I was an inmate in Lewis in 2009 2010, and it definitely wasn't uncommon for you to see the same guard working the night shift that was also working the morning shift, which states at about 4 am, and they'd often be so tired that they'd be Seen sleeping sitting up inside the control bubble that controls all the doors and monitors the pods, so if something had happened they'd never know until an inmate banged on the window to wake them up.

100% I was there from 2003-2006 on stick em stiner and I remember some nights there would be nobody in the bubble or they were sleeping. We took advantage of it all.

@chicofromph33nix64 yea they'd be gone alot or outside smoking lol. Or just straight up sleeping. One dude just walked off the job lol cause they didn't have his relief. People got a misconception about how much inmate control and staff there is in prisons

My father worked with the ADCC for 22 years in Florance and then in Tucson, He retired about 10 years ago. I asked him why he retired so early when he said he liked working as a Corrections Officer? He told me that about 2 weeks before he retired he was working with a team of new recruits. He was training them and when he entered the pod a conflict broke out between the inmates and all my fathers new co-workers left him in the pod and shut the door behind him. He had to slick talk his way out of the pod so he did not get hurt. When he reported it to the higher in command officers they did nothing to the new recruits or even reprimand them. At that time he said I am done I did my 20 years and I am retiring. Left ADCC and is enjoying his retirement right now. Point is when something happens I dont want to hear that the corrections officers did not do something correctly and they should be personally liable, the state should be the one to deal with this, not the corrections officers. This is why state leaders are paid the wages they get paid they should be responsible for the issue when its them that caused it and not the correctional officers who are following orders in a Military (but not really) ranking structure where leadership knows best and you dont question leadership. 🤔

The Federal Government should be sending Federal Prison Officers to help out in Arizona. Politicians running prisons and jails is not the answer. People who have never stepped foot into a Correctional Setting as an Officer have no business trying to run a jail or prison.

These are facts, its the new director thats making these things happen. He cares more about the inmates rather then worrying about the officers and taking care of us.

Worked in correction in Wisconsin for 17 years. That is why I quit. Sixteen hour days for anyone dumb enough to show up for work. In Wisconsin inmates have more influence on policy because Walker broke the union. Down hill after that.

Enough is Enough Arizona Department of Correction needs desperate help because there is no transparency or accountability. Officers and inmates are suffering because of the head that do not change what needs to be changed. They need to get those out and get people that are going to make a change for the better of the officers, and for the better of the inmates. .

If the people who make the decisions regarding the Arizona Department of Corrections had to work in the prison themselves things would instantly change. The DOC Officers in state prisons make less money than County Jailers make. Even contract jails have better pay for officers.

That's is probably in lot of different types of work security, police, prison systems in all states especially Texas. I retired from tdcj. It is not just for the correctional officers, this endangers inmates that are there to do their time.

That is so true about just being a number! Everyone is running way below core yet admin won’t man a post. They only care of the inmates are being taken care for because of the injunction. I agree that they should have better healthcare and living situations but Xboxes , PlayStation and carnivals are not something they should be untitled to. Officers can’t hold inmates accountable for their actions in prison because it’s perceived as “harassment “ by the inmate and admin lets them slide with a ridiculous amount for dangerous behavior , which sends a message to staff that admin doesn’t have our backs. It’s frustrating and it’s one of the main reasons the staffing levels are so low and no morale. People stay for the good health insurance, and to support their families.

This was a year ago, till this day nothing has changed. Lewis prison is sooooooooooooo understaffed its horrible!!! You have 1 officer running 2 pods total off 100 inmates for 1 officer. There is no accountability for inmates bad behavior disciplinary tickets get dismissed all the time and that makes inmates do whatever they want because theres no consequence to their actions.

Here's an idea, maybe the US should stop incarcerating its citizens at record rates. We create our own staffing issues by incarcerating people for things that should really be handled by other diversionary programs (as these offenses are in almost every other developed nation). Incarcerating a large percentage of offenders (even non-violent offenders) means that we end up with a massive prison population. This is further compounded by the fact that the US corrections system has a very high recidivism rate, meaning that once incarcerated, a person is highly likely to end up incarcerated again in the future. People shouldn't get off free of any consequences, but there are other methods we can use to generate restitution, especially for non-violent and victimless crimes. Combine record rates of incarceration with limited training and relatively poor pay for CO's and of course you have severe staffing issues. Combining the use of more diversionary programs and better pay/ratios for officers would probably lead to overall safer jails with lower populations. But that would require actual planning, execution and action from officials and we all know that if it requires work it ain't getting done by government.
