I watched his first show over on NBC... I was 20, newly married, my husband worked nights so I turned my days around too... on the first night I remember thinking "Well Mr Letterman... show me what you've got". I rocked my babies to sleep with him..I rocked myself to sleep with him! I will miss you David.
David Letterman came onto the scene guns blazing. I was in high school when he began and no one had ever seen anything like him. what's amazing is he built two brand new shows that thrive today. late night on NBC and late show on CBS. they didn't exist before Dave.
In late '89 I wrote to NBC in NY to request tickets for Dave's upcoming on-the-road anniversary tour in Los Angeles. I was absolutely thrilled when I got 2 tickets in the mail. (No internet in those days--snail mail!) A friend and I stood in line for many hours outside Universal Studios, got ushered in and thankfully got some great seats. The show was Feb. '90, a few months before Stevie Ray Vaughan died. His performance was great! Also Paul and the band were super. Dave was funny when the camera was rolling but as soon as there was a commercial break, BAM. He went backstage asap. He has since talked about his bouts w/depression so I understand why he needed some "alone time". I'm so glad I got to see him live before he retired!
I feel the same now about my life. I miss the people that are no longer here and the times we had together. Too much stuff I've learned is suffocating.
He’s eloquent in explaining loss. Our lives are about continuing to learn in the present moment of where we are. No fixed stages for Americans outside of age. He described so well major changes and coming out well after getting hit with the loss and then the grieving and finally the healing.
"5 years from now a nurse will be feeding me rice cereal." Oh boy... it's now 5 years from then and doesn't that seem like a better option than what we're actually facing?
Those last few seconds, "Shrimp puff, care for a shrimp puff?" in that classic emasculate voice he would do. Jeez. Perfect guy to have the show he did. Still miss it
Dave is wearing a Carhartt shirt! Awesome. You will be missed Dave, please let us know what you are up to. Not sure if you use instagram or twitter, but it would be cool to just hear from you from time to time. Good luck and thanks for all the memories.
cliffedward Yes. It should be... regrettably... should have been. It's gone. CBS SHOULD HAVE preserved the Ed Sullivan Theater in mode of The Late Show with David Letterman. God Bless you, David Letterman.
***** Not too sure what he means but what I do know is the sets were dumped. I think Dave's desk went to the Smithsonian. What George may mean is that the stage that Dave was on was not the original. The theatre was a wreck when they took it over and had to be refurbished.
cliffedward There's footage showing scavengers climbing into dumpsters the day after they ended the Late Show. I cannot believe how CBS just trashed the set. They could have at least auctioned some it off for charity (like Yankees Stadium).
"I don't want a shrimp puff" But we want you Dave! Glad he's still making content and not just being fed rice pudding by a day nurse (but he's certainly getting that, too).
David Letterman is a Legend! If you love great comedy, your heart should be a little sad that the Letterman show is over. Thank god for RU-vid. I have all the great interviews. Especially the ones with Martin Short, Nathan Lane, Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin. TV gold if you ask me.
@@markdavies9117 exactly. There’s an interview with the staff who were worried but all they had to do is say they worked for The Late Show and people wanted them.
Late night is horrific now. If you want funny, watch Graham Norton. Dave was the best their was. Carson was legendary at the time...but nobody was like Dave who could interview Robin Williams and just let him go, or some Nobel Nuclear Physicist - and both would be entertaining. Watch these idiots now try to interview someone intelligent. It’s embarrassing.
He seems like a sad man, like he regrets stuff......I know old folks that have retired and seem very happy, Dave does not seem one of them for some reason
+2000Betelgeuse I would disagree with that. You should go see his Interview f at Indy 500 and his Interview with Regis, Oprah and on The view. Dave is not really as unhappy as some think or want too. He had depression at one point but came out that.
