This is so beautiful it gives me tears. A different world we lived in folks, I was just a kid back in the 70's but I remember these bad boys well. I miss those days :(
Hi, I just saw 10 years ago I left a comment. I was a boy in the 1960’s and if you had a Cadillac parked in your driveway 1910 through 1980 it meant YOU MADE IT in life, owned a car that sold for more money than a house sold for, in many circumstances. Year 2023, a changed miserable world now.
Its ironic...on the original 'Lets Make A Deal' they had big luxurious Cadillacs for prizes, now they have small, ugly, plasticy, Kias and Hyundais, YUK!!
cadillacs had climate control with 2 ac units one in front one in back and you set the temp. not just min/max..load leveling suspension.tilt , telescopic,18 pre sets on both am/fm with tape /8 track. older models had record players.the light on the front fender lights up at night to see clearly around the corner...twilight sentinal headlights (low and high beam on their own)power seats mirrors ,foot rest for rear passengers. etc.etc.. they were loaded with more amenities than a rolls royce..
Why do I tear up watching these strangers win these beautiful Cadillacs from 50 years ago? Because it is Lost America. How wonderful if we could go back .
@@Combatarms4234I agree the current Yaris looks like every other Jap car on the road and is generic and boring but check out the 2nd gen hatchback Yaris made from 2005 to 2010. Really cute car. That’s not how I usually look at cars but it’s adorable. Look at the pic and tell me otherwise.
Surfer Bri I am speaking in general terms. Cadillac and Lincoln caused major excitement in those days. I am aware there were no Lincoln’s in the video clip.
@@tonychavez2083 Lincoln's are not even in the same grade, or as good as Cadillacs... They're just the VERY BEST that Ford Motor Company has to offer. No one who is 'well to do' trades in a Cadillac... for a Lincoln. THINK about it.
Totally Gangster... Those cars were so huge and so plush, it was like riding a cloud down the freeway... I'm sure they had the 472 and 500 cubic inch caddy engines... I wonder if they came with Louie and Guido in the trunk... "Hey...we hadah whack 'em... Leave the pistol, take the cannoli!!!" These cars are sooooo Gannngggggggsssssttttttterrrrr, and soooo Piiiiiimmmmmmpppppppppppp... How could the '70's have been any cooler than that... Keep on truckin' baby....
+ Paul Bourgeois  I forget if our 1976 Fleetwood had the 472 or the 500. It was one of either. Yes, the trunks were huge. Something you will not realize unless you are a child who did such a thing, but those doors were incredibly heavy.... if you left a finger in the jamb, you'll NEVER forget it! :)
I had a 74 with a 472, i couldn't help but just stare at that engine almost daily, that was back in the 80's, everyone I knew had 1.6, 2.0 and the lucky ones 2.8 Litre V-6
In my opinion... America peaked in the 1960s and 70s. It's been down hill ever since. Everything from music to housing to disposable income to personal safety... It's all shit in 2017.
Trump won't fix crap. America needs Bernie Sanders to bring back the New Deal and soak the rich. The top tax rate in the 70s was 70% and unions were strong.
Back when owning a Cadillac really meant something..My dad bought a 76 Coupe de Ville new. It cost $12 grand brand new..I think it was the most beautiful car he ever owned..Firethorn metallic red with black leather interior and a soft cabriolet roof with lamps on the side.Gas was 75 cents a gallon and it was the best car to take on vacation..Best ride of any car I've ever been in..
+myboylollipop09 Yes, I grew up as a young child being carted around in a 1976 Fleetwood Brougham (deElegance I believe). The last of the true full size. I'd love to drive one again, it was probably 1990 the last time I did.
+myboylollipop09 that was prolly the most beautiful coupe deville ever built. would take it over any other. its a shame i missed those cars when they were new. thats when cars where designed to impress not to be economic. they dont make them like that no more.
Big Bill O'Reilly >>> It was a particularly bad year for Ford LTD’s - I know that. For large GM’s, I can only take your word for it. What I do know is that California smog exemption status is only 1975-and-BACK. So 1976 is the first year moving forward that they still have to pass muster. That in my mind is what makes 1976 cars particularly bad- at least from my point of view.
Hopefully I’ll get the chance to ride in one some day. Sounds nice and cozy. I can only imagine what sinking into those huge, shiny, black leather seats must have felt like and then experiencing what an absolute joy it must have been to ride in. Makes me nostalgic for something I never did lol.
Yeah but it was all a (kinda dirty) trick. How many of these people do you think could pay the full tax bill up front for one of these luxury cars? Probably not many. So the show gets its big moment, the dealer gets its free advertising, and the couple ends up not getting the car they won.....because they couldnt afford it. Affording the full tax bill on a base level Sentra is a LOT more realistic.
snappy452 That’s what’s good about British game shows, everything’s tax free. The only problem is they were always restricted, originally to £1000 in 1960, £2500 by 1974 and £6000 in 1981 so the cars were basic and compact but a genuine giveaway prize!
I like those cars too. Especially the red Coupe deVille in the beginning. You can really see that fit and finish was beautifully done. I dare to say there was nothing comparable on the planet back then. I´ve been around these cars and their competitors. And back then, even a new Rolls or Mercedes would look and feel like a truck besides a Caddy. Inside AND out. Especially the 75 and 76 modelyears. In europe we really did admire those cars for their quality and unique style. Believe it or not :)
Turki Ali - تركي علي >>> Well said, sir. Now try explaining that to the idiots on here that don’t agree with us! They need some serious schooling! 🤦♂️ Or a good beating. I haven’t figured out which one- quite yet.
D McNamara one major reason for this ever increasing expense and ever decreasing value is that women are being manipulated to run to the workfield as if their human worth depended on their corporate price tag. as a result of basic supply and demand many more available workers meant value was lowered for everyone, not just women. many 'backdated bigots' like me with a grasp in economics said although it began as a empowerment 'choice', it won't remain one for too long. we were shamed for saying such horrible thing. now as day passes by we see exactly what we predicted back in early 80s. for majority of people there's no choice but to work, work, work, just to be able to get by. we are not robots so depression is higher than ever and anti depressants are most common prescription drug. the faster we realize the value of life and worth of a person doesn't depend upon how much cash money they bring, the better. ask the japanese, they'll confirm since they made the exact mistake. and the south koreans are in the process of repeating that.
Amazing! When they open the curtain, you immediately know what it is and you're response is wow! Today when they bring out a car on "Price is Right" you look at it and ask "what is it?" Today's cars have absolutely no identity, style or presence. They're just transportation.
You are 1000000% right... We had style back then, we had class, we had flash, we had debonair... Cocaine, sideburns, leather 3/4 length coats, with lapels the size of Italy... polyester leisure suits, Huge Afros, that the brothers used to call a "Natural".... platform shoes, that lit up, or that had a little goldfish, swimming in the huge acrilyic heel... I saw a mac daddy wearing an orange leisure suit, with a gold hat, with a big feather, & a pair of those platform boots, with the fish swimming in the acrylic soles of the boots, strutting down Wisconsin Avenue, the main drag in Milwaukee, way back in '78... And I remember thinking, wow there goes a real pimp! He might have been a pimp, but he sure as hell dressed himself!
Paul Bourgeois Well, I DID have a leisure suit and a pair of platform shoes but I can't say I thought I was cool by any means but the big cars and massive chrome grills, whitewalls and plush interiors the size of an efficiency apartment do warm my heart. I still have a 1972 Buick Riviera and until a few years ago a Buick Electra LTD same year. 19 feet long, 127" wheelbase with a 455 cubic inch. Nothing like floating down the road in vintage Detroit iron.
I've had a few old 1969-1976 Cadillacs and nothing rode like them. You could speed over potholes, railroad tracks, speed bumps, ect. and feel nothing. All you'd hear would be a slight "thump-thump" of the tires, lol. Those big 472 and 500 c.i. engines were a little thirsty in city streets too but not bad on the highway.
As a child my grandfather was a cadillac man ,he would buy one every couple years,he kept them spotless too. I'll never forget the how comfortable it was riding in the backseat.I think everyone should ride in a cadillac atleast once in their life.
Why don't they give away cars like that on game shows today? Now it seems like all you see on Let's Make a Deal or Wheel of Fortune are crappy cars like a Chevy Spark or a Ford Fiesta... and people actually get excited about them! It it was me winning a POC like that on a game show, I'd tell them "thanks, but you can keep it".
The price of a Cadillac then 9 to 12 thousand with inflation today 50 to 60 thousand . So the game shows will stick with the Kia and other cheaper cars .
I won a jeep on the Price is Right. It's not as easy as you would think to sell it for top dollar. The dealer will only give you 50% of the value because once you sign the paper work, it is now a used car. Miles or no miles. And yes, you do have to sign the paper work for the dealer to get paid by CBS. I took it to Carmaxx. I still took a 7k loss off of the sticker with 160 miles on it from the ride home.
242HP >>> Well they stopped giving them away because they stopped making them! I know that’s a Captain Obvious statement, but it needs to be underscored, if for no other reason, than to set the table for what the real questions should be: 1. Why did they stop making them? 2. Should they have stopped making them? 3. Can or will they make them one day again? My answers: 1. CAFE, DOT, NHTSA, EPA, CARB, BAR 2. No! 3. Probably not... refer to #1.
Over the past five decades I believe Monty has been the greatest celebrity I ever encountered. On the other hand; sadly; his sorrowful loss will be in my hearts forever from his accomplishments. RIP Monty Hall 1921-2017
Absolutely correct! He made a difficult hosting job look incredibly easy. He is also remembered for his wonderful charity work. So proud to call him a fellow Canadian!
Great cars! I had a '71 and a '75 Fleetwood and a '76 Eldorado. Unusual cars in the UK, but great fun. So much better than any of the cars that any of the manufacturers are making today. They just oozed character even if they drank petrol like it was going out of fashion. :-)
+Geoff Valenti preach. very good choices right there. the 75 fleet and the 75/6 eldo are my fav lacs. i own a seville but my cousin has like 5 lacs. then again he lives in the us.
The 71 Coupe Deville a true dream car. 74 Eldorado Convertible heaven on earth, 75 Coupe De Ville simply perfect 76 Eldorado Convertible made you feel special, 74 Fleetwood another world.
Barbara McIlvaine Yeah-- a lot og "good" it did to drive those 20' long, 40,000 lbs. of steel-- when they were Shit on a collision. todays car might be all plastic,, But they are Safer than Any of those 20' long hunks of Garbage on Wheels.
Benjafovi1 CR >>> Shit spewing out of a true liberal’s mouth. You represent everything that’s wrong with this country today. Go to Europe if you care about safety more than style. I can’t believe people like you actually exist and are allowed to breathe the same air as the rest of us- and have an opinion without adult supervision.
Silver N Black Mopar >>> And what makes you think I give a shit about your family? Big cars’ lives matter. Family values & you don’t mean fucking shit! And besides , if you think your family is safer in a Prius than a 70’s DeVille (Coupe or Sedan); then you ain’t a real sharp guy... now are you? 🤦♂️
Benjafovi1 CR >>> “Oh no! A “conservative” is telling me to go to Europe. What am I going to do now?” You dust off your damn passport, pack your bags, get your one way airline ticket, and go fuck yourself! Seriously, do I REALLY have to dumb it down and explain it all in THAT much detail?! Christ Almighty! I guess I got some serious work ahead of me, tryin’ to get your sorry ass all straightened out!
This is one of my favorite videos on You Tube. I love the new Price Is Right, but all they give away are shitty KIAs, Jettas, and Focuses...not high end cars at all.
Beautiful cars. These Caddy's cost twice as much as the average everyday drivers, that "normal" people took out loans for. If you could afford to park one of these in your driveway, you truly have "arrived", and attained the American dream. Cadillacs were perceived that way for a long time, and rightfully so. These Cadillacs were a successful styling exercise, and they were a product of the times that they were marketed in. Were they perfect? Nope. Is a modern computer designed GM Cobalt, with a faulty ignition switch any better, AFTER, we all paid tax payer dollars to bail out GM? Give me a 70's Cadillac over a Cobalt, any day. Class dismissed.
Ben Dover >>> That is an interesting point you bring up. The change was not so much a requirement as it was an allowance. Prior to 1975 (or 74?- really not so sure of the exact cutoff, but you’re close); rectangular (or square) headlights were illegal. When the government finally allowed them, all the automakers jumped on them, because none of them wanted to look out of date still using round headlights. But in truth both were still optional. BMW, VW, late 70’s Lincolns, LTD’s, etc. Very similar to the transition from dual to quad headlights between 1957 & 1958.
@@charliehein8921 so you're saying that Cadillac doesn't have plastic? What about the fake wood trim interiors that are made out of cheap PLASTIC? What about their aluminum head gaskets that get blown on a consistent basis? Or how about their shotty transmissions? Today's Cadillacs are GARBAGE..That's why NOBODY buys them..GM was stupid to get rid of Oldsmobile and Pontiac..they should've shit canned Cadillacs..personally I don't drive American cars period because I'd rather get value and reliability for my money like Lexus or Infiniti or Acura or Audi then a crappy unreliable piece of junk American car...BUT if I HAD to buy an American luxury car I'd go with Lincoln...
@@jasonsprague3860 "Overpriced and cheap," huh? ;) While they do have plastic (like every other car brand these days), it is far from cheap plastic. The head gasket problem I think you're referring to was a problem on the Northstar engine (which was otherwise an incredible powerplant) was discontinued in 2011. The "shotty[sic]" transmission? Look, you've obviously got an ax to grind - one of these guys who thinks it's cool to bash American cars. I don't know if it's your daddy you're trying to impress or somebody else but let me tell you that you sound old and crazy. The reason people don't buy Caddy's is because of misinformed (and unpatriotic btw) people like you.
@@charleshein4477 you're wrong..Cadillacs are JUNK..have you ever owned a Cadillac? I have..the day I got rid of it was 1 of the happiest days of my life! And you think I'm not "patriotic" because you think I'm bashing Americans cars? How do you know what kind of cars I own? As a matter of fact I own THREE American cars...i own a Ford F150 A Lincoln Navigator and a Chevy Corvette thank you very much...
That is when a Cadillac was A CADILLAC!! I love the lHester Family at 2:05 almost going into Hysterics!! I WOULD TODAY if they Rolled That Baby Out!! LOL
Those were the end of the lines for Cadillac. That brand, as well as all the brands, went downhill from there when the government got involved in the car industry. But I remember driving some of them... they were class.
Cars provided by The Coolest car dealership in America Casa de Cadillac Serving Southern California Since 1949 14401 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
A lot of the game shows sourced Caddys through them. I wonder what they got from it other than a national plug for a local dealership. (For that matter, none of the other makes ever seem to plug the dealer...)
Even back then, Southern California had plenty of drivers. Sometimes the producers would just outright buy the cars. Other times, they would get a discount in return for the advertising. And btw, Casa De Cadillac is still around today.
the cadillac eldorado convertible has been one of my absolute favorite cars ever since i first saw one in a movie, i'm still very much after one of these, still a dream of mine to own and hopefully one day i will call one of them mine. greetings from germany.
OMG! This is the best RU-vid video ever! 0 my God its so wonderful! I can't believe it! especially since I'm a owner and lover of Cadillacs and remember cadillacs golden years, I watch a lot of videos on RU-vid and some of them really suck but this one here really, really, really is the real deal and God I love it
It's so sad how our society has changed for many reasons and I don't think for the better. Now everything is woke. Everything is racial. Every color has to be represented every sexual orientation has to be represented otherwise you're canceled
Wow! 1970's Cadillacs were really a visual knock-out! Coupe de Ville,, Elderado, Fleetwoods. $9K, $11K, were in today's dollars something like $35K to $45K. WOW! What cars Cadillac use to be!
Taxes varied by state of course, and even by county. But no way in hell is it accurate to claim 30-40% tax rate on cars then. Nobody would have purchased new cars! I know during that era, in Indiana the excise tax was more like 2.5% of a vehicle’s new price. The rate for used cars was adjusted for depreciation. All told, all taxes on a brand new $12,500 Cadillac - including registration, likely would have been under a grand.
SlotAddict Brian - There is no “game show tax” as such. Winnings from game shows - both cash and material, are taxed the same as any income or purchase, no matter how you acquire them. In the case of cash prizes, you pay regular income tax (state/federal) according to whatever bracket the prize bumps you into. You’d pay even less if your state of residence charges no individual income tax, seven states don’t. In that case, California state taxes would be the only deduction, as most game show production is in California.
The most beautiful luxury cars of all time along with Lincoln Continentals. American Classics. Love Lets Make a Deal, The greatest game show of all time. Monte Hall the greatest game show host of all time, really miss him.
+Vincent Marro I recently watched that episode on Buzzr. I wonder if Jay ad-libbed that funny line himself, or if somebody suggested it to him. Either way, it was funny. That even made Monty laugh.
My ex was a red head. As they say, "the carpet and the drapes matched". She had her "pubes" trimmed in the shape of a heart !! (not sure how she accomplished it, but that is a true story) I left her in the spring of 1987, but every Valentine's day, I think of it.
You have to understand that air conditioning was still an extra cost option on those luxury cars back then. It was not a common option as it added substantially to the cost of the car, especially lower priced family cars.
Thank you for posting this video! It's actually one of the main reasons I watched Let's Make a Deal was to see when they gave away Cadillacs! People now a days cannot imagine what truly dream mobiles that these cars were! No car nowadays has the same allure, excitement, glamour and satisfying driving pleasure that these magic carpets had! Thanks for sharing this video!
Yes they are. You can find videos selling them and you can check out Hemmings classic car trading website... www.hemmings.com/classifieds/search-form?AdvancedSearch&Recirculation
@@jec1ny I was referring to the actual cars won on the show. I know classics can always be bought. It would be cool to go to car shows driving the actual Caddy that you won.
@lasuvidaboy -Mega dittos man!-They were the best-lookin Caddys ever! Especially the 75-76 with the rectangular headlights! My pop had a 74 Caddy and did have some mechanical issues but not so bad! Still--he kept it 14 years and had 70 thou miles on it!
@3:23 OMG the woman in the tomato costume. Her reaction to winning the car is so precious. I just wanted to hug her. Granted, if I won a '75 Eldorado on a game show, I'd likely react the exact same way.
cheryl hawkins >>> Yup! Blame Ralph Nadar, Joan Claybrook, the hired government henchmen at the NHTSA, CAFE, [C]alifornia-ARB, EPA, “flush him down” Jerry Brown; and every other person who’s made it their business to tell us what our vehicles should & shouldn’t look like.
ALL fabulous. LOVE the comments, loved the cars ,loved the show!( loved the 70s) Monty Hall was a superb host, and, human being.Jay Stewart was the best announcer ever. And those were incredible prizes-- beautiful " boats".When you won that,it was truly significant.
I like the regular C-body cars like the Deville and Fleetwood, at least before they added giant bumpers and rectangular headlights. But the Eldorados had an ugly roof line and eventually the side lines became too angular as well, especially with the glitzy "Barritz" package. Of course, those were the days when Elvis and Frank Sinatra were in a bidding war over a Stutz Bearcat A-body-conversion car (look it up if you like, but it's hard to un-see something that hideous); no accounting for tastes.
Todd Eck >>> Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree. 1971-73 Coupe DeVilles & Sedan DeVilles were amongst some of the most beautiful cars I ever saw. I remember wanting one since I was 7 yrs old. I’ll take the ones you come across that you don’t want. Send them my way please!
You know, I'm a Cadillac fanboi and I agree with this! Those cars were not that attractive and the interiors were far from luxurious. They were not the best years for Cadillac. Many of their best models came after the time of this video. And everybody gives Cadillac crap about how bad their cars are now compared to these!!!! Today's Cadillacs are way nicer than these even in relative terms. It's just a different time and the Germans have people brainwashed.
What I have to laugh at is all the people who complain about these Cadillacs as being oversized barges, wasteful, heavy, etc. You all do realize that the Ford F-150~350’s, Chevy Suburbans, GMC Yukons, Chevy Silverados, etc. that are available today- are all bigger and heavier than any of these Cadillacs *EVER* were! So I don’t wanna’ hear anybody complain about any of these. They look longer because they’re lower to the damn freakin ground compared to pickups, SUV’s, crossovers, and just about all of today’s sedans & coupes! That’s it! Take the total length & width of a 1972 Sedan DeVille & compare it to the same of a 2018 Chevy Suburban. Multiply, get the square footage and look at them side by side. The Suburban’s footprint is bigger. Most of those Cadillacs were well under 6,000 lbs. Today’s largest SUV’s & pickups?- 8,000 to almost 10,000 lbs! The only area where they fell well below the mark was MPG... that I will concede, but that’s the only thing. You haters all need to get your stats straight before you complain about 70’s Cadillacs & big cars in general. Some of you damn fools have me so fired up, it’s a cryin’ ass shame.
😳😳😳THOSE FILE FOOTAGE were ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!! SLIM PEOPLE, THE FASHION PLENTY OF COLORS, THE BIG HUGE BEAUTIFUL CARS!!!! WOW!!!!! I'm impressed......I CAN'T BELIEVE to WATCH that !!!!!! People look like 70 ies ACTORS from a MOVIE😊😊😊😊😊. 1:57 The woman is so HAPPY and so FUNNY 😂😂😂👏👏👏👍👍😘.
Compare this to the reactions (almost disappointment!) in the import video when they show all the Datsuns. You just don't have that discrepancy in workmanship nowadays. These Caddies are fit for kings compared to the wretched tin box imports of the time. They may have cost a little more than double but were worth far more in my opinion! The first black woman was hilarious. And wearing the Queen of Spades?! That sure doesn't seem too politically correct by today's standards, lol.
That’s how it was! A/C is standard on today’s cheapest new cars, but was an extra-cost option on almost every American car until the late 70’s. For a while earlier, Cadillac sold an entry-level model called the Calais, still quite expensive, that lacked A/C and most of the “famous Cadillac power accessories” that Jay touted on Casa de Cadillac’s upscale models. IIRC the Calais (named after a French beach town on the English Channel) had an AM radio standard, but I wouldn’t bet on that. The standard seating choices were icky vinyl, or a rather nicer cloth/vinyl combination, but certainly not leather. What you were getting on that stripped-down Caddy for about $55K in today’s dollars was Cadillac engineering, with the same exterior look and paint as many pricier models, and the same engine (except for the ultra-pricey Eldorado), and huge Cadillac spaciousness..
Wow! That is a bygone era. A time when if you won a Cadillac, there was no F-Bombing, Twerking or 20 inch ghetto wheels... And Cadillacs cost 5 figures rather than 6.
2:31 The 1971-78 Eldorados were mostly hideous and overdecorated, especially when longer bumpers were mandated and rectangular headlights became the norm. But this early convertible is pretty cool looking, with side lines that suggest a rocket ship and no padded roof to clutter things up. If only they all looked that good.
My grandfather had a 1976 Coupe Deville which we continued to own until 1990 when it was too long to fit in the garage at the new house. Had to be sold. What a shame!!!!
