We Switched Chicken Feed... Heres what Happened...
Have your Hens slowed down egg laying? Ours did and then we switched from the cheaper Tractor supply feed to the purina brand and our hens have over doubled their egg production.

I bought some rice at the market... swap meet... old... a little out of date... I cook the bag with whatever veggies I had left over... and made a giant pot of super fun. My chickens now see me coming and come a running... I do this often... about once or twice a week... I get at least one egg or about 20 to 23 a day... doing this... out of 24 hens... We buy just simple scratch... and add extras from the house... We eat... they eat... God is good and they are blessed, as they keep laying and we keep giving them away to others... Thank you Lord for every egg.

One of my good friends who has 60 chickens and 15 ducks said for MONTHS now he has not got a single egg. He used commercial feed from Tractor Supply. I told him about all of this going on, and he went to a local mill where they make dog food and various other types of food for animals and use local ingredients, and he said within 5 days of swapping feed, all his chickens and ducks are producing about an egg a day now. Something is definitely going on. Seems like every day I trust our government and these elites less and less.

Yep. We get our feed, scratch, grit, treats and bedding from the local small, family-owned feed store. We simply bump up the scratch and supplements during winter, so not only do they stay warmer, but egg production hasn't declined hardly at all. We get all our produce locally and they get all the *safe* scraps. Finally, we clean, dry and bake all the eggshells, then break them up as fine as possible and add it back into the feed for calcium.

Most of the issue with lack of production is from unusually early cold weather. If you make compost piles your birds will be able to offset the climate by scratching up extra food and your problem will be solved. Also, if you feel generous, trim the fat from your steaks and chops and feed it RAW. Chickens are omnivores and appreciate the extra protein and fat in the winter. Problem solved.

Last September Nestle partnered w a fake meat company called Impossible Meat. They’re building a new manufacturing plant in NC it’ll be the largest US producer of lab created beef, chicken & pork. Seems logical or at least probable that they’d want to slow egg production to force people into buying fake meat since hens wouldn’t be laying eggs & chickens wouldn’t be hatching. In winter, I buy the birds cabbage, any other green leafy vegetables, I give them cut up apples, safe table scraps,....sometimes a a small amount of dog food , soaked. I make sure they have a dust bath, consisting of saltless sand, wood ashe , diatomaceous earth. I also have oyster shell, in separate container free choice, and gravel , FOR their gizzard. Right there with you. Most of these complaints are from people who think cheap feed is the answer. I never had an issue because I free range and have several compost piles. You likely have either an Ameraucana or Easter Egger hen in your flock…or at least one that’s a cross. Ameraucana’s lay eggs like the one you’re getting, and the EE’s egg color varies more from blue to olive green. Both breeds have fluffy cheeks and most often have beards too. Their combs are small. I usually always have 1 or 2 Ameraucana hens in our flock as they’re docile, friendly and hardy. They are just turning 10 weeks, but have had them on organic Scratch and Peck, first the starter crumbles since a few days after I brought them home at 5 days old, and now the grower (whole grains) since they turned 8 weeks. They are out of the coop & run every day, foraging for bugs and greens in the back yard, and are just really beautiful healthy girls. Am adding flax & chia for treats, and will be hanging a produce holder in their coop shortly, so they can access apples, and other greens at will (someone suggested cabbage, so will be adding that, too). Have a designated dust bath, with sand, chickie dust & a small amount of diatomaceous earth, set up for them, and various roosting bars. Very excited to see what type of egg production we will get with these ladies. Will come back and update once they start laying. I will add that personally, I would never use anything Purina or ...Egglands Best .. or any of those "national' brands [same goes for my dogs or cat, either...my senior dog (chihuahua terrior) is 17 and still going strong; have had him on a human grade, organic &/or non GMO food for most of his life]. I live in northeast Michigan's lower peninsula, very close to Lake Michigan. We have a good amount of cold and a crazy amount of lake effect snow. Even with clear weather forecasts it's common for our area to snow steadily for days at a time! We average 12-18 laying hens, our rooster Johnny, and we've enjoyed raising a few khaki campbell ducks that have been surprisingly a standout crowd at our farm 😁 I was a committed Tractor Supply consumer. I love the option to get all the big bags of feed, scratch grain, bedding, oyster shell, everything we could possibly need. I've always had great egg production, and they continue to lay in the winter months. We do give them a good amount of kitchen scraps and extra garden produce. We actually started growing some crops just for our birds lol I do love them, sometimes too much maybe but I don't care lol We are lucky to live close to many Amish farms and started buying the feed they produce. Since they make this feed for their farms as well and we have birds in the same environment it just makes the most sense. After talking with them about the ingredients we realized they already added everything my birds need so I'm not premixing dusty feed in a separate container. I know not everyone has available help close by, but if you can find large scale self sufficient farms near you it's a good idea to ask who sells feed or where they buy it. It's probably around the same price too. We paid $17 for a 40lb bag Oct 1st 2023, not bad at all 😁

I heard that some factory in Canada that makes a mineral of some sort that a lot of the national brands use had burnt down or something happened and most food is now being made without this mineral and that’s why the chickens quit laying. It’s been a huge problem over the last 6 months. We live in Ohio and had the same problem with the hens not laying. The blue egg layer is more than likely an Americana chicken also called Easter egged and they have a little tuff off feathers coming out by their ears. That’s your blue egg layer.

I also give them a red solo cups worth of dried black fly larvae so I don't have to give them calcium supplement. There's enough in the larvae. And I give them all over our table and vegetable scraps. My local farm store has a steady supply of the bird seed at all times I love them.

It's your Americana that laid the blue/green egg! I had the same issue with tractor supply feed, only they quit laying all together, I started mixing my own feed and cooking some pinto beans and wheat pasta for them. The next day I had eggs, after cooking for them. I was shocked. So I went to local feed store and bought some grains and made my own mix. Glade to hear that Dumar is a better feed, I do miss the discounts at tractor supply, since I buy a lot of feed between sheep, ducks, chickens, turkey, other fowl, my guardians, and house dogs!

We have used a higher protein feed for years as we found the hens lay more eggs. We used Nutrinia 22% for several years as we had ducks and turkeys to feed too. Now we just have 5 old hens. One is a white leghorn, she is 6+ years old, and lays 4 eggs per week. Currently we are using Naturewise All flock 18% protein. When your chickens molt once a year, they will recover faster and begin laying sooner if you're feeding a higher protein food.

Heard of the problem with feed and switched them to, weirdly, dog food. WIthin a week they were laying again. Now we are getting about 7 eggs a day (from literally zero with 9 laying hens) and that should go up as our young ones should be maturing soon...

It blows my mind that this is happening outside of Europe. In Europe, we don't use "feed". It's the worst thing you can do to your chickens. Use grains. Whole grains. And in spring and summer don't shy away from feeding them literal blades of grass as a "snack", or even green onion. We did this for 12 years and we consistently got 2 eggs a day PER hen! They were so happy, one of them layed a "matrioshka" (I think you'd call it?) - a huge 3-3,5 inch egg that has another fully formed one inside it. I miss those hens, and George, the dumb-ass rooster who'd always tidbit and give all his food to his "wives".
@hawksgirl4948
@hawksgirl4948 20 дней назад
May I ask what type of grains?
@Mayhamsdead
@Mayhamsdead 20 дней назад
@@hawksgirl4948 They especially love sun-flower seeds. Though, you'd have to mix them with something else, since, just like with humans, they have a "taste fatigue" threshold which ends up with them eating less and producing less. What we used to do is mix the sunflower seeds with corn grind and water. This way they had an oat-meal like consistency to their meal, and got some hydration out of it too. In fact, I think any chicken would prefer a multi-grain "porridge" to dry feed. That's just one example, but you can try any mix of 2 or more seeds depending on what you have available in your region and what is least costly in relation to the seasons. I/we don't claim to be expert chicken nutritionists, but this is what worked out for us. Oh, and (this may be controversial, but) - if we noticed they were lacking in calcium, we would on occasion feed them eggshells as well. Keeps their beaks, feathers and eggs they produce a lot healthier. Hope this helps!

Hello, we have a small farm here in Pennsylvania. We have somewhere around 50 chickens. We used to feed purina, then my flock stopped laying completely. They went 2-3 months over summer without laying an egg. I read somewhere they did a test on purina feed and they only came up with 5 percent protein. No good for egg production, needs to be around 16 percent. The bags actually say 16. Long story short, I switched to a local feed mill, i mix my own feed and add soybean meal for extra protein. Eggs everyday.

Chickens don’t usually lay eggs in the winter. Some do, but most don’t. Not enough daylight hours. They start again in the spring. So, make sure it is the feed and not simply the time of year. However, I agree those cheaper feeds filled with corn and soy aren’t doing your chickens any favors. Corn and soy are cheap, but not what chickens like to eat. If you feed any type of whole or cracked grains, you will find the corn is usually just scattered around for the wild birds to eat. My chickens go after the sunflower seeds first, any milo or wheat second. They ignore corn unless there is nothing else.

My chickens have been eating a whole grain organic feed from a localish producer. They also stopped laying early October and just started up again at the beginning of February. Last year it was the beginning of January. So, not saying it's just the feed. The weather, sunlight, day length and age of your hens all contribute to the lack of eggs. It's just something you deal with. When hens are in their first year of laying, they often don't stop laying their first winter, so we get a false sense of the continuity of production. Live and learn I guess. One of my hens is 8 years old, and is still pooting out an egg now and then. Amazeballs. As for your one blue egg, it may be that pretty dark laced hen with the reddish neck, small comb, or may be a grey one. The blue/green legs make blue/green eggs- it's possibly based on copper stores from birth, as the coloring gets more pale as the hens age. But one of my grey hens lays blue eggs- if I hadn't seen her do it myself, I would not have guessed that she did, as her legs are yellow, not blue/green. Fun with chickens!

I give my chickens a variety of food, in addition to their commercial feed. I had 11 eggs in a single day from 7 hens. That isn't typical for them, but I have at least 4 hens that laid 2 eggs in a day. I give them vegetable scraps, let them eat weeds and grass, roses, bugs, occasionally a can of cat food, give them their grit, oyster shell (thru go through a lot of that!), a good varied scratch. I let them nest in a cardboard box, which they prefer. Nothing special, just flaps folded down, and I fill it with pine shavings with diatomaceous earth. I let them run around during the day in the yard. They've decimated the bug population in my yard, and turned them into eggs. I use peat moss for their flooring, and I change their water a couple times a day. I had a concern with my last flock about one or two of them laying twice a day occasionally. I wondered if that was OK for their health. I still wonder. I met 1 other lady who had a couple of chickens that also laid twice a day occasionally. Her hens are a couple of years old, and she said that she's healthy and seems fine. I have a mix of breeds that are dual purpose, and they seem healthy and happy. I don't handle them a lot, but they do come when called, and I do check them occasionally. I would suggest checking for predators, be sure your chickens have a safe place to roost, have a variety of food, free choice grit, and oyster shell (when it disappears, replace it!) Spend some time with your birds, especially when they are young. Don't baby them too much when they are young. Acclimate them to normal noises when they are young. Talk to them, teach them to come when called (give them a snack when you call them). It doesn't take much effort, but I feel it's important. *Hint: they love grapes and watermelon, especially in the summer!) Remember, if you've raised them from chicks, they look to you for security! Allow them to run around, give them something interesting to do, such as giving them a new vegetable to try, a new fruit, etc. to keep them busy and entertained. Altering their diet when it gets cold outside so they can keep themselves warm and comfortable is important. If it's freezing outside, a heat source helps. A solar heat lamp is perfect. Remember, light is important for not only egg production but healthy bones and mental health, as well. If you are wondering about your feed, look to see what is in it! Different feeds for different weather. Too much corn in hot months isn't a good thing, but in winter, it may be helpful, BUT in the wild, ask yourself if they'd be eating corn? Growing a lettuce and vegetable patch for them , as letting them in that area after it's grown up, is a good thing. They like meal worms and soldier fly large is a nice protien treat. If They've been eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, be sure they are getting plenty of balanced amino acids/protein. Probiotics are great for them as well. Give them a balanced diet. Carotene is important, too, so be sure they have good mineral sources and foods rich in vitamin A, naturally. Your yolks will be darker and presumably have more vitamins and minerals, too. Happy birds seem to lay more eggs. If their production is off, look to see what might be the problem. Diet, predators, safety, a feeling of safety, water sources, something new to explore (generally a treat of something new) are all important. Oh! They also like groats, but be wary of too much grain, and avoid bread, beans, apple seeds in cores, etc. I hope this helps! If you have a feed issue or think you do, I'd analyze the feed or have your feed analyzed in a lab. You might check with your local university extension to see if they can do an analysis. Never feed your chickens moldy foods or old foods you wouldn't feel comfortable eating yourself! Your eggs will taste better, they'll likely be healthier, and you will be as well when you consume them. I hope this is helpful. Best of luck with your chickens! They are remarkable animals but rely on us for a healthy and safe environment. They view us as their "mom".

I bought a different commercial feed from a local feed mill. No improvement. I bought the feed mill's mix called "Gamecock" and they improved their laying somewhat. I noticed that the hens wouldn't eat the soybeans in the gamecock mixture. Now they're leaving the corn and wheat behind and waste about half their feed. I've ground up cabbage cores to feed them as a supplement and it helps. I can't allow them to free range like a chicken is supposed to do, because of hawks, coyotes, and the neighbor's dogs. 😖 I'm sure the laying would improve if I could let them scratch.

We had the opposite problem - we were feeding our hens the expensive feed and they were laying good until the beginning of last summer (2022) when suddenly their egg production dropped dramatically down to about 3 or 4 eggs per day (we have 14 hens). Other people we know were suddenly having the same problem! We then switched to Tractor Supply's Producer's Pride at the recommendation of another person who has success with it. Within about a week after switching to Producer's Pride (and to date), we started seeing 14 eggs per day and sometimes 18-20. So not sure what's going on with this brand - why it works for some but not for others, but it's working for us and it's going on a year from when we first switched to Producer's Pride. Go figure 🤷

So they probably put a bunch of fillers in that producers pride chicken feed, which is probably like ground up wood chips, and corn pulp. Which isn’t really nutritious for chickens to give them what they need to lay eggs they need a lot of calcium. You can crush up old eggshells and put it in their food for calcium because that’s what shells are made out of. Also another thing is usually September October is when chickens stop laying a lot is because they could be molting to get their fluffy coat of feathers for the winter.

The americauna hens lay green to bluish eggs and the hens are typically a speckled dark and medium brown with each feather having both tints on them. Many years ago I was at a local plant nursery and they had a pallet of 20 lb bags of wild bird seed. At 25 cents per bag I bought nearly all of it. I would pour a bag in the chicken feeder every other day and from 24 hens I was getting 23 to 24 eggs each day. Normally I get fairly good egg production during the winter but I do have an overhead light over the chicken yard. Hens are a long day egg producer and if the days get very short they may stop laying.
