War is always a horrible thing. no matter how glorified it is with the media and video games. My grandfather was supposed to be deployed from reserves to the defense of the main islands but luckily the war ended. He still has his uniform and pictures of him and his group. he counts his blessings every day that he was able to raise a great family and the reason i exist today.

The best thing I feel a war movie can do is condemn the cruelty and madness that is war but commend the bravery it takes for the men and women who fight them. Very few have done it better than Letters From Iwo Jima.

I think one the greater themes of the movie, is showing how the mindset of the Japanese soldiers going through this war, being specifically stationed on that desolate island, is that they will NOT go home. A tough mindset indeed, knowing they don't even have a chance to survive. While on the other hand, the American soldiers, how they're just battling through the war, waiting to go home and get it over with with this war. How they value each soldier's life. Pretty much the comparisons.

Sőt, igazán átérezhetjük, milyen is volt vállalni a reménytelen harcot a többszörös túlerővel, a nyomasztó légifölénnyel, a nagyobb számú páncélossal szemben.

Listened to this while doing research to argue against an over-patriotic Englishman who believes that Axis soldiers do not deserve respect. Found frightening accounts of Americans mutilating dead Japanese soldiers by using their skulls as hood ornaments and other bones as war trophies. They also rarely took Japanese prisoners as the officers at their own will (against orders) shot Japanese dead despite their surrender. They also beat German naval men senselessly to death. Frightening! Love this!

+Starlancer98 I'm no authority but I consider the Japanese genocide of 6,000,000 Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos, and Indochinese during their land grab while conquering the pacific and the 100,000 + allied prisoners of war that were tortured and executed during the allied counter offensive pushing the Japanese back to Japan. As pretty legitimate justification for a war, unless of course you think Japanese lives were more important than other peoples lives and that they had the authority to invade and subjugate sovereign states. Were there honorable soldiers in the Japanese army? Yes to be sure, many like the Germans were simply fighting for the preservation of their families and homes, or were against the war but were drafted. Unfortunately those of these that can be empathized with cannot fight for what ever personal reasons they hold without at the same time fighting for the agenda of their government which was poisonous

it was wise of Clint Eastwood to portray the Japanese side of the Battle of Iwo Jima through this movies. It was actually a spinoff of the earlier movie "Flags of our fathers" of the same battle on the American perspective.

Somehow...from deep inside...I always had this great admiration and respect for the Japanese people. I asked my friends what was their take on Japanese people and they all have the same respect. It comes from a place that I can not describe and neither any of my friends could. It's just a respect and admiration...maybe because they treat their elderly so admirably...

けいじ浅川, this was just wrong. With mechanical shit instead of real warfare, charging reinforced positions for inevitable death? And the size of the opposing G.I.s: 160 vs 180. The last ones were armed with M1s and Thompsons. Were fresh, well-fed, highly and adaptively trained. With extensive artillery support. And Japan eventually got what it was fighting for. But lost too much of genetic potential and heritage.
@honorableeuropeannationali8742
But look what they accomplished. The Japanese are a selfless people and they showed it in WWII. They all gave thier live to protect thier country and posterity and that's commendable enough for me.

Yup.. at the end of the day we all have the same concerns: Chief among them where the next mortgage/rent is coming from.. how many minutes are left on the family cell plan.. and what we're eatin' for dinner tonight. If we only took the time to talk to each other & realize that most of what we believe about each other & each other's intentions is political afront, staged ironically by men with which we have less in common, we'd get along better for realizing just how similar our lives are.

I don’t care what side thought they were right and who claimed the other was evil.. in the end real man fought not all wanted to not all chose to but some did and some expected others to feel the same way about the war they did. But in the end it was a war that both sides lost crazy numbers to and many family we’re striped of love ones. And for those who survived are here now to tell the stories of those who did not. Both side did crazy dishonorable things but in the end their is no good or evil this is only blind loyalty to leaders that justify their agendas in the cost of lives that are not there own. The true hero’s are in both sides with the sacrifice they all made to do what they felt was right. Nothing in war can be justified if it to take another life. This movie shows war has another side to just what we call an enemy as they are human and we all are human. The Japanese have done crazy crazy things in this war but are not the only ones we have done our fair share and so have the Germans but in every war it is the people that fight that are the hero’s regardless of witch side and only leaders are the true enemy.

Sadly, it wasn't shown, why japanese held this little island so recklessly. The reason was simple - Iwo Jima shall (and later) became an airbase for aerial strikes on Japan. On 10 March 1945 USA Airforces had bombed Tokyo from there, causing from 80.000 to 100.000 people. Later with air raids they desolate many other places in japanese homeland. General Kuribayashi was aware of it - and attempt last desperate attack in order to silence airbase as well as save tousands of his countymen. It failed, though. I never have any sympathy for their country and its politic - but I heartly admire the last stand of this people.
