LETS TALK PHYSICAL MEDIA - Desperado, Heathers and No way out all coming to 4K! 

Physical media is becoming exclusively a boutique collectors enterprise for production companies. It's like physical media gentrification. BTW we need Cronenberg's "the Fly" on 4K!

I enjoyed season 1 of X-Men 97. Kino Studio Classics announced yesterday that the Ron Howard directed 'Gung Ho' is coming to Blu Ray later this year. One of my favorite Michael Keaton films that I don't have on physical media.

1000% agreement with you about wanting 4K blu rays for Breaking Bad, The Wire and Sopranos. Add Better Call Saul for me in as well.

I’m hearing Silence of the Lambs IS GETTING a new 4k scan to fix some color timing issues the Kino release had. Certainly got my per-order in for this one and will aim to compare it to the Kino one I have. Love “the fit” swap lol - made me laugh 🤣

I have LOTS of thoughts and experience with that second question about ripping your discs to your own “Netflix.” I do this because of my travel and while I MUCH prefer to experience the “physical media” side at home, I get to stream and watch my own films while traveling. So I can actually watch and make more time for watching the many films I keep growing in my collection. Or else I may never have the time to experience it all. And it is a “like for like” as long as you don’t use software like “handbrake” to compress. Which for some people is important if you don’t have storage space but storage is getting cheaper and cheaper these days so I’m not worried about that. Can always buy more storage and then keep the like for like bitrate and even Dolby vision / Atmos if the disc has it. And it’s a nice way to back up your collection should God forbid anything happens to it. Using media servers like Plex makes this pretty seamless and the best of both worlds for collectors and film enthusiasts alike. You and I will have to chat more on that one some day soon!

El Mariachi actually cost $7225 to make, and half of that budget was funded by RR’s participation in experimental clinical drug testing. A few million dollars were spent by Columbia for transferring the print to film, post production and marketing. Quite impressive for a newbie with no filmmaking credentials to producing such franchise starter on such finances, more so than the original Star Wars!

I feel like Sony is doing the steelbooks for JUST their versions that have the Dolby Vision to show that is their “premium line”

16mm is no excuse to not put those movies in 4k. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Dog Soldiers were both put on 4k and look very good and i believe i heard they were both 16mm.

I’ve got the Laser Discs of Desperado and Heathers. I had to import them from the US to the UK. $100 each in 2024 money.

It's 1 to 1!! you get the exact same quality in a raw file, but you can compress it down to save space if you want but that will effect the quality. So yes you can keep the exact raw file at a larger storage space. As i am also a quality snob i keep it as a raw file and do 0 compression regardless of saving disk space. For me, it's boils down to packaging, and yes, of course, i absolutely love my physical collection and seeing all the different beautiful arworks but the trade off in saving all that money to achieve having all the 4k's i want then i rather sacrifice selling off the discs and saving space in the apartment and money and gaining the convenience of having it all on my tv with 1 click away. Also practically too if i ever move house or go on holiday i can just take my box and access all my 4k movies hassle free on any tv this also is a huge bonus. I have decided to go down this route and say goodbye to my physical collection and sell it all as the pros out way the cons as i know collecting physical media is only going to get more expensive and in order for me to keep up this habbit this is the only way I'll be able to do it. The packaging and the experience it comes with just doesn't cut it for me. If the 4k discs where so much more cheaper then sure, I'll stay put however its only getting more and more expensive and your getting lesss extra content now too the labels are ripping us collectors off which has put me off.

No surprise from Universal in regards to the lack of love for Jaws 3-D and Jaws the Revenge. If anything I just hppe they give us the original US theatrical version as the main feature on The Revenge disc! Universal need to sort it out lol. I might pick up that Silence of the Lambs from Arrow.

It’s getting where I cannot purchase the disc on Day One like I used too. I have to wait for sales. I’ve had to use restraint to keep from buying on release day. I am pretty much waiting on sales now. I gotta be honest, with slowing down on buying disc, I’ve been able to appreciate the disc I do own. These $34-$45 cost for a single disc, I cannot buy a weekly handful of physical media disc. For June, I have 3 preorders-that’s it. I have to be very selective at these cost. Taxi Driver Steelbook at $45 is way more than I want to spend-but I want it. So I’ll sacrifice other disc for that one. For me, $20 is the perfect price point for me to buy a 4k. That’s ideal for me. I’ll do $25 for CC when the sales come up. Those are worth it. I like Arrow Boxset, but I’m very selective on those. KL sales, I’m like a kid in a candy store!

The mistakes in the Kino release of Silence of the Lambs are in the master supplied by MGM, and they have to be fixed in-house by Arrow

I rip alot of my blurays to hdd and "stream" them via Plex... They are 1:1 copys and on your own internat network there's no quality loss. I still keep all the blurays, then it's still there as a backup and the actual disc doesn't get any wear'n'tear. 4K discs are still to big for me to do it with them though.

I will have to double dip on that DRIVE 4K from SONY. The visuals on DRIVE are insane extra crispy. Steelbooks are the current trend right now for collectors. Not a collector, your are assed out of a regular slip cover.

Im a fan of Friends and getting shows on physical is difficult, let alone on 4K. Just bought the entire blu-ray set for $40 so ill be holding till that price drops to $150 at least. Warner Brothers will never get full retail from me ever again. 🗑 I will be picking up all of my shows that I love and have been canceling most of my streaming services. Done with streaming. However if we get friends on 4K, I want Sopranos, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, The Office all of 4K. Have to buy shows now because HBO Max takes off shows like Westworld and thats whats going to happen with the rest. The most popular shows with be removed and charge extra for. So go buy your favorite shows on physical because its coming.

People are starting to love the STAR WARS prequels because of the Disney STAR WARS are so hated.

It's funny because I was thinking about movie trailers lately and how they are spoiling movies. I thought the trailer for The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare showed all of the best parts. I thibk watching Abigail without seeing the trailer first would have been good since it gave plot points away that otherwise would have been a mystery. And last night, I watch Ready or Not not knowing abything avout the movie, and I'm glad I got to watch it not knowing because I really liked it. Then I watched the trailer right after from the extras menu, and I was like, the trailer gave away the plot lol

Mixed bag collector sets just don't appeal, because like you, movies you're going to rewatch are only worth collecting, and stream the rest...
