I don't think there was anyone better than Level 42 live 1980 - 1987 ish. It's easy to forget what an amazing drummer Phil is too. As musicians we all show boat it up front and forget about the guy on the pots and pans behind us keeping it all going.
Looking back at those years I now realize that Boon and Phil Gould were pillars for the band as much as Mark and Mike. One of the greatest bands ever existed.
@@petermeichan3160 What's the story about Paul Crockford? I have seen many interview with Phil and I was always of the opinion the brothers left at the same time (roughly) but for different reasons. This is how I always thought of it, Phil was just dismayed at the move to more pop sound as well as things as the use of sequencers. Boon's departure was about his health.
@@steevidrums Crockford was all about money, when Level 42 first came together it was all about the music, yes its became more poppy and Phil ( as the group was his band ) didn't like that, crockford got in Marks ear and convinced him the brothers didn't fit the groups look any more, and of course cutting phil out of the final mixing was the last straw, thats how i understand it, i never brought another record after Running in the Family
@@petermeichan3160 I gather he was their manager? Paul Crockford I mean. Phil was such a great drummer, and while Gary Husband and Pete Ray Biggin are amazing drummers too, there’s a certain vibe to Phil’s playing which just completes it for me. Boon also a great player, sorta under used in the band but would make every part count.
Brother and I would pop over to Heston Motorway Services in 1982......I was 24, he was 21.....this was playing on the cassette stereo in the car.......just superb. Amazing band.... RIP the incredible Boon Gould.
Saw them live a lot at this time. They’d use this as a “warm up “ glance over at each other, smile, and you knew it would be a good gig. Invariably, it was.
@@monsterjazzlicks Gary Husband is an amazing musician, no question. I'm talking about "feel' and groove. Phil Gould is unique and IMHO PRB and GH have never come close to emulating his feel.
Level 42 in full flow are breathtaking, their melodic harmonies are legendary. To those who have seen them live recently, so glad you had an amazing time! Love reading comments about their live shows. One of the greatest 'studio' and 'live' bands of their generation.
I remember a 1982 concert in Holland, i took the wrong entrance door. i thought "strange no folks here?" Anyway we went to the bar to take a drink. 4 guys were also sitting on the stools, talking english. I asked "are you the band members of Level 42"? Mike confirmed. Untill that moment i never had seen a picture of them. Friendly guys. Which door we took? The food and beverage door!!!!! 30 minutes later on the fan's came in.
I finally understand why Boon and Phil left the band in Level 42 pop era!! But that doesn't mean their pop years (from World Machine and later) are bad. They're still good but in different way and style
Last Wednesday they played this iconic Jazz Funk number in Paradiso. They brought the house down! After a breathtaking 'second half' of the show (after the acoustic break) they played Hot Water, Starlight, Heathrow, Love Games... Hot water was played in the vain of the Shep Pettibone remix (inclusing one of the most legendary funk breaks ever.) . The intro to Love Games was something else: Mark played the Bass beyond funk. Level 42:32 years on the road and still getting better all the time
Not sure this(my favourite)tune was but I may have been there. Saw them first in Loughborough in May'81. Followed them having bought The Early Tapes 'til they became commercial. Tracy killed it for me. Thanks Robert your a star now but more of one then. xxx
Were they by chance on tour alongside King Crimson? I’ve watched their 1982 Munich concert a few times and recognize the background of the stage. Wouldn’t be too surprising now that Mark King works with Adrian Belew and KC now has two Level 42 vets.
Fantastic!!! Thank goodness for RU-vid to bring us stuff like this. What I would give to go back in time and see this live... Thanks immeasurably, Funkgalaxy!
@FunkGalaxy, *Thanks* for the upload! Since this upload, there's been one uploaded that is of better quality: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O5DbELKpX_s.html *:)*
Not only was Daley Thompson the best decathlete in the world........but he played a mean keyboard in Level 42 inbetween athletic competitions, who knew?
I still remember my buddy named John, made a slap/pop motion with his hand, followed by thumbs up........to Mike Lindup!!! Mike said, oh ehm (discrete pointing with index finger) he (Mark) is our bass player. Mr Lindup was probably thinking:" are these guys fans, our do they work here at the catering dept, haha! Those were the days, Hanenhof 1982 Geleen, The Netherlands.....
@alextw13jf -very true. This was and will always be L42's best lineup. But, everyone knows that without Mark there would not be a Level42-regardless of any of the band lineups.
Voor mij is het Steve Harris, Victor Wooten, Larry Graham en Les Claypool :) Maar Mark King heb ik recent ontdekt, en wat ik tot nu toe al gehoord en gezien heb, een top van een muzikant :D
edan anjing sumpah hade ......maen bass na daek aing jiga kieu heu heu...deuh.asa jiga preman komentar teh heu heu bae ah da moal ngartieun si mark king mah..heu heu
Meaningless chord after meaningless chord. I think that Gould split before he went insane with this stuff. The touring demands had to have been insane. Rock slavery.
