Well the real pilots are trained in simulations that are very similar to videogames. Games are typically more focused on entertainment than ironing out specific skills - yes - but some of them can be used for training - just possibly a little less convenient one. Some even include tutorials. Of course you do need actual training on things like how to start a plane safely, and how to talk to dispatch etc but games can be useful for the actual flying part of it.
@Glen_lastname
@Glen_lastname Месяц назад
@@jwhite5008 actual sims are much more useful than you on your home computer, but you do need to pay for them, and typically also the time of the instructor. Microsoft flight sim will help you with your flows, and to keep practicing procedures, like lost procedures, entering the circuit, forced or precautionary landings, and all the ifr shenanigans it can not replace time in the cockpit, or time in a certified simulator, but as a supplement it is definitely worth your time

Well that's the thing, where's the line between sim and video game. The tool they used in the beginning also has a version where it projects a virtual golf course, but does that cross the line as a tool Adam would use in his "real" training or is it still a videogame

His entire racing experience, yes; but, I presume he'd driven a car before. I think the main thing is that virtual experiences for almost all sports have improved dramatically since this was made. I'm guessing that by now there's probably a golf app or game that actually makes a difference. It would be interesting to see this one tested (see what I did there, Adam Savage fans) again.

It stands to reason that video games can convey only those real skills that are actually used in the game. Since golf games don't make you line up your shot, you're not holding a golf club etc, it's a bad training tool for golf. Even the game they played is a motion capture golf game but there is no weight to the club, no length to it, and the game is probably very forgiving about the aim. But the military uses video games to teach tactics and strategy which are actually skills you use during gaming.

Correct. While Pavlov VR has no bullet drop or wind interference, it allows you to perfect reflexes, instincts and aim. I shoot a FN57 at 300 meters, 318 yards in Pavlov VR with a 3 inch group for 21 shots ranking in the top 0.5% globally, this translates well into real life, particularly in CQB and woodland environments.

If you shoot one less bullet than you have in your magazine, it can make your reload faster because you don't have to re-cock your firearm. For instance, if you put a 10 round pistol mag into a pistol and rack the slide, you now have 9 rounds in your magazine, and one in your chamber. If you shoot 9 rounds, you have nothing in your magazine, but still one in the chamber. That means if you drop that magazine after shooting 9 rounds and put in another 10 round magazine, you technically have 11 bullets in the gun, and can continue to shoot because that last bullet in the chamber from the old magazine will fire and re-rack the slide for you, emptying the chamber of the case of the previous cartridge and loading in a new cartridge from the fresh magazine. If you need to shoot fast and reload faster, this is the way,

@@DrEckigI'm well aware of this, I have a decent sim rig and actively race. Motion doesn't simulate sustained g's. There is still a delta between relying on your eyes vs feeling the g's move. Driver61 covers this quite a lot as a main factor when discussing transitioning from rig to irl. I think the woman in the grenade clip having her arm cramp is very likely, because you don't know how little of a grip is too little, and when it's your life and your kids' lives on the line, you're going to hang on with everything you've got. Adam might have some fear of something happening, but he knows it's not going to kill him, so he's not holding on with white-knuckle fear. But yes, he proved very handily you could hold onto that grenade for two hours like the woman did.

A lot of people quickly judging a show created 10+ years ago when the tech/simulation wasn't as advanced as it is now, also conducting a test on one form of sports really wasn't a conclusive test, im sure there are some sports that even today wouldn't give you an edge if you had no experience by using video games such as track and field, swimming, rugby, football ect, the only sport that has really given an ability to take what you've learnt from a game/sim is racing sims especially if the person learning has the right setup (wheel, peddles, gear shift).

3 situations that I think video games could absolutly improve your real world performance all have very physical elements. and they are all called simulators rather than games. Racing sims, where you have a force feedback wheel, pedals all that. Flight sims, again with force feedback yoke or stick, and a commercial VR welding simulator. they all need a little bit more realistic hardware than just a PlayStation, but are proven to provide real world skills in a virtual environment. I'm unsurprised at the result, golf is a very physical nuanced game, you can feel the difference between swings if its good and bad, and Jamie just wasnt getting that. the game controller does not replicate that at all. having no heft, you could see he almost never followed through, because he wasnt swinging a lump of steel around. Im in no way a good golfer, but ive played a few proper games, and a messed around with golf skills quite a bit. we used to clear out paddocks from a weed called pig-melons, which grow a disgusting smelling, inedible melon about softball sized when ripe. but take a golf club out and smack all the melons when they are golfball sized, before the seeds can mature. very labour intensive, but my dad was pretty big brain, send a few 13yo lads out and make a competition of it. the game was to splatter melon chunks over your mates. we were disgusting afterwards, but we all learnt pretty good powerful and accurate swings out of it. after 2 years of that, we'd eliminated 90% of the weeds, to the point it wasnt much of a sport any more. Then we discovered there are such things as floating golf balls. so we set up a driving range on the beach, with a ski boat as a retriever. I totally understand how dogs feel chasing balls, you didnt go until the THWACK of the ball and then race out as fast as possible to retrieve the ball. but you had to moderate your wake and speed so you could actually pick it up. not only did it greatly improve my drive, but also my boat handling. which you would never get towing a skier, approaching a dock, fishing, etc. video games are fun, but messing about with your mates playing weird invented games is better. you just cant really do that on a Wednesday night after work on your couch

Golf was a terible game to pick for this experiment, the skills just don't translate. Racing games can help you learn the more fine intricacies of driving, like grip, weight shifting, ect. Flight sims can help you learn how planes function and fly. Even more realistic shooters can teach you how to say fire a sniper from a long range and you have to compensate for windage and dropoff. Golf was just a wild pick, only a crazy high end golf sim where you're actually hitting a ball would have helped here.

there is litterally NOTHING in a golfing game that can teach you how to golf. but i still understand the choice. seeing as almost everything else they already have real world experiance with.
@RandysRides

Lots can be learned from video game golf. What club will go what distance, aiming into the wind, laying up short instead of chancing an iffy shot, how to understand reading greens, etc. It just doesn't translate physically. That you have to learn by doing it.

@@RandysRides none of that is going to help you actually get that ball to where you want it to go. wich is the most important bit basicly it should have been a multiple choice paper test. testing their knowledge and not their skill.

@@RandysRides You could take it a step further if you play one of those golfing games where you hit a real ball with a real club into a screen. Just like sim racing games have taught people how to race IRL, golf could too if the sim was sophisticated enough.

05:18 i'm sorry but this is just pointless i'm gonna skip through to the B subject. seriously first of all golfing??? like i said in my other comment. no golfing video game activity is going to make you any better at actual golfing. it's like pushing a toy truck with your hands as a kid. and thinking you can drive an actual truck irl. golfing games are just arcade games. it's not going to teach you how to swing. at most it can teach you what iron to use. ok that aside. a baseline? and how exactly do you expect to measure any improvement? compare the second run to the first run? alright... now what in the ffing goddamn world makes you think that the second run wouldn't be an improvement over the first one without the gaming? these 2 are going to be better at golfing halfway through their first run.

Video games can make you better at certain things. There's a reason why pilots train in flight sims. Also, there are racers who only did sim racing and those skills translated over IRL. Even with golf, if the simulation was good enough (like using a real club to hit real balls into a screen) then there are skills that can be improved in that sim. The sim they chose was beyond dumb. And agreed on their lack of a proper control and stupid conclusions.

Learn how to drift a car on a simulator and those skills will follow through to the real thing.

Jamie lowered his number of tries and got a better swing score. So... can video games make you better at a real life skill? No. Seems like an objective answer.

And the Mythbusters are wrong....... again. You actually CAN become better doing stuff from playing a game. This short little test they did here is just ridiculous and actually a little bit pathetic coming from scientists.

by "compete" you probably meant lose than anything else. Some sim drifter in russia was tandem drifting against a professional drifter Arkadiy Tsaregradcev, can you guess what happened? Sim drifter spun.
