Absolute legend the dude that requested The Levellers. About time they got a reaction. More Levellers please. Just The One, Julie, Beautiful Day, Hope Street (my personal favourite Levellers track) Battle Of The Beanfield. So many great tunes

Really good tune. Remembering the Crusties back in the 90's - big heavy coats, dog on a string, always clutching a bottle of cider. They were also associated with environmental protest groups (like the Twyford Down bypass). Back then they were treated badly by the press, but look where we are now. I always liked the 'Fiddley-Diddley' Irish-influenced music. Another good request Wonderboy.

Listen to battle of the beanfield and look up what the battle of the beanfield is all about on RU-vid. This song sums it up brilliantly,

As you've done the Levellers, who as has been said in a previous comment were a political faction of the New Model Army, then you have to do the English post punk/rock/folk band New Model Army. I'd start with the title track from their first album Vengence, My Country from the No Rest for the Wicked album or Master Race from The Ghost of Cain.

“Levellers” were a political faction of the “New Model Army”, circa 1640’s, English civil war. They included men like John Lilburne (aka freeborn John), a man who’s been cited by constitutional scholars in the United States, as being one of the historical foundations of the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. They were kind of like 17th century hippies, only armed to the teeth with pike and musket.

@@intothemusic908 Just thought an explanation of the band’s name, could give you more of an insight as to what their about. You should checkout Billy Bragg’s version of “The world turned upside down”, is says it all really.

This entire album is absolutely brilliant. I remember seeing Leveller live in Doncaster about 25 years ago. I think it was for my 11th birthday. First time I ever experienced the smell of Marijuana, fell in love at that moment, though never actually smoked any until many years later.

Love it! These guys used to tour the States back in the 90s. Great shows! The Boatman is another favorite of mine from them, it has some more depth. The British refer to their followers and them as "Crusties", I think because of the hippy vibes and looks of the scene around them. Hey, not many other bands would have diggerduroo solos in their shows.

Late 80's, early 90's this was a very much rallying cry for all the oddballs and those who felt downtrodden by life/society.

Ahh the Levellers, so underrated, maybe because of their politics. The Glastonbury video of this song is wow.

One if the first names I ever saw in Liverpool Royal Court around 1996/7. Great gig - one of those where I was bouncing along but also had no choice because the whole room was packed and also bouncing and it would have been physical impossible not to, you just have to go with it, but I had a blast at that gig and is still one of the most fun gigs I've been too. They had a good range of styles with some folks jiggy stuff like Carry Me or Far from Home, some happy pick-me-ups like One way, Beautiful Day, Celebrate, a good drinking song in Just The One, and rock in Hope Street (original version), one of my favorites with a stand-up-and-pay-attention intro riff that drops back to a more jangly verse, and lyrics about lifting up those who fall on hard times. Even though I know it wasn't I used to wonder if any part of it related to Liverpool's Hope St which runs between the cities two cathedrals. In addition to those mentioned, 15 years and Julie (original slow version) are great tracks. I have a best of cd from around 1998/9 and the album after Hello Pig, but I just realized they have made a dozen or so albums since then.

Seen this band a few times, but they never impressed me. They were like New Model Army light. They went for that folky sound that NMA did, but for people who found NMA too challenging. A bit like Coldplay, who tried to be a pop version of Radiohead.

Man, never thought I would see Levellers reactions, quality, how about some more, and some more Suede. You might have answered elsewhere, but why the focus on UK music? not complaining, I am from England, lived through so many of these tunes in the 90s so I am really happy to see them getting some love! thanks gang, got a subscribe from me

Thanks for the sub, Robert. My love for English music came at an early age. After first discovering the Beatles in the 70's, I then went head-on into all the British Invasion that smashed through the doors that the Beatles opened. It was then almost a repeat of that in the 80s for me with New Wave. British music was leading the way with that...almost every song I heard and loved on my local radio station that played strictly alternative music was from a British band or artist. And it's been pretty much a continued love affair for me to present day. Also here in America, current day rock is more of the metal type...with every instrument precise and on point. No flaws. Whereas British rock music seems to take chances, always evolving. Always been that way. Anyway, when we started this channel, the list of songs I fed Chris to react to were largely from British musicians. Folks from your country started picking up on that, subbed, and now most of the paid requests we are getting and digging our way through are like 90% British. So, that's the story. :

Politically as a band they are somewhere between anarchists and maga carta absolutists. By that I mean they believe the government should leave us alone. Great band who do a lot for charity.
