Yep I liked the Level 42 of 1984. True Colours, the Hot Water mastermix and the tour that produced the live album A Physical Presence (I got to see them during it at Newcastle City Hall)....plus Mark's solo album Influences. For the fan it was great....for the band, record company pressure, sales and ambitions not quite reaching fruition. I often say it....the punter gets the better deal, just enjoying the music,
Phil Gould is one of the most hardcore drummer this planet ever seen. Hes a kind of it's own, pfunking epic drums in my book Boon brothers, lindup, King, pure quality, and yes i was at this gig, Epic.
Pure genius. Sound, mix and gear is perfect. I do like some of the later songs too but without a doubt this era was just out of this world. Line up never been bettered either. So...I agree totally.
YOU LUCK OUT !!!!!!!!! We were going to see them in 1986 at The Palace in Hollywood but there was an earthquake & my sister didn't want to risk an aftershock in that old building so we forfeited our tickets. We figured we'd catch them on their next tour but they never returned to CA in the 80s. I did get to see them at The Grove in 2010 but man alive I wish I could have seen the original lineup in their heyday .... I would have gone anyway but my sister insisted we don't.... there never was an aftershock either! 😡
@@OneHope4Heaven That old Chesnut eh Sunshine? Sister not wanting to risk an Aftershock?, Well no one is falsing them down Her neck! She could of had a Hooch or even stayed off the alcohol pops altogether and You could of enjoyed a wonderful gig from Britain's ( and indeed The Earth's ) Finest. 👍😄
Most drummers could not cope with MK percussive style. Phil Gould however simply evolved into one of the best drummers of all time. This is a special musical chemistry that is entirely unique. Awesome MK and PG
Yeah Mate, Mark and Phil just killed it eh and Boon and Mike layered on top to make this lot sublime? I was always hoping to see the original fab 4 live but obviously isn't going to happen now. The Best Band. Have a great Bank Hols Fella.👍
Superb musicianship - from each and every one of these guys - one better than the other. Tight unit. One of my fave L42 tracks. These guys do not disappoint in any way shape or form. Thanks for posting!!
I was lucky enough to see em twice in 83,just before they switched from pursuing accidents to grubbing after money & they were fantastic. Makes me laugh to hear to blokes at work say what big fans they are/were,when they've never even heard thier best stuff!
One of the most exciting and entertaining bands of all time. Live they are the best! Superb musicians and fantastic material to chew on! Gotta get my hands on this DVD!
Thank you, Kolbola, for posting. This is superb. Decent sound too. I agree, GTAmediaproductions, the gould brothers were so good, the heart and soul of the band. Though it has to be said that Gary Husband and the other sidemen on Retroglide 06 did some amazing versions of 'Love Games', and 'Chinese Way'. Well said, though.
LUCKY !! Level 42 was the best in the early 1980's. World Machine is when they started to deviate. I am still a fan, though !! I listen to them almost daily !! Soooo groovy !
The best jazz funk band EVER. Mark King was the musician along with Bernard Edwards, Chic and of course Jaco who inspired me to learn to play the bass guitar.
One of my all time Level 42 favorites, among many. What a monster rhythm section!! Sure would be great if they did another tour with the original line up.
I saw Level 42 play at the end of October. The modern lineup is fantastic; they work extremely well together. Mike still uses the same electric piano that he has in this video! They performed this track live, and it was fantastic. They also did an album-perfect version of Turn It On, which was really surprising. They also played The Machine Stops which, until this tour, hadn't been performed live since about 1984. They are a fantastic band, if a little less energetic than in this vid!!
Pristine transparent bass is technically amazing...but can't draw you in like old school honky bass... ...vests, comby pants, Doc Martens, insane groove triggered face pulling/jumping around...
Awesome song! I'd love to see this lineup together again. It was the best one IMO. Mark was sooo good even then, that it makes me either want to woodshed even harder or quit bass altogether!!! LOL
Could n,t agree more.Phil Gould,s style leaves so much room for Mark, just so solid.I don,t think Gary Husband is better or worse , just very different.Get on with it Mark ,Canada needed you!!.
I seen em live in '83 at the Bochum Zeche in Germany gig, we krauts made 'em coming :-) I'm proud i seen em at a 400 people gig burning the roof. Ill drums, what an animal!
so much better and tighter with the original line up, Phil's drumming is far superior to all the others that have played with the band, i know we've lost boon, but mark should get phil back on drums.🤞
The "hand slap" style of playing bass here by Mark King is superb . It really is both musical and adds percussion . Mark and others attribute american bassist Larry Graham for inventing the technique . When Sly and the Family Stone first started forming they had no drummer . The group's bassist Graham created the style to give some percussion and beat to the band
MK's playing from 06.10 is just sublime, the sound he creates is that unique combination of his huge talent and that unmistakeable JayDee sound.........I so wish he'd ditch those tinny Status Kingbasses which are not worthy of his musicianship :-(
There is an old theory when it comes to bass playing and drumming. If the bass line is simple, the drummer can play more, when the bass line is more complicated, the drummer plays more simplistic. It is a good rule of thumb to go by.
I came back here again after watching a performance of the same song from 2009, wondering why the later one wasn't hitting the spot (apart from it not being the classic lineup, for one thing).....and now I'd sum it up why THIS one DOES. It's because it's FAT!!! Mark's bass sound, the kick drum/the snare, Mike's Rhodes, Boon's guitar.....the compression on the sound even. It's tight AND FAT. That's the funk fusion I like anyway. Sorry present lineup, you can't touch this!! The whole DVD is VERY worth it btw.
Because the latest sound mixing (app. since 2006-2008 to nowadays) is overcompressed, the bass sound seems to came only from the line, not from the lineµphoned amp speaker, the bass EQ settings is too treble focused, too perfect, the drum is sparkly and the ambient is missing. Since around 2006, every live recording from Level 42 is too perfect, empty and sterile.
