I got put on kappera after having a focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizure at the age of 53. I had 2 absence seizures as a young child. I was on Dilatian for a few years. I was taken off of it after 2 or 3 years. I was told I would outgrow the seizures. I went 40 + years without any seizures. 09/03/2021 is when I had my last seizure. I was given Kappera in the hospital. I didn't want to take anything, but I was told I would have to for the rest of my life due to a small spot of brain malformation on my right frontal lobe. I was told I'm at high risk of having another seizure. I personally think it was because of severely dehydrated I was suffering from because of type 2 diabetes. The kappera exaggerated conditions I already had all my life. More than usual anxiety, sinus issues, moodiness, depression. I also, with the dehydration, dizziness, and unsteady feeling, was worse. I had a split second that i felt suicidal. It seem like I had almost every side effect. I just about went nuts trying to get adjusted on the medication. Then after almost 2 months on it I was still having issues with moodiness, feeling very irritable. I had to get off of it and get on Lamotrigine. That took forever to get to the right dose while still taking kappera at the same time. I don't understand why I wasn't put on the kappera slowly like the lamoTRIgine. I was given 500mgs twice a day of the Kappera. I never want to ever take that medication ever again.
@DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
I've had a lot of people tell me that they were put on high doses of Keppra and had the same experience. I'm not a doctor so I don't know the starting dose. I've never been on Keppra, but I have heard that either people have great experiences from it or it is a very difficult medication to be on with a lot of side effects. I'm glad that they were able to get you on lamotrigine. That's one of the medications that I am on. It has helped my mood a lot along with controlling my seizures. I can understand your not wanting to be on medication. I've been on medication for epilepsy for 42 years now and I feel at times the long-term side effects are starting to take place. I'm happy that you got off the Keppra and can understand why you wouldn't want to take it again.

I take keppra 1000mg x2 per day and experience alot of those side effects intermitently but still it controls the myaclonic seizures that are far worst to live with.
@DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
I'm glad to hear your seizures are controlled, yet I'm so sorry to hear you are dealing with a lot of side effects. I'm not on Keppra, I'm on Carbamazepine and Lamotrigine, but experience side effects as well. They can be very exhausting and not many people truly understand what it is like to deal with daily. I hope you stay well and your seizures stay controlled.

I'm currently taking levetiracetam at the moment you can say for over 8 years I've been taking it another word for it is keppera I use to take it with phenobarbital as a combination and now I'm taking it along with lamotrigine in my opinion it works better with the lamotrigine than the phenobarbital by far the only thing that bothers me is that it makes me gain a lot of weight and sometimes makes me feel hungry but otherwise it's a great combination with other seizure medications and the only kind of seizures I have ever since I started taking it is the petite Mal I does be having and I don't have them as often like before and something about it just give a great feeling can't really explain what it is but it's a great medication and from what I see a lot of people are taking it in my country that's to tell you how good it is I use to take a high dose but at this point my neurologist is tapering me off of it bit by bit
@DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
I'm glad to hear that it is working well for you. The side effects of any medication can be frustrating. I have had the same frustrations with weight gain. I'm glad to hear you were able to come off of phenobarbital and go on lamotrigine. I've taken both and I have found lamotrigine so much better.

I ve been on keppra 500mg / twice daily 1000mg/ day for one month. No siezures. Initial side effects were lightheaded, dizziness and slight drowsiness. These have slowly going away. I was taken off oxcarb 1050mg because of severe skin reactions that didn't heal.

I am happy to hear that you are doing better and that your seizures are now under control. I hope you continue to do well. It is hard to adjust to new medication, so I am happy to hear that the side effects are slowly going away. I'm sorry that you had the experience you did with oxcarbazepine. I moved to Germany 1,5 years ago I was diagnosed with epilepsy a year ago but not sure what kind, I am trying to learn about it since the doctors are not open about it due to the language barrier I am not getting enough information. I am curious about the future of it, is it curable, how do you live so you don't get the seizures, is that even possible? what was the reason it happened to me.... Thank you for the video
@DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
Epilepsy is not curable, due to there are many ways someone can develop epilepsy. Examples are genetic mutation, head trauma, tumors, and in many situations, the cause is not found. I would suggest having an EEG and MRI done to see if they can find the location in the brain where the seizure activity is located as well as if there is any trauma to the brain. One thing I would suggest is see if there are any classes in your area so you can learn German. My husband is from Germany and I can tell you from visiting there for a time period they are very strict about people who have moved there learning German. My sister in law is from Ukraine, and she had to take lessons because no one would speak to her in Russian or English. For the time I have been there, I made every effort to speak in German. If they see you are truly trying, they will help you, even if you mix German and English. Start simple as learning something basic as ordering a cup of coffee. If you go on Duolingo, they teach German on there. Both of my sons practice on there and I find it is very easy to use and is free. Please let me know if I can help in any other way.

My baby has serious seizures during covid19 fever. Doctor suggest my 2 years baby using this pill for 1 year. I have another child that had seizures (not serious) before, but doctor suggest another pill. Is Kappera suitable for baby? I feel that he get so tired after using Kappera.

I am not a neurologist so I cannot advise on medication. I have had epilepsy for 43 years now and I help patients learn how to advocate for themselves. From my personal experience in taking medication, being tired is a common side effect. The reason for this is the medication is slowing down your brain activity. Throughout my life, the more medication I was on, the more tired I was. I am on two medications right now and I'm doing ok. At one point I was on three and trying to get through the day working was challenging. When it comes to epilepsy, there are no two cases alike. What can work great for one patient can have the opposite effect on another. I'm sorry that I cannot give you more information. If your baby is still exhausted after being on Keppra for some time, I would talk to the doctor and see if an adjustment needs to be made or if another medication would be better.

I'm checking out what others are experiencing on this. I have myoclonus in the daytime, donetimes atonic drops if i sm tired, nocturnal seizures with limb movements. I had Valprate, misspelled likely, which gave me severe dystonia within a minth of taking. Carbamazapine exacerbated my myoclonus snd atonic episodes. I even had to get a wheelchair for when my kegs were dropping me. I didn't kniw if i was losing my muscle tone and it would be permanent. It stopped ehen i stopped Carbamazapine. I take Gabapentin for pain but it does also exacerbate my myoclonus. I need it for neuropathic pain. Although i am trialing Diclofenac for pain. Every single seratonin type medication causes dystonia or tonic clonic seizures, spnetimes lasting through the might. Usually those began triggering reactions withing 8 hours to a few days. So i was never on one long. After several times,y pharmacist yold me I needed to stop accepting any trial of any related medications. Somce i had such negative respondes snd told my nee neurologist, she daid the Keppra is for both myoclonus and frontal lobe seizures. So, i sm hoping this will work for me. I am over an half century old. I feel like i tried everything. But it took over 30 years to get a a diagnosis. So, my old neurologists were off track. I lost count if how many i have had. I was hoping for some better reports. But then again, I have recently read why my myoclonus was exacerbated by some meds. Its something about some genes cause a gain in the electrical flow vs some that cause a loss of the flow. So, I guess I have the type that blockers don't work on. Or, maybr thays exactly backwards. But I think I am getting the idea.
@DefeatingEpilepsyFoundation
I'm so sorry you have gone through so much and it took so long for a correct diagnosis. I have not been on Keppra before so I cannot share an experience. I am currently on carbamazepine and lamotrigine to control my seizures and pregabalin for fibromyalgia. I hope that things get better and that being on Keppra will be the answer for you.
