coming from the fuses. One main coming in to the fuse block and many going out to different components. Why did they "jump" from one to the next is beyond me. If only I lived closer... I was an electrician and worked on many different power generating systems and I love troubleshooting.. lol..
Same here. Getting ready to go get the week's groceries watching a Mustie1 video. Every Sunday morning for me for as long as I can remember now. (Well, past couple of years anyway 😉)
Sometimes they put a book behind the seat well john deere does don't know alot about case . Don't let the doors slam shut the glass will break, just sayin. Keep the bucket low if you travel with a load in it. They will tip over. Oh yeah an just because it will go fast don't mean you should go that fast. Once they start bouncing you could be in real trouble 😏. I've pushed alot of snow with a back hoe never needed a blade the bucket works. I always wanted to make wings that would a fix to each side for pushing snow. Looks like you got a nice tractor there. Thanks for sharing 👍
Merry Christmas Would you be able to tell me what solar charger you used on the trailer video and where you purchased it . Thanks for many hours of great entertainment. Murph
Every Case 580 I have operated from a D to a Super K you have to pull the boom lever towards you with a little gusto. Not crazy but just enough momentum. When you are close push the lever away from you and that keeps boom from slamming the tractor hard and let’s the boom lock. It’s an art of coordination but you’ll get it!
Retired operator here and I would suggest fixing and flipping this backhoe. Then get a excavator. Backhoe's are a pain to own and run. Best wishes in the new year Mustie!
ooooh thats a slippery slope you just begun Mr Mustie the machines are getting bigger lol lets see you dig yourself out of this one (pun intended) and at least when Mrs Mustie sees the bill on this old girl she wont have to dig your grave by hand!
Cummins 4BT. It really is a 12 valve 5.9 Cummins minus 2 cylinders. Good engines that run better if you run them a bit hard. This engine series was created for Case before it ever hit the street in a Dodge. My grandfather worked building these engines in Columbus for years. The 4BT is a bit pricey to repair but yours sounds healthy. Nice rig
Just incase you don't release another video, before the big day.. '' Merry Christmas Mustie1 '' & Thank you for all the video's that really have kept me going though this tuff year :)
As I watched you guys get the snow plow out of the field I saw the snow blower and wondered "what's wrong with that if anything"...maybe you should have got it too.
Merry Christmas to Mustie1 and the mustie nation(all us viewers) !! Wow, Darren u sure did pick an ambitious end of 2021 project(backhoe) to tackle !!🎄, 🎉 and a happy HEALTHY new year !!
What could Mustie1 offer as a early Christmas gift to his viewers? Everybody's favourite "toy" a backhoe or JCB as they tend to be known in the UK. Fantastic, nothing fazes him, so this will be video gold.. thanks for posting, looking forward to seeing you sorting it out. Merry Christmas to you and all your viewers. Happy New Year
I have noticed an increasing JCB presence here in the states. My father bought one about 10 years ago and I had never heard of one before that. Now I see them rather frequently.
It was to easy to get it running haha. Guess you want to be prepared for a thick layer of snow this year Mustie? Adam Booth (Abom79 on RU-vid) can help you out with the cylinders. They cut the rod off the eye and make a new rod that gets welded to the eye.
I believe the red button is a D-Clutch. Which does exactly what you said, disengage the clutch. So you can rev the engine while operating the hydraulics.
Button on top of loader control stick is "return to dig" It automatically returns the front bucket level to the ground when you are digging with front bucket. Top switch above 4 way switch is for interior dome light. 4WD is engaged electrically by switch on right hand console adjacent to the light switches.
LED bulbs would eliminate the high current draw from the lights and give you better working light. Looking forward to more on this project! Thanks Mustie1 and Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Mustie1!
Nice find! Not your typical Briggs & Stratton of VW, but you’re fearless so let’s get it done. TLBs are so versatile and useful. Great to have around especially if they can get enough work to support themselves. I’m envious! Merry Christmas!
I feel after years of watching your videos Darren, that your wife is a saint. And I very much appreciate that. Lol Edit: if that tractor had enough balls I've seen people walk them around using the front and rear like legs
Make sure you put a compatible oil in the hydraulic system and the transmission. I was a mechanic for Case IH in the 90s. There was a hydraulic oil that Case said not to use in their equipment. It was a generic oil available at farm stores and it was pretty popular at the time but I can t remember the name. Anyway we had a customer that bought a new 300 hp 4wd tractor. They had it about a month and pinched a hyd hose in half on a Sunday. They couldn't t get Case hydraulic oil so they put the don t use type in instead. A weekblater the new tractor was in our shop. The Trans hydraulic and brakes all used a common oil . The oil they put in it caused the glue holding the disc material to the steel plates on all the clutches and brakes to dissolve. The entire tractor had to be disassembled except for the engine and all that disc material had to be cleaned out of every passage pump bearing sump and any place else you can think of. All the disc's had to be replaced and then reassembled. There was no warranty because they put the wrong oil in it. The cost to them was around 15000 dollars. It was a very expensive ordeal.
So now we need to tie a bunch of my favorite RU-vidrs into one, Mustie1, Abom79, LetsDig18, and Cutting Edge Engineering, with MrPete222 thrown in for his purchasing everything cool habits and Blondihacks for her electronics knowledge. It's a free for all, or maybe an "all skate"? Thanks Mustie1, as always, for taking us along for the ride.
Misti 1 that machine is priceless there is nothing wrong with it it just needs a good operator! And some lovin! That’s a 20,000 fall or machine all day long 👍
