Lexus GS350 IS350: How To Change The Transmission Fluid And Filter

In this video I show you what steps I took in order to change the transmission fluid and filter in my wife's 2013 Lexus GS350 AWD (6 speed). The transmission and transfer case share the same oil, so if you change the transmission fluid you are also changing the transfer case fluid as well. Toyota / Lexus claims this fluid is lifetime, but I disagree.
Below are links to the fluid, filter, and gasket that I used.

TL;DR: if you’re still having shift problems after a drain and fill but no error codes, try cleaning out your shift solenoids with MAF cleaner. Solved all of my shifting issues!! I have a 2008 Lexus GS350 with almost 185k miles on it. I did a drain and fill following this video a few weeks ago. It did not fix my shifting issues in fact I lost 5th gear entirely and some gears were slamming. So I did three more drain and fills added a bunch of shift additives (shudder fix, Lucas’ etc) - still nothing. After banging my head against the wall for weeks it finally dawned on me that it could be the valve body. So I did a bunch of research and bought $700 worth of repair parts + a new valve body…the problem was MUCH simpler. Just needed to drop the pan and pull out all 9 shift solenoids. Cleaned them with MAF cleaner, tested them with a 9v battery to make sure they all fired properly and now the car shifts great! I’m *pretty* sure one of the solenoids was stuck and it just needed some TLC. Hope this helps someone!

Enjoyed the vid. FYI, in the TIS Repair Manual RM19E0U, the 2013 GS350 appears to have either the A760E (RWD) or A760H (AWD) transmission, the proper fluid temperature adjustment range is listed in the AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID, ADJUSTMENT section for both models is: Data List: [A/T Oil Temperature 1] 49 to 53°C (120 to 127°F) I was monitoring in TechStream and curious about the delta, I'd estimate .5 to .75 quart came out between 102F and 120F, so if you followed the video and capped it at 102F, you are over filled based on the spec for the 2013 GS350. Probably not the end of the world being overfilled. Also, if your plugs are check and drain plugs rusty, I was lucky to break free the check plug as the hexkey was very loose in all the rust, these are the part numbers on the A760H (not sure on the A760E), you can replace to help the next time. 90341-10011 Transmission drain plug (14mm socket, torque 29ft*lbf) 90341-10021 Transmission check plug (5mm hex, torque 15ft*lbf) 35178-30010 Transmission gasket (2X for both above) I got at the Toyota dealer, maybe it's cheaper there that what Lexus dealer markup might charge.

I have a 2008 GS350 with 183,000 miles on it. As far as I know it’s never had a transmission fluid service. It was shifting pretty bad, slippage, hard up/down. I had read about people performing the ole ‘drain n fill’ on high mileage Lexus’ and it fixing their problems (despite Scotty Kilmer’s warning against it lol). I took the chance. Fluid that came out looked very dark. After the change, the car is shifting sooo much better now, it’s much ‘snappier’! It’s only Been a couple days so we’ll see how it holds out, but I’m happy. Just a few notes maybe someone will find useful: 1. The transmission took about 4.5-5 quarts of ATF - (I used Valvoline MaxLife which is cheaper than OEM and rated for my transmission.) 2. The overflow plug was a 5mm on the 2008 not 6mm. 3. There was a plastic cover concealing the fill plug which was held on by a single 10mm bolt. 4. There wasn’t any exhaust bracket in the way of the pan, just a plastic skid cover protecting the entire transmission. It was held on by four 10mm screws, one plastic 12mm nut and one 10mm nut. Hope that helps. Thanks for this video!!

Great job! I have a RWD LEXUS GS350 that I bought with 187k miles, so it's too late to change the fluid in my transmission. There's no record of it ever being changed and my car shifts perfectly so I'm going to leave it alone. If I would have bought the car new, or there was a record of the fluid being change, I would have changed it after 50k miles. And you are correct. There's no such thing as a life long fluid for us that keep our cars long term. Heck, even if you are going to change your vehicle after 100k, you should do the transmission service after 50k miles, but people listen to the nonsense of the dealers about lifetime fluids and 10k mile oil changes. I change my oil after 5k miles religiously. Subscribed.

Nice video. I recently replaced my transmission filter, o-ring, pan gasket and fluid...but I did three "drain and fills" first (driving 10 miles or so between each drain interval to mix old fluid left in torque converter) to remove the majority of old fluid and a final fill and level fluid check at correct temperature. If you're going to go through the hassle to remove the filter, etc...might as well get as MUCH of the old fluid out as possible first. If you replaced 6 qts...you have approx 3 qts still in your transmission with 60-70k miles on it.
@Mr-E.
@Mr-E. 4 года назад
Maybe a silly question, but did you replace the 6 qts three times? First time, then drive 10 miles, drain completely, refill with another 6 qts, drive 10 miles, drain completely, refill with another 6 qts, etc. ?
@GokuInstinct1
@GokuInstinct1 11 месяцев назад
@@Mr-E.I know this is late but I believe a drain and fill only takes 3.4 quarts for each one. Doing this 3x replaces most of the old fluid which is good. Some mechanics even say doing 1 time every 50k/5 years is good enough. As long as you clean the pan and replace filter, the transmission should last a long time.
@DIYDanCars

Already impressed and I don’t even have a Lexus. Red transmission fluid, replaceable filter, and not overly excessive amount of other parts required to access drain pan. All other manufacturers take note. They say lifetime but in reality they mean lifetime of the warranty. Does the infrared thermometer penetrate through the pan frame enough to get accurate fluid reading, or do you have to maybe say 105 instead of 102F to account for the difference between cold pan and warmed up fluid? I see the vacuum pump idea does the pump nozzle spray upward into the transmission body or at a 90 degree like I see with other vehicles? Approximately how much is the transmission fluid per bottle? Is this the 8 speed automatic or six? Good video and informative without extra “Fluff” that is used in a lot of Y/T videos because some narrators like to hear themselves speak instead of focusing on the subject? I would consider a GS for being able to remove and replace the filter and do a proper transmission service.

Wow 4 bolts to hold the filter. The transmission on the Crown VIcs just use the O big ring to hold the filter, which is a bit larger than this. I've seen them floating in the pan :lol:. Usually they stay though. There is also a mode that the car tells you when it hits the temperature. You have to do a sequence to activate it. I have to do this on mine soon. Wish I had that lift!

Although annoying. This tends to be pretty normal within Toyota/Lexus transmissions. They hate being cold and feel pretty jerky until the warm up. Wouldn’t worry to much about it. Jerky shifts are never normal! I would recommend getting your car in for service and having them check the transmission fluid level. What makes me think this is related to fluid level is your statement about how it shifts fine once the car is warmed up. Transmission fluid expands as the temperature of the fluid rises, hence when the car is warm, there is more fluid in the pan vs when the car is cold. Best of luck!

I dropped the pan on my RWD, added 300ml more than I took out (3.6L) to be safe and opened the overflow in the specified temperature range. The fluid absolutely flooded out and I was able to get the bolt back in with only 300ml lost. I've left it like this as it's got roughly what came out. I'd say it would have kept coming out, unless it was overfilled before, what did I do wrong? As far as I know it was the first time the box was serviced.

That's not a stupid question at all. I see no problem with measuring the exact amount of fluid that you drained and then refilling it with the exact amount with new fluid. This process will be more tedious because you have to be absolutely certain that you get the exact amount back in. As long as you understand that, I would say go for it.

The transfer case and transmission share the same oil supply. If you change the transmission fluid then you are also changing the fluid for the transfer case. Ive been doing some research and I've come to conclusion that replacing the transmission filter is not needed. That filter only stops big metal shavings from circulating back into the transmission. If by any chance you have big metal shavings, you have yourself a bigger problem than just replacing the filter. I love this very informative video, but in conclusion to my findings, I will not be replacing the transmission filter. I think its just a better idea to drain and fill the fluid more often.
@DIYDanCars
@DIYDanCars 7 месяцев назад
It's your car so definitely do what you want, but I think this video illustrates just how important it is to drop the pan and clean it. The bottom of my pan had a bunch of grime and metal shavings on the magnets. Since I have gone this far to drop the pan, it only makes sense (to me anyways) to do the filter at the same time. Everyone has an opinion on the topic which is fine, but I like to go above and beyond when servicing my vehicles. Is it overkill? Perhaps.

Does the transmission go into drive? If so, it sounds more like a bad control solenoid. Yes, low fluid level can cause the car to have delayed shifting or not shift at all.
