As long as you like the quality more bang for your buck. I've bought commercial Bnls breast very large and liked them. I say grow them big for personal use for sure.

I had one I was going to keep,would eat a lot, got very heavy and started to have problems walking even though it would roam a large area. The feathers around the vent started to drop, not sure why but I felt bad and decided this was inhumane for this breed. When it was processed it weighed in at 10lbs

I wonder how the ones who feed their chickens green tea powder, animal fats and cooking oils do. I know someone in Korea that does this. Never seen the results during butchering but he has huge birds weighing 10 pounds at least they grow huge!! Not sure how much of the weight is meat or fat. I do know that both boosts the egg laying production. Green tea powder also boosts immunity of chickens so they do not get ill or die from many common things that are treated via chemicals. My friend in korea has not had to use any veterinarian or various chemical items that prevent or as cure to many chicken diseases.

Hi John can you please make a detailed video on vaccination of the chicks?.
@farmmarketing
@farmmarketing 5 лет назад
The actual process or the reasons for it. The actual process would require me going to a hatchery because there is no vaccinating that I do on my farm itself.

Do you find any one source for your chicks better than others? First year with chicken tractor lost about half of meat birds ( think hart) but all pullets doing fine same everything else food, water and pasture.
@farmermom
@farmermom 5 лет назад
Thank you, John! Your videos have literally changed our lives. We don't sell but used your plans to build a chicken tractor for our large family here in Maine. We've raised ~170 birds in two years now and getting ready for year three! No more chicken from factory farms for us ;-) We only purchase male chicks, grow out to 8 weeks and get an average close to 6lbs (which is good for us). I've found that summer birds (so during the warmest months for us) do the best and dress out a bit heavier. The spring and fall birds seem to be a bit smaller/lighter.

As a baseline for harvesting chicken the major chicken meat corporations process the birds after six weeks. From hatched egg to processed meat in the freezer for sale in six weeks. These are fryers not broilers.
@kidsplayrabbitry4930

Oura are for our large family so we go 9-10wks and try for 6lbs dressout. Past 10wks is too much feed and high risk it seems of not being able to walk.

I have had 3 batches of Cornish cross birds that I've harvested at the 8 week mark. My birds have averaged nearly 6 lb per bird. Never anything smaller than 4 lb. Several 8 lb or larger. Not sure how there's that much difference.

Here in Czech Republic we have Ross-308, pretty similar to Cornish Cross. I yesterday slaughtered two birds at 7 weeks, 2,8kg and 2,6kg live weight -> 2 and 1,8kg dressed. I will let them to 10 -12 weeks.
