In this weeks video we review the barrel steamer I use and I show how easy it is to build. I recommend this over the sauna steamer I covered in a previous video.

@@cactushatmushrooms3677 Hey Joe, great vids. Was wondering if you may be able to show yr grow rooms, especially interested if you insulate to maintain temperature? Im based in the uk which can be quite seasonal, so im thinking insulation may help with the seasonal swing in temps. Do you use a heater in winter and an AC in summer? Oh, and do you monitor co2 and fae ? Loads of questions, hope to see further great vids , Happy shrooming !

@@wande.r Ill put it on the list. I will absolutely make a video on that. The short version is I've insulated my garage and use a split unit from Mr. Cool to control the temp in the garage. I personally dont use a c02 monitor because I dont see the point for smaller grows like mine. The mushrooms tell you all you need to know.

My next video will be a follow up to this one. Just to clarify, the barrel is only to produce steam. No blocks get loaded into it. It's only purpose is to pump steam into another vessel of your choice. I pump mine into a 300 gallon cattle trough like many of the popular growers. It's a perfect mid range set up until one can afford a large autoclave.

Nevermind... looks like Dernord is out of the 1", so the listing just defaults to the 1/2". Ended up snagging one from Metaland. I'm going to try to find a large stock pan (~40qt?) instead of a barrel. It'd be nice to find a stainless steel barrel or a brewer's vessel of some kind.

wiring the dedicated lines requires 2 double breaker slots, 4 slots in total. You probably don't have this. You can also get a special kind of breaker that has 4 switches, two and two connected, that only take up a double breaker slot, but those are *expensive* and are only available with certain breaker box brands. Wiring the breakers into the breaker box will require you to expose very deadly and freely open power strips and you will either need to turn off mains power at the breaker panel during installation or risk frying yourself to a crisp with a very short yet very painful death. Other than that, for 5500 watts on 240v is 23 amperes or 25 amperes on 220v. You will require a 30 to 35 amp breaker at least to power those elements, but be sure to use the manufacturer's recommendations. I recommend #6 AWG gauge wire for the line voltage for redundancy. It's a chonky boy so expect it to be hard to bend and rather unwieldly. Use electrical whips or conduit to sheath your wire. Always use a double-pole switch rated for high amperes. A single-pole switch will turn the system off, but the wires will always be live, making maintenance scarier. Dedicated disconnect switches are the safest, but a breaker switch without ampere protection can work too. However, in the HVAC field, I've had a history of breakers being used as disconnect switches being turned off and then never turning on again, requiring a repair, so I'm partial to disconnect switches myself. Also, if you don't know any of what I just said yeah, go hire an electrician real fast, and spend the cost of labor for the safety and warranty of a professional's work.

Hey Joe, thanks for this brother, it's awesome. Question Joe, why do you need a 30 gallon barrel for the steam. Would something smaller not work just as well. Thanks, John.....Punta Gorda
@cactushatmushrooms3677
@cactushatmushrooms3677 Год назад
The main reason is that it was modeled after this Eric Myers version. A smaller vessel could work but may be more difficult to fit multiple elements to achieve enough power to steam larger containers. There are people however that use honey pots with one 9kw element and do fine. I prefer the extra kw of two elements so the substrate gets to temp quickly before fermentation takes hold of the substrate. Hope this helps.

@cactushatmushrooms3677

I drilled the hole for the intake to ensure the elements would be submerged. Truthfully you only need the water to cover the elements a little. My water line sits several inches above the elements which makes it take longer to produce stream but I don't mind waiting an extra 10 minutes

These brewers fittings are threadless and press together. A tri clamp keeps them pressed together. The heating element also functions in this fashion. At one point in the video I show how they press together. Parts list in description should still be current.
@jeromejalibat3951
@jeromejalibat3951 2 года назад
The 2 heating elements he uses are 4500W which is 4.5KW so 4.5 units of electricity in Australia 1 unit cost 0.3 cents and hour. So a run for 20h to sterilize 40 bags will cost you. (4.5x0.3)x2 = $2.7. Times that by 20h, 2.7x20= $54 a run for 40bags. Do 3 runs a week that's $162 just for your barrel. Add to that expenses your air-conditioning for your grow room and you got your self a $1000+ a month just for those two items. I run mine on a 2.2KW full power for 1h and reducer the power to 70% for 19h and it works fine.
@cactushatmushrooms3677
@cactushatmushrooms3677 2 года назад
I'm not good with math in terms of what it costs in electricity, but keep in mind the trough holds a lot more than 40 blocks. If you really wanted you could fit 160 blocks in a cattle trough (this one is 300 gallons). Making the $54 more than worth it. Youre absolutely right about reducing the power. You could unplug one element once your blocks are up to temp. Just make sure youre measuring core temp with a probe.

Those things over here in the UK are expensive as hell, like £12-15 for a small bag for what's essentially, a £1 tops value in actual product then YOU still have to pay your own postage which for bulky heavy bags, can cost just as much as the goddamn bags themselves. This would pay for Itself within a decent day on ebay/etsy, then a little advertising, $50--100 on a graphic designer for packaging and advertising and a domain name and you have yourself a ready made professional mushroom business ☺️

Are you just plugging the elements in and running at full power (5500W x 2) for the entire 24 hours? My apologies if I missed something.
@cactushatmushrooms3677
@cactushatmushrooms3677 3 года назад
Nice to hear from you David. I definitely forgot to add B-Roll of the steamer itself running sorry about that. I currently dont use any timer, thermostat or PID controller. I do long runs like you mentioned. In speaking with other cultivators around the country over the years I learned there are many that did the measurement once and I just simply follow those times they recommend. I currently steam for 18 hours with a load of 140 blocks at a time and experience no contamination. It may work with even less time. The goal is 200 F for 6-8 hours of core temperature. If you want to be sure you can measure using a temp probe in a bag. I just havent found the need to measure it myself as greater minds have already done the work.

I have suggestion for leakage problem. You must rubber vad mean, rubber ring red and black color inside and outside to block leakage. Use sealer paste, before placing it. You observe stainless steel electric cattle, you will understand. No need of buying stainless steel drum for steaming. Use wood at baseline to spread of electric current. Keep teseter to check electricity flow as a precaution. Another suggestion is for rusting of iron drum. First Purchase dry coaltar used for making road. You heat in drum of 20 liter by putting on fire. You take one cloth wrapped it around wood. You paint your iron drum with hot coaltar. It doesn't smell after some time. Last longer. Don't use wet coaltar it's useless. Second Paint your drum antiwater paint used for making wood bathtub. Water doesn't stick to paint. You ask hardware shops or surf on net. I have watched vedio,people have made bathroom inside van and used this paint to protect wood from water. Thanks for such nice idea. Namh shivay. Dear friend, If ever you will notice electric current is flowing on the drum, that means your electric rod is having cracks, you purchase one magnify glass and check broken parts. In such cases please change the electric rod. Another suggestion is. Suppose if you want to use for longer periods, the electric socket becomes hotter and melt, In such cases use ceramic plugs for connectivity. Another option is ...keep extra rod connections, keep closing rod after one or two hours usage. Keep it close for hour to 30 minutes. The electric connection will not become hot and melt. I have received lots of problems with electricity, I use wooden stick for closing and opening of switches. Namh shivay. Dear friend, I want you experiment with steam instead of fogger for fast production of mashroom during winter. The plants also want little bit hotter atmosphere. Namh shivay.
