This was cutting edge special effects for 1978. Especially his flyby at 3:49. I still remember sitting in the theater as a kid during this scene like "Wow.. That looked real". Clark being polite still after the guys tell him to get out of the way, the seriousness of superman as Clark becomes the man of steel in Perry’s office, that John Williams score, the effects and also that incredible Gene Hackman voice-over. A strong contender for best scene in the movie. It’s literally pitch perfect. The musical queues with Hackmans menacing, but hilarious voice over are just brilliant and the flying sequence from when he transforms into Superman to his graceful arc upwards immediately afterwards are, in my opinion, the best Superman flying effects ever put on screen. Those few seconds do literally look like a man flying….! Classic scene.

@paulcastle3171
@paulcastle3171 Год назад
@@rosemarywoodhouse4832 If you want the best example of that, have a look at the scene in Superman 2 in the hotel room after LL has jumped into the Niagra Falls to try and prove that Clark is Superman. The scene where Clark finally gives in and stops pretending. Reeve seems to literally change from Clark to Superman, all while still dressed as Clark. His posture, voice, demeanour, everything just changes as you’re watching the scene. It’s a stupendous bit of physical acting from Reeve.

I agree that this scene is perfect. But best effects? Obviously not. The flying looks fake which is of course no problem since the movie came out in 1978. Not that the effects matter that much. Man of Steel had great effects and still is by far not as good as this movie.

One of my favorite scenes from this great movie. I always loved how Reeve lowers his eyebrows at 2:26 when he hears Lex Luthor. And Hackman was incredible with making it so easy to hear his devious smile through the frequency. Great music as he gets set to go out the window, too.

One thing Dick Donner did well with this movie was pacing, and keeping the world close-knit but not too small. Case in point, this scene sets up the entire third act for the audience. Lois interviewing the native American chief about the land fraud deal, her telling him Jimmy is shooting pics at Hoover, Perry reiterating that fact to Clark in the following scene, and the nuclear launch showing on the televisions when Kent stepped in the newsroom. All of it was foreshadowing for what was going to go down, but it wasn't too obvious even after 1000 rewatches. Top! (Edit) Oh, and that gradual upward soar he does from 3.30-3.37 to get to a proper scanning height was nothing short of majestic!

What an imaginative idea for transforming into Superman. It is shot, scored, and edited so dynamically that its sheer joy blows away (for me, at least) any questions about whether anyone would see him do this, or about the relatively primitive effect used to create the transformation. The 3 hour version is really good. I'm glad it got released on Blu Ray. Richard Donner doesn't consider it the final version but I think it clarifies things quite well, especially with the twin rocket launch. I always thought Lex Luthor was just stopping the same rocket transport twice. I also thought the pacing was decent. Perhaps Lex Luthor's "babies" thing is a bit weird / weak but other than that the entire 3 hour version is superb.

"This is Lex Luthor. Only one thing alive with less than four legs can hear this frequency, Superman. And that's you. In approximately five minutes, a poisoned gas pellet containing propane lithium compound will be released through thousands of air ducts in this city, effectively annihilating half of the population of Metropolis." I know it all seems a bit much, but how else was I going to meet you, Superman? I knew you'd never accept an invitation to tea. But a disaster, with people in danger, people who need help... Oh, I just knew you couldn't resist that chance to sort of pitch in. You know what I mean?" There's a strong streak of good in you, Superman. But then, nobody's perfect. Almost nobody." I saw this in the theater the day it was released. When it missed its summer release date, there were constant negative news articles about cost and that it might not ever be released, you know, newspapers write shit. Richard Donner was on the defensive, hinting there were no wires used for Superman flying, amping up expectations of Superman fans like me, who were mostly teens devoted to DC comics. Sitting in front of the big screen, this scene was impressive. Lex Luthor was absolutely brilliant, using high frequency sound to reel Superman in to his underground lair, he was far more malevolent and without fear than the comic character. And Superman dropping off the ledge and sweeping into that massive curve of a flyby past buildings and buses, it really looked like no wires.

my dad took me to watch superman after I finished school on a Friday, I was 8 at the time. and this particular scene the dog frequency that only Clark Kent aka superman could hear. the sound affects was amazing, perry masion advising Clark to be more aggressive totally oblivious to the high pitch sound that only animals can hear. unfortunately as a man pushing 54 who has has tinnitus for almost 10 years can no longer hear this sound affects..so in a sense of irony it may as well be the sound frequency that only animals with 4 legs can hear.

Donner probably doesn’t have the same reason I have in which the one little gripe I have is where did his clothes go? They seem to just disappear while he’s diving down before he flies upward. The rest of the scene is very well done. It’s just that one little nitpick that’s very hard for me to look past.
