Very interesting. I like the probable outcome if you can sell. More than that as a financial professional with his face stuck on three screens the thought of really being able to do something with my hands and farm in a controlled environment is attractive. Then I ended up going well, if some is good then more is better. Then I looked at the cost of labor and said cool, let automate this baby. Capital is what I do; so after a couple of hundred thousand spent I could be producing ten thousand pounds a week. Now I am a factory and have to sell all of that, so we build the place in large urban environments so we can deliver to big customers. Now we have tucks running around and a big payroll. Sure, we are making a lot of money but to become really self-sustaining and able to pay for all of that I have now killed all the fun. Worse, I now have my face stuck in three screens with my headphones on. Oh well.
so, you lift your shelves and carry them into and out of the tent WITH bags on them? What's that, like 100kg at least? Surely this will also damage the mylar tent zipper and opening..
Correct. I would take the blocks off the top shelf first so they didnt fall. Then lift one side at a time into the tent. I'm a small dude and more than capable but understand you or someone may not be able to do that. You could always just carry each block in there individually and transfer. Zipper is fine if your shelves are arranged for less friction.
@@cactushatmushrooms3677 Thank you for the reply, I'm hoping I can do the same as it's a lot of extra labour not being able to wheel shelves straight from incubation into the grow tent. My shelves are wider and taller so probably not feasible as they will carry more load.. - FYI, I'm a mushroom farmer in Malaysia inspired by the likes of your self and other peeps like Southwest mushrooms, Myers mushrooms etc. The market here is still mostly stuck in conventional oyster farming in open sheds (tropical weather) . Thank you for the inspirations!
The machine that measures humidity. I recommend you set the range between 72 and 88. So it turns on below 72 and off at 88. I think 88 as the high end is good and feel 85 would be too low for the high end.
@@cactushatmushrooms3677 Now it make sense. Appreciate your answer. That’s a quite a big gap. Usually RU-vidrs recommend 2-3% , but by looking at your mushrooms a specially lions mane, I can trust you on that. Can you share how you control your humidity? Not easy to find a good quality responsive sensor
@@Artem-rh4yz For a tent just get a house of hydro set up. They sell the humidity controller. I used to use a 12 disk fogger with the whilli brand humidity controller.
I like how you get right to the point, I swear you're from New York City from my neck of the woods or since you're in Florida you've been around a bunch of New Yorkers your whole life, great job brother 👍
Hey Brother I went to many years of school in Tampa. I went for my Bs., Master;s, and PhD in chemical engineering. I lived on Siesta key and hit the beach every day at 3 pm. I miss Tampa and Florida so badly. We definitely need to get together sometime.Lots of great ideas.
Hey brotha, I'm just wondering if you're still growing on these pine pellets and if so how is it going? I'm just a couple hours from you and trying to get masters mix is ridiculous when we're talking shipping etc.
I used to grow mushrooms when I was in high school My father stopped me from growing shiitake mushrooms because I was making too much money and he thought I would not go to college. I went to university all the way to PhD in chemical engineering and now I really hate it. I am really thinking about getting back into it.
Sounds like every hobbyist turn into a business. Thank you for being so real. People say, do what you love and love what you do... Those people have never owned a business 😂
What about the toxicity? I heard that pine might transfer some of its toxins to mushroom and it might be not the best idea to eat them. Not sure if its legit tho
I've heard similar things but havent noticed anything different about flavor and no complaints. Growers better than I have done it before. I am of the belief the pelleted pine works and possibly not fresh pine. Perhaps the pelletizing process makes it work.
Tried pouring my first plates a few days ago. Poured way too hot. Had tons of condensation and everything is super contaminated. Not sure if its from all the water or something else. Still working in a SAB which sucks. Flow hood build coming up soon. Ordered a temp gun. Stored poured plates in sleeve they came in with end taped back up. Inoculated 4 plates that were stored separately and thy were contaminated as well. Do you think excess condensation alone can cause all the contamination or would you be looking at other factors first? Thanks
Hey Alicia this unit has treated me very well and the probe has lasted a year straight so far which is crazy. www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Waterproof-Bluetooth-Thermometer-Rechargeable/dp/B07WXQWD3Y?pd_rd_w=fSHem&content-id=amzn1.sym.62bf6161-8bd0-4857-85d6-e30435da42bd&pf_rd_p=62bf6161-8bd0-4857-85d6-e30435da42bd&pf_rd_r=NMT4W53VH2W8H2PEDR14&pd_rd_wg=Jg9xs&pd_rd_r=68b0efb7-cc59-49f2-aa76-71bc48eb95fe&pd_rd_i=B07WXQWD3Y&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_grid_rp_0_50_i
I can do them most weeks. However, were in the new farm currently in Brooksville and the sale I ran during the time of the video is over. If you're still interested though send me an email at cactushatmushrooms@gmail.com.
Stupid details, but such solid content man. Your videos on barrel steamers, consults, and just the business side of things are such solid, no-nonsense knowledge. Thank you for the time and effort you put into them. By the way.. I am about to do 50 plates and had to re-reference this video now that I got my temp gun LOL
I noticed you are not running a PID or any kind of temperature controller. Have you had any problems with that? Those things are expensive and if I can get by without buying one right now I totally will.
Do you keep the bottom vents open for fresh air or so your exhaust fan isnt working so hard? Also, do you get bugs coming in through the open vents or through the exhaust duct, or is the duct a non issue since you run it 24/7? Thanks. Great channel. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for noticing. I think I was too excited to be making videos during these times and it turned some people off so I had to level myself out a bit.
Thank you for the honest talk! Liked and subscribed without even checking further the channel. My honeymoon phase is fading out and I start to think about how would my curent and future investments bring something in return. I started one month ago with a lions mane lq syringe. I grew more lq, made some grain spawn, 2 decent petri, attempts of cloning other species, growing molds of course, all good experiences to learn from. I have also spent time watching videos, reading some P. Stamets and doing diy's. The goal for now is to grow for myself and will see if this can be a profitable side thing. Anyway, I'm far of leaving my job over this but mycology is a nice world. I'm sure you will keep the good. Greetings from Romania!
This is awesome 👍 If I were to do this, say in my garage or backyard, would there be a high risk of contamination transporting bags down intk my basement or is it fine since the bags are semi-vacuum sealed? Thanks
There is definitely a smell. I find it pleasant but not everyone does. I dont recommend doing this in an enclosed space unless there is really good ventilation. The steam that comes out of the trough will ruin everything in the garage.
most people get into things without understanding economics of scale- that is the one thing the big guys have over the small guys--- tyson vs the back yard chicken farmer- tyson will produce a $2 chicken no backyard farmer has a chance of accomplishing that.
Hey I've been watching your videos for a while and I'm based in Florida as well, just south of you actually. I'm wondering are you only growing lions mane in the tent and also do you have any cooling set up for the tent? How do you keep temps in check for Gourmet species that prefer lower temps during our oppressive summers?
I appreciate your vid. I know I'm a year late . My question is how many man hours per week 200 lbs is necessary. ? If u haven't done the q and a I think that would be awesome. Thx
1 person can pull it off if there are no distractions but they would be pushed to the limits. The biggest factor I have found is the systems the farmer has in place. If the systems are good to make the work easy, the job can be easy. Many farmers make it hard on themselves with bad systems and workflow. I've done one Q&A thus far. Probably need to do another soon.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! 🙏 Starting my own farm is something iv become increasingly more interested in day after day since iv gotten into mycology. Youve definitely "shined the light" so to speak on a few topics that have been weighing heavy in the back of my mind. Like you said, having no real buisness experience makes it really hard to even know where to get things started or where to take things once you do get your foot in the door. Really appreciate your insight and love the Q&A idea! Mushlove man, Wish you success!
