It’s crazy every Mormon including myself knew that Joseph got killed in jail, but not one single time in my 30 years in Mormonism in any class or gospel discussion did it get brought up why he was in jail in the first place.
@LatterDayInvestigator
@LatterDayInvestigator 11 месяцев назад
Exactly! OR that he was arrested based on "lies and false accusations" (not true), or that he was killed because he "would not deny his testimony of the Book of Mormon" (Elder Holland in conference a few years ago). I was also in my 30s when I first learned that he had a handgun himself and was shooting back at the mob coming up the stairs.

@aprilshowers21 Can see similarities with what's going on with tRump & tRumpism. Finally being held accountable for his proven lies and deception but his cult is brainwashed into believing he is being persecuted. How one man can be held above millions as being their 'jesus' is truly astounding & very scary for the people of America.

44:27 the book of Abraham church essay is the straw that broke myself as well. Longtime fan of Egyptology and the Mormon ties to Egyptian but when I discovered this on the churches on website, I was pretty much done. One thing that it was not mentioned that I like to point out is in the English text of the book of Abraham introduction. It says it was written by Abraham‘s own hand. Pretty interesting, when not a single instance of his name exists, and it is proven to be a funerary text written at a different era than Abraham supposedly lived.

John, why don’t you start a site where parents and children can write public letters to their own loved ones that might be seen later, even after the parent dies (for their children and grandchildren) I know a lot of Mormons tend to “forget” the stories of those who quit believing. This could be a way to show the family that this person was a caring, worthy individual in their own right.

I love this so much! One thing to note, which may be helpful for LDS members is that the Christian Bible doesn’t have some of these same problems. Very little has been changed and there is tons of archeological evidence found that supports its place and events in history. (I imagine some may think that ALL religions have these issues and not realize that the anachronisms, plagiarism and many changes throughout the years are NOT the same across religions). That being said, I’m a nevermo. I’ve been hurt by a lot of things in the Christian church and want to provide my girls with important information in a respectful way. My ex husband has different beliefs than me and I think it’s so important to empower children to hear pros and cons and make their own decisions. Informed consent is everything and something very few of us had told to us without bias, across religions. Thanks for sharing this!

The Bible (all 30,000+ different versions of it) has plenty of its own problems. But the problems don’t negate the good or truth it contains. The challenge is to discern truth from error, because the Bible contains plenty of both. Same for Mormon texts.

She sounds like a very wise parent. Her kids are lucky. How can someone come to know the truth about anything without being able to look at both sides equally? You just can't. It's so basic to good critical and common sense thinking. The term "anti-mormon" towards people who have a different POV, are almost always used in a fallacious / biased manner. IMO, the church should tell its members to ban the use of this term.

This is a very common response to get from believers. I think the best response is to show respect for their right to believe, and then ask for the same respect for your beliefs. People CANNOT objectively look at evidence until they are ready. Nothing pushes someone further into belief than someone finding fault with something they hold sacred. I think this is especially true with religion because religion becomes a large part of a person’s identity. When someone feels their beliefs are being attacked what they really feel is that THEY are being attacked. It is very personal. There is usually NOTHING you can do or say that can cause someone to be objective and logical until they are ready to admit “maybe it isn’t true.” Many people will never come to that point simply because it is too scary and/or painful. Just love them where they are and hopefully that love and respect will be reciprocated.

Amy says she doesn’t think “feelings” are evidence in supporting external truth but often uses her own “feelings” to reinforce her arguments (“I don’t like that” “I don’t feel like a loving God would xyz”). @DaveJohnsonSCG
@DaveJohnsonSCG 11 месяцев назад
I think feelings can be valid. I think the goal of what she was getting at is that using feelings alone to prove truth is not a reliable way to test. For lack of evidence items the only evidence you have is feelings. For items that do have evidence then feeling can be a factor but it would be at the bottom of the list of reliable sources. Court cases of self defense shootings have to have the element that the person felt they were in danger but it's not the only evidence required nor the only evidence that is considered in the case. So looking at feelings and not evidence is not valid. Looking at feelings and evidence is. Just feelings don't hold as much weight.

@@DaveJohnsonSCGExcellent response! We all identify with our feelings to a lesser or greater degree, and she in my opinion is not even close to using "doublespeak" here. We just don't want to use our feelings as the main avenue to finding truth in our lives, as she alluded to.

Question: I understand you issues with the LDS Church but what is your stand on the Bible, do you believe the Bible is the word of God?

They still wouldn't be "apostles." The whole thing is a sham.

John why do you condemn(rightfully so) the homophobia and sexism in the church but gleefully stay a member of the Republican Party which does the same? It seems inconsistent and odd and hypocritical.

The comments about the DNA - your initial proposal, according to what you said, completely debunks that there ever were any people who ever migrated here to ancient America from Jerusalem, as outlined in the Book of Mormon. Then you state that later, additional information came forward that was evidence showing that there was, in fact, some people among the Native Americans with DNA origin from the Jerusalem area; so in essence you disproved the first argument, which a reasonable person would believe would give you pause, and wonder what else might not be accurate about any other such, “debunk theories”, but in your case it did not give you pause, contrary to your statement that you’re open to, and even eager for, information that would cast doubt or even outright disprove the basis of your arguments for grievances against the Church. This seems to suggest, that in fact, you really aren’t so interested in having your grievances debunked, and are perhaps instead, quite happy having grievances to hold against the Church that at face value could sound plausible. I suspect, your actual motivation could be someone didn’t do right by you in the Church, or said something hurtful, so on and so forth, and so now you want find any reason that looks and sounds logical as a “good” excuse to leave instead of just considering that any other Church or organization that you may go to, may have the same bad experiences, but it’s just due to our fallen human natures and that that causes us mere mortals to all make mistakes, even the best of us.

And patriarchy is taking its revenge now in political fascism. The democratic ideal is matrilineal. People calling themselves Christians have no beef with Patriarchy. Tho Christian ideals of love and service are again quite feminine or matrilineal. Our Mother Father God seems more balanced, complete and spiritual ❤

Thank you so much for having this discussion. I feel a loving god would not be so ‘partial’ and incomplete as to acknowledge or be expressed by only one gender.
