Bigger radiator, ZJ fan clutch, high flow water pump, snorkel or some type of cold air intake that has access to actual cold air, heat wrapping your new header because the old one is most likely cracked, having the fan on a switch for if you’re sitting in traffic on a hot day, and the radiator filter are all great options to help cool the Jeep.
I had a 94 that I over heated because I was young and at the mud bogs (as a spectator) that day and decided to put my jeep in a hole it had no business being in. It took the dozer about a half hour to pull me out because I was like 5th in line. I ended up selling the jeep to a friend because I figured it was toast. He sprayed the mud out that was packed between the radiator and ac condenser. Then drove it 100 miles to work each way for the next 2 years🤦🏻♂️
I've been chasing the cooling issues on my 96 XJ for years. Finally, put in a Novak cooling system (with 3 fans) designed for an LS swap. Yeah, if you wheel and your XJ is built, you're going to have to address overheating issues. It's an XJ!
I'm having an issue with slight overheating and it all started with installing the wrong water pump. If your pump pulley runs on the outside of the belt, you need a reverse water pump, which is really hard to find. Not even the dealer knows about this. Look at his video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_OB-ooh4qc0.html
I have to respectfully disagree with you. These things run hot. It may not be boiling over but it’s still too hot. The electric fan comes on too late on these things. We hunt out of one and in the summer months when the weather is over 95 it’s running way to hot for me. Try running low hunting speeds with the A/C on and the weather in the high 90’s low 100’s .

Running temperature is 210F/98C. That's 2C from boiling, and it's the desired operating temperature, not "too hot". Electric fan comes on past that temperature and stops below it in a 10º range or when the AC is on. The rest of the air moving job is done by the clutch fan, and that's why he's saying it has to be in good working condition. Clean full rad, working pump, working clutch fan it's all it needs. If you need low speed, drop to 1-2 or even low range and let the clutch fan rev a bit higher. That'll get all the air it needs.
if you have NO coolant in your vehicle, the temperature gauge is WRONG .!. if you run out of coolant and your temp gauge says you are running cool, it is WRONG ! the temperature sensor will not work correctly if you are out of coolant and it is trying to read the temperature of the air inside your motor where your liquid coolant should be ! and your motor will run a little too hot without a fan shroud to funnel and direct the air flow
Most consider 170 cool. I consider it normal operating temp. It allows me to do 10000 mile oil changes and belts hoses wiring computers last far longer. Much less wear on motors. I know the 4.0 is tough but aluminum alloy motors- not at all! I run em all 170 and keep good compression forever in all. Almost never change antifreeze. But running 170 is a challenge in a 4.0 cherokee. I'm checking my water pump to make sure it's turning correct way- it's the first time I've heard this!
Operating temperature for the 4.0 is 195, if you are at 170 you are running way too cool and you will have carbon build up in the exhaust and eventually fuck you car up
